Tarek confesses to seven murders The order came from a RAB high official after Nur Hossain talked to him Islam Shaon with n Ashif Narayanganj Correspondent Sacked RAB 11 commanding officer Tarek Sayeed Mohammad has confessed to killing Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others “to obey a high official’s order.” Two other officials and 30 of Tarek’s subordinates took part in the abduction and killing missions following Tarek’s instructions. Senior Judicial Magistrate KM Mohiuddin recorded Tarek’s confession under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) yesterday. Previously, two other sacked officials of Rapid Action Battalion – Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Comm SM Masud

Tarek says he was not present during the kidnapping but kept communicating with Arif and Rana over phone Rana – had given statements, confessing their involvement in the crime. In his confession, Tarek described how and when he got physically involved in the abduction of seven people and dumping their bodies into the Shitalakkhya River, and revealed his phone communication with the killers and plotters, our correspondent in Narayanganj reports. “Tarek Sayeed’s statement is very similar to those of his subordinates Arif and Rana. Like them he has given vivid description of the incident,” said Md Sakhawat Hossain Khan, chief of the association of lawyers in Narayanganj and a victims’ lawyer. He, however, refused to share any

details of the statement, saying he had faced trouble for talking to the media about Rana’s confession that RAB Additional Director General Col Ziaul Ahsan had been involved in the abduction and killing plan. At that time Sakhawat said Arif and Rana had described in details how the abduction and murders had been carried out, where the victims had been taken and killed, who had executed the murders and who had given the orders. The two had confessed that RAB ADG Zia had ordered the abduction and murders, the lawyer had told the Dhaka Tribune at that time. Several sources yesterday said Tarek had named Siddhirganj unit Awami League leader Nur Hossain as the mastermind of the whole incident who had influenced high officials at the RAB headquarters. However, before going to the RAB headquarters, Nur had visited Tarek at his Narayanganj office to discuss the plan. The ex-commanding officer asked him to talk with the “high official” first. After an agreement was reached, five RAB members led by Rana waited on the court premises where Nazrul had gone to attend a hearing. Nur had provided the information that Nazrul would go there. But of the five RAB members, Kamal Uddin got caught by Nazrul’s men for spying on them. When Nazrul’s associates released Kamal, Rana and other RAB members left the court premises, said a court source. Along with three RAB members Rana then took position in front of Fatulla Stadium on Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road where Major Arif had been waiting with his team. After finishing work at the court,  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Questions can be raised whether Indian authorities would hand him over to us until his trial there is over,” Tipu Munshi, the chairman of the

Former judge Khademul Islam, who headed the BPL tribunal, pronounced the punishment against them in the sanction judgement held yesterday. The three-member tribunal found 29-yearold Ashraful, apparently the first cricket star from the country, guilty of four charges of corruption in the second edition of the BPL. The charges were made by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (Acsu) in August last year. “All the four charges involved him [Ashraful] with match fixing in BPL 2,” said Justice Khademul. “All the charges against him were proven and he will remain suspended from all forms of cricket for eight years minus the provisional suspension that he has been serving since May 2013,” he added. The judge said Ashraful’s punish-

Iraq asked the United States Wednesday to carry out air strikes on Sunni jihadists, who attacked the country’s main oil refinery and seized more territory in the north. The appeal came as fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) were pressing a week-long offensive that has brought them close to the capital, and as Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki pledging to face down “terrorism.” “Iraq has officially asked Washington to help under the security agreement (between the two countries), and to conduct air strikes against terrorist groups,” Zebari told reporters in Saudi Arabia. However, Zebari said “a military approach will not be enough. We acknowledge the need for drastic political solutions.” The United States spent millions of dollars over several years training and arming a new Iraqi army after disbanding the Sunni-led force created by the late dictator Saddam Hussein. Washington has already deployed an aircraft carrier to the Gulf and sent marines to bolster security at its embassy in Baghdad, but President Barack Obama has insisted a return to combat in Iraq for US soldiers is not on the cards. However, Secretary of State John Kerry has said drone strikes could be used. Maliki vowed on television that “we

Frenzied Sao Paulo with beer and skittles

The Brazilian football fans of Sao Paulo chose to be content with the goalless draw of their team against Mexico on Tuesday. Why football is called a religion was perfectly realized as the busy streets were deserted and all shops and malls were closed on the occasion of the match. Moreover, the state government declared half holiday to allow people enjoy the match. So it was suddenly a surprising view to experience the ever busy roads of Paulista Avenue without cars and buses. ‘Paulista never sleeps’ is a popular phrase used by the Brazilians as almost all the corporate offices connecting with international business links are located there. But during the match against Mexico, it seemed like the busy schedules had come to an abrupt halt. All the roadside pubs were not authorized to set up the big screens and host the fans with beer and foods. A few were allowed and those generally were

Maliki security spokesman Lieutenant General Qassem Atta later said security forces would retake by Thursday morning full control of Tal Afar, a Shiite town in the north that lies along a strategic corridor to Syria.

That would provide a base from which to launch operations to recapture Mosul. With regional tensions rising, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the Islamic republic “will do everything” to protect Shiite shrines in Iraqi cities against the militant assault. And Saudi Arabia warned of the risks of a civil war in Iraq with unpredictable consequences for the region, while the United Arab Emirates recalled its envoy to Baghdad, voicing concern over “exclusionary and sectarian policies.” The crisis, which has displaced hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, threatens to break the country apart, while the assault on Baiji oil refinery Wednesday further spooked international oil markets.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1
