The Beautiful Bride Queen | Tanzeel Abdullah

Organised by Red Beauty Salon, a bridal fashion photography exhibition titled “VLCC Presents the Beautiful Bride” was recently held in Dhanmondi. Facilitated by fitness and beauty chain VLCC and fashion house Mantra, the exhibition was curated by Amitav Deori. The photos on display were compiled into an exclusive photo album designed by Sabyasachi Hazra.

After being dumped by her fiancé, Rani chooses the unusual path of going on her honeymoon all by herself. While her primary motivation is to discover the sights and beauty of Paris and Amsterdam, she ends up discovering much more. While the story is neither ground-breaking nor eye-opening, Queen compensates through subtle humor that will bring a smile to your face long after the film is over. Kangana is exceptional as the protagonist and it’s hard to imagine that this is the same girl who played a self destructive model in another film. The film also has a myriad of memorable supporting characters who all stand out despite Kangana’s majestic presence. The film doesn’t preach about anything in a single scene and yet it leaves you with a lasting impression. Life is definitely better if you embrace the unknown.

So go for it. This Queen will definitely rock you.

This week as you embrace the beauty and bounty of Baishakh, add some floral fun to your ensemble. With up-dos and buns being all the rage this spring, why not spruce up your hair with the romantic flourish of a floral headpiece? Whether it’s luscious soft waves or a braided bun (check out our Tempt page for a bun DIY), these floral crowns look above and beyond beautiful. Read on to find out our easy guide on how to make your own floral wreath

3 You’ll need: • 10 gauge of floral wire (any pliable wire, available at hardware stores or lace stores) • Pliers • 3 gauge of 2cm thick plain green ribbon • Several flowers of your choice (real or plastic)

Take your floral wire and wind it around the top of your head or around your bun, depending on where you want to place the floral crown. Use pliers to make a circle that snugly fits around your head or your bun, while remaining easy to take on and off. As the wire is very thin, once you have found your fit, triple the amount of wire and wrap it around to make it strong enough to hold your floral accessories.

Cut a piece of flower and place it in your desired direction on the wire base.

From your remaining wire cut out a four inch piece. Use that piece to wrap it around the stem of your flower, attaching it to the wire base.

Continue step two, but layer the flowers according to size.

You may layer them on top and side by side till you have a well-rounded headpiece.

Keep adding flowers or leaves till you are sure there are no empty spaces peeking out. If there are any, wrap the exposed area with the green ribbon. To ensure that the ribbon doesn’t come loose, take a small 3-inch wire and wrap it around the extended edges of the ribbon.

Nothing but net | Mahmood Hossain Not too many people know about the differences between a laptop and a netbook. If you refer to a netbook as a laptop, you’re not too far off. It’s the most light-weight version of a laptop. It’s also economical, saves plenty of energy and is more suited for wireless communication and Internet access. It’s one step above a tablet.

There are, however, a few advantages and disadvantages of a netbook. If you’re trying to invest in one, it’s wise to look over this short list before you make a decision.

Advantages:

• Its small size is the main attraction. It’s ultraportable from a range of 7-inch devices to 10inch ones.

• The small size ultimately means there is an incredibly light feel.

Holding a netbook is much lighter and more comfortable than holding a full-sized laptop.

• It’s more affordable than the larger siblings. Think about it, high-end netbooks cost just as much as a low-range laptop.

Disadvantages:

• Small means small, there’s no way around that little fact. This means you won’t be able to enjoy media files as you would on a larger display.

• It has a less powerful processor.

In such a small device it’s difficult to have a powerful processor.

Multitasking will become difficult with a slower processor and less memory. It may be enough for simple tasks but don’t expect to use a netbook as you would with a desktop or laptop.

Cloak is a very unique iPhone app that will detect certain individuals and alert you of their locations. The service is hooked to both Instagram and Foursquare – apps that have a location based function.

The app creators are marketing it as the “anti-social network.” We now live in a world where privacy becomes a nagging issue. The essence of Cloak gives you the opportunity to take advantage of the privacy you already have. It doesn’t necessarily mean that there are people you hate, rather there are certain people you

would steer clear of based on your mood or availability. However, like all apps there are certain drawbacks.

Cloak can only track those who have Instagram or Foursquare. This means you can’t avoid every single person in your life.

With all jokes aside, this is one of a kind and could possibly start a new trend as an anti-social networking app. Cloak is available to download for free in the App Store.

The Walton Walpad 8 is worth mentioning and shouldn’t be dismissed because of its “inferior” make. You would be pleasantly surprised of what this tablet has to offer.

The Walpad 8 actually looks like a larger version of one of their high-spec smartphones. It’s simple in design with all the minimal accents, following the market standard. In fact, it may look a bit too simple with no signature characteristics, apart from the logo on the back of the device. Then again, for the price one would be paying would do it justice. It could be ideal for many users who are trying to keep prying eyes at bay.

2013 Toyota Prius Hybrid

It is certainly great on gas but is it as stellar all-rounder as its sales success around the globe suggests?

The 2013 Toyota Prius is an excellent fuel-efficient car in a stylish sport-back exterior and spacious interior. It gives you a smooth ride and the efficient fuel consumption, which make it a better vehicle than most of the other sport-backs out there.

Exterior

This venture of the Toyota Prius sports-back is good and has unique looks. There are subtle changes made to this model as compared to the older version. It has a shorter and slimmer bonnet than before that defines its athletic look. The bonnet falls directly into the front bumper and does not have any front grille. The headlamps are sparkling brilliant and attached to the sides of the bonnet and end exactly where the bonnet ends. The bold curves and lines characterise its body flowing towards the back of the car. The sporty back and rear taillights blend together to give it an impressive look.

Interior

The interior of the Prius is roomy and quite stylish. The materials used are primarily plastic-fibre, to keep its weight low to give impressive fuel mileage, but yet somehow Toyota managed to make it look gorgeous. The seats and the steering wheel are covered with leather to complement the plastic used, entirely giving it the premium feel. The steering wheel has audio, Bluetooth and navigation screen controls to give easy accessibility to the driver. The seats are quite comfortable and luxurious. The cargo space in the back is obviously more than that of a hatchback but slightly less than a sedan. However the backseats can be folded to make it an ultimate cargo carrier.

Performance

The Toyota Prius is equipped with a 1.8-litre, four cylinder hybrid engine that comes paired with an electric motor and generators, which store electrical energy and power it up with a specialised continuously variable transmission (CVT). It can accelerate from 0 to

100km/h in 10.1 seconds. Toyota claims that it would do 13km/l in the city and 17km/l on the highway.

Safety

The 2013 Toyota Prius is available with an anti-lock disc brake system and traction control system. It also has a stability control system that keeps the car in control on the road, even at high speeds. The Prius comes with front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag which keep the passengers safe in case of any violent jerk or accident. There is an optional pre-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system available as well.

So long as this remains the reality, one could argue that the Prius is as good as it needs to be.

Unless a competing automaker produces a vehicle as efficient and more rewarding to drive and cooler looking, the Prius will remain the runaway winner in the highefficiency race.

AUTO CORRECT

How often should you rotate your tires?

A good time to rotate your tires would be when you get the oil changed, assuming you do that at least once a year. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that the tires be rotated on the same schedule as oil changes.

In most cases that means every 5,000 kilometres or six months.

The tires mounted on the drive wheels of any vehicle perform extra duty because they apply the power to the pavement. On front-wheeldrive vehicles that is amplified

by the weight of the engine and transmission, the front tires do most of the work in turns. Rotating the tires between front and rear a couple of times a year spreads out the burden so they wear evenly.

Automakers that offer all-wheel-drive vehicles also recommend rotating tires.

Be it Pohela Boishaikh, Falgun, Valentine’s Day or any other festival, the people in Dhaka do not differentiate when it comes to creating a flea market on each and every road in the city. These days, a lot of people feel terrified to get out of their homes to meet their family and friends on festive days due to the fear of traffic jams. Agreed that we anticipate the roads to be crowded on public holidays but it makes no sense when one has to wait for more than an hour on a rickshaw or a car to pass through a street which on regular days takes 10 minutes.

One can pinpoint various reasons for this inconvenience.

The younger generation is mostly inconsiderate. Most of them do not realise that while they are flaunting their new outfits and walking in the middle of the streets like show-stoppers, the traffic comes to a standstill. They might not receive applauses from the audience but the honking from the cars to make them move from the main road only elevates sound pollution.

Everyone is in a mad rush to move from one point to another.

They tend to not abide by any traffic rules and regulations (YES, traffic rules and regulations do exist in Bangladesh), they also completely forget that not every car can move through the road simultaneously. The chariots, tents constructed in the middle of the road and food stalls scattered everywhere further contribute to the road misery.

Oh and before we forget - the sudden outburst of fights between rickshaw pullers and other drivers which onlookers make no attempt to stop, does not help in making the situation any better.

Dear Agony Aunt, I have been married for eight months now to a woman I love. Even before our marriage, my father-in-law has been very distant with me. While he remains cordial and courteous, we’ve never had that father-son bonding between us. This has never bothered me; in fact, this is a welcome relief for me. However, my wife has taken it upon herself to make sure that we “bond.” I’ve tried to go out of my way to be warm with him but he’s like a wall and I really don’t have the energy to waste time after a lost cause. It is clear that it’s a very important thing to your wife and this is something you must take into consideration. Most fights in marriages are about not understanding what is important to the spouse. Do you have to do what the spouse wants? Not really, but what is vital is to make your spouse feel that you understand her pain or discomfort. She may misunderstand her father’s behaviour as a disapproval of her choice, therefore she feels insecure. Tell her you understand her discomfort in this situation and to give time to her father to get to know you better. Meanwhile, just be yourself with him; if you like being yourself around him and feel comfortable in your skin, he will warm up to you. If not, your father-in-law will be the loser.

The six kinds of house guests you need to steer clear of Who doesn’t love company? We all enjoy hosting guests over lunch or dinner but there are certain house guests that are best kept at arm’s length.

The Slob - The kind of guests who have a poor sense of cleanliness, randomly pick their noses or lack table manners.

The Lingerer – The guest who, for one reason or another, overstay their welcome.

The Ill-timer – These guests have no sense of timing; they just show up at your doorstep unannounced while you are preparing a romantic candlelit dinner for two.

The Nosy Parker - Guests who interfere and pass on their unwanted opinions ad nauseam, on matters that don’t involve them, as if your life would come to a standstill without their assistance.

The Hogger - The one who just comes in and hogs your computer desk or the TV couch, randomly browsing through channels while you were in the middle of your favourite TV show’s cliffhanger.

The Gobbler – This type of guests will wipe your refrigerator clean as if it is their own and as though they have been starving for the last six months.

Well the good news is putting up with these guests is not obligatory. To deal with annoying house guests, the first and the most important thing for you to do is to set some ground rules when you have these guests over. Politely put it on the table that everybody cleans up their own mess and do their own dishes. Next, set up a password for your computer; you don’t want them snooping around in your work or personal files. As for the ones who show up uninvited, tell them you’re usually on a busy schedule and would like a heads up before they pay you a visit. If all else fails, just avoid them altogether. Instead of having your sanity compromised, just do with friends and family you get along with better.

Seven hacks to make moving house a breeze | Sabrina Fatma Ahmad There are a few things as stressful overall as moving house. Here are a few tips to make the chaos more manageable

Pack an overnight bag –

Let’s face it. You’re not going to unpack your house in one night.

Keep a bag with all the stuff you’ll need to get through the night, like toothbrush, underwear, a change of clothes, phone charger, etc. You’ll feel more relaxed about setting up your new pad.

Before you unplug your television or computer, take a photo of the wires at the back - This way, when you

have to set it up again at your new place, you’ll know what goes where.

Talk to your telephone operator, ISP, etc., a week before you’re officially moved in -That way you’re more

likely to have phone and internet set up as soon as you reach.

Don’t do any groceries a week before the move - It’ll

be easier to clean out the fridge.

Label your boxes – Mention

what’s going in each and what room they’re intended for. Packing room-wise will make unpacking that much easier. For even easier unpacking, use coloured tape to colour code your boxes, so you’ll know at a glance which room to stack each box in.

Get mileage out of your packing – Pack your

breakables (dishes, glassware, etc.) in clean clothes you won’t immediately use. This will save you from buying extra styrofoam or bubble wrap, and you get both clothes and breakables packed in one go. Also, socks are great for packing stemware and glasses.

I presume you are suffering from insulin dependent diabetes and are taking insulin injections to keep it under control. If diabetes is reasonably well-controlled, you could be as normal as any other girl your age.

I am suffering from bleeding gums for the last three years.

Every time I brush, my teeth begins to bleed. I use a toothpaste of a good brand. I consulted my dentist and he advised me to gargle with a mouthwash. But since they offered no result I stopped using them. Nothing has worked for me; kindly suggest what I should do to stop the bleeding.

Cleaning of teeth by scaling should be done at least once a year, because dental plaque or stones on the gum line and inter dental space is a common cause of bleeding gums. Vitamin-C deficiency or scurvy is another known cause of bleeding gums.

You can chew 3-6 Vitamin-C tablets (in two doses; 1½-3 tablets per dose) on a daily basis over a period of 2 weeks. If bleeding still persists, then the situation has to be reevaluated. In some rare instances, hormonal imbalance or certain drugs can also cause bleeding gums.

The best way to keep migraines at bay is to keep yourself as calm and relaxed as possible.

If you can anticipate a stressful scenario, try practising methods to help you cope with it.

Work out and follow a healthy diet

Follow a diet and an exercise plan that suits you best so that you can be consistent with your routine. It’s advisable to exercise three times a week for at least 20 minutes each time. If you have a desk job that requires you to be seated for long hours, take short breaks to get up and stretch. Again, try relaxation exercises to de-stress your neck and shoulders. As for your diet, routine is key as you must eat your meals and snacks at the same time every day.

Track your headache triggers

To really manage a headache, it’s a good idea to maintain a diary where you can track the migraine triggers. This way you can avoid these triggers and keep migraines at bay. As for women who get migraines around their menstrual period, they may try preventive theory when approaching their period.

The Bangali Talking Tom page has 70,000 plus followers on Facebook, and the videos are equally popular on YouTube. However, we want to know the man behind Talking Tom. Sow tell us a bit about your childhood?

I was known as the “devil kid” since childhood. Since my mother is Iranian, I used to split my days between Bangladesh and Iran. Growing up in mixed cultures, it was a bit hard for me to make friends, so I didn’t have many at school. I earned my nickname from throwing paper balls at my teachers, bunking classes and pranking teachers in other classes.

I was a good student, though, but as I grew older, education became less of a priority.

I took two years off to live abroad, before I came back and privately completed my O and A levels. I took another sabbatical before I

enrolling into a BBA programme.

I always felt there was something more than this, and wanted to do something to serve this country in a good way. After a few semesters, I decided music is the right thing for me. So I went to Malaysia and studied music. Most of the big changes in my life came during my stay in Malaysia.

You are really passionate about music, so where did the music bug come from?

My father is a doctor by profession, but an able tabla player during leisure, a fact that I discovered rather randomly, when I used the Eid money I received in 1997 to buy myself a few instruments. My brother is an amazing guitarist, although he is a pilot by profession.

I guess the music bug, like diabetes, is genetic. I went for the drums, even formed a band of my own, released a song, played with a few other bands. I then got myself a piano in 2009 and taught myself to play and compose, before eventually going abroad to study music.

So how did the idea of the Bangali Talking Tom videos come up?

As many know, the original Talking Tom app is a free Android app,

the conversation a couple might have. Nothing was scripted; it was all for fun, and it made me laugh.

I shared the recording with Maya Almuqtadir, who encouraged me to create a Facebook page and share the videos there.

I started with the couple dialogue, but as the videos became more popular, I added more characters, which I voiced by myself. People often find it incredible that I do all the voices, and ask me to do it without the aid of the app. So yeah that’s how it all started.

Though most readers know about the Bangali Talking Tom video, for those who don’t, can you explain it for them?

Well I created this for entertainment. I focus on everyday interactions and scenarios between characters we all encounter, and try to create funny conversation, all in the hopes of making people laugh. My purpose is to spread happiness everywhere; I really can’t stand seeing anyone being sad or depressed.

Did you think that the video would become so popular? How does it feel now that everyone talks about it or shares Bangla Talking video on Facebook etc?

Honestly I never thought that this will become so popular. I was in Malaysia, unaware of the effect it had. The first time I realised its reach was when I came to Bangladesh and saw two friends laughing over one of my videos at the airport. I found that amusing, since I dont use my photo or name in the video, so those two didn’t realise I had made them.

During my Dhaka visit I realised that all the videos I made became so popular that people actually download them from my fanpage and share them on their mobiles.

I began to receive more requests.

Non-speakers of the language often ask for subtitles to help them understand what was being said.

The videos are being downloaded and sold in CD stores. I felt really proud that at least I’m able to give people a bit of happiness amidst their daily life hassle. I never really profited from the venture, but since the purpose is to spread happiness, I enjoyed all the hype for The Bangali Talking Tom. I really can’t explain in words how much love and respect I get from people for this.

She didn’t have any idea about the Talking Tom app, until she heard my videos on Facebook, now she has downloaded the app and her 7 year old kid is doing much better. I can thank myself that a mother is happy seeing her kid laughing, so I truly believe that changes can be brought even with a small thing.

You seem to be an advocate of having fun and living happy.

You are a music composer and a musician. Can you shed light on these aspects of your career?

Being a music composer is enjoyable. I had been composing my own songs and planning an album, but then began to receive offers to do background scores for telefilms, movies and radio jingles.

So I put a halt on my personal project, and got busy with these projects. Recently I worked for Mostafa Sarwar Farooki’s film “Piprabidya”, and Imraul Rafat’s “Opekkha” did the background scoring for both films, and will release some of the other projects soon.

You seem to be an advocate of having fun and living happy.

However, one’s way of having fun might offend another. So where do you think one should draw the line in such a scenario?

Well if we are saying to have fun it won’t offend someone else unless you get personal, if we sound neutral and nothing to do with someone’s personal life it’s all okay.

Every day I make so much fun of people but they seem to enjoy it, because I stay within limits by not getting personal. Then again in the world of 600 billion population we can’t please every single person.

There will always be people in a serious mood with no fun in life and people in a fun mood taking serious stuff in a funny way as well.

Do you ever fear that you will be slotted as the creator of The Bangali Talking Tom video and your talent as a musician and a composer will take a back seat?

Honestly no, but it did have an effect on my music. For almost a year I was detached from music because of The Bengali Talking Tom. My first priority is other’s happiness, so when I see so many people laughing watching the videos, I really didn’t notice that I was diverting from music to a comedy, which isn’t my goal. Now I make a video once a month and focus more on my music.

The easiest way to transition into mixed prints is by trying stripes on stripes. You could either pair a wide vertical striped shirt with a pinstriped pair of pants or have a kurti or shirt dress with vertical stripes on the body and horizontal stripes on the collar and cuffs. What we tend to forget are all the style fouls that go on at an alarming rate during significant times of the year. Pohela Baishakh is a day of a colourful, festive beginning. To bring in the fresh start, here are some absolute “don’ts” when wearing a panjabi.

Tone it down

Listen Liberace, we all appreciate a little splash of colours but never drown yourself in it. For the love of the fashion gods, stay away from the shiny and glittering details on panjabis. It’s a complete

eyesore and very unattractive.

Colours the right way

Just because your friends are wearing bright pink doesn’t mean you can pull it off as well. First of all, stay away from bright anything.

Keep your skin tone in mind. It doesn’t matter if you’re light skinned or dark skinned, embrace your skin colour and put on colours that will flatter you.

Too tight ain’t alright

You know Salman Khan, right? Yeah, there’s only one of him to go around.

Men, if you have a pudgy tummy or a not so attractive figure, do not wear tight-fitting tops. Biceps are fantastic and all but no one wants a drum to beat on.

The entire idea is to keep things light and wear fitted clothing.

While dining out, I have always struggled with how much tip I should leave once I get the bill. My friend leaves less than 15%, stating that anything is better than nothing.

How much should I be tipping?

It’s safe to say your friend is a cheapskate. It all really depends on the service. What most people don’t know is that you are paying for the entire service. If your waiter or service is decent, you should always leave 15% of the tab. If it’s exceptional, leave 20%. You can consider yourself fortunate when you see that the bill includes the service charge.

And on rare cases, you will find restaurants that completely forbid waiters from taking tips.

Even if you insist, they will politely decline. Keep a good tipping habit and don’t forget to send your compliments to the chef. That’s if the food is worth the praise.

Forget the fragrance, you’re going to want to keep the most heated areas of your body cool and fresh. Look for function, not fashion.

My friends and I indulged in “rong khela” during last year’s Baishakhi festivities and I had a miserable experience trying to get the colours off my skin.

Any tips on how I can make it easier on myself this year?

Playing with colours is indeed a very festive way to celebrate the Bengali New Year. While natural dyes are easier to remove from your skin and hair, the synthetic version can be a real pain.

Prepare yourself by applying a medium to thick layer of moisturiser or even petroleum jelly on your face and body. Yes, it’s going to be hot out there and this may not feel very pleasant but the layer of grease on you will help the dyes slide right off you in the shower. You can also try “amchur,” a powder made from dried green mangos. Used as a scrub by people after Holi, this can help get any remaining dye off your skin.

Lastly, all this scrubbing and the dyes themselves can leave your skin dry and uncomfortable. Load up on lotion post shower to help restore the skin’s natural balance.

This old school style is easy to do and uber glamorous. Section your hair horizontally into two parts: your upper part and your lower part. While you separate the upper part, leave at least an inch and a half section of hair above both your ears. Begin by teasing the upper half section of your hair. Pull it back and pin it up into a half up-do using bobby pins.

Make two regular braids with the two sections you left above your ears.

Each braid should cross each other as they go above the pinned section of your hair, pinning the end of the left braid on top of the right ear and the right braid on top of the left one.

Section the rest of your hair into four equally parted vertical columns. Take the end of each section and roll it outwards using both your index and middle fingers. Keep rolling it till you

into the shape of a doughnut. Using a regular hairband, make a really high ponytail on top of your crown.

Using both hands, pull all your hair upwards, vertically holding on to the edge of the ponytail. Hold your sock on the edge of your pulled up hair, and pull your hair through it by an inch or so. Start rolling your hair around the sock using your thumb and index fingers. Keep rolling all your hair inwards, rolling all the way down to the base of your ponytail.

Secure lose ends with bobby pins.

Tie your hair into a low, loose ponytail. Then use your fingers to split your tied hair into two to make a loop, right an inch behind your hairband. Take the ends of your ponytail, flip and pull them through the open loop you have just made.

Continue doing so until you have all the hair in a rolled up bun. Use bobby pins to secure loose ends.

Dressed in red and white, men and women from all walks of life come together to welcome the new year. Avenue T lists down seven other similar festivals from the neighbouring countries that are celebrated with grace and joy every year

Vishu

This festival is celebrated in the state of Kerala during the second week of April. Known as the festival of lights, firecrackers are an integral part of the celebration. The most important event observed during this festival is the Vishukkani – an arrangement of articles which in local culture signifies prosperity.

Buying of new clothes and elders giving money to children is a common feature of this festival.

Vaisakhi

This festival is observed in the Punjab region mainly by the Sikh community in the month of April. The day holds great significance for the Sikhs as their 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh laid the foundation of the Panth Khalsa on this very day in 1699.

Bohag Bihu

Celebrated in the state of Assam during the month of April, this festival promotes diversity.

People from various strata of the society come together on this day regardless of their social status. The festival celebrates the Assamese New Year and the sowing season of rice.

Puthandu

Tamils all over India, Srilanka, Malaysia, Mauritius and Singapore celebrate this day as the first day of the Tamil New Year. A huge feast at their homes is arranged and the entrance of the houses is decorated with Kolams (a form of painting drawn using rice).

In India, car festivals are held in various regions on this day.

Vishuva Sankranti

The Oriya people consider this to be the first day of their New Year. Sattu flour is consumed with banana and curd by the people of Odisha. They make offerings to the Gods and Goddesses in their temples. Bel Pana (fruit pulp) is consumed in huge quantity on the occasion.

Aluth Avurudda

This festival is observed by the people of Sri Lanka as the Sinhalese New Year. Cleaning of houses and lighting of oil lamps are commonly observed during this festival. Kavum and Kokis are the traditional food eaten during this period.

Navreh

This is observed in the Kashmir region of India by the Kashmiri Pandits in the month of March. People feast on traditional meals consisting of walnuts, curd, etc. They then visit gardens and prepare a traditional tea known as Kahwa Tea.

Baishakh is the first month of the Bengali year. Bengali people from across the board celebrate this month with a variety of occasions from hamlets to city centres. Festivals and food are synonymous! At the dawn of Pohela Baishakh, people feast on mouth-watering traditional Bengali hot, sweet and sour dishes. Amongst them, Khichuri made of aromatic rice, colourful pulses with a lot of spices and hilsha fish with creamy mustard gravy are very popular

Khichuri Serves: 6

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • •

3 cups basmati or chinigura rice 1 cup moong dal/split 1 cup masoor dal 8tbsp ghee or 8tbsp soybean oil 2 cups sliced onions 2tbsp finely chopped garlic 2tbsp finely chopped ginger 2tsp turmeric powder 1tsp red chilli powder 8pcs whole green chilli 1tsp cumin seeds Salt according to taste 2l hot water

Preparation

• Wash both the rice and dal together several times in water and drain well.

• Heat the ghee or oil in a hari or a deep saucepan.

• Fizz the cumin with the onions.

• Now add both the rice and dal.

• Stir vigorously.

Mustard Hilsha • Add the turmeric and red chilli powder and stir to combine well.

• Add chopped garlic and ginger.

• Fry for a couple of minutes.

• Add 2 litres of water.

• Season with salt and stir occasionally.

• When the level of water touches the level of rice in the hari/pan, put the lid on.

• Keep the flame at simmering point for 15 minutes.

• Take the lid off and stir well.

• Add green chillies and put the lid back on for 10 more minutes.

Serves: 6

Sprinkle toasted onions on top and serve the khichuri hot with mustard hilsha.

• Wash the fish carefully with water.

• Make a paste of the mustard with a pinch of salt.

• Heat mustard oil into a korai or wok.

• Make the gravy with mustard, onions and cumin paste.

• Add turmeric and red chilli powder to the paste.

6pcs of thick-sliced hilsha fish 3tbsp red mustard paste 6pcs green chillies 1 ½tsp turmeric powder 1tsp red chilli powder ½tsp cumin paste 2tbsp onion paste 4tbsp mustard oil Salt to taste 1 cup warm water

Preparation

• Stir carefully to make a smooth gravy.

• Season the gravy with salt.

• Add water to the gravy and bring to the boil.

• Place the pieces of the fish into the gravy and put the lid on.

• Cook over medium heat for 20 minutes.

• Sprinkle the green chillies over the fish.

• Cook the fish over simmering heat for another 10 minutes.

• Turn off the heat when oil separates and appears on the surface.

Now the hilsha fish is ready to serve. Serve the mustard hilsha with khichuri!

Phase 3 Launching After successful completion of the two phases from 2002-2013, Agribusiness for Trade Competitive Project (ATCP) branded as Katalyst has started its third phase on March 1, 2014.

In this regard, a launching reception was organised in the Lakeshore hotel on March 20.

The general manager of Katalyst Markus Ehmann in his welcome speech addressed stated Katalyst’s ambitious target for the third phase, which is to benefit 1.43 million farmers and small and medium enterprises and increase their income by USD263 million.

DFID believes that Katalyst will be successful in delivering its target with effective support from private sector and government of Bangladesh.

Ad-Guru Competition 2014 held at

United International University Marketing Forum (UIUMF), the marketing wing of United International University Career Counseling Center (CCC) had recently organised their biggest intra-university ad-making event titled “Ad-Guru Competition-2014” on April 1 and 2, 2014 at UIU auditorium.

The competition was on making television commercials (TVC) and print vision commercials (PVC).
