EC may assess Taranco’s polls shift call today CEC says everything is possible within rules Rakibuddin said the UN assistance n Kamran Reza Chowdhury, for holding the upcoming polls, among Sheikh Shahariar Zaman and Mohammad Zakaria

The Election Commission is likely to assess the possibility of rescheduling the upcoming parliamentary polls at a meeting today. Wishing not to be named, an election commissioner yesterday told the Dhaka Tribune that the meeting would discuss UN Assistant Secretary-General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco’s proposal for shifting the January 5 elections. “He [Fernandez-Taranco] wanted to know if the elections could be shifted at this stage,” CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad told reporters at a press conference after his meeting with the UN envoy that had started at 11am. The CEC told the UN envoy that “everything is possible if the political parties reach a consensus on it, but that must be within the rules.”

other polls-related issues, also came up for discussion at the meeting with Fernandez-Taranco. He said the issue of consensus had been compounded as the political parties were yet to sort out their differences of opinion on the polls. “We should not disclose anything more as the UN delegation has been trying to hammer out a solution to ensure participation of all political parties [in the next general elections],” said Rakibuddin Ahmad. The BNP-led opposition alliance’s announcement of boycotting the elections under Sheikh Hasina’s interim government has put before the ruling Awami League the great challenge of keeping the Jatiya Party in the race. But Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad has threatened to follow the BNP’s path  PAGE 2 COLUMN 3

The International Crimes Tribunal yesterday issued the warrant after it had received the copy of the full verdict given by the Appellate Division on September 17 on two appeals filed against the tribunal’s judgement. Around 12:30pm, tribunal Registrar AKM Nasir Uddin told reporters that the warrant had been sent to the home ministry, the Dhaka district magistrate and the Dhaka Central Jail authorities. He said: “We have already received the Appellate Division’s judgement and all the documents we had sent earlier. On receiving those, the documents were submitted to tribunal 2.” Around 4pm, Arunabh Chakrabarty, deputy registrar of the tribunal, was seen getting into a car with the death warrant wrapped in a red cloth as is the custom. The tribunal registrar later confirmed reporters that the warrant for execution of Quader Molla’s death sentence had been sent to the jail authorities.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

their resignation letters to the prime minister since the resignation drama unfolded five days back when JP Chairman HM Ershad declared his party would not take part in the next poll. Ruhul Amin Hawlader, secretary general of JP, told reporters yesterday they would send resignation letters to the premier today by post as they

failed to get the PM’s appointment. However, he told the Dhaka Tribune at 8pm that he had given the resignation letter of six ministers and one adviser to one of his office staff but he does not know whether he (office staff ) had sent those or not. He also said if he did not send those letters they would be sent on Monday. JP is buying time by lingering the resignation drama to bargain with the government, sources said. The condition of the witness, Golam Mostafa, is stated to be critical as he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital from Khulna for treatment. His wife received minor injuries to her hand during the attack around 3am. Mostafa’s son Hafizur Rahman, 20,

HM Ershad still remains adamant that he would not join the election though some ministers including Secretary General Ruhul Amin Hawlader are trying to use it for personal gain, a presidium member of JP wishing anonymity told the Dhaka Tribune. called another witness against Sayedee Ruhul Amin Nobin immediately after the attack. Hafiz told Nobin that he had recognised two of the three attackers who chopped his father with a machete. They were activists of BNP and Jamaat, he said. The Dhaka Tribune talked to Nobin yesterday evening but could not reach Hafiz. “The miscreants entered the house by digging a tunnel through the earthen floor. They had accomplices waiting outside who escaped as the victims’ cry for help alerted the neighbours,” said Nobin.

Pirojpur Police Superintendent Akhteruzzaman said he had not considered the attack as a simple incident of burglary. The attack came only a week after police guard at Mostafa’s house at Hoglabunia village under Parerhat union of Zianagar was withdrawn. Earlier consistent threats on Mostafa’s life forced the authorities to deploy law enforcers. Mostafa had filed several general diaries with Zianagar police station in the last two years. It is now a daunting task for the Election Commission to defer the polls schedule as the deadline for submitting nomination papers has already passed, said a number of ministers. Moreover, if any one of the candidates, likely to be elected unopposed, files a writ petition challenging the deferment it will push the country into a new crisis, they said.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 3

BNP likely to extend blockade till Thursday n Mohammad Al-Masum Molla Amid UN Assistant Secretary-General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco’s visit to broker a political deal the BNP-led 18-party alliance is planning to extend its ongoing 72-hour rail-road-waterways blockade until Thursday. Some senior leaders even wanted to carry on with the programme until December 13 as it is the last date for withdrawal of nomination. However, some other leaders said as the day is Friday and there is a possibility of election rescheduling they should end the blockade on Thursday. The announcement of extension of the blockade might come today. The UN chief’s visiting envoy on Saturday at a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina enquired whether there was any scope for deferring the 10th general election, now scheduled for January 5. Just after a day, a senior Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu said his party had no problem if the polls were to be rescheduled to a later date. Another senior leader of the party seeking anonymity told the Dhaka Tribune that the ongoing programme

would not be postponed even if there is a light at the end of the tunnel. BNP again asked the government to take initiative to hold an inclusive election under a non-partisan government while Taranco is pursuing the political parties to resolve the crisis through talks.
