Apart from the Tk30,000 price tag, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8-inch tablet is actually the brand’s best tablet out there. The 8-inch is one of the three new Galaxy Tab 3 tablets from Samsung.

It’s light, easy to handle and has a wonderfully bright screen. This makes it one of the best small tablets and it feels like a thinner version of the Note 8 without the stylus.

Even though the material hasn’t changed for Samsung (still the same plastic), the rounded edges and easy access features steer away from feeling cheap.

It’s not all about food though, this app can assist you with splitting bills at restaurants to the electricity bill with your roommates.

This app has been around for quite some time but with recent updates, it has become a solid and legitimate way to keep a personal ledger of shared expenses. You can add your friends from your address book to include them in the app, and you actually don’t need your friends to have the same app in order to use its features. However, it would be ideal if they did. It makes the transactions smoother if your friends are members of Splitwise.

Another cool thing about this app is that it does the math for you. Item by item, you can add them up to calculate the total before the actual bill shows up to the table. After all is said and done, you can have a clear picture of who owes what. It may not be a big deal for everyone but it comes in very handy for those who split bills quite often. Also, you can change the currency to your liking to make things more comfortable.

All you may need now is an app that keeps track of freeloaders and those who skip on every bill. We’re assuming you’ve made a special group under that category.

The hanger on: This one is the first to greet you when you enter and announces to the rest of the crowd that you are their best-est and oldest friend even though you just met him/her last week. Now you’re doomed to be judged by the room as that person’s friend. Not only that, the hanger on will make it a habit to invite themselves to every conversation you’re in and magically get a ride from you to and fro.

There comes a time when keeping up with your social calendar produces dissatisfied grunts rather than a gleeful smile. Not only are you about to brace never ending traffic jams, you’re also about to insert yourself into a pool of tiresome people that you keep meeting everywhere. Learn to navigate social gatherings like a pro by using this list of the five kinds of people you need to avoid.

The one upper: You’re telling someone about doing something pretty awesome that you’re proud of when suddenly you hear someone comment about how they have done it better, faster and wiser than you ever did. You might raise a hand in protest and think, “Where did you get the nerve,” but really there is no winning.

The one upper is a person who has to be better than everyone else and will constantly try and tell you tall tales about their lives. Just don’t engage them.

The social climber: These are the worst. You have no idea how this person

Between ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph where do you size up? Esha Aurora In a world full of statuesque models and photoshopped magazine images, it’s hard to look at the mirror and not have body image issues. We have all been there, from time to time analysing our features ad nauseam. We have all gone through periods of depriving ourselves of food for days in hopes of achieving the perfect body, or worse working out beyond capacity. The key is to know what kind of a body type you possess. That will make everything easier. There are three broad kinds of body types, the ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph and identifying which one is yours will infinitely benefit your workout style and diet. Read on to see where you fit and tailor your regimen accordingly. We can’t always have what we want, but we can work with what we have to be the best that we can be.

Ectomorph: They are characterised by tall, slim builds with little muscle mass and the ability to eat anything and everything and not put on any weight! This is perhaps the most ideal

kind of body and almost all super models seem to be built this way. Other characteristics include small joints, fast metabolism, small chest and derriere, low body fat and a small frame.

Mesomorph: They put on muscle by little or no workout but unfortunately they also seem to put on fat that way. Most women of this kind have an hourglass body shape. They have medium build with a stocky frame. Notable characteristics are wide shoulders with a small waist, symmetrical body, low body fat with high muscle mass and high metabolism.

Endomorph: This body type is usually the short, stocky kind and they generally hold their fat in their stomachs the most. They have difficulty burning fat and building muscles. They are mostly characterised by a large appetite, large fat accumulation, very little muscle mass, inability to lose weight and a large frame.

It’s a word that men dread hearing and it has more than four letters Mahmood Hossain There’s a simple way to avoid the dream shattering “friend zone.” There, it’s been said. Now breathe. If you have ever heard the saying, “Nice guys finish last,” it’s true. It’s a terrible fact to swallow, but it must be said. However, the heart wants what the heart wants. You end up chasing a woman you’ve desired for quite some time. She’s back on the market and you’re ready to invest in the entire company.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is being her shoulder to cry on. You’re the caring kind, you have the urge to console her. Here’s another fact, that doesn’t work. These are all acts of a good friend.

Ouch! There’s that word again. Don’t be that guy, she’s got plenty of girlfriends in her life that give her terrible advice as it is. Let them do their job. If you go against this advice, you are dangerously creeping into the “friend zone.” Cringe.

The consequences of that are clear.

The moment you make your move and ask her out she will hit you with a fury of compliments. Compliments you don’t

want to hear. As follows, “Sweetie, you are an amazing person. So caring, so loving, I love that I can be comfortable around you. You’re smart, talented, handsome, and so romantic,” here’s the kicker, “but I can’t see us together like that. You are just too good for me. Directions: Fill the brass lanterns with a handful of twinkle lights. You can roll them into a ball or sparingly decorate the insides of the lantern. You can fill them any way you like and connect to a power point. There you have it! Easy to do outdoor lighting.

Wine glass lanterns What you’ll need: Wine glass, tea candles and paper cups (available at New Market and DIT Market Gulshan-1, price ranges from Tk400 each and above).

Directions: Place lit tea candles into the wine glass. Cut out the bottom of the paper cups with a knife. Place the paper cups over the wine glass for an instant table lamp. You can place little marbles on the bottom of the wine glass for effects or use coloured paper cups that would emit vibrant shades.

Q: I’ve seen a couple of etiquette questions here. I’m relieved because I have one of my own.

I always found shaking hands with a woman in a professional and casual setting a bit awkward.

How tightly or how long should the shake last for?

A: Well, first things first, if a lady offers her hand for you to shake, then you shake it. Never reach out first, you don’t want to cross any line and make the lady uncomfortable. Regardless of who it is, male or female, shaking hands too lightly seems too weak and not genuine. You want a firm grip, but don’t squeeze. It’s like picking up a baby; learn the difference. The entire idea of shaking hands is a welcoming mat for trust between the two parties. It’s about equality, not dominance.

A. Modern toners are nothing like the harsh, alcohol infused astringents of the past. Rivers of the World

In September 2012, London celebrated the Thames festival, where Rivers of the World, an art exhibition, was a huge attraction of the event. 18 countries participated and sent in their artworks in which they drew rivers belonging their own countries. In this festival, artist Syed Rashad Imam Tanmoy and his mentor Ahsan Habib, with a team of students from six schools in Sylhet, represented Bangladesh. They chose to prepare artworks portraying the life and culture across Surma River, which is known to be the longest river in the country.

This initiative undertaken by the British Council’s Connecting Classroom project was supported by HSBC Global Education Trust and City of London Corporation. The six participating schools were Sirajuddin Ahmed Academy, Mohammad Mokan High School and College, Israb Ali High School and College, Dakshin Surma Nasiba Khatun Girls High School, MC Academy (Model school and college) and Govt Pilot High School, all situated at the banks of Surma River. The artworks are a depiction of the stories of their lives, people and culture. In December 2011, the team from British Council along with Tanmoy, conducted a series of workshops in each of the six schools where they worked on the following

four themes namely River Culture, River Pollution, Working River and Resourceful River. The open-air exhibition took place at the Rabindra Sarobor and the Dhaka Art Centre. Their artworks included a nakshi kantha sewed by the students of Bangladesh, pat-chitro (a traditional form of scroll with paintings on it), a contemporary style comic book and a decorated rickshaw hood; the students also recycled and transformed the art workshop wastages to a beautiful piece of art. They also made a map depicting the social values and cultural heritages of Bangladesh.

The art exhibitions were a huge success, which not only resulted in a healthy liaison between the two countries but also helped them explore and appreciate each other’s culture, traditions, struggles and people. After the successful events taking place in 2012, Tanmoy was yet again determined to visit London in March 2013 and organise workshops for the Connecting Classroom project.

This time around, the students in London created art pieces based on Surma River.

The children created comic strips where they tell the story of a British fish who fights the pollution in Surma, with his friends who happen to live across the river banks. They also took a keen interest in

Bangladesh’s culture and made special masks that are used during Pohela Boishakh’s Mongol Shobha Jatra. The masks represented local customs, lifestyle as well as riverside animals.

The artworks were later digitally coloured and collaborated by Syed Rashad Imam (Tanmoy) and Tamanna Tasmeem for the exhibition. Meanwhile, they and the students in Bangladesh decided to work on an illustration that required them to gather inspirations about the River Thames and its localites.

worked with their partner schools in the UK. Their focus was the river Thames.

This has helped them research and know about this British river. Similarly, the British schools’ students worked on Bangladeshi rivers to produce artworks based on the changing culture of the Surma’s riverside communities. The workshops were a very educational and enriching experience for students,” stated Afroza Yasmin, project manager for this initiative.

After their return, the workshop progressed with mindful spirit and effort from the whole team. The British Council and HSBC are launching ‘Rivers of the World’ art exhibition from January 1619 this year. It will be held at Rabindra Sarobar, Dhanmondi, Dhaka and a week later in Sylhet.

Swinging both ways I was watching while my all-time favourite TV show “Friends” where Ross finds out that his wife is into women and has been having an affair with her buddy from the gym, it made me think what if my wife is that sort as well. Hamster time (part one) If you want to adopt a pet which is lively, clean and can live unaccompanied, then the hamster is your best option Tausif Sanzum Having a hamster as a pet has a number of perks. However, there are a few things which you need to keep in mind. These tiny fur balls are fiercely territorial and having two of them in the same cage is never a good idea.

They have a comparatively short life span (approximately two years) and if you are planning to breed your hamster then think again as that might take a lot of effort. Patience is a virtue and you will be needing a lot of it to tame your hamster.

Hamsters are vulnerable to health problems. Ulcers are quite common on the skin. In case they are not too severe, applying warm water with a little epsom salt can heal them. Overgrown claws need to be clipped with clippers. You can consult your vet who can teach you to do it. When your hamster is asleep, you can make it up by cupping it in your hands while wearing woolen

gloves. Overgrown teeth should be dealt with immediately or else the hamster might stop eating. There are certain medical issues regarding which you need to get the opinion of your vet.

Red swollen eyes, damaged pouch, sore skin and wet tail need immediate medical attention.

It is always advisable not to pet your hamster immediately after getting it home as it might get defensive, eventually biting you. Leave it alone for two weeks, feed it and let it adjust to its new environment. If you want to have another hamster then place it in a cage next to your previous hamster’s living space. Let them get used to each other’s presence before placing them in the same case. In cage, they fight continuously place them at a distance from each other.

In Town Forever searching for exciting new culinary haunts in Dhaka, Istanbul seemed like just the place to go to. With an old friend in town, and a nagging, empty stomach to fill, I frantically searched the labyrinth of streets across from Agora to find the elusive Istanbul. Once we had given up on my dismal GPS skills and came to the rather obvious conclusion of calling them for directions, our ravenous appetite had gotten the better of us.

Never having taken that adventurous step of going beyond the trusted doner kebab, I was ready to embark on a gastronomic journey with Istanbul.

Upon entering Istanbul, I was welcomed by warm smiles and the smell of freshlybaked bread. The intricate murals on the walls, the decorated ceiling, the glass walls and the upholstered seats left me awed by the effort they put into decorating the place. Settling into my seat, my eagerto-please waiter brought my attention to a neatly-typed placeholder that said ‘Reserved for Ms Anita.’ Their hospitality and genuine warmth certainly surpassed my expectations.

With one look at the stunning array of kebabs, appetisers and salads on their menu - our restlessness to devour everything was heightened tenfold.

For starters, we tried a heady yoghurt concoction – the Haydari priced at Tk250.

Creamy, rich and utterly refreshing, the Haydari blew us away. It was the perfect blend of flavours, the creamy texture of the yoghurt and complementing herbs.

The side of hot, freshly-baked flat bread that melted in our mouths seemed to be the ideal accompaniment. As for the Ezme, a deliciously bold puree of tomatoes, brinjals and Mediterranean spices, words will not do it justice. Intoxicatingly full of flavour, the lethal combination of brinjals, tomatoes and hot pepper left us begging for more. Although they were both essentially mezes and Turkish appetisers that are meant to be used as a dip, we ended up gobbling it down as if our lives depended on it.

Next in line came the main course. Adana kebab, doner kebab, beef verity sheesh kebab, iskender kebab, each priced within Tk950– the options were endless.

Each dish on their menu seemed like it deserved to be savoured. After much argument we finally settled on Mehmet Gunes (priced at Tk2,000), a mixed platter of Adana kebab, beef sheesh kebab, chicken sheesh kebab, iskender kebab, doner kebab, chicken wings, chicken boti kebab and lamb chops. It came with a side of spiced onions, potato wedges, spiced rice and freshly-baked bread.

And of course, the quintessential cup of yoghurt, courtesy of their head chef who specialises in yoghurts and mezes.

Although all the kebabs were deliciously cooked, there definitely were a few standouts. The beef and chicken sheesh were exceptionally mouth-watering, while the perfectly marinated Adana and iskender kebab had us salivating. The spice quotient was brilliant enough to bring out the flavour of the minced meat without drowning the succulent meat. The mix of flavours from the ezme, the yoghurt

and the wonderfully spiced Adana left little for us to desire. The spiced rice and the complimentary supply of crispy bread worked in perfect harmony with our meat platter. As for their doner – of course, it was nothing like the ones that the Bangali palate is accustomed to, but it definitely was a welcome addition to my ever growing affinity toward Turkish food. The iskender kebab was savoury, full of texture and slow roasted to perfect consistency. With appetisers such as the mezes priced within Tk350 and the kebabs priced within Tk950 along with a 15% VAT and 10% service charge, it’s advisable to carry at least Tk2,000 for a full course meal for one.

By the time we came to the end of our meal, we were left feeling rapturously full.

The complimentary Turkish tea seemed to be the perfect finish to our sensational meal. Although we were left at the brink of total and utter satisfaction, one thing was certain – as long as we hadn’t tried all the other dishes on their menu, our culinary adventure was far from over.

For food that is so simply made, yet so brilliantly orchestrated, Istanbul really did outdo itself.

Atia Mosque The 400-year-old Atia Jam-e Mosque in Delduar upazila, Tangail, has been built in the early 17th century. The walls of the mosque are covered with terracotta plaques with intricate patterns. According to the Department of Archaeology and local historian, Syed Khan Panni, the zamindar of Atia had the mosque built on the bank of Louhajang River by the best masons and artisans of the time (1609). Panni was given Atia Pargana by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the early 17th century. The mosque is based next

to the shrine of Hazrat Shahan Shah, who came to Atia from Kashmir in 913 Hijri along with his 39 followers to preach Islam in the region. They were all buried near the mosque. Atia Mosque was badly damaged in the devastating earthquake of 1800. Later, Rowshan Khatoon Chowdhurani, a female merchant from Delhi, restored the damaged mosque in 1837. In 1909, the zamindar of Delduar, Abu Ahmed Guznavi Khan, along with Wajid Ali Khan Panni and other zamindars of Atia refurbished it again.

Korotia Zamindar Bari Zamindar Wajid Ali Khan Panni built this manson in 1899 AD in Tangail. It is just a few minutes away from the highway, with four gateways on all four sides of the zamindar bari. There is a pond in the backyard and a very big fruit garden next to it. He also established Sadat College in 1925 in the Rokeya Mahal. It was named after his grandfather Sadat Ali Khan Panni. Rokeya Mahal is now used as a school and is based not too far from the zamindar bari.

Campanile di San Marco The Campanile di San Marco is a famous 325 feet tall brick bell tower in Veneto.

Its construction began in the 9th century and took on its present form in 1515.

During the 15th century this tower was used for punishing clerics who were accused of unethical behaviour. It has a 16th century marble veranda at its base.

In 1902, the tower collapsed and out of all the bells constructed, the largest original bell, called the marangona, survived. Later in 1912, the bell tower was reconstructed from scratch.

inspire the entrepreneurs.

Quazi M, Ahmed, CEO, Future Leaders moderated the sessions. A panel discussion by experienced PR gurus namely Kristen Bergmen, M Rizwan Sharif, senior lecturer, public relations, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and Sabrina Zaman, chief executive, Impact PR, took place to enhance PR skills of the entrepreneurs.

DIU initiates week long training workshop Daffodil International University (DIU) initiated a week long training workshop on “Electronic Journalism” for the students of one year post graduate diploma on Journalism of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) as a part of their course inaugurated at DIU JMC Media Lab recently.
