Organisations defrauding them in the name of helping get compensation n Adil Sakhawat They luckily survived the building collapse but they have now fallen victims to fraudulent labour organisations and individuals who are allegedly pulling in big buck in the name of helping the victims of the Rana Plaza get compensation. These organisations and people are also cheating the victims in the name of free medical treatment, complained several victims. Neru Sarder, who worked on the 4th floor of the Rana Plaza, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Some workers’ organisations

‘It’s a complete violation of law. The OC would take action against those cheats.’ called us and told us to visit their offices. They said we would get compensation if we joined their processions and rally from time to time.” “A few days back a leader of the National Garments workers Federation called me to join a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka. I went there with a hope to get some financial help. I delivered a speech at the conference in front of many journalists and political leaders. I saw many people give that organisation money and other assistance. But I got nothing. They helped one or two victims in front of the camera.” he alleged. Misty Akhter, who used to work on the 8th floor of Rana Plaza, said people of those organisations came to

them and took their names, photos, and identity card numbers and then demanded money for including their names on the list to make them eligible for compensation. “Labour leader Sathi Akhter and Kamrul of Shadhin Bangla Garment workers Employees Federation (SBGWEF) came to me and demanded Tk150 for including my name on the compensation list. I along with other survivors gave them the money expecting to get some assistance. But we have got nothing so far.” When contacted Sathi Akhter introduced herself as the President of the SBGWEF’s Savar and Ashulia units. She confessed to taking money from the Rana Plaza victims but said: “I have taken money as membership fee to include them in our organisations. It is membership fee.” When contacted SBGWEF’s President Shamima Nasrin said: “Our organisation has no rule to charge membership fees.” Dipty Akhter and Shila Akhter of the National Garments Workers Federation, Jibon Ahmed of Garments Workers Trade Union, Babar Ali Shishir of Bangladesh Volunteer Force, Rafiqul Islam Sujan of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation, Emdadul Islam of Rana Plaza Garments Workers Union have also reportedly taken money from the victims. However, everyone denied the allegation as the Dhaka Tribune contacted them. But all of them said they were taking money in exchange for giving them membership of their organisations.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 3

Disparity in lawsuit records of upazila poll contenders n

Mohammad Al-Masum Molla

A clear disparity is becoming visible in the record of lawsuits against the Awami League and BNP leaders who are running for the upazila parishad poll the first phase of which is due in just a few days’ time. According to the affidavits that the contenders have submitted to the Election Commission and the information sent by our district correspondents, in many upazilas, the Awami Leaguebacked aspirants have clean sheets while their BNP-backed rivals have multiple cases against them. The Dhaka Tribune looked into the affidavits of at least forty upazila chairmen candidates to find out the present status of cases filed against the contenders.

While some of these cases were filed on criminal charges, the BNP have claimed that most of the cases against its grassroots leaders are politically motivated and filed during the previous term of the Awami League-led government. During its previous tenure, the government, through a specialised committee, withdrew a few thousand cases against Awami League leaders and activists with the consideration that those cases were all “politically motivated” and filed during the previous tenures of the BNP-led government. The BNP, however, have always alleged that the committee had never recommended any case against any of its leaders for withdrawal. There are exceptions to this as well. For example, in Gopalganj, known for

Police yesterday arrested a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader for his alleged involvement in the Sunday’s armed attacks on general students protesting hiked fees and evening courses in the university. Motiher police station Officer-inCharge Shamsur Noor said police, on information, arrested Chhatra League RU unit Vice-President Delwar Hossain Dils from a house in Rajshahi city’s Beripara area around 4pm. Delwar was shown arrested in four cases – two filed by the RU authorities and the other two by police, Nur also said. Delowar was sent to jail after producing before a court, the OC said. After the violence, the Rajshahi University syndicate at an emergency meeting on Sunday night declared the university closed for an indefinite period and asked all resident students to vacate the halls.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 6

being the stronghold of the Awami League, two upazilas are seeing elections in the first phase, slated for February 19. Interestingly, all the chairman contenders – both from the Awami League and BNP tents – in these two upazilas have clean sheets. On the other hand, in Khagrachari, elections will be held in six upazilas where 26 people are vying for the chairmen posts and among them criminal cases were found against six contenders. Among those six, four are affiliated with BNP and one with the Awami League and one is an independent candidate. “The BNP-led alliance government filed a false case against me and it will be disposed of shortly:” KM Alimullah,

In the 136-year history of Test cricket only 27 triple hundreds have been scored and the latest one was accomplished by Sri Lankan star Kumar Sangakkara who made a career best 319 and joined the 11,000-run club in second Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong yesterday. Left-handed Sangakkara’s maiden triple century was his ninth 200-plus knock, leaving him in second place behind Australian legend Don Bradman who had 12 scores of 200 or more. Sangakkara, a 36-year-old veteran playing in his 122nd Test match, also became the ninth Test batsmen to cross the 11,000-run mark. He now has 11,046 runs in the all-time list headed by India’s Sachin Tendulkar who retired on 15,921 runs. The 36-year-old faced 482 balls,
