Old is gold Country and western The second star of the bodacious trio, country and western, sincerely played its part in the birth of the iconic sound, which we now, know as: rock & roll Zaki Adnan In the pre-rock era, the world of music was basically divided into three segments. The division was mostly attributed to socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds. While the average middle income group would tune into mainstream pop, mostly urban African Americans would embrace rhythm & blues as their own and on the other hand the rural communities would find solace in country and western. The rural communities knew music to be of two types, one being country and the other, western. Country music mostly catered to the southern parts of the US. The harmony style being one of the critical aspects of this music genre, it is quite evident that country music drew influence from white gospel. In juxtaposition to country music, there was western music, which again broke down into swing music and cowboy music. Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys and Gene Autry began the wave of western sounds. This time it was the southeast’s turn to sway and tap their feet to the

music. Ironically, geography was what divided and brought together country and western. Nashville, Tennessee – home of country music, was the ground that brought together country and western music. The birth point was considered to be the radio show called “Grand Ole Oprym” which later came to be recognised as The Radio of Country Music. Gradually, most country and western musicians migrated to Nashville, with the hopes of a promising future. Amid the spread of the country music culture, emerged a new kind of music, blue-grass. With thorough emphasis on acoustic instruments such as the mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and no drums. Blue-grass was considered to be the bee-bop jazz of country music. As these events transpired up to the 1950s, country and western slowly started to realise that it was on course for a headon collision with two other stars of the music world: mainstream pop along with rhythm & blues.

The Nexus 5 is also the first smartphone to operate under the new Android 4.4 Kit Kat. As expected, this phone is fast, well designed, and stuffed with features. The biggest plus about the Nexus 5 is the $349 (Tk27,000) price tag for the 16GB handset. The 32GB one is around $399 (Tk31,000), so it doesn’t matter if you are on a budget or not, you can’t deny how great of a deal this is. The Nexus 5 is possibly the best unlocked phone in the market. The Snapdragon 800 processor boosts the new update to Android, and its 1080p display assists in its smooth function. This flows right into its minimalist design. The edges are straighter and the curves come sharper. It measures 5.43 inches tall and 2.72 inches wide. Naturally, it’s comfortable to hold as it is a thinner and lighter model than its predecessor. Even at 0.34 inch thick and 4.59 ounces, the phone still feels sturdy.

The biggest buzz, apart from this phone, is Android’s new Kit Kat OS. It takes 16% less memory than Jelly Bean. This is where the phone really shines, keeping in mind the Nexus 5 is the only phone that boasts the new upgrade. The 2010 Toyota Vitz has a good reliability rating, comes with a lot of safety features, and doesn’t use a ton of gas, but a cramped rear seat and below-average safety scores keep it from the top of the class Tahsin Momin

If you need a small hatchback for navigating city streets, the 2010 Toyota Vitz is worth a look. It comes with a 1.0-liter, in-line 3 cylinder 67Hp engine that isn’t very fast, but it does fine in city traffic. Plus, the Vitz has good fuel economy ratings of up to 17/22 Km/L city/highway. The fuel economy is partly due to the fuel saving automatic transmission feature. It comes with a system where the fuel cuts off when coasting or light braking and the torque converter locks up to keep the engine from turning (as if it was a

manual gearbox in gear). And when you accelerate again the engine fires and disengages the lock up converter. It isn’t the smoothest-riding hot hatch either, feeling particularly jumpy over shabby surfaces. With small dimensions, a tight turning circle and light, responsive steering, the Vitz is easy to manoeuvre in town. However, the steering doesn’t get heavier at higher speeds, so the car can

feel twitchy. The Vitz’ features power windows and door locks, keyless entry, a GPS navigation, USB, and auxiliary jacks and rear view camera. In terms of safety features, the base model comes with anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and 6 airbags. The Vitz’s crash test scores, however, are below-average in the class. The Vitz isn’t very large, so tall passengers will be cramped in the back. But it has fairly descent boot space for a hatchback. While the Vitz doesn’t have the most interior space or the highest safety scores in the class, it’s still a worthy choice if you want an inexpensive small car with good fuel economy and reliability that can handle city life.

It helps if your teeth don’t look like a mouthful of Chicklets, but the perfect smile will only take you so far. However, keep in mind that assets do not necessarily mean the properties to your name. In this case, we’re talking about your bodily blessings.

Once it’s been decided that you have it all, the next thing on a man’s checklist is your nationality. What you’ll need: Eye shadow primer (if you don’t have that, you can use foundation as a substitute), liner brush, old mascara wand, dark-brown eye shadow and dark-brown liner pencil. 1) Dab a little primer or foundation through your eyebrows. Blend and let it dry. 2) Use the eye pencil and draw a line through the bottom of your eye brow. 3) Repeat the same procedure, only this time, through the top part of your brow and only through the middle and focus on the end of your eyebrow. 4) Take the old mascara wand and comb through your brows, blending the harsh lines of the pencil as you go. 5) Take some brown eye shadow and fill in your brows with an angled liner brush.

Male perspective Part II Mr Tulu is agitated today, he never really liked being on a rickshaw. The whole mechanics of the vehicle confuses him. It’s too high, with very little safety and on top of that it leaves one entirely exposed. Mr Tulu doesn’t like the feeling of being exposed but he doesn’t have a choice. Days when the country stands still because of things like a strike, rickshaws are the only modes of transportation. Also it’s pretty easy to jump down from, in the event of an attack Esha Aurora I remember when hartals were powerful demonstrations in favour of democracy. Look at these people now. They’ve gone ahead and made this into a redundant form of protest. Mostly it’s an excuse to vandalise and violently attack people. How did we ever get to this point? I always felt that when we rinse one thing over and over again we take away its power to be effective. Now I have to spend days in fear of my car being burnt or broken. I can’t dream of taking the bus, because they are the first to be attacked. I see it on the news all the time. People being burnt alive in there. When did we lose our humanity? It’s like a war zone, only that it’s periodical. The wife always gets mad when I tell her I am going to work during hartals. I don’t think she understands that

if I didn’t then we would be losing hundreds of thousands of taka every year. She says she doesn’t care. She can do without the money but not me. Truth be told, sometimes I am frightened to death. I am always on the lookout for a hiding place when I am on my way to work, it’s good to be vigilant. Mostly though, when I look around, I see people like me rushing to get to work. I keep imagining a time in the future when our people realise that strikes are only useful when there is a real meaning behind them. Then again we are not the most creative as people, and once we see something that works we stick to it even when it stops working. Perpetual state of denial. What is to become of us? I don’t know. I just want to get into my office and turn the AC on, since this heat is doing a number on me.

Prep your mascara wand

The best way to lift limp lashes is to begin with a nightly regime that promises to leave your lashes feeling plump and liftready. Before going to bed, apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to your lashes. This provides moisture to your lashes, eliminating any chances of waking up to lashes that are dull and wilted.

Most mascara wands have a glop of gooey mascara build up at its end. This tends to make the mascara spread unevenly, leaving tiny dollops of it everywhere. The best way to tackle this is to dab the tip on a tissue before applying mascara.

Apply a volume maximising mascara Using a traditional brush wand, don’t simply sweep it in an upward motion. Instead, opt for a zigzag sweep to ensure that your lashes are being separated as you move towards the tips. Apply a light coat to one eye and then shift to the other eye. This will allow ample time for each coat to dry. Don’t only focus on the outer lashes. Work the mascara wand to coat the inner lashes to open up your eyes completely. Once they’ve dried up, curl your lashes one last time.

A: Hoodies are incredibly comfortable and easy to put on. Apart from functionality, it gives you a sporty and casual look. With that said, it should be stated that the hoodie is as common as the t-shirt. You are not too old to be wearing hoodies. Keep in mind, professional boxers of all ages wear it during their morning runs and other training sessions. Now, if they can keep it on, you shouldn’t be questioning your maturity with this multipurpose item in the wardrobe. Q: What is the best way to apply foundation? For a natural look, I always apply foundation with a brush and use my fingers to blend it into the skin. I feel I get a more even finish that way because your hands warm the foundation, helping it to melt into your complexion. When applied with just a brush, it gives a much heavier finish, but if you use a brush and then blend it in, it looks more like a moisturiser, but with better coverage. You can then add concealer, applied with a fine brush, just to the problem areas on the face. The easiest way to seamlessly apply foundation is to use a sponge as you can reach difficult areas like the corners of your nose and right under your lower lashes. Keep in mind: A lot of make-up product is wasted when applied with a sponge but it does give a more flawless finish. Q: How can I keep my lipstick from feathering or fading? with a pencil in a tone similar to your lipstick. Then apply the lipstick with a brush, this presses the pigment deeper into your lips, in comparison to when you would use the tube or a finger. A brush will also allow you to apply several thin layers (another key to long wear) without a cakey result. Keep in mind: The glossier or sheerer the lip color, the less its staying power and the quicker it will fade. A colourless lip liner will prevent feathering and will work with any lipstick shade. Q: How can I avoid getting raccoon eyes when I wear black mascara? A: Using too much of eye cream under your eyes can lead to smudged and smeared mascara. For daytime, try a hydrating eye cream formula, which has water as the primary ingredient. A light dusting of translucent powder on your eyes before applying mascara can also eliminate smudging. The powder absorbs excess oils and moisture around the eye area therefore it keeps the mascara in place. Keep in mind: Mascara tends to smudge because of excess oil on the skin. Both waterproof and non-waterproof mascaras

will have this problem, since waterproof mascara is generally soluble in oil. Q: How do I stop my eyeliner from getting smudged? Does your eyeliner creep from your lash line to the lid crease or start to run after a couple of hours? If so, invest in a good eye primer and apply a thin coat to clean eyelids, blending it into the creases with your finger. It will give your liner longer staying power and will prevent it from transferring colour to the creases or smudging down your eyes. It is easy to criticise your parents, without having spoken to them. If you tell them you have been seeing him for four years, they will feel betrayed and they will think this is proof of you not being a reliable person. None the less, talk to them, it is always the best way, do not have intermediaries, they will never represent your feelings and situation. Do not be confrontational, tell them that you would like to see them happy and what would make you happy is to be able to marry the man you love. You take responsibility for your happiness and make it work. Remember to love someone is one thing but learning to live with that person is the challenge. It means respecting the differences, understanding that before marriage you have expectations of your fiance’s behaviour, your expectations may not match reality. The success of a marriage is to understand the above point.

The boat pose Sit on your yoga mat with your knees bent in front of you. Lean back slightly and make sure to tuck your tailbone under your spine. Breathe easily into this, contract your abs and extend both your legs outward. If you are a beginner keep your legs as close to the ground without letting your feet actually touch it. Remember to keep a flat back through out. You can lean back but always remember to keep your chest forward and back as flat as possible. For the more advanced, raise your legs up as high as possible without bending your knees and grab onto the inside of your knees or your ankles, relaxed breathing will make this pose much easier.

The plankarama Planks may look simple but it works up a sweat in no time and is an all around workout for your entire body. For streamline abs though, get down on all fours and start off in a push-up position with your wrists right below your shoulders and your knees off of the ground. Remember to position your body in a straight line. Lower your forearms and keep your elbows and palms flat on the ground. Keeping your toes curled, engage your abs by squeezing your stomach in and pulling your belly towards the spine. Focus on your stomach, your form and imagine you are a plank of wood, so make sure you are as straight as an arrow. Your body should

be positioned in a straight line from your heals to the back of your head. Hold this position for 60 seconds and remember to breathe. Repeat both these postures three times, 60 seconds each and let your abs curse your for this massacre.

Ingredients (serves 1) • 1 cup milk • 1tbsp peanut butter (chunky or smooth, whichever you prefer) • 1tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 1/2tbsp sugar • 1tsp vanilla extract

It’s November already. Today on my way home, I realised some of the roads I was crossing were in the process of being adorned and draped with countless rows of little white fairy lights. This is always the first sign that winter has come to Dhaka, bringing all the festivities of the wedding season and the refreshing yet crisp chilly weather with it. We barely get to enjoy cool weather here in Dhaka and are so used to the humidity, we forget that tea or coffee are not the only hot drinks to serve at dinner parties on a cool December night. Today’s recipe is perfect to serve at a rooftop barbeque as a welcome drink, or an afterdinner dessert drink. It’s different in contrast to what people are used to which is normal tea, masala tea, or coffee Fareeha Chowdhury

Directions : Whisk milk, cocoa powder, vanilla and sugar, together in a small pot on the stove. Bring to a simmer and then add peanut butter, stirring well to get rid of clumps. Pour into your favourite mug and serve with whipped cream and salted peanuts.

This recipe could not get simpler. It’s a one pot recipe and you can multiply the ingredients to serve however many people you want. It’s the perfect cup of goodness to hold in your hands and warm you up on a cool night. It’s almost like drinking a Reese’s peanut butter cup.

Step 2 Two minutes for soft boiled eggs The soft boiled egg is characterised by solid egg whites and a deliciously runny yolk. Gently crack open the side and serve hot. Four and a half minutes for medium boiled eggs Spending four and a half minutes boiling your eggs will give you a yolk that is solid and dark orange in colour.
