Biman tries to navigate out of losing streak With Tk118 crore loss estimated for 201314, MD expects profits by next year

Dhaka Tribune April 4, 2014
Although Biman is yet to climb out of years of suffering losses, the national flag carrier is expected to reduce its annual losses by 38.86% from the previous year as a result of improved punctuality and enhanced customer service. Officials at the Biman Bangladesh Airlines said the carrier would be able to overcome the massive losses suffered during the months of political unrest ahead of January’s parliamentary polls, and end the fiscal year with an estimated loss of Tk118 crore, much lower than the previous fiscal losses of Tk193 crore. Claiming that the national flag carrier was offering better services than ever before, Biman officials however
added that the airlines was suffering major setbacks because of declining traffic of Middle East-bound labourers and expatriate passengers. “In spite of all the problems with political unrest and losses in November and December 2013, Biman still expects to make its [improved] loss target for 2013-14, and be fully profitable in 201415,” Biman’s Managing Director Kevin Steele told the Dhaka Tribune recently. He credited the upward trends to the successes achieved in “punctuality and customer services and product enhancements.” Meanwhile, statistics show that the national flag carrier experienced an 18.49% drop in passenger numbers and 18.59% losses in gross revenue during the first eight months (July-February) PAGE 2 COLUMN 6

Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni celebrate India’s win over South Africa in yesterday’s T20 World Cup semifinal at the SBNS
MUMIT M
Kohli powers India to sub-continental World Cup T20 final n Mazhar Uddin India rode on the charismatic Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 72 to cruise to the final in the World Twenty20, beating South Africa by six wickets in the second semi-final at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday. India had the upper hand and was on top of the game in most of the situation with South Africa always trying to crawl back and win to end their drought of reaching a major tournament final. However, the day was a gloomy one for South Africa as both their men’s and women’s team tasted defeat in the semi-final of their respective World T20 tournaments. The intent from the Indian openers chasing 173 was clear as Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane hit three fours in the first over bowled by JP Duminy to put on 14 runs followed by nine and 10 off the next two overs by Albie Morkel
and Dale Steyn respectively. Dominant off the two Rohit, who also guided Steyn for a six off upper cut, hit four fours and a six before he skied Beuran Hendricks’ fifth ball in the fourth over to mid-on on 24 off 13 balls.
The man in form, Kohli joined Rahane and kept the required run rate under nine. Their brisk partnership of 38 was broken after Rahane (32) was dismissed by left-arm fast bowler Wayne Parnell with India needing 95 from the last 10 overs. The dismissal, however, had no effect on Kohli who went all guns blazing with Yuvraj Singh at the other end. The
duo added 56 in 6.3 overs with Kohli already reaching his third 50 in the tournament, indicating the finisher’s intent. Yuvraj left on 18 as the game looked to go right down the wire with 40 off 24 balls required for the former champions. Incoming batsman Suresh Raina eased the pressure off Kohli’s shoulders as the left-handed hammered Parnell for 16 in the 17th over. Though his 10-ball 21 ended in the penultimate over, Raina’s cameo had already ensured India were ahead in calculations for the first time needing five off just nine balls. Kohli maintained his classy feature of remaining unbeaten during an India win and sealed his side’s clash with Sri Lanka in the final by hitting a four with five balls to spare. He faced just 44 deliveries to make 72 with the help of five fours and two sixes.
Imran H Sarker said: “We strongly protest and condemn the attack. Those who called the counter-programme yesterday used it as a political party against the Moncho activists. “As we protested the government’s decision to take donation from the Islami Bank, we came under attack from the ruling party’s student wing.” Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam of Shahbagh police station said: “Police dispersed Moncho activists to avert untoward incidents. We have also detained two members of Muktijuddha Sangsad Santan Command from the spot.”
A veteran Associated Press photographer who had covered wars around the world was shot dead and another reporter was wounded yesterday when an Afghan policeman opened fire on them in eastern Afghanistan. The attack took place on the eve of a presidential election in Afghanistan that Taliban insurgents have pledged to disrupt through a campaign of bombings and assassinations. The AP said photographer Anja Niedringhaus, 48, was killed and reporter Kathy Gannon, 60, wounded while they were sitting in the back of a car. Niedringhaus, an acclaimed German photographer who had covered conflict zones including Kuwait, Iraq, Libya, Gaza and the West Bank, was killed instantly, according to an AP Television freelancer who witnessed the shooting. Canadian reporter Kathy Gannon, who is based in Islamabad and has covered war and unrest in Afghanistan for 30 years, was shot twice and was receiving medical help, the AP said. Gannon underwent surgery in the eastern city of Khost. The operation was described as successful and Gannon’s condition was stable, the AP said. “Anja and Kathy together have spent years in Afghanistan covering the conflict and the people there. Anja was a vibrant, dynamic journalist well-loved for her insightful photographs, her warm heart and joy for life. We are heartbroken at her loss,” AP Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll, speaking in New York, told the agency. The two journalists were in a remote small town on Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan when the attack took place. Taliban attacks on security forces, civilians and Westerners have been on the rise since the start of the year ahead of the vote, when Afghans will elect a successor to President Hamid Karzai,

Government bank borrowing may exceed Tk40,000cr this FY n Asif Showkat Kallol Concerns have been raised within the finance ministry that government bank borrowing might exceed Tk40,000 crore in the current fiscal year because of a shortfall of revenue earning and an increase in the revised ADP. The country fought all odds and prolonged political unrest to maintain a sound macro and fiscal economic situation during the last couple of years, but the strong position of the country
might be lost, said a senior official of the finance ministry. Seeking anonymity, the official also said local businesses and trade might face hurdles in getting commercial bank loans over the next four months because of extra government borrowing of around Tk15,000 crore. The release of three tranches of Extended Credit Facility (ECF) of International Monetary Fund might also be halted unless the government complied with a condition of bank bor-
rowing limit for the next nine months, sources said. As per the IMF condition of ECF bank borrowing limit, the government will be able to borrow Tk24,000 crore until June 30, 2014, while an additional Tk10,000 crore may be borrowed from the banking system until December. Sources said finance ministry officials tried to convince a visiting ECF review mission last week that the government would reduce the bank PAGE 2 COLUMN 3
