Meanwhile, the high-powered probe committee formed to investigate the seven murders in Narayanganj submitted its primary progress report to the High Court, but details from the report were not revealed. The Home Ministry and police have been claiming that they are following the “required procedure,” but have not yet elaborated what procedures they have completed so far. Attorney General Mahbub-e-Alam yesterday claimed that the delay in ar-
did not fix any timeframe for the arrest. The High Court on Sunday ordered the arrests of former RAB 11 commanding officer Lt Col Tarek Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander MM Rana. On April 27, seven people, including Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar, were abducted; their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya River after three days.

The issue of arresting the three former RAB officials suspected of their involvement in the Narayanganj seven murders still seems wrapped in mysteries even after four days of the High Court order for their arrest. None of the authorities – the Home Ministry, the police, the Armed Forces Division and the Directorate of the Inter-Services Public Relations – have so far made their stances clear and explained the delay in arresting the

Sources allege that for a couple of years, a section of parliament officials have been selling these fabricated stickers containing the emblem of the Jatiya Sangsad and “parliament member” written under it. According to the sources inside the parliament, these dishonest staffs are also involved in printing paper pads and business cards for lawmakers, as the official printing process is “time-consuming.” Officials at the parliament’s printing and publication department told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday that this group of unscrupulous employees had already sold several thousand car stick-

Shahidul Islam, father-in-law of slain ward councillor Nazrul Islam, has suddenly become silent on the seven ghastly murders in Narayanganj. Shahidul earlier blamed the RAB 11 men for the abduction and murders of seven people in exchange for Tk6 corer for the first time and apparently following his allegation three RAB officials were dismissed. Since the abduction took place on April 27 he has also been blaming another Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Councillor and also Awami League leader Nur Hossain for hiring the elite force. The Rab officials dismissed from their jobs are Commanding Officer of the Rab-11 Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana. Of them, Tareque is the son-in-law of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.

Rahul skips Manmohan Singh’s official farewell dinner n Zeeshan Khan from Delhi In a spectacularly miscalculated move, Rahul Gandhi seems to have permanently put his political career to rest, and taken the venerable Congress party with him. On the eve of the election results, as the exceptionally eminent Dr Manmohan Singh amongst the eldest of the elder statesmen bids farewell to an illustrious
PM declares 30% special allowance for DGFI n Emran Hossain Shaikh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday declared 30% special allowance for all staff of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) with effect from the current month. Hasina declared the allowance at a Darbar with the DGFI men at its headquarters in the Dhaka Cantonment. While addressing the DGFI members Hasina blamed a section of non-political forces for maligning the reputation of the DGFI by using them in usurping state power. “After 2001 this forces were also used,” the premier said this while vowing that her party would never use the DGFI to go to power or cling to power. She asked the DGFI men to get ready round the clock to help continue the democratic process and protect the constitution of the country amid all sorts of threat. “You have to keep yourselves always ready to protect the sovereignty of the country,” she said. 30-year career, ten of which has been at the helm of the country, Rahul Gandhi, Congress vice-president, has chosen to skip a dinner hosted by his mother, Sonia Gandhi, on behalf of the party. It probably does not get more intimate than that, but the man who-presumes-he-wouldbe-king, is nowhere to be found. At the time this report was filed the Indian media was abuzz about the blatant disrespect and irresponsibility
that Rahul Gandhi has displayed by not paying his respects to his leader, his elder and an honourable man in the best of Indian traditions. If Gandhi needed Indians to feel even less connected to him, he has done his very best, and turned himself into the most alien of creatures, unfamiliar even with the most basic duties and courtesies of Indian cultural, social and public life.
