BAGHDADI’S SERMON SHOW OF CONFIDENCE

PM recalls WB’s role in Padma bridge issue She says a few pages of a diary cannot be the basis of cancellation of fund n Tribune Report Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday came down hard on a group of “conspirators,” who orchestrated the cancellation of the World Bank funding on Padma bridge. While addressing Communications Ministry officials at the secretariat yesterday, she said vested interests from the USA and also Bangladesh had provoked the global lender. Hasina said the World Bank had never been able to place any solid proof in support of its claim that a corruption conspiracy was going on centring the Padma Multipurpose Bridge project.

We have no shortage of foreign currency. We have a 21 million [dollar] reserve “They just produced some pages from a diary where it was stated who would get what amount of commission. This is not enough to prove that there was corruption in the project,” UNB quoted the premier as saying. According to bdnews24.com, Hasina said every time foreign ministers and delegates came to meet her, she talked to them about various issues. With foreign ministers and lawmakers, she had discussed business deals and interests such as how many blocks ConocoPhillips would get or whether Bangladesh would buy the oil. “...If I say I would note down

everything I discuss in a diary and take it as a document?...From now on our officials will write down everything in diaries wherever they go,” Hasina said, mocking at the World Bank. Terming the beginning of work for the Padma bridge “not so easy,” the premier said: “When we said we would build it with our own money, they [World Bank] came up with various new conditions.” She also spoke on some of disagreements that had arisen in the past with the World Bank. Hasina said the global lender had prescribed Bangladesh in the past to shut down BRTC and the Khulna Shipyard. “I came [to power] and said that could not happen. We kept the BRTC operative and now it is making profits,” Hasina said. “The country belongs to us and so do its problems. We know how things are done. Some of their people would come and give us a prescription and we have to follow it – that is not right. Our people are intelligent enough to think for ourselves,” Hasina told the Communications Ministry officials. “Bangalees can face any challenge. We have no shortage of foreign currency. We have a $21 billion reserve. We can easily spend a few billions from there,” she said. She also said talks were on regarding building road connectivity with India, China and Myanmar. If Bangladesh could build land connectivity up to Kunming of China, trade and  PAGE 2 COLUMN 6

National cricket all-rounder Shakib al Hasan yesterday sounded repentant over his spat with head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and admitted that he reacted angrily initially but later realised his mistake and apologised to the coach. “We often have argument with our parents where we get angry and say that I won’t stay at home, even don’t eat for a couple of days. The same thing happened with me. I had an argument with him (Hathurusingha) and I was angry at that time but later I apologised to him,” said Shakib after his return from London. There have been much furore across the country in the last few days over Shakib al Hasan not taking a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in the Caribbean Premier League(CPL) combined with his alleged threat to quit the national team after he had an argument with Hathurusingha regarding him joining the national camp before the end of the CPL. But after his arrival from London yesterday, Shakib was full of clarifications which also demonstrates a sign of the player’s obliging nature towards Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), contrary to the reports in the media after the news of his alleged threat broke out.

by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) as he left the team camp. “Life moves on. I am sure my team-mates will do everything possible so that we can achieve our dream of being champions,” he said. When Luiz Felipe Scolari was last in charge of Brazil, he encountered a similar situation. Ronaldinho, who was as important as Neymar is currently, was sent-off in the quarter-final against England in 2002 and Scolari had to plan a game without the formidable mid-fielder before eventually Brazil beat Germany in the final to lift the trophy for the fifth time. Though several groups earlier threatened to prevent the members of Chittagong Hill Tracts Commission from visiting the hill districts, local administration and law enforcers did not take any step, allege commission members and local organisations. The local police acted indifferently when an angry mob was demonstrating outside the Parjatan motel in Rangamati town on Saturday. They did not take any step to quell the agitators, said Hana Shams Ahmed, coordinator of the commission. “It seemed that the demonstrators were very powerful with support of the law enforcers. Or else they could not act so rough in front of the police,” she told the Dhaka Tribune. Hana said they would file a first information report (FIR) with Rangamati Police Superintendent Amena Begum today accusing three persons and several other unnamed persons. One of the suspects is Nurjahan, leader of Bangalee Somo Odhikar Andolon which along with five other organisations had protested the visit of the CHTC team and warned them not to go to the CHT region.

The team came under attack around 2am in front of the local DGFI office in Omda Miah Hill area while leaving the town. Three members of the team and the OC of Rangamati sadar police were injured while the microbus carrying seven of them damaged. It was escorted by two police vehicles. The attack was carried out by some 150-200 people, witnesses said.

Sultana Kamal blames six organisations for defying the conditions of the 1997 Peace Accord Police fired three blank shots to disperse the attackers who hurled bricks at the motorcade. No one was detained at that time. Later the CHTC team went to Chittagong and held a press conference. They alleged that the people who had been at risk of losing land occupied illegally might be behind the attack. Sultana Kamal, co-chairman of the CHTC, blamed six organisations of the CHT, which she said had been defying  PAGE 2 COLUMN 3

BASIC Bank board dissolved n Asif Showkat Kallol Two days after accepting the resignation of the BASIC Bank chairman, the Bank and Financial Institutions Division yesterday dissolved the bank’s board and appointed Alauddin A Mojid as its chairman. Mojid is currently serving as the chairman of Bangladesh Krishi Bank. The banking division had issued three circulars, including one on dissolution of the BASIC Bank board, Secretary Dr Aslam Alam told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday at his secretariat office. He also said the government would introduce performance guarantee for the chairmen and managing directors of all state-owned banks, and the process was started with the appointment of the BASIC Bank board of directors upon Bangladesh Bank’s endorsement. He said the government would appoint the six boards upon clearance from the Bangladesh Bank. Aslam Alam said the new board of directors would file a case with the money loan court and inform the Anti-Corruption Commission about the officials of BASIC Bank who deliberately gave loans to unknown people.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1
