Taskforce to track militant financing Government admits success has not been remarkable n Rabiul Islam The government has initiated a move to constitute a taskforce to intensify and coordinate its activities in tracking the financial sources of militant outfits. Officials at the home ministry said a draft for a proposed taskforce has been prepared. Following the approval of the state minister for home affairs and senior secretary of the home ministry, the draft would be sent to the Cabinet Division for the final approval of the Prime Minister. On April 10, a letter signed by Cabinet Division Assistant Secretary Joynal Abedin was sent to the home ministry on the taskforce formation. According to the draft, the taskforce will be headed by a senior minister and have around 20 members. The taskforce includes the finance minister, the information minister, the religious affairs minister and a number of top-level bureaucrats. The taskforce would work to track the financial sources of militant organisations and find out those responsible.

It would also recommend actions to be taken against those who finance militant activities. Following the incident of snatching three militants at Trishal in Mymensingh on February 23 this year and many other incidents in the past, the government initiated the move to locate the source of finance of militant organisations. On February 27, during a meeting of cabinet committee on law and order, Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandker made the proposal to constitute a taskforce to find out the sources of militant financings. “I cannot comment [on the issue] right now as the draft is yet to come to me,” State Minister for Home Assaduzzaman Khan told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday. “We have identified and arrested the planners and financers of the snatching of militants in Mymensingh,” he said. However, Criminal Investigation Department Additional Deputy Inspector General Md Shah Alam said: “We have worked on terrorist and militant  PAGE 2 COLUMN 6

13 YEARS OF RAMNA BLASTS

Murder case verdict in fresh legal tangles n Md Sanaul Islam Tipu With the 13-year old murder case filed in connection with the Ramna Botomul bomb blasts getting trapped in a fresh legal tangle, the wait for a verdict may get longer. The trial proceedings in the case were almost complete as both prosecution and defence were done with placing arguments after the last of the 67 witnesses finished testifying before the court earlier this year.

However, on March 25, the prosecution filed a petition with the trial court requesting recall of CID Inspector Abu Hena Md Yusuf, investigation officer of the murder case. According to prosecution, the recall was needed because one of the sketch maps prepared by Yusuf was “mistakenly” not included with the documents submitted to the court. However, after the court issued an order allowing the recall, a defence  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4

Indian national Atanu Datta has been arrested again, this time by the police, for his alleged connection with gambling during the T20 World Cup.
