His name has taken the centre stage for his alleged involvement in the abduction and murder of those seven people and wielding immense political and muscle power but has so far remained untouched. The man is none other than Nur Hossain, 50, whose rags-to-riches story is now being widely discussed in Narayanganj. Formal charges against Jamaat-e-Islami for committing war crimes as a political party are likely to be submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal at the end of this month, a move that will fulfil the long-cherished desire of the country’s pro-liberation people. A seven-member prosecution team has almost finalised the formal charges with at least five charges to be filed against the party that had opposed the 1971 Liberation War and had been involved in committing crimes against humanity in collaboration with the Pakistani occupation forces. The possible charges are committing war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity, violation of Geneva Convention 1949 and other international laws. The prosecution may seek five types of punishment against the party including declaring it a criminal organisation, imposing a ban on the party and its student body Islami Chhatra Shibir, realising compensation, and slapping fines. On March 25, Investigation Officer Md Matiur Rahman handed over a 373page probe report to the prosecution team. Chief Prosecutor of the tribunal Md Golam Arif Tipoo formed a committee led by prosecutor Tureen Afroz. Asked why they had taken almost two months to prepare the charges, Tureen said they had to solve some issues first. “We are dealing with this type of

The detective could name four of the aides – Abdul Baten, Jalal, Idris Ali and Arif. He said Nazrul’s associates claimed to have charged that person in the courtroom, who had beard and was wearing a punjabi and a turban. Frisking him they felt a firearm on him. Nazrul’s men handed him over to the court police, to whom the man whispered something and the police

released him, the four aides of Nazrul told the investigators yesterday. When they demanded why the person had been released, the court police told them that he was a RAB personnel. Nazrul’s men verified this with the other RAB members present on the court premises. In a late night development, the former Commanding Officer of RAB 11 Lt Col Tarek Sayeed and two other officers – a Major and a Lieutenant - have been sent to forced retirement (pre-matured retirement), sources said. The decision was made following a meeting when the Army Chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan met with the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban, sources confirmed the Dhaka Tribune. Allegations were raised against these army officers for their involvement in the abduction and murders of seven in Narayanganj. Tarek Sayeed is the son-in-law of Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4

In most cases, horrendous murders are committed as a result of fight between families having longstanding involvement in politics. The local administration very often feels like being hostage to the political clouts of those leaders and their local thugs.
