Germany lift World Cup in epic final Goetze’s 113-minute strike crushes Argentina’s 28-year-long dream n AFP, Rio de Janeiro Mario Goetze scored a superb extra-time winner as Germany beat Argentina 1-0 to become the first European team to win a World Cup held in South America on Sunday. Bayern Munich star Goetze struck in the 113th minute to finally break Argentina’s resistance as Lionel Messi’s dream of emulating Diego Maradona ended in defeat. The decisive moment of a World Cup brimming with wonderful goals came with penalties looming in front of 74,738 fans at Rio de Janeiro’s famous Maracana Stadium. Andre Schuerrle burst clear down the left flank and crossed for Goetze. The 22-year-old took the ball on his chest and then volleyed past Sergio Romero to spark delirium amongst the largely pro-German crowd. Argentina and Messi were left squandering a handful of gilt-edged chances, including one that fell to Messi in the second half. Messi was largely anonymous for most of the evening and his miserable evening was summed up when a late free-kick to equalise sailed over the bar. The victory was celebrated raucous-

PM disappointed over progress in launching satellite n Muhammad Zahidul Islam Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed her disappointment over the sluggish progress in launching the country’s first satellite, Bangabandhu-1, and slammed Telecom Ministry officials for their lack of initiative regarding the project. “You people have wasted lots of time already for launching the satellite and by this time the work needed to be completed,” Sheikh Hasina said at a meeting with senior officials of Post, Telecommunication and Information and Technology Ministry. Visiting the ministry for the first time since taking office in her current tenure, Hasina also asked officials concerned to take more prompt actions to send the Bangabandhu-1 satellite in orbit by March 2017. “This type of work may face some  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4

ly by Brazilians in the crowd, who had dreaded the prospect of sworn South American rivals Argentina lifting the title in their backyard. An absorbing first half saw Germany forced into a reshuffle moments before kick-off with inexperienced Christoph Kramer replacing Sami Khedira after the Real Madrid star injured a calf in the warm up. With Bastian Schweinsteiger running midfield the Germans laid siege to Argentinian territory, passing smoothly and denying Messi a route into the game. Yet for all Germany’s early dominance they created little in the way of clear chances. And it was Argentina who were presented with a glorious chance to open the scoring. Toni Kroos misdirected a header back to Manuel Neuer to send Gonzalo Higuain racing through on goal. But with only Neuer to beat the Napoli striker dragged his shot wide to disbelief from fans and team-mates. Germany continued to probe for openings, and a Philipp Lahm pass almost put Thomas Mueller clear. The pace of Argentina on the  PAGE 2 COLUMN 6

HOLIDAY ROADS PAVED WITH PAIN

Constant ‘repairs’ a major headache for Eid commuters Islam and n Rabiul Abu Hayat Mahmud It is the same old story. Road repairs always occur right before Eid, and commuters, especially those on their way home to celebrate with their families, end up as victims. Like all previous years, repairs to the dilapidated roads and highways across the country have started to compound the misery of city dwellers, as during the month of Ramadan tailbacks take a toll on fasting commuters. Communications Minister Obaidul Quader too is his bizarre self, roaring and threatening the officials concerned with dire consequence if the roads are not repaired by July 20. Despite the minister’s frequent visits to the sites where repair work is on, commuters expressed their frustra-

tions to media over the shabby conditions of the roads across the country. A Dhaka-Chittagong highway commuter said: “I really can’t express how bad the roads are.” “Why are the roads repaired just before the Eid?” he asked, with no ready answer in sight. People travel round the year, but the authorities concerned become serious about the repair works just ahead of Eid. And that too is merely cosmetic; repairs put on the surface of the roads by using some brick and stone chips come off after a few days. Such kind of shoddy work opens up an opportunity for those linked to the upper echelon of the government to pocket a large amount of money in the name road repairs, a commuter alleged.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Thousands of Gaza civilians flee after Israeli warning n Agencies Thousands fled their homes in a Gaza town yesterday after Israel warned them to leave ahead of threatened attacks on rocket-launching sites, on the sixth day of an offensive that Palestinian officials said has killed at least 160 people, reports Reuters. “Those who fail to comply with the instructions will endanger their lives and the lives of their families. Beware,” read a leaflet dropped by the Israeli military in the town of Beit Lahiya, near the border with Israel. The warning came as Israeli naval commandos reportedly launched an early morning raid on a beach in the north of Gaza City, on the bloodiest day yet of the six-day Israeli assault, with 54 Palestinians reported killed, reports British newspaper The Guardian. In the worst single incident of the conflict so far, 22 people were killed

and 45 injured when two large Israeli bombs slammed into a house in the Tuffah neighbourhood of Gaza City where the city’s chief of police, Tayseer Batsh, was sheltering. Most of the injured were returning home from a mosque when they were caught by shrapnel from the blast. Militants in the Islamist-ruled Gaza Strip kept up rockets salvoes deep into the Jewish state and the worst bout of Israel-Palestinian bloodshed in two years showed no signs of abating despite mounting international pressure to cease fire. A Palestinian woman and a girl, aged 3, were killed in Israeli air strikes early yesterday, Gaza’s Health Ministry said. Hours earlier, the ministry said 18 people were killed when the house of Gaza’s police chief was bombed from the air in the single deadliest attack of Israel’s offensive.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1
