party Shamim Osman brought Nur into AL Family, leaders backtrack EKRAM MURDER TRIAL

The seven-murder accused had to prevent Khaleda’s long march in 1998 to earn trust kar Ali Manik and Ahmed n Julfi Zayeef, back from Narayanganj Shamim Osman has always bragged that he made Nur Hossain and Motiur Rahman Moti join the Awami League. The ruling Awami League lawmaker from a Narayanganj constituency, in fact, first revealed to party chief Sheikh Hasina at a meeting that he had convinced Nur Hossain, then a powerful leader of the BNP in the district, to join the Awami League.

Nur helped barricade the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Narayanganj to foil Khaleda Zia’s long march programme Nur Hossain is the main suspect of the sensational seven murders in the port city and is now in custody of Kolkata police. Moti, on the hand, has been in hiding since the murders. According to SM Akram, former Awami League MP from a Narayanganj constituency, Shamim Osman and he were having an informal talks with party chief Sheikh Hasina on a day in the late 1990s during Hasina’s first five-year term when Shamim told her that he had “made Nur join the Awami League.” “We were talking with the prime minister in an informal meeting when Shamim told her that he had made Nur

Hossain join the Awami League leaving the BNP,” Akram told the Dhaka Tribune. “So far as I can recall, Shamim said: ‘Apa, I did a good work. I made one of BNP’s big fish join the Awami League.’ As the prime minister asked who he was, Shamim said: ‘Nur Hossain. He was a big activist of the BNP in Siddhirganj. I have brought him in,’” Akram said. “The prime minister’s natural reply was: ‘You have done a good job,’” Akram said, talking to these correspondents at his residence in Narayanganj. “I can only tell you this that Shamim Osman made Nur Hossain join the Awami League. I do not have any more information in this regard,” he said, adding that Shamim was trying to take credit for bringing Siddhirganj’s influential BNP leader and activist Nur Hossain to the Awami League. Several months before the seven murders Nur was made the vice-president of Siddhirganj Thana Awami League. After Nur was exposed as an underworld don or a godfather of Narayanganj following the seven murders, Shamim’s followers in Narayanganj Awami League now hesitate to talk about Nur’s joining the party and they try to hide Shamim’s role in this. Nur Hossain has long been known as Shamim Osman’s man and the Narayanganj lawmaker even defended Nur after his name had come up as the main accused of the seven murders.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Finally Lady Luck Mueller treble puts Ronaldo in shade smiles on Messi n AFP, Salvador RAIHAN MAHMOOD

from Rio de Janerio

Lionel Messi has scored hundreds of goals in his career and he rarely celebrates wildly after scoring which he is good at doing and accustomed to as well. However, in Argentina’s first match of this World Cup against a stout Bosnia and Herzegovina side on Sunday at the Maracana, the four time footballer of the year looked ecstatic after scoring which also triggered wild celebration among the thousands of Argentine fans in the stands. Messi was definitely under pressure as the physical approach of Bosnian defenders and the lack of space kept him frustrated at times. He was not up to the mark in the first half, but the introduction of Higuain at the beginning of the 2nd half allowed him the space and his preferred role. Consequently he produced the magic he was expected to as he drove through the Bosnian midfield before a lovely one-two with Higuain placed him at the edge of D box and then he sprinted past couple of challenges like a venomous snake before unleashing his typically sliding left-footed drive past Bosnian goalie Asmir Begovic who dived in vain as the ball hit the inside of the post before going in to give Argentina a 2-0 lead. Waving his hand in the air, he sped to the left hand flag and was duly surrounded by his teammates. Messi even raised his hand in acknowledgement  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Thomas Mueller spectacularly stole the limelight from World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo on Monday with a hat-trick in a stunning 4-0 demolition of 10-man Portugal at the World Cup. Bayern Munich star Mueller marked his 50th international appearance in style with a 12th-minute penalty and a first-half injury time strike.

chael Schumacher had emerged from his lengthy coma, the three-time champions tore into Portugal. After Ronaldo had missed his only chance of the first half and Sami Khedira went narrowly wide from 30 yards after goalkeeper’s Rui Patricio botched

clearance, Germany struck in the 11th minute. Joao Pereira hauled down Mario Goetze and Mueller tucked the penalty kick into Patricio’s bottom right corner. On the half-hour mark, it was 2-0  PAGE 2 COLUMN #

He then grabbed his third in the 78th minute with defender Mats Hummels having also got on the scoresheet in the first period. Ronaldo, who was playing despite having suffered a knee injury, hardly figured as his career World Cup goals tally remained on a paltry two. Mueller was also involved in the first half dismissal of Portugal defender Pepe after he appeared to be headbutted by the Real Madrid man. The government food procurement drive is unlikely to achieve their target this year as the process is being affected by multifarious problems.

Bangladesh did everything right in the first half of their opening one-day international against India on Sunday. After a string of poor batting displays earlier in the year, the hosts reunited and put up an impressive 272.

Jamil Khan with n Mohammad Our Feni Correspondent It seems that the people of Feni have almost forgotten the gruesome killing of Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque Ekram that occurred in broad daylight and in front of many in the town on May 20. Even a week back, local people and activists of ruling Awami League were staging demonstrations and protest rallies including shutdowns to demand justice. But now they have stopped. Not only the party supporters, but also the family members have now stopped talking about the trial. It appears that nothing has happened and everything is back to normal again. Insiders say a top ruling party leader of the district has been able to manage the demonstrators by offering them lucrative positions in the party and huge sum of money. The Dhaka Tribune has also published stories about it on June 4 and June 12. The district Awami League leaders did not give any appropriate answer about their stopping the ongoing demonstrations. Abdur Rahman, president of the district unit, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Actually, we will not stop our agitation. The police have already arrested a number of people for their involvement in the killing. Meanwhile, the investigation is also underway in the right direction.”  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4

Chances of exploring 2 deep-sea blocks flimsy n Aminur Rahman Rasel Chances of exploring oil-gas in two offshore deep-sea blocks has become flimsy after US-based energy company ConocoPhillips missed a deadline yesterday for informing the government whether it would invest in the project. The company has not found prospects for exploring wells in block 10; found prospects for block 11 to be highly risky, and as a result have now sought a revision in the tariffs for hydrocarbon exploration, as indicated in the company’s report of a 2D seismic survey. In June 2011, a production sharing contract (PSC) was signed between ConocoPhillips Bangladesh Exploration 10/11 Ltd and state-run Petrobangla for the exploration of offshore blocks 10 and 11, the country’s first ever deepwater hydrocarbon hunt. “ConocoPhillips has completed two seismic acquisition projects totalling 5,900km of 2D data, and invested approximately $20m exploring offshore Bangladesh,” Managing Director of ConocoPhillips Bangladesh, Thomas J Earley, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday. “A prospect has been mapped in Block 11 which is a high risk feature but could be of significant size if gas is dis-

covered during exploration drilling,” he claimed. As per the PSC, if the contractor does not commit drilling of an exploration well after geophysical survey, Petrobangla can terminate the contract after three years from the signing of the contract, a deadline which expired yesterday. “After investing in an extensive technical and economic assessment

In 2011, ConocoPhillips and Petrobangla signed a PSC for the country’s first ever deepwater hydrocarbon hunt of Block 10 and 11, ConocoPhillips has engaged the Bangladesh government to explain the constraints associated with the current production sharing contract associated with the blocks,” Thomas said. “We are committed to working with the Government to pursue opportunities to supply gas from deepwater Bay of Bengal to satisfy domestic demand which provide competitive returns to investors,” he added.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4
