MICHAEL ATHERTON (Former England captain)

First-class debut for Natal as an offspinning all-rounder.

“It was coming, I think. There was a unanimity of views there from the people that count, so ultimately I think Kevin Pietersen found himself friendless. He had no allies amongst the management, the hierarchy and the senior players as well because Paul Downton would have been taking soundings from them at the end of the Ashes tour. It was a pretty horrific Ashes tour and there have been a few victims along the way, but I think he just found himself friendless and with no allies.”

2001 Joins Nottinghamshire with a view to qualifying for England, following frustrating with South Africa’s postapartheid ‘quota’ system.

ALEC STEWART (Former England captain)

In September, scores a breathtaking maiden Test hundred, making 158 to see England to a draw at The Oval that sees the Ashes regained from Australia.

2008 Replaces Michael Vaughan as Test captain and Paul Collingwood as one-day skipper, with England wanting a leader across all formats. In August, replaces Michael Vaughan as Test captain and Paul Collingwood as one-day skipper. Scores hubndred in his first Test as captain, against South Africa at The Oval.

2009 In January, resigns as England captain following a rift with Peter Moores that sees the latter lose his job as England coach.

Game over for KP ‘Rebuilding’ ECB end Pietersen’s England career

n Reuters, London Kevin Pietersen’s brilliant and controversial international career ended on Tuesday as the fallout from England’s woeful Ashes campaign claimed the scalp of one of the country’s most mercurial batting talents. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) brought the curtain down on Pietersen’s near 10-year spell at the top by leaving him out of the squad for this year’s World Twenty20 and limited overs tour of the Caribbean. Paul Downton, the managing director of England cricket, cited a need “to rebuild not only the team but also team ethic and philosophy”, effectively closing the door on a player frequently labelled a disruptive dressing-room influence. “Clearly this was a tough decision

because Kevin has been such an outstanding player for England, as the fact that he is the country’s leading run scorer in international cricket demonstrates,” Downton said. “However everyone was aware that there was a need to begin the longterm planning after the Australia tour. Therefore we have decided the time is right to look to the future and start to rebuild not only the team but also team ethic and philosophy. “England cricket owes a debt of gratitude to Kevin who has proved to be one of the most talented and exciting players to ever represent the country and his 13,797 runs are a testimony to his immense skill. “This decision brings some clarity now for the future of the England teams and we all wish Kevin the very best in the rest of his career.”

The 33-year-old South-African born Pietersen, who played in 104 test matches, 136 one-day internationals and 37 Twenty20 internationals for England, was left in little doubt that he would not grace the international stage again. “Playing cricket for my country has been an honour. Every time I pulled on the England shirt was a moment of huge pride for me and that is something that will live with me forever,” he said in the statement. “Although I am obviously very sad the incredible journey has come to an end, I’m also hugely proud of what we, as a team, have achieved over the past nine years. “I believe I have a great deal still to give as a cricketer. I will continue to play but deeply regret that it won’t be for England.” l

“At times you could call him a maverick cricketer, but he’s a match-winner, a natural born winner and a game changer. I am sure there will be many England fans who see this as a shameful decision but it’s a decision he will have to accept and we within the game of cricket have to accept. I do not know the full facts but as an England fan I’d want my best players playing for England, to give us the best chance of winning. Part of managing is not just coaching but creating a good environment and not letting these things get to a head.”

IAN BOTHAM (Former England all-rounder) “I think everyone needs to remember what a terrific player he has been and the entertainment he has given. I think it’s about time the ECB put out an official statement so we all know what is going on. There have been a lot of Chinese whispers, a lot of ex-players speculating. I don’t know what has happened. I don’t think anybody does. He is one of the best players the country has ever had. His career has been terminated. Well why not tell us why? And don’t give us the one-liner ‘we are moving on, we’re doing this, we’re doing that.’ He is 33, not 43”

DARREN GOUGH (Former England fast bowler) “What a joke leaving @KP24 out !! This is what you get when england keep employing yes men as men in charge, top player who would still be playing for any other team in world cricket EG GAYLE WEST INDIES WATSON AUSTRALIA a few examples”

CHRIS GAYLE (Former West Indies captain) “No @KP24 for the Caribbean tour later this month against W.I? That’s really sad for English/International cricket! Don’t let the fans suffer. Was really looking for the hype of having @KP24 in the caribbean, would be big tickets sales for us. #Sad Learn to MANAGE Big Names!!”

DAVID WARNER (Australia opening batsman) “I think he is (a loss to international cricket), he was their highest run-scorer, a worldclass player, but we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors and in their camp, so we can’t talk on their behalf. I know through playing with KP at Delhi (in the IPL), he likes to encourage the other guys coming through. His door’s always open if you want to ask him a question, or if you need to work out a plan for the next game.”
