While we would normally go for store bought air fresheners, when it comes to our favourite aromas, nothing beats the scent of “home,” be it the warm aroma of chocolate cake baking in the oven, or the refreshing scent of lemons filling the kitchen air. This week Avenue T gives out a few DIY tips to create light, airy home scents that leave a fresh, yet lasting aroma. These fragrances can be created by simply infusing a few natural herbs and fruits with water. Once made, they can be stored in jars and reused every time your house needs a loving reminder of the peace and calm of the place you call home.

Ginger-almond affair

A tangerine touch You’ll need

1 orange 2 cinnamon sticks (or 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon) 1/2 tablespoon whole cloves (or 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves) 1/2 tablespoon whole allspice (or 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice) 1 anise star (optional)

Directions

Chop the orange into long slices. In a pot add two cups of water and add all other ingredients. Let the water come to a boil and simmer. This mixture gives out a refreshingly orange aroma and the scent carries to other rooms.

You may also place this in jars and reheat when required.

You’ll need

1 orange (or peel from 2 oranges) 1/4” finger of ginger, sliced (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger) 1/2 teaspoon almond extract/powder

Scintillating citrus

Directions

Chop the orange into slices. In a large pot boil two cups of water and add all the ingredients. Bring to a boil; however, don’t let the orange slices burn.

You’ll need

½ teaspoon mashed mint leaves 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 limes

Directions

Chop the limes into slices. Place all ingredients in a pot with two cups of water and bring to a boil. Allow the mixture to simmer.

Tips:

For a stronger fragrance, double the ingredients in a larger pot.

Keep an eye on the boiling water to make sure you’re not burning the citrus fruits. Ensure that the water continues to simmer rather than burn.

You can reuse this mix upto two to three times; you may store it in the fridge for upto two weeks.

No more missing Facebook notifications Many of us are Facebook addicts; we’re on that thing for a good chunk of the day. Whether it’s for play or business, apart from statuses, notifications are something we always look forward to. Some of us have a large lot of friends with many notifications that we can’t keep up with. There are times, perhaps, when we might want to go back to a certain notification that will take ages to scroll down to. Well, no more of that. Here are the steps to help you no longer miss any notification.

• Go ahead and open the Facebook list management page www.facebook.com/ bookmarks/lists and choose Close Friends.

• To the right, you’ll see a column with a few suggestions that you can add to this list. Most likely you’ll be adding the friends to this list through the search bar above the suggestions.

• After you’ve added everyone desired, go to the drop down menu under Manage List (located next to Notifications at the top-right) to check off all things you want to be notified about. For example unchecking Games means you won’t be getting anymore notifications from silly game requests.

• Finally, hit the Notifications drop down menu (next to Manage List) to choose if you want only notifications or notifications and e-mails together.

Sony’s Xperia Z2 Tablet is ridiculously skinny, as if you were holding its smaller cousin smartphone. One significant difference between this tablet and the rest is that the 10.1-inch Z2 is waterproof. Not a big deal, sure. It’s nothing new but the performance under the hood is a boastful upgrade.

Design Think of this as a bigger version of the smartphone. It’s sleek, sexy and thinner than any other tablet.

Apart from its weight, the design itself hasn’t changed too much. They

seem to have considered no fault in the recent looks of the Xperia line.

Which, in all honesty, doesn’t need a redesigned figure. As expected, the full HD (1920x1200-pixel) resolution display churns out 224ppi. You won’t find a massive difference between this screen and an iPad Air’s unless you pit them next to each other. But it remains clean and crisp, as sharp edges on texts and icons are worthy of HD quality.

Performance It possesses an Android 4.4.2 KitKat, right up to date. The quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor is paired with a sturdy 3GB

of RAM, clocking in at an impressive 2.3GHz. Operating through the new Android interface is smooth with no lag in between switching homescreens and different menus.

The battery can run past 13 hours with constant video play. Which brings us around to its 8-megapixel rear camera. It may seem a bit much for a tablet but then again, you won’t have to complain about how terrible the picture quality is.

It’s not a huge bump up from its predecessor, but it’s worth investing in. That’s if you’re into design and overall entertainment quality. You can purchase the Z2 for Tk59,900 at stores like Gadget & Gear.

The art of notes | Mahmood Hossain It’s always a joy when creativity comes into play

Notegraphy is a fantastic app for those who are tired of the boring way of expressing their thoughts into words. It’s definitely something a few of us here at DT would love to play around with. This app brings in a wonderful mesh of colourful typography. The design, as you would expect, is aesthetically pleasing. The UI has been put

together to make it user friendly, without deviating into a too simplistic design. The steps to publishing a note, however, could take a bit of work. But it’s nothing too difficult once you get the first one going.

When you launch the app, it will ask you to sign up with either your Twitter, Facebook, or Email accounts.

The reason for the simple sign up is so you are able to share your notes through social media, including Instagram. Once you’ve signed in, you’re taken to its main screen to create a note. The cool thing is there is no limit to what you want to write.

It becomes a stylish way of writing statuses and sharing quotes when you are given a variety of design choices, once you choose “style it” at top of the display.

The last step, of course, is to publish your words through all the social networking apps on your smartphone. You’ll be able to fiddle around with its other options and settings by swiping the screen from the left. Notegraphy is free to download at both the Google Play Store and the AppStore.

2014 Hyundai Accent Fresh from its complete makeover, the Accent unmistakably displays the Korean car manufacturer’s ability to instil seductive styling into an affordable, fuel efficient and fun-todrive package The 2014 Hyundai Accent is pretty much the same car that debuted in 2012, but we’re still charmed by how it feels like a bigger car than it really is. The ride is smooth, with less harshness over rough surfaces than some other subcompacts. It has mind blowing fuel efficiency which is far better than most of its rivals. Cars like this are supposed to be just basic transportation devices, but the 2014 Accent makes a case for itself as a substitute for a number of larger vehicles.

Exterior

The exterior of the latest Accent has gone through a few major changes.

For instance, the front grille is different as there’s an oval cut, in the middle of which there’s a single chrome bar. The front headlights are on the edge in vertical shape. There are fog lights at the bottom. The side mouldings give the car a shape which everybody would like and appreciate. The door handles and side view mirrors are of the same colour as that of the exterior.

Interior

On the inside, the seats are very cosy and comfortable. The spacing of the rear seats have been slightly increased to give ease to adult passengers. There is enough head and leg room available for the passengers, both in front and rear to provide them with proper comfort.

There’s a sliding sun-roof as well.

The cabin of the car has been tailored in such a manner that it looks better and more spacious than before.

The new Accent has active front head restraints, front seat sideimpact airbags and side curtain airbags to keep you safe if any unfortunate incident takes place.

There is a traction control system and antilock brake assist available as standard in this car. There is also an optional stability control system available in this car which keeps the car stable if it skids and prevents it from understeer or oversteer.

On the road, the Accent’s compliant suspension makes for a fairly smooth ride, while the cabin is respectably quiet at highway speeds. Due to those soft underpinnings, however, the Accent isn’t as entertaining in corners as its rivals but the fact remains that the Hyundai Accent 2012 is an affordable car which is stylish and comfortable as well.

While there is no absolute time to change an air filter that applies to everybody, but there are certain things to consider when deciding if your air filter needs to be replaced. Semi-clogged air filters hurt fuel economy for the same reason you don’t like to run with a potato in your mouth. The question is, when is your filter dirty?

Driving conditions can greatly affect how often an air filter needs to be changed.

The air quality is an important determining factor in your air filter’s condition. A general rule of thumb is to perform a visual inspection of your air filter and clean it every 2,000 to 4,500 kilometres. Most of the time, an air filter will not need to be replaced at that time, unless the driving conditions are unfavourable. Once your filter hits 6,000 to 8,000 kilometres of use, you should check it again and be ready to replace it. Some air filters may last until 10,000 kilometres of use or more, but you should never wait that long to inspect your filter.

The lack of wishing wells in the country must have triggered anger among the citizens. They have started throwing tissue papers, packets, plastic bags and whatnot under the sun into the imaginary lakes which in reality are the roads of Dhaka.

They have utterly forgotten the difference between “dustbins” and “roads.” We might not be launching space shuttles, but according to a statement by Dhaka South City Corporation’s chief waste management officer Sheikh Mohammad Saved Iqbal last year, some 2400 tonnes of solid wastes are being generated every day in the city. That’s more than the launch mass of a space shuttle. 1,500 tonnes are left unattended in the city.

As if all of this was not enough already; people here take things too literally. Just because there is water and a hole (a drain) people often mistake it for commodes.

The lakes have become bathtubs for many while the walls have become canvases.

The roads have turned into seas piled with litter. Every morning cleaners brush through the streets which, instead of removing the dust, pollutes the air by further diffusing the dust everywhere. The number of public dustbins on the roads is less and sparsely located. The municipality officers responsible for clearing the dustbins remind us of our childhood when our moms would ask us to clean our rooms and we would just pick up the mess from one place and dump it elsewhere.

Never tolerate back talk from your children. You must stand your ground and prove to them that this is NOT okay. Refuse to tolerate any such behaviour. The next time your child talks back, do not tolerate it and tell them it is not okay. Be stern, but do not be rude. You must cultivate a culture of respect in your household to instill these characteristics in them.

It is as simple as that. If she still carries on after you have told her a couple of times, think of her other qualities that may overshadow this behaviour; if there isn’t any, think again about the relationship as she may not be inclined to hear you in the future either.

The next time you feel angered take control of yourself, try these easy steps to keep calm and carry on:

Actually it should be the opposite: the deceiver is the one who has belittled himself. I know it is painful, but if while engaged he was unfaithful to you, what guarantee do you have he would not have done the same after marriage? Once again it’s that time of year when the summer heat has lulled you into a feeling of constant idleness. Mid afternoon naps, late night movie sessions and late mornings seem second nature. As much as we love breakfast time, we love brunches even more for giving us ample time to unwind and welcome the day at our pace. Not only do brunches allow us to lounge at home recovering after a night out in town, it also lets us recount the highlights of the previous day. Here’s a stress free guide to a lazy brunchon minus the fussy frills and elegant fixtures of an elegant sit-in dinner:

wonders for your menu and your appetite: cupcakes, muffins, donuts, sandwiches and other cold snacks should be the order of the day. Prepare your kitchen by keeping everything ready for an impromptu stuffed omelette or a plain sunny side up.

If you want to be a stress free host to your brunch and are planning it at home or at the balcony, set up your table and neatly stack up your plates and cutlery instead of laying them out on the table. Use the best of everything – china, cutlery, tablecloths. Even the plainest of meals can be made to look festive as long as they’re served using festive china. Brunches are meant to be lazy and relaxing so keep the food on the lighter end. Place all bakery items on large serving dishes and allow your guests to help themselves. Go big on eggs; scrambled, stuffed or poached, eggs are a versatile item that are quick to cook and great to taste. If you are in the mood to cook up a few dishes, try staples such as fruit salads, rolls, French toast, casseroles or pastas. To round out the meal make sure you have two to three pitchers of juice.

Orange with a twist of lime, strawberry yoghurt, and a good old mojito can round it out. And of course, we could all do with a good ol’ caffeine kick so let’s not forget to keep our freshly brewed coffee handy!

A quite evening walk in the park, a relaxing midday nap or a long draw on a cigarette – everyone has their own ways to unwind and destress themselves.

Some have one particular destressing solution while others have none at all. For those stuck in the middle ground unable to find that ideal relaxation method there’s restorative yoga. The simple, yet effective yoga poses help restore, unwind and relax the body and mind. Try any of these moves to relax your muscles, increase self-awareness and calm your mind.

Warm up with breathing exercises or cat and cow poses. Once you feel more at ease, do each pose before bed, holding the pose for anything between five to 20 minutes.

Kneel down on a mat ensuring that your big toes are in contact as your knees are spread mat-width apart.

Bend over, lowering your abdomen and moving your forehead towards the floor as you extend out your arms. Hold this pose for a minute

This pose gently eases your muscles and relaxes your back, shoulders and neck. If performed correctly, the child’s pose can give an overall sense of both physical and emotional relief.

Lie on your back on the floor and put your legs upwards. Rest the calves of your legs on the wall and relaxingly rest your hands on your sides. If resting your legs on the wall seems like too much work, you can try bending your knees and placing your legs on a bed or a chair. This pose’s reverse effect has quite a few benefits. As you keep your legs up you encourage blood to flow towards your stomach and your digestive organs. This reverses the lymphatic drainage and helps give you a calm, relaxed feeling.

On a mat, take a bolster or a pillow and kneel on top of it. Sit sideways lowering your right hip down and bending both your knees at a 90-degree angle, so that your left leg is bent on top of your right leg.

Next, take the right leg behind you, while it’s still bent at 90-degrees, leaving your left leg where it was.

Once you’ve positioned both the legs, just rest and relax on the bolster.

This yoga pose helps relax the leg muscles which is both comforting and unwinding.

It’s not too often you get to sit down with a charming and stylish bloke like Daniel Muhor, the GM of The Westin Dhaka. Expectations were minimal, but it was a pleasant surprise as he walked out to greet us. Muhor is cut from a different cloth; you can easily confuse him for an Australian rugby player.

An athlete he was, an Aussie he is. However, this man presents himself in the best of fashion.

Dressed in a check pattern, contrast collared shirt, vibrant shade of red casual trousers, a fresh pair of purple suede derbys, and multi-coloured socks, this was a man I was looking forward to having a chat with. We took a seat at the top floor lounge, closed off from the rest of the hotel with an amazing view.

The beginning of the conversation made for a promising interview. He’s getting hitched soon, so there would be no questions about if he’s available in the market.

Not to worry future Mrs Muhor, your beau is as clean-cut as the white cuffs of his shirt.

How long have you been in the service industry?

Coming on 20 years now. My parents have been in the industry for about 45 years, so I was sort of born into it. They had restaurants, bars and small hotels. I grew up enjoying it, enjoying people and ended up getting my Bachelors of Business in Catering and Management in Melbourne. From there I went to Thailand, China, India, and now in Dhaka.

20 years is quite a long time.

Surely, there have been some very strange requests from guests.

Oh, goodness. Too many. I mean that’s the great thing about this industry. Every day is a different day. Each day has its highs and at times there are challenges as well.

In the service industry, we deal with guests that come from all over the world and have different levels of expectations. We also have around 500 associates that we have to try to educate in the western way.

How’s the relationship with other employees and how important is that to you?

I always tell people, when they talk about it, that people are my most important asset. I mean I can’t run this hotel on my own.

And caring for our associates is one of the four major components

in the associate success profile.

So it’s not just about caring for guests, business, or the owner. A happy associate will enjoy what they’re doing, and then pass that on through their services to make happy guests.

Seeing genuine smiles on the faces of guests, how satisfying is that?

Look, that’s the reason why we’re in the industry to be honest. Every morning we read some guest comments out, and when you hear that people are going that extra mile, it makes me extremely proud.

Our philosophy here at Westin is that the guest must leave feeling better than when they arrived.

That gives us a hint to what keeps you going every morning, day after day...

Umm...possibly the salary? (We both laugh). Jokes aside, to be in this industry you don’t need to learn brain surgery or you don’t have to be a rocket scientist. You need to have the passion for it, a lot of the time it’s common sense.

Putting it all together, you continue to evolve in this industry. And

as I’ve said to you, every day is different. It’s never the same. The industry also gives you the freedom to be innovative. Here, you can really challenge tradition, I love trying to do new and different things.

You’ve spent plenty of time abroad. What’s different in Dhaka compared to the other cities you’ve been in?

I honestly think Dhaka is such an underrated city. The owner and I see each other every day, and he has a passion for this as I do.

And I feel there is a huge, genuine sincerity within the people here in Bangladesh. My position is not the highest paid, but it does give you a lot of satisfaction. And as we were

talking about earlier, to see these guys getting up and cleaning 25 rooms a day and running on high occupancies, still doing it with a smile and buzz. When people ask me how’s Dhaka, I tell them I love Dhaka.

How long do you see yourself here with Westin?

For a few years to come. Mr Noor Ali (the owner) is a very successful businessman here in Dhaka. We’re building a new hotel, which is the Sheraton Banani so that’ll also be under the parent company Unique Hotels and Resorts. We’ll be working for the next 18 months to open that. And this Westin is about seven years old. Generally in 10 years, we have a property improvement plan (PIP) that will bring this one back to the standard.

Like anything after 10 years you’ve got to refresh.

Your ultimate goal is seeing other people at ease, seeing them relax.

What do you do to unwind?

I love playing golf. Every Friday I’m at Kurmitola. I have an athletic background, and I’d be lying if I said I don’t enjoy good food and good wine. I mean these are great social pleasures. But more so I love spending time with my family. My fiancée, in particular, who travels back and forth from Melbourne.

It’s because it’s a 24/7 operation so you have to find time to unwind.

But the biggest negative here in Dhaka is the traffic. It annoys me so often that there are times I won’t go outside for three days. Fortunately, I live within the hotel. I can only imagine it in the rain; I haven’t experienced the wet season here yet so...

Oh, yeah. It’s bad. Really bad.

It’s around that time where people develop even shorter

tempers.

Absolutely! I used an example the other day. I had a great flight, connections were great, came in from Malaysia Airlines, and straight through immigration.

Waited an hour and a half for the bags. So you can imagine the impact from that hour and a half had on my entire journey. But we try to make it as smooth as possible for the guests through our focus on the welcome and the farewell. It’s about eat well, move well, sleep well, play well, feel well, and work well. You’ve got your Westin Workout (related to play well), all the Heavenly products and I believe we were the pioneers in that brand.

That’s all about the Westin well being. If you’re going to bring a concept to a hotel, you want to get the best. We have Thai therapists, best in terms of a spa.

We’re in the midst of recruiting an Italian chef for our Italian restaurant just to keep things authentic and genuine.

Linen

Forget about bed sheets and upholstery, linen can be a refreshing choice when it comes to fabric for making your kurtas, dresses and the ever popular palazzos. Although linen can be a real pain because it wrinkles so easily, it’s one of the best materials to opt for during hot months. One trick is to pick this fabric in darker shades so any wrinkles are less visible.

Silk

You have to make sure it’s the real deal. Synthetic versions are not suitable for summer as they don’t absorb moisture (let’s just call it sweat) as well as its natural counterpart.

Cotton

You know all about it already.

Wear it, own it, love it!

What not to wear • A metallic belt. Along with a little sparkle when holding up your pants, you can use this to dress up the sheath dress and give yourself a more feminine, hourglass shape.

• Enough underwear to last the duration of your trip. You can re-wear everything else, but not these.

• A long scarf. Aside from dressing up your outfit, adding a pop of colour, you could use it for a cover-up if you go somewhere conservative, and warmth if it gets chilly.

• A pair of dangly earrings, a decent menswear watch, sunglasses, and a chunky bangle. You don’t have to wear them all at once, but mix and match to dress up your outfit.

• Fold the garments flat, and then roll them up so that they take up very little space in your carryall. Now you have plenty of space to stash your shopping.

At my most lazy moments, I walk around in my home in some athletic shorts, a beat up T-shirt, and sandals. My girlfriend can’t stand me looking like that. Can you please explain to her it’s okay since there is no one to impress at home?

Wearing any kind of clothing that is torn or beat up should be thrown away or recycled somehow. There is lazy, and then there is really lazy. Your significant other is half right. Yes, it is your own home, and no one is around. But it is a good habit to keep things as neat as possible.

You never know when you have an unexpected or uninvited guest arriving, and we all know how common that scenario is in this country.

In other words, you should never find yourself in a look that says, “I’ve given up on life so I resort to complete despair.” Put on a better yet comfortable T-shirt, mix up the bottoms from time to time, and substitute the flip-flops with some quality slippers.

It depends on who you are having brunch with. Most likely, it’s someone you know and can get personal with. If that is the case, a simple linen or light cotton, pastel shirt works fine teamed with some casual trousers or shorts. A pair of nice leather sandals should round things up. If it’s somewhat of a formal meeting, just raise things up a notch. Sandals should be loafers (or boat shoes), stay away from shorts, and the shirt should be more fitted, not as relaxed.

Aggravating problem skin You’ve probably noticed a multitude of acne-clearing scrubs in the market.

The whole point of exfoliation is to get rid of dead skin cells. Using an abrasive scrub on skin affected with acne won’t do you any favour. All you’ll be doing is aggravating your skin further and risk major scarring. A better solution for those with chronic breakouts is to visit a dermatologist.

Don’t take the DIY route with this one. The doctor will either prescribe you some medication and/or cream to help you stay clear.

Over cleansing We tend to go a bit overboard with washing our mugs with harsh soaps and using strong astringents during humid weather. The idea is to get all the grease off our faces, so washing them 3-4 times a day makes sense, right? Wrong! Our skin is smarter

than we give it credit for. When we try to remove all traces of oil, the skin tries to re-balance itself by producing even more oil. Take it easy there, tiger.

Unless you’ve been rolling around in dirt all day, washing your face twice a day is just fine. Don’t stop moisturising either because it’s hot.

That will send your oil glands into overdrive as well. Look for a water based formula.

Stress itself Not only bad for your mental health, major stress could be what’s between you and killer skin. Hives, rashes, a sallow complexion and even more breakouts. No one wants that. Stuffed capsicum with tzatziki, a greek yoghurt dip that is smooth, creamy and utterly refreshing Cucumbers are cool, refreshing and a deliciously relaxing treat. These capsicums stuffed with tzatziki can be savoured as a stand-alone, or they can double up as a light brunch special by pairing them with pita bread or cucumber slices.

Capsicum stuffed with tzatziki The juicy crunch of the cucumber is teamed with the rich tang of tzatziki sauce. Originally a greek dip, tzatziki’s creamy beauty lies in the goodness of strained yoghurt and the addition of garlic and olive oil. Whether enjoyed on its own or as a dip, this is one sauce to be enjoyed nevertheless. Bon appetit!

2 boxes of Aarong low fat yoghurt 4 capsicums, cut in half 2 medium sized cucumbers 3 cloves of garlic, pressed 2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 4 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon freshly grounded black pepper Salt to taste

Directions:

Pour two boxes of yoghurt through a cloth strainer (or a cheese cloth that has been quadrupled) to allow all the excess water to drain from the yoghurt. Leave the yoghurt there and allow the excess water to slowly drip through. Once all the water is drained, the yoghurt should be extremely thick and creamy rather than runny and light. This is an essential step in making the perfect tzatziki

sauce. Take your cucumbers and peel the skin off. Finely chop the cucumber peels. Using your hands squeeze out any excess water and place them in a separate bowl. Deseed the cucumbers and finely chop up the rest of it, squeezing out any excess water. Chop the garlic and mix it with the cucumber, lemon juice, olive oil, pepper and yoghurt. Add salt to taste.

Slice each capsicum in half and stuff it with the tzatziki sauce.

You love the person you are about to marry. Reminding yourself of what the foundation of your relationship is what calms the nerves a little. This is the person you have decided to take as your life partner. He or she is the one you trust more than anyone else on this planet. Now, if you have found yourself in an arranged marriage, just keep in mind what you are initially doing it for. It could be for your family
