Army, joint forces providing support to vehicular movement Jamil Khan and n Mohammad Abu Hayat Mahmud The flow of vehicles on highways and the capital’s streets returned to almost normal yesterday, the second day of the opposition’s 83-hour blockade programme. An increased number of intercity and intra-city passenger buses were seen operating on the streets and highways under police protection. Army was also seen providing security and guidance for smooth vehicular movement in some places, including Jatrabari in the capital and Mirersarai in Chittagong. Transport workers, however, said the presence of passengers had been thin.

But few long-route buses left the capital because of the absence of passengers and support. Many passengers were apprehensive about boarding a bus despite their urgency. ABM Kausar, manager of a garment factory, said he needed to go to Comilla as his father was ill, and “I was afraid of taking the bus as it might come under an arson attack. But I feel a little

safer, hearing that the police are giving security and the army are patrolling the streets.” A nine-member monitoring cell has been formed to ensure smooth bus transit under Deputy Inspector General of Highway Police Asaduzzaman. The team will instruct local administrations accordingly in case of any emergency. Private bus services and that of the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation will start operating from today across the country except a few districts such as Bogra, Rajshahi and Sirajganj. BRTC Chairman Jashim Uddin Khan told the Dhaka Tribune that the corporation had made the decision at a meeting of the communication ministry. Asaduzzaman, the DIG of highway police, told the Dhaka Tribune that they were ready to provide foolproof security to buses that left the capital. From Gabtoli terminal, a few buses left for Manikganj, Paturia and Aricha. Around 200 buses left the Mohakhali and Sayedabad bus terminals. Hazi Mohammad Ali, president of Sayedabad intercity bus-terminal workers’ association, said over 150 buses had left the terminal yesterday and the number would double at night. “The presence of passengers is low, but if the law enforcers support us, we think it will go up,” he said.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 6

disciples might have links with the murder including those kept as hostages during the killings which took place around 5:30pm. Abdullah, who is a bank official, told the Dhaka Tribune that his father, brother Sarwarul Islam Monir and four disciples might have been killed for the religious practices and views. Lutfor claimed himself to be the commander-in-chief of the forces of Imam Mahdi since 1997. Pointing fingers at the militants, Abdullah said: “The killings could be the continuation of previous attacks carried out by cadres. Later we were informed that those were followers of [detained Huji chief] Mufti Abdul Hannan.

“My father had also been vocal against the Islamist fundamentalist leaders like Delawar Hossain Sayedee, former Islami Oikya Jote leader Mufti Fazlul Huq Amini, Charmonai Pir Fazlul Karim and Shaikh-ul Hadis for their anti-state activities and corruption.” He also suspects some disciples of his father. When asked, Abdullah said he was out for a walk at the time of the incident. Lutfor’s wife Salma claimed that although a lot of money was looted from the house, the motive was something else. “The killers also wanted to be disciples. But all on a sudden, they swooped on us with sharp weapons.”  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1
