230 more brought back after 18 days The passengers, who had wanted to go to Malaysia illegally, had been without any food for at least two days before they were rescued and had protested against the human traffickers which resulted in the killing of six of them. “Although I was told that I would be sent to Malaysia by air, I was forced to board the trawler and we had been stranded in the sea for 18 days. Our food had exhausted, and the trawler’s engine had also stopped working,” said Mithun Sheikh, one of the rescued passengers, at Teknaf police station. Two hundred and thirty more men were brought back yesterday to Teknaf from the trawler stuck near the St Martin’s Island in the Bay of Bengal. Teknaf police received the illegal passengers brought in two trawlers around 6:15pm. They have been kept at the Teknaf police station. Meanwhile, a human trafficker named Kamal Sarker was arrested from Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi yesterday for illegally trying to send one of the rescued passengers to Malaysia.

The passenger, Naim, and his father Asad Mia had filed a complaint about Kamal with Shibpur police station. Officer-in-Charge Khandakar Mizanur Rahman said they were interrogating Kamal to glean information about others, if any, involved with the human trafficking incident. Mithun Sheikh from Jhenaidah told this correspondent: “I started our journey along with four of my friends from Jhenaidah on May 23. The next day we reached Teknaf and met with a broker whom we did not know. He insisted that we board the small trawler although a broker in our area, named Alim Laskar, had told us that we were going to Malaysia legally by plane. “The broker at Teknaf held a gun at us and forced us to board a small fishing boat. We boarded at Katabunia Ghat of Teknaf and were headed towards the main ship anchored about 10km away from St Martin’s Island.” After boarding the ship at 2am on May 25, Mithun saw there were many other passengers on the ship. He said the ship had started its journey for  PAGE 2 COLUMN 3

from Sao Paulo, Brazil It was a different start to the morning of a weekday in Sao Paulo yesterday. To mark the inaugural day of the Fifa World Cup the government had earlier declared a public holiday across the state which made the millions of residents stay back at home instead of rushing to their work – leaving the busy roads and metro stations quite empty.

cured a low cross to Nikica Jelavic. But the latter’s mis-hit fell into the feet of the Real Madrid fullback and rolled into the near post net. Credit goes to Oscar, whose tenacity in midfield helped him win the ball back at the edge of the Croatia half. He tapped the ball forward and it was

The deal signed with China for constructing the country’s first ever tunnel under a river was apparently the result of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s clever “banquet diplomacy.” “Beijing was not ready to sign the deal during the official talks as the Chinese construction company concerned was reluctant,” said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam at a press briefing yesterday. Bangladesh and China signed a memorandum of understanding on constructing a multilane tunnel under the Karnaphuli River. Sheikh Hasina raised the issue during a banquet dinner hosted in her honour, where Chinese finance and commerce ministers were present, on June 9. Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang instantly asked his officials to sort out the deal and it was eventually signed late at night, Shahriar said. A senior official of the Foreign Ministry said at the dinner table Hasina had instructed Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haq and other Bangladeshi officials to negotiate the deal with the Chinese side. “The Bridges Division secretary [Khandkar Anwar ul Islam] had the [draft of the] MoU on a memory stick and the Chinese side opened their office at night to negotiate with us,” he said. After discussion, it was decided that it would be a government-to-government deal instead of government-to-private sector and Beijing would later select another company

A Bangladeshi in a different Sao Paulo There was however no short of business on the day as the garment sector, the retail shopping complex at the center of Bras, the hub of garments trading in Sao Paulo, cashed in by selling team jerseys. As I was strolling, I wasn’t much surprised to find the Brazilians buying their national team jersey, but I was quite surprised to find a Bangladeshi immigrant selling them. Khairul Islam, the Bangladeshi trader was enjoying a very busy time. He said: “I sold about 2000 jerseys in three hours, for the last two days the trade was getting warm but it reached the
