Candle-making is an art that has survived millennia, and it is still one of the most popular hobbies.

They are beautiful to look at and they make for the most elegant gifts!

Orange has been the new black in terms of lip colour, and, save for minor variations, the trend is still going strong.

Finding the right shade of orange is a tricky affair, so before you take the plunge and splurge on lipstick, it makes sense to test the waters with a lip stain or tint. The Chilli Tingle Lip Tint by Lush cosmetics seems a good place to start with, since they use eco-friendly, allnatural products.

The colour is a beautiful deep coral red, and flatters the range of South Asian complexions. You can wear as is for a subtle hint of colour, or layer over another sheer colour to add definition. The chilli spice mixed into the tint causes the lips to tingle and adds a minor plumping effect.

Be warned, though, this is a tint, and not a balm, so it can get a little dry. You want to layer this with a balm for the perfect pout.

You’ll need • • • •

Candle shavings or paraffin wax or beeswax A double boiler Wick Two wooden sticks bound by an elastic band at two ends/wooden pencil • Essential oils and oil-based dyes • Non-stick container

Directions

Place your wax shavings in a bowl and put the bowl in boiling water. The wax should melt in just a few minutes, depending on the amount and temperature of water, type of wax used and the size of shavings. As a general rule, smaller shavings should melt faster than the larger ones.

Add scents and colour to your melted wax. Food colour and scent are unlikely to melt in wax since they are water soluble. Use oil-based dyes and essential oils to scent your wax.

Place the wick in the centre of the candle container. Hold the wick in place using the wooden sticks at the top and a double

adhesive at the bottom.

Pour the melted wax into the mold.

Cool the wax. It should take approximately 24 hours for the wax to completely solidify. At this point you’ll notice that there is a small dent at the centre. Pour a little more melted wax there to smooth out the surface.

Take off the wooden sticks after the wax has completely dried and cut the top end of the wick to a suitable size!

Eid is synonymous with mehendi. But what is a “wow” on your hands is definitely an “oops” on fabric.

Here’s how to remove (fresh) henna stains from your clothes.

Step 1: Dab, don’t rub at the stain, with a soft cloth while it is still wet.

Step 2: Dip an old toothbrush in laundry soap and scrub the area in circular motions.

Rinse with cold water.

Step 3: Dip the area in lukewarm milk and let it soak for 30 minutes. Repeat Step 2.

Step 4: Repeat Step 2, except with vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide solution.

Warning: this might cause the fabric’s colour to fade

Amazon’s heavy hitter tablet is still worth its price

The most updated version of the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is a monster when it comes to performance.

The screen is sexy sharp and incredibly lightweight for a large tablet. If you’ve been keeping your tech radar on, you will recollect that the Fire’s predecessor was too bulky. They were too focused on durability, giving comfort the backseat. This time around, it’s easier to handle even with one hand. As the body changes, so does the specs under the hood.

The HDX 8.9 has also been given an 8-megapixel rear camera with an LED flash. With a much higher resolution screen (2560x1600, 339ppi) and weighing at only 0.82 pounds (13.2 ounces), viewing those shots from the camera will make for a smoother experience.

The biggest draw of this tablet comes from Amazon’s interface and media ecosystem. If you’re a member of Amazon, you’ll have access to all its features. You have to keep in mind, they want to give Apple and their store a run for their money. So far so good.

The only drawback is its 16GB storage. Nowadays, our smartphones hold much more than that. At least that’s what we normally demand from them. But

if you’re willing to limit yourself to certain media consumption, this is still a darn good tablet to use. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core with the Adreno 330 graphics is impressive. In fact, it’s possibly one of the best CPUs you can get in an Android tablet right now. In addition, the battery can provide 12 hours of media playback and 18 hours for reading time. It’s a powerful tablet with a very good battery, and let’s not forget the very pretty screen. We like pretty things. Don’t you?

Oyster is definitely for all of you bookworms out there. Most of us still cling onto paperbacks and hardcovers, unable to part from the new book (or even old book) smell. And there are many who love to bring all the reading material in one device. It makes sense, you want things to be as convenient as possible. This app gives you the opportunity to an unlimited amount of books for only 10USD a month – the first 30 days are free for trial. You could argue that you’re saving money by not adding to the stacks of books you have at home. But you can’t buy the same experience as you would by opening a paperback, right?

Oyster isn’t lifeless, it’s beautifully designed. The user interface is simple and easy to navigate. You would naturally expect something like that from rows and columns filled with book covers.

When you touch on a cover, you can view the synopsis, publish dates and other information.

After you’ve finished one off, you’re also able to rate the book from one to five stars. Those

ratings come in handy when you’re given the chance to follow your friends and family, checking up what they are currently reading. If that isn’t enough for you, oysterbooks.com has the entire catalogue of books for you to browse through.

10 bucks may seem a lot, but if you’re a heavy reader you can’t go wrong with this app.

A small car that will get you through the hustle and bustle of the city in a jiffy Judging a car by its 0-100 times may have some merit in the land of cheeseburgers and V8s. But the fact is that, it represents a conundrum for those of us who can barely get to 80km/h. The Hyundai Eon is a fantastic car for people who enjoy getting 18km to litre of dubious gasoline on our regular commute with the air conditioning going on full blast. Given that hitting the big 1-0-0 is not on the cards; not unless you have some aspirins and half a minute to kill.

transmission. Driveability isn’t all that great with max torque being generated at a fairly high revs which means you have to constantly shift down to lower gears for a better torque. In the city, you will constantly find yourself using second and third gears and that too at a higher rev count.

Exterior

The outlook of the Eon comes courtesy of Hyundai’s new fluidic design. It’s funky, eye-catching, and closely related, cosmetically, to the i10. You will find the same profusion of lines and shapes especially at the front with those well defined cheekbones highlighting this car.

The sunken front grille with the chrome strip and the Hyundai logo embedded in the centre are other distinctive characters. The rear hatch area is also very attractively turned out, which is complemented by the crescent moon shaped tail lamps. Even though the Eon appears to be a very busy pallet, it has a smooth cohesive sense about it.

Safety

As for safety, Hyundai really disappointed us. There is only one airbag on the driver side. Hyundai justifies that by saying, “this is not a family saloon or estate and we expect most owners to be single drivers without any passenger in the car most of the time.” And with the ABS being optional, it is hardly a justification.

Interior

The interior of the Eon is by far the most spacious cabin in an entry level compact car. It can seat four people with generous knee room and ample shoulder space for the rear passengers. The centre stack is designed neatly with the entire dash cascading into that single area.

The instrument console features a simple three step layout, with a large speedometer in the centre and the temperature and fuel gauge on either side.

The cabin is also quite sensible and apart from the generous amounts of space you also get several storage bins and bottle holders. There is also a very generous boot space of 215-litres and the rear seats can be folded down to provide more if required. It even has an USB port that allows iPod connectivity and also has an aux port.

Performance

The Hyundai Eon has an 800cc, three-cylinder engine called Epsilon that produces a mere 56HP. The power is transferred to the drive train using a five-speed manual

Overall, the Eon offers a nice cabin, decent space, superior fuel mileage and looks really neat. Were the engine more powerful, the Eon would have made for an absolutely killer package.

AUTO CORRECT

How often should I change the transmission fluid?

Most manufacturers claim that the automatic transmission fluid will last over 100,000km with average use. But severe servicing is required after every two years or 24,000km. Severe servicing can mean extended high speed driving or hauling heavy loads.

If the fluid is bright red and smells sweet, it is probably still usable. If the fluid colour is dark red or brown and smells burnt, then you might want to get it changed. Remember, changing the transmission fluid is cheaper than replacing the transmission itself.

The most prevalent problem faced by Bangladeshi citizens is undoubtedly the gruesome traffic and crowded streets.

Most of us have learnt to live in this highly congested, dirty shack of a city. Nonetheless, the condition of the streets of Dhaka, which is apparently one of the most unlivable cities in the world, reaches new heights of unhygienic as the month of Ramadan approaches.

Imagine living in the city during Ramadan with the hectic traffic adorned with starving, aggravated citizens and topped with the scorching heat of July.

This year the fasting period is quite long - over 13 hours, making everything a lot worse. Mouths dry as sand, body drenched with sweat and patience level threatening to cross their human limit, you can’t possibly judge their finicky attitude by thinking “such is the attitude of Bangladeshis.” Already having narrow footpaths jammed with frenzied pedestrians on its usual days, the citizens of Dhaka face new challenges during the holy month of Ramadan, with iftar food carts scattered all over the pavements.

Adding to the horrible empty stomachs is the smell of vegetable oil, burning petrol, and oil-soaked piyajus and begunis. Make sure to count to 10, or 30, if need be, before lashing out at a fellow pedestrian who happened to bump into you. Last but not the least, the season of Eid is the most suitable for the rise of pickpocketing and robbery throughout the city. Our pockets heavy with cash. If you’re going to go Eid shopping, make sure you drag a friend with you.

If you’re travelling in a rickshaw, keep the hood up so it’s harder for them to notice you.

Life was great when I met her. It all seemed pretty until I began noticing signs. She has been secretly seeing my younger brother at the same time. I’m at a loss; it is excruciatingly difficult having to deal with this. I love my brother but I feel extremely betrayed right now. I cannot forgive her. On top if all this, they try to make me “understand” how they still love me and that whatever happened between them was completely beyond their control. I just don’t know what to do. He’s my brother and I still love my girlfriend. How can I start living again?

My dear, you are still living! You did not die, YOU are in pain. You feel betrayed. I would like to take you on a different path. You are on a very painful path right now; betrayal is soul destroying, it does no good to you. May be and just may be, you were not meant to be together. Look at the new path ahead and see that life is full of opportunities to those who have an open heart and mind. Your mind is completely blocked and your vision is obscured by the pain “others” inflicted upon you. I understand your pain, but learn to be good to yourself and let go of blame and your vision will clear up and on your new path, a new love will appear to you. Trust that life is not there to harm you but just there to help you be happy. Life is offering you the opportunity to find a new love that you can trust, but first, you need to drop the negativity.

Out of control teens | Agony Aunt I am a working mother. Having a nineto-five job makes it very difficult for me to spend quality time with my children; I would’ve quit if my husband was still alive. In recent years, it feels like my teenage daughter is even more distant than she used to be. To make matters worse, she has a new friend circle - and this new circle isn’t a good influence on her. She’s taken up drinking in the last few weeks; I often find her room smelling strongly of alcohol. I have forbidden her to do it, but obviously it isn’t enough. I don’t know what to tell her - how to make her stop. I’ve tried to ground her, but it didn’t work. I’m not saying she has a drinking habit, but she’s not far from it. I also have a younger son and I don’t want him to be influenced by this. What should I do?

I can understand your worries and sorrows, you feel alone and even more responsible because you do not have the support of your husband.

it may do to her if she exceeds the limits of what a teenager can drink and do. In some European societies, it is very acceptable for teenagers to have a little drink with a meal, under the supervision of the parents. Wine, for example, is seen as a complement to a meal, rather than a way of consuming alcohol. Of course this is not the case with your daughter. Tell her constantly that you love her and you will always love her no matter what she does.

Making her feel responsible for the example she gives her younger brother, will only make her feel angrier and determined to drink more. Tell her you are aware that not having a dad and being a teenager is a difficult time, probably the most difficult time in her life. Relate to her experiences by discussing how you, as a teenager, encountered difficulties, similar situations and so on. Of course we are there to protect our children and we cannot let them do whatever they want, but if you tell her that may be she could have a drink with you (even if you do not drink, you can have juice), her need to fight you will diminish a great deal. Let me tell you, my mother tried to prevent my brother from smoking, but he still smokes at 69.

She told me that if I wanted to smoke I could, I never did. Teenagers need to push the wall in front of them, and within limits if we make the wall less tall, trying to demolish the wall is less interesting for them.

Ask him to imagine himself staying at home and waiting for you to come home, how would he feel? I know he will probably say that he would love not to work, but do not believe him. The lighting of a room can make or break its spirit

In most of our homes, rooms are overly brightly lit, thereby giving the impression of a hospital lobby.

Carefully thought out position of lights and bulbs can help create an inviting environment that encourages people to stick around and marvel at the lighting, among other fixtures. Try not lighting the whole room; instead create layers of different intensities of light that blend well, keeping in mind the type of room and its location. A grilled/boiled/ lightly cooked in olive oil tofu salad with bean sprouts, green bell peppers and whatever other herbs suit your palate should make for a healthy alternative to the “fruit salad.” That salad ends up caking your waist with more and more of the sweet custard and the sugar you put in it. Other healthy dishes you

can try may include chicken whole wheat pasta. Whole wheat pasta releases energy slowly throughout the day. Add roasted red pepper, spinach, beans, a dash of lemon and you have a happy tummy. The trick is to put a healthy spin on the unhealthy pasta, or burgers, or sandwiches. Opt for brown bread and tuna/sardines for sandwiches and for the burgers use whole wheat buns and make your patty out of ground sirloin meat which is kinder to your hips.

Now that you are eating more than you were on week 2, the workout needs to kick up a notch too. A 15 minute HIIT(high intensity interval training) followed by a 10 minute ab routine and wrapping it up with some deadlifts using dumbbells should really make those muscles sore. The first three days of the week, follow this routine. On the fourth, fifth and sixth days go at it for 25 minutes. After doing cardio, do spot reduction workouts on the spots you want to tone up/lose fat.

So, if it’s your arms that are troubling you, try out a five minute arm workout. If there is more than one part of your body that needs a good beating, then divide the time between the workouts and attack!

Rest Yes, we need to wake out of the peaceful slumber of our sleep in the middle of the night for sehri, pray and then go back to sleep only to be jostled awake by our 7am alarm clock.

The first day is bound to be a little rocky on your sleep cycle, but it’s really not that big of a deal. To compensate for the lost hours of sweet sleep, you could either take a power nap - and I mean a power nap - of about 30 minutes and immediately take a quick cold shower after. For the office goers, do try to tuck in early to bed and if no one’s watching, sneak a few minutes of sleep at your desk during prayer breaks and wash your face after.

This being summer, in the event of a power outage, the party mood can go south pretty bad, especially if the generator is not working, but let’s prepare for that scenario too.

Three quick fixes • For too-salty dishes: Toss a peeled raw potato into the mix.

It’ll soak up the excess salt. You can then add small amounts of fresh herbs and lemon juice to mask the rest of the saltiness.

• For too spicy dishes: Depending on the recipe, you can either dial down the heat with a little yoghurt or sugar, or both.

• For soggy pulao: Add a little ghee and reheat. Refresh the garnish, and you’re good to go.

Stock up on: • Extra fuel for the generator • Hand fans and battery-operated fans • Charge lights • Fresh batteries for the above • Mosquito coils High and dry Even worse than a power outage is a water shortage. It might happen.

Just stock up on water while you have it. You’ll find a use for it even if there isn’t a shortage. In addition to a full bucket in each bathroom, there should be at least one bucket in the kitchen, and a couple of gallon-bottles of mineral water in the store for consumption.

Stock up on: • Ghee and sugar. The two essentials of Eid cooking.

• Lemon and fresh herbs. They can mask the taste of most cooking boo boos.

• Kitchen towels. Most likely, the bua won’t be in, and these are lifesavers.

• Ice in the fridge to go with drinks.

• A few packets of frozen snacks.

In case some of your fresh Eid cooking hasn’t gone your way, you can fry, grill, or microwave up a few batches, serve with a fresh dip, and your meal is saved.

• Pickles, sauces, and condiments. To go with your insta-snacks.

• Before the guests get in, make sure to depersonalise the bathroom you have designated for guest use. This means, any item of personal use to you or people living in your house has to be taken out and stored somewhere else. This will prevent unwanted situations with less-than-polite guests.

• Baking soda, followed by a vinegar solution will usually clear up a clogged sink.

Stock up on: • A plunger for the unexpected clog • Extra toilet rolls • Electrical tape, in case of a leaky pipe • Air fresheners • A big plastic bucket with a lid, filled with water, in case of a shortage.

Hosting No light, no light It is important to get your generator and lifts serviced at least a week prior to Eid, because there’s no counting on help during the week of. If you’re a tenant, try asking your landlord if this has been done.

Eid, it’s a bigger hassle finding a solution. While a serious situation, such as a heart attack, needs expert medical care, there’s no reason why you can’t be prepared for small situations.

Make sure your first-aid kit is stocked with paracetamol, antiseptic, oral saline, burn ointment and over-the-counter treatments for heartburn.

It’s not very likely you will need any of this stuff, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.

Scuffed, badly worn shoes

Not your grandma’s version, the newer versions channel modern kimonos and come in a magnitude of brilliant prints. Voluminous sleeves on these breezy gowns, cinched at the waist that make you feel like you walked right out of a fantasy, can be a showstopper at any old Dhaka summer party. If you do decide to go with a loud pattern, keep the jewellery simple.

The exposed strap was pretty much a norm during the mid-nineties, and there are some contemporary styles today that accommodate this style. That’s why they make some bras with special emphasis on fancy straps. Whether you’re letting it show on purpose, or having a minor miscalculation, if the peeking strap looks worn and discoloured, it doesn’t matter how nice the clothes on top are. All your other efforts to look presentable will go unnoticed.

Now, good lingerie is expensive, but they do make convertible bras these days, so as long as the main thing is still serviceable, all you have to do is buy fresh straps and replace.

You’ll get more mileage out of your innerwear, and your image remains intact.

Peek-a-boo button gaps

Most of us pack on a few pounds as we get older, and that’s perfectly alright. What isn’t, however, is trying to squeeze yourself into the same clothes you were when you were three sizes smaller. Some of us men have excess body hair that needs to be groomed. The hair on your back is absolutely not negotiable. Get it trimmed by someone who can wield a beard trimmer or do one better, get it waxed. Your chest hair on the other hand, depends on what your girl likes. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to trim it down a little.

Make it work

Women have so much to work with, unlike guys during the summer. This is where you get to accessorise a

little. Try and find a suitable signature piece to incorporate into your outfits.

After our pleasant visit to The Glasshouse Brasserie a couple of months back, we were looking forward to what the fine dining restaurant located in the posh locales of Gulshan Ave had in store for their iftar cum dinner buffet. We will not waste much time describing their much talked about decor, consisting of upholstered chairs with soft cushions, chic wooden tables, large windows providing ample natural light and a balcony with with an extended overhead slanting glass roof with running water giving the feeling of being under a waterfall.

They give you the option of two takeaway boxes in the range of Tk400 – Tk550 respectively (a minimum of five box orders required). While one of the box consists of more conventional Bangladeshi iftar items like beef shish kebab, haleem, tehari (beef) and mini chicken saslic the other box is more continental and includes BBQ chicken, beef escalope, mashed potatoes, butter glassed vegetables, and creme of chicken soup.

Further ado, lets talks about their iftar menu. They offer a total of 23 items. If you do not reserve in advance, there are chances that you might not find a seat. Reservation also helps as you can relax and reach the venue just 20-30 minutes prior to breaking your daylong fast. The always eager-toplease waiters offer you pink lemonade and water on your table. After that you can go ahead and attack the wide range of food placed neatly in the balcony.

Things you cannot afford to miss: Beguni, jalebi, aloo chop, chicken chilli onion, beef with oyster sause, dahi vada, thai mixed vegetables, vegetable fried rice and fruit cocktail Things you would want to give a miss: Panch phoron vegetable, crunchy diced chicken, haleem, beef tehari, firni It comes as a pleasant surprise when a restaurant known for their continental dishes gets the basic iftar items of Bangladeshi tradition right. The crispy begunis and piajus are a delight on the palate while the perfect sourness and spiciness of the aloo chop reminds of the ones cooked by our grandmas.

What follows is far from spectacular the beef tehari lacks seasoning and the meat is chewy. While the tehari lacked seasoning, the panch phoron vegetable overflows with masala leaving behind a very unpleasant taste in your mouth.

The dahi vaha has the right flavour and

consistency. Fried chicken is usually a safe bet, but the crunchy diced chicken here is outright bland and oily.

After trying the so-so dishes in the traditional menu, we head for the continental menu. The vegetable fried rice gets its seasoning bang on. This is perfectly complimented by the sweet flavour of the chicken chilli onion. The surprising element here is the beef with oyster sauce which is definitely the best item in the menu. The mushroom and spinach combined with the soft meat makes you crave for more. We were a little disappointed as we could not try the vegetable chowmein.

As for the dessert items, a lot of places make the jalebi too sweet but not Glasshouse Brasserie. They have perfected their art of jalebi making – crispy with the right dash of sweetness, what more would you want. If you are feeling too full with the richness of the food, try their refreshing fruit cocktail.

Give the firni a miss.

The haleem, though mentioned as one of the buffet items, was served separately in a cup. We asked a customer for his opinion of their vital iftar dish. Like us, he too felt that it was not up to the mark.

Special mention should be given to the pink lemonade juice which feels like the nectar from God after a long day of fasting.

The iftar buffet of the Glasshouse Brasserie is a mixed bag of some really good dishes, and a couple of not so good ones. Totally based on the pleasant ambiance, swift friendly service and the merits of the beguni, jalebi, aloo chop and beef with oyster sauce we would grant the restaurant a three stars on a scale of five. The consumer friendly price of Tk850 adds half a star more. A fine score of three and half star.

A training programme on film-making, “Stop Not Film Banao” was recently launched, targeting cultural and film clubs of various universities of Bangladesh, sponsored by “Stop Not,” the popular snack brand from the house of Perfetti van Melle.
