Music

Old is gold Country and western The second star of the bodacious trio, country and western, sincerely played its part in the birth of the iconic sound, which we now, know as: rock & roll Zaki Adnan In the pre-rock era, the world of music was basically divided into three segments. The division was mostly attributed to socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds. While the average middle income group would tune into mainstream pop, mostly urban African Americans would embrace rhythm & blues as their own and on the other hand the rural communities would find solace in country and western. The rural communities knew music to be of two types, one being country and the other, western. Country music mostly catered to the southern parts of the US. The harmony style being one of the critical aspects of this music genre, it is quite evident that country music drew influence from white gospel. In juxtaposition to country music, there was western music, which again broke down into swing music and cowboy music. Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys and Gene Autry began the wave of western sounds. This time it was the southeast’s turn to sway and tap their feet to the

music. Ironically, geography was what divided and brought together country and western. Nashville, Tennessee – home of country music, was the ground that brought together country and western music. The birth point was considered to be the radio show called “Grand Ole Oprym” which later came to be recognised as The Radio of Country Music. Gradually, most country and western musicians migrated to Nashville, with the hopes of a promising future. Amid the spread of the country music culture, emerged a new kind of music, blue-grass. With thorough emphasis on acoustic instruments such as the mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and no drums. Blue-grass was considered to be the bee-bop jazz of country music. As these events transpired up to the 1950s, country and western slowly started to realise that it was on course for a headon collision with two other stars of the music world: mainstream pop along with rhythm & blues.

To get yourself fiddling to the sounds of country and western pioneers, be sure to listen to • Roy Acuff: The King of Country Music • The Carter Family: “Anchored in Love” • The Best of Gene Autry • Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys’: 24 Greatest Hits, The Very Best of Jimmie Rodgers

Easy on the spending

5 and counting The Google Nexus 5 is the purest Google smartphone to date Mahmood Hossain

For the financially strict, Level is for those who want to track every transaction, without having to deal with receipts and continuously logging onto their online accounts. Level provides an easy way to watch a certain budget and keeps you at a safe distance from overspending Mahmood Hossain One of the main features of Level is called “Spendable.” You can make wiser spending decisions by regularly checking the “Spendable remaining” feature of this app. You set yourself a budget for the month and the app will break things down for you. It lets you know how much you are able to spend in a given month, week, and day, down to the last cent. At the end of the day, you can check what figure you are left with to work on. Another easy to use feature is “Save.” The idea of the app is to keep track of your spending habits and how much you want to save for the future. It’s about where you are headed. The “Save” feature allows you make the correct decisions keeping your long-term goals in mind. Again, it’s broken down to months, weeks, and days. You can see what you have saved in a given month, which gives you the option to enter a figure that rolls over to next month’s budget. This becomes a very smooth process where your cash flow is concerned. “Plan” is yet another effective feature among those seamless steps for a better financial future. This gives you an overall look of your recent income, bills, savings, and spendable figures. With its minimalist and flat UI design, tracking those numbers actually becomes a fun daily task. Level Money is free to download on the iPhone but requires iOS 7.0 or later. This is also compatible with the iPad and iPod touch. Level is also coming to Android soon. Check out levelmoney. com for more information.

The Nexus 5 is also the first smartphone to operate under the new Android 4.4 Kit Kat. As expected, this phone is fast, well designed, and stuffed with features. The biggest plus about the Nexus 5 is the $349 (Tk27,000) price tag for the 16GB handset. The 32GB one is around $399 (Tk31,000), so it doesn’t matter if you are on a budget or not, you can’t deny how great of a deal this is. The Nexus 5 is possibly the best unlocked phone in the market. The Snapdragon 800 processor boosts the new update to Android, and its 1080p display assists in its smooth function. This flows right into its minimalist design. The edges are straighter and the curves come sharper. It measures 5.43 inches tall and 2.72 inches wide. Naturally, it’s comfortable to hold as it is a thinner and lighter model than its predecessor. Even at 0.34 inch thick and 4.59 ounces, the phone still feels sturdy.

The biggest buzz, apart from this phone, is Android’s new Kit Kat OS. It takes 16% less memory than Jelly Bean. This is where the phone really shines, keeping in mind the Nexus 5 is the only phone that boasts the new upgrade. In order to get a better idea of how it works, you will most likely have to read up on or watch video reviews of the new Android 4.4 Kit Kat OS. Here are some specs from the sleek Google flagship smartphone: Display: 4.95in 1920x1080 at 445ppi. Full HD IPS Corning Gorilla Glass 3 Camera: 1.3MP front facing with 8MP rear facing with Optical Image Stabilisation Processing: Qualcomm Snapdragon 800GHz and Adreno330 at 450MHz Battery: 2300mAh, talk time up to 17 hours, standby time up to 300 hours. The 2010 Toyota Vitz has a good reliability rating, comes with a lot of safety features, and doesn’t use a ton of gas, but a cramped rear seat and below-average safety scores keep it from the top of the class Tahsin Momin

If you need a small hatchback for navigating city streets, the 2010 Toyota Vitz is worth a look. It comes with a 1.0-liter, in-line 3 cylinder 67Hp engine that isn’t very fast, but it does fine in city traffic. Plus, the Vitz has good fuel economy ratings of up to 17/22 Km/L city/highway. The fuel economy is partly due to the fuel saving automatic transmission feature. It comes with a system where the fuel cuts off when coasting or light braking and the torque converter locks up to keep the engine from turning (as if it was a

manual gearbox in gear). And when you accelerate again the engine fires and disengages the lock up converter. It isn’t the smoothest-riding hot hatch either, feeling particularly jumpy over shabby surfaces. With small dimensions, a tight turning circle and light, responsive steering, the Vitz is easy to manoeuvre in town. However, the steering doesn’t get heavier at higher speeds, so the car can

feel twitchy. The Vitz’ features power windows and door locks, keyless entry, a GPS navigation, USB, and auxiliary jacks and rear view camera. In terms of safety features, the base model comes with anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and 6 airbags. The Vitz’s crash test scores, however, are below-average in the class. The Vitz isn’t very large, so tall passengers will be cramped in the back. But it has fairly descent boot space for a hatchback. While the Vitz doesn’t have the most interior space or the highest safety scores in the class, it’s still a worthy choice if you want an inexpensive small car with good fuel economy and reliability that can handle city life.

Tease

First impressions are the last impressions A sneak peek into a superficial man’s mind, it’s all about first impressions Sabah Rahman You walk into a restaurant, about to meet your blind date. Is it the flutter of her lashes that catch your eye? Or is the glimmering shine of her perfectly done manicure? What does a man really notice about a woman? Avenue T spills the dirty truth behind the workings of a man’s mind.

The assets

Whoever said a window to a woman’s soul is through her eyes is certainly wrong. Contrary to popular belief, when you’re getting the eye from a man, he’s really not trying to catch your eye and get a glimpse of your soul – far from it. What he’s really looking at are your physical attributes. There, its been said. It really is your “assets” he’s checking out. It may seem obscene, but it is how it is. It helps if your teeth don’t look like a mouthful of Chicklets, but the perfect smile will only take you so far. However, keep in mind that assets do not necessarily mean the properties to your name. In this case, we’re talking about your bodily blessings.

The perfect amount of “junk in the trunk” is what really sets them off. If you’ve got the junk, you’ve got it made honey.

The green card

Once it’s been decided that you have it all, the next thing on a man’s checklist is your nationality. Nothing stands out quite like the glint of a green card and the potential promise of a future in the US, or even the UK. The prospect of an American Born Confused Desi (ABCD) stands so high on the priority list that even if you’re not too attractive on the physical front, the green card will make up for anything that is lacking.

Daddy’s dough

Assets, check. Greencard, check. But what is a life that doesn’t involve the family? We are Bangalis, after all. Marrying a woman invariably means marrying the family, so it’s only natural to keep an eye out for the in-laws, namely the man of the house since he’s the breadwinner.

The downsides of being down low Dating in Dhaka (or anywhere in Bangladesh for that matter) is an incredibly delicate affair, seeing as how privacy is at a premium here. If it’s not the incredibly anachronistic taboos about the interaction between the sexes, it’s the social pressure from the meddlers, and of course, social networking makes everything a thousand times worse. This makes it tempting to lay low and be extremely discreet about your relationship. While this is wise, especially in the early stages, (and we all hate those overshare couples anyway), in the long run, too much of the cloak-and-dagger can hurt your partner. We’ll give you not one, but two reasons why Sabrina Fatma Ahmad She knows I love her. Why do I have to shout it out from the rooftops to prove it?

While you get off easy as a “player”, she’ll be assigned to the role of “desperate groupie” and if you respect your girl, that’s not a nice thing to subject her to.

You don’t. But if you’re always so casual in public that people don’t realise you’re dating, whether or not she plays along, you come off as not invested, and you can bet the people who do know about you being with her, will bug her about being with someone who isn’t serious about her. Even if she acts cool about it, if you guys are serious, it will get to her over time.

Tact Rant

Male perspective Part II Mr Tulu is agitated today, he never really liked being on a rickshaw. The whole mechanics of the vehicle confuses him. It’s too high, with very little safety and on top of that it leaves one entirely exposed. Mr Tulu doesn’t like the feeling of being exposed but he doesn’t have a choice. Days when the country stands still because of things like a strike, rickshaws are the only modes of transportation. Also it’s pretty easy to jump down from, in the event of an attack Esha Aurora I remember when hartals were powerful demonstrations in favour of democracy. Look at these people now. They’ve gone ahead and made this into a redundant form of protest. Mostly it’s an excuse to vandalise and violently attack people. How did we ever get to this point? I always felt that when we rinse one thing over and over again we take away its power to be effective. Now I have to spend days in fear of my car being burnt or broken. I can’t dream of taking the bus, because they are the first to be attacked. I see it on the news all the time. People being burnt alive in there. When did we lose our humanity? It’s like a war zone, only that it’s periodical. The wife always gets mad when I tell her I am going to work during hartals. I don’t think she understands that

if I didn’t then we would be losing hundreds of thousands of taka every year. She says she doesn’t care. She can do without the money but not me. Truth be told, sometimes I am frightened to death. I am always on the lookout for a hiding place when I am on my way to work, it’s good to be vigilant. Mostly though, when I look around, I see people like me rushing to get to work. I keep imagining a time in the future when our people realise that strikes are only useful when there is a real meaning behind them. Then again we are not the most creative as people, and once we see something that works we stick to it even when it stops working. Perpetual state of denial. What is to become of us? I don’t know. I just want to get into my office and turn the AC on, since this heat is doing a number on me.

Getting those lashes butterfly kiss ready It’s not always you need to be genetically endowed with beautifully thick eyelashes to be able to give your beau that gentle butterfly kiss. To really achieve that dramatic flutter of professionally curled lashes, all you have to do is master these easy one-two-three tricks N Anita Amreen

from the dryer. Heat for three to four seconds. Lightly touch the steel edge to make sure it’s not too hot, then begin curling. Curl in three parts - at the very base of your lashes, in the centre, and at the tip. Once you’ve gotten your lashes between the curler wings, hold for four to five seconds. You may curl the very edge of your lashes a second time to give it a really rounded look.

Prep your mascara wand

The best way to lift limp lashes is to begin with a nightly regime that promises to leave your lashes feeling plump and liftready. Before going to bed, apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to your lashes. This provides moisture to your lashes, eliminating any chances of waking up to lashes that are dull and wilted.

Use an eyelash curler

Photo: Big Stock

AVEN U E T TH U RS DAY, NOVE M B E R 21 , 201 3

The beauty of the lash curler lies in its ability to instantly give your lashes a dramatic lift. Not only are you able to curl your lashes for maximum exposure, a lash curler ensures that they stay that way. Take a hair dryer and heat your lashes, holding the curler eight centimetres away

Most mascara wands have a glop of gooey mascara build up at its end. This tends to make the mascara spread unevenly, leaving tiny dollops of it everywhere. The best way to tackle this is to dab the tip on a tissue before applying mascara.

Apply a volume maximising mascara Using a traditional brush wand, don’t simply sweep it in an upward motion. Instead, opt for a zigzag sweep to ensure that your lashes are being separated as you move towards the tips. Apply a light coat to one eye and then shift to the other eye. This will allow ample time for each coat to dry. Don’t only focus on the outer lashes. Work the mascara wand to coat the inner lashes to open up your eyes completely. Once they’ve dried up, curl your lashes one last time.

Business not pleasure As a professional, it’s very important to stay on top of your style game Business travel can be taxing on your body, but that doesn’t need to affect how you look on the outside. When time is not your best friend, it’s better to keep your suit of armour on you the entire time. Think about it, you have a 10am flight, 1pm arrival with a 1:45pm meeting. Time to change out of something comfortable is out of the question. There are few things to remember next time you head out for another mission. Here’s how to save time with style. The basics – Wearing your suit on the flight is not a bad idea. First, you have the tight timing to consider. The major mental note should be that you are on the road, which means you are still on the job. And you never know, the man sitting next to you may be your next boss. Look sharp, look alert. Take off the suit jacket and place it neatly. Break out – The many outfits you weren’t able to wear during office hours can come out to play. Being business like doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun. Bring out that patterned shirt and knit tie, live a little. Eye on the prize – From the moment you step into the airport to the moment you step off from another, it’s all about timing. People will notice a man with a classic timepiece around the wrist.

What’s even more impressive is getting to meetings on time. Traffic can be a huge pain in the rear, but if you can, do what you can to get to your destination ahead of time. Lighten the load – The latest leather folio bag keeps all your important tools without the weight of a briefcase or a backpack. It keeps everything you need, like your phone, tablet, headphones, business cards, boarding pass, and well, you get the idea. Quick feet – Loafers. Think about it, it’s that easy. They can have the business look but it’s a cinch to take off when you go through airport security.

Q: I have always wondered what to wear underneath my white linen pants. I have had them for quite some time, they fit well, but I’m nervous that my underwear will show. What to do?

A: As beautiful and comfortable white linen can be, you’re right. It’s a tricky situation. You could wear boxers, but they may risk looking too bulky and unflattering. But if you are buying the correct kind of boxers, it shouldn’t be a problem. Modern day cuts are trimmed and closer to the body. The best result is opting for solid white underwear. Whether it be a properly fitted pair of boxers or briefs, it’s the ideal look when you are wearing something that is transparent. Any other colour will simply look odd and out of place.

A stroll in plaid

Vintage themes tend to pop up again here and there. It’s not by accident. In fact, we’d be better off not calling it a trend. These are the everlasting styles of clothing that never really left Plaid happens to be one of the select few that escaped the spotlight yet still managed to remain on stage. This season, a plaid suit should be a must buy or make for your wardrobe. It used to be for the older gentlemen, but as usual, fashion has transformed the plaid suit for the modern and bold. This is definitely not for the faint of heart. The major difference is the cut. Slim fitted suits are the only acceptable cut for today’s look. Once you get the fit down, the next step is how to wear the entire plaid suit properly. In the past, men were opting for the quieter and shadow plaid suits. This time around, the new plaids will get you

noticed. It’s much louder, so how do you balance things out? You tone things down with solid coloured accessories. If your plaid suit has a light blue hue to it, putting it together with a white dress shirt, dark grey tie, pale blue socks, and a black briefcase sends your statement of intent. Not only will you look sharp, you won’t have to sacrifice your serious for business image. Plaid is no longer for the Duke of Windsor or bitter geezers, so give your closet an upgrade for this season’s top suit style.

Articles by Mahmood Hossain Send in your queries at avenuet@dhakatribune.com

A fantastic advantage of having a modern day plaid suit is that you can use it in many different looks. You can use it as a suit, a sport coat, or you can wear the trousers with a jeans jacket

Style tip:

Q: The weather is getting colder and there are certain things I’m not willing to let go. I love wearing hoodies, but at the age of 34, am I too old for hoodies?

A: Hoodies are incredibly comfortable and easy to put on. Apart from functionality, it gives you a sporty and casual look. With that said, it should be stated that the hoodie is as common as the t-shirt. You are not too old to be wearing hoodies. Keep in mind, professional boxers of all ages wear it during their morning runs and other training sessions. Now, if they can keep it on, you shouldn’t be questioning your maturity with this multipurpose item in the wardrobe. The origins of the hoodie comes from the American working class, just like jeans did for cowboys. They got the job done, while keeping the hard working men warm and fended off the chilling winds. As long as there aren’t any faded cartoon characters frolicking around your hoodie, you can never be too old for them.

Your make-up questions answered Tilat Khayer

Q: What is the best way to apply foundation? For a natural look, I always apply foundation with a brush and use my fingers to blend it into the skin. I feel I get a more even finish that way because your hands warm the foundation, helping it to melt into your complexion. When applied with just a brush, it gives a much heavier finish, but if you use a brush and then blend it in, it looks more like a moisturiser, but with better coverage. You can then add concealer, applied with a fine brush, just to the problem areas on the face. The easiest way to seamlessly apply foundation is to use a sponge as you can reach difficult areas like the corners of your nose and right under your lower lashes. Keep in mind: A lot of make-up product is wasted when applied with a sponge but it does give a more flawless finish. Q: How can I keep my lipstick from feathering or fading? Dab a bit of foundation all over the lips and line the lip - it helps to fill in fine lines and gives a lip color something to adhere to. Start by outlining and filling in your lips

with a pencil in a tone similar to your lipstick. Then apply the lipstick with a brush, this presses the pigment deeper into your lips, in comparison to when you would use the tube or a finger. A brush will also allow you to apply several thin layers (another key to long wear) without a cakey result. Keep in mind: The glossier or sheerer the lip color, the less its staying power and the quicker it will fade. A colourless lip liner will prevent feathering and will work with any lipstick shade. Q: How can I avoid getting raccoon eyes when I wear black mascara? A: Using too much of eye cream under your eyes can lead to smudged and smeared mascara. For daytime, try a hydrating eye cream formula, which has water as the primary ingredient. A light dusting of translucent powder on your eyes before applying mascara can also eliminate smudging. The powder absorbs excess oils and moisture around the eye area therefore it keeps the mascara in place. Keep in mind: Mascara tends to smudge because of excess oil on the skin. Both waterproof and non-waterproof mascaras

will have this problem, since waterproof mascara is generally soluble in oil. Q: How do I stop my eyeliner from getting smudged? Does your eyeliner creep from your lash line to the lid crease or start to run after a couple of hours? If so, invest in a good eye primer and apply a thin coat to clean eyelids, blending it into the creases with your finger. It will give your liner longer staying power and will prevent it from transferring colour to the creases or smudging down your eyes. Next, dust a translucent loose powder or skincoloured eye shadow over the primer to set it in place. Finally, apply your eyeliner. If you love the defined look of a liquid

liner, a cake or gel liner, is ideal as it lasts for the long haul when pushed into the lashes with a flat-edged eyeliner brush. If you’re the traditional pencil eyeliner type draw a line and top it with a similar coloured eye shadow to set it in. Keep in mind: Kohl and eyeliner pencils are made to be smudge-able and have a “slip” to them so that you can easily blend them for a smoky eye look.

A colourless lip liner will prevent feathering and will work with any lipstick shade.

Protect

Use a heat-protection spray prior to the use of hair dryers, straightening or curling irons.

Heating tools can also do a number on already brittle winter hair. Don’t try to blow-dry sopping wet hair as this is a sure-fire way to further damage it. Wait until its slightly damp. Use a heatprotection spray prior to the use of hair

Not so mellow yellow Yellow is one of those colours which is understated and often flies under the radar when it comes to fashion. For Fall 2013, yellow is in full throttle and it’s looking hotter than ever

Maya Almuqtadir is the designer and owner of Mayali and a practitioner of fusing international and local trends

Maya Almuqtadir From Derek Lam to Issey Miyake, yellow has been a hue that kept showing up on the runway, from trousers and tops to leather goods and colourful accessories. If you are looking to add a bit of not so mellow yellow into your wardrobe this season, be sure to keep it bold and bright. You can even opt for canary yellow although save the pastel yellows for spring. If you don’t have any yellow clothing, accessorise your outfit with a yellow purse, shoes or jewellery in this crazy yet sophisticated colour.

Mustard yellow is flattering on most complexions.

Truth be told It is said that colours are responsible for 62-90% of our first impressions of one another. That means if you prefer black and neutrals to oranges and yellow it might be time to add a litttle colour to your wardrobe

Q. I am packing a bit of a belly and would like suggestions for silhouettes that will hide this. Please don’t say babydoll tops or empire waists, because I really don’t want to look like an expectant mother. Sincerely, Jelly Belly A. Dear Jelly, Empire waists aren’t your only recourse. You can wear flowy silhouettes, like kaftans and blouson tops, or A-line sheaths which taper at the shoulders but flare away from your midsection, creating a flattering shape. If you like more fitted styles, try this season’s hottest trend, the wrap. The asymmetrical cut will draw the eye away from your stomach, for an instant slimming effect.

Q. I’ve seen women wearing strapless dresses and tops with what appears to be clear bra straps peeking out. Is this something I need in my closet? Sincerely, Plastic Dreams A. Dear Plastic, What you’ve spotted are bras with clear, plastic straps and no, they are definitely not an item that you need to go out and purchase. Invest in a quality strapless bra instead. The whole point of wearing strapless clothing is to highlight your neck and shoulders. You’re not fooling anyone with those clear straps. They are still visible. The other disadvantage is that over time, the plastic turns a sickly yellow shade, which is highly unattractive.

Tell Issues

Letters to Mars

Dual trouble Intermingled bloodlines

I am a 40 year old married man and I have a big problem. My wife has two sisters who are younger and always flirting with me. When the opportunity arose, I somehow ended up with both of them at different times. The problem is my wife and her parents found out and now she wants a divorce but I think we can overcome this problem if we truly love each other. I know my mistake and I know I won’t do this again, but how do I make my wife believe me?

Well, as far as I know, it is very difficult to forgive in situations like this: not only was your wife betrayed by her husband but by two of her sisters. Not satisfied with one situation, you plunged into another one, wow, you really like playing with fire! If you really mean to work hard at your marriage, when your wife gets angry with you and cries and shouts, tell her YOU understand and you are prepared to work hard at conquering her back. Be very physically attentive

to her needs, make time for her and do not tell her: “You have asked me this question a million times, now I am fed up, let it go.” Tell her you understand that she cannot trust you and she can ask the same question as many times as she wants. Your wife may make your life rather difficult to see if you are really serious about working it out. You will have to prove it to her. She was stubbed not once but twice and double it when you consider her sisters’ behaviour.

Letters to Venus

At a crossroad I am a 45 year old woman and I have been divorced twice. I have four children from my previous marriages. I have a huge dilemma which involves me recently getting involved with a man who doesn’t like my children. He says they are rude and unfriendly towards him and if we were ever to get married he wants me to assure him that I will send my kids to a boarding school. As teenagers who are of the age where they are unwelcoming to strangers, I understand their difficulty in accepting him. However, he doesn’t. At the end of the day I love them both and I don’t want to ever have to face a situation where I have to choose between them.

It is not a good beginning, however, having said that, you may reach a compromise whereby until the children complete their education, you can get married but live in separate apartments. Difficult, but not impossible. Even then, you may have many challenges ahead of you, as your boyfriend doesn’t seem to know that teenagers have their own difficulties, plus the disruption in their lives was greater than normal. I don’t think your children are against him, I believe the difficulties they encountered in having different men in their lives keep them wondering if this new man is here for good or if it is just a passing phase.

AVEN U E T TH U RS DAY, NOVE M B E R 21 , 201 3

I’m a 25 year old woman who hails from a very conservative Muslim family. I fell in love with my second Christian cousin and have been in a relationship with him for the past four years. The time for marriage has now come and my parents are forcing me to get married to the man of their choice. My boyfriend wants to go ahead and tell them about us, but I know they will never accept this. They will throw him out of the house and they’ll probably marry me off to someone else instantly. He is not financially stable enough to take care of me so running away is out of the question. I don’t want to hurt my parents but I can't marry anyone else either. L

I tend to see situations like this as selfish behaviour on the parents part who want, to settle their daughter down no matter how and to disregard their daughters feelings about the marriage she is about to enter. Who cares if they are not happy? It is almost equivalent to saying marriage does not have to be happy. On the other hand, what have you done about getting a job, encourage the person you love to find a career that will not only satisfy him but improve his status? It is easy to criticise your parents, without having spoken to them. If you tell them you have been seeing him for four years, they will feel betrayed and they will think this is proof of you not being a reliable person. None the less, talk to them, it is always the best way, do not have intermediaries, they will never represent your feelings and situation. Do not be confrontational, tell them that you would like to see them happy and what would make you happy is to be able to marry the man you love. You take responsibility for your happiness and make it work. Remember to love someone is one thing but learning to live with that person is the challenge. It means respecting the differences, understanding that before marriage you have expectations of your fiance’s behaviour, your expectations may not match reality. The success of a marriage is to understand the above point.

Home remedies for gastric pain Gas is a common problem among most of us. Common gastric conditions include gas pain and bloating , indigestion, and ulcers. When there is not enough acid in the stomach, the food sits there and remains undigested thus producing gas Dilshad Fayeza Haque Once you begin suffering from acidity too, what is the best way to alter the situation? Rush to a doctor? Instead of going through so much hassle let’s have a look on these simple yet effective home remedies. But if your symptoms are severe or long-lasting, seek medical guidance Yoghurt This is my personal favourite as this remedy works like magic. Here is a list of food that causes gas:

• Beans,

mushrooms, broccoli, cooked tomato, whole grains, asparagus, pears, peaches, apples, banana, apricots, prune and grape juices

• Potatoes,

corn, pasta, bagels, pretzels, and bread

• Carbonated

yoghurt after every meal prevents gas from forming inside your stomach. Soy products Many people lack the enzyme necessary to digest lactose which is why they experience gas, bloating, and stomach ache after consuming milk, cheese or other dairy-based foods. Soy-based milk, yogurt, and cheese, provide useful non-dairy alternatives. Warm water Warm water taken during indigestion is an instant pain-reliever. This will

give calm the stomach and the toxic condition causing the inflammation will also ease off. Black pepper It increases the hydrochloric acid secretion in the stomach and thus helps digestion. It is often taken with buttermilk when one suffers from indigestion, stomach acidity, and heaviness. Cloves Take a few pieces of clove directly when you suffer from acidity or irritability in the stomach. Clove oil also offers powerful counteraction against gas/bloating and reduces pain.

Ginger Ginger juice mixed with warm water cures bloating and flatulence. Ginger tea is also good. Or just pop in a few small pieces of ginger and chew on them. It is exceptionally good to treat hyper acidity. Gooseberry (Amoloki) Gooseberry is rich in fibre, controls acidity, and keeps abdominal discomfort at bay.

If you can’t help but have these foods, vegetables and fruits, try consuming these when your stomach is already full. Avoid having fried, warm, and extremely spicy or acidic food in an empty stomach.

Yoga

Massacring your abs There’s nothing quite as desirable as washboard abs and a seductively flat belly. Similarly, there’s only a few parts of our body that are just as hard to maintain. This week Avenue T focuses on a few yoga moves to strengthen your core and give you that flat stomach you have been craving for. Crunches and sit-ups can only take you so far, but a regular regime of a few of these yoga postures will transform your belly into the toned waistline that would look amazing in low rise jeans and muffin top tees. Try out these flat ab solutions for two weeks and have your body love you for it Natasha Rahman

The boat pose Sit on your yoga mat with your knees bent in front of you. Lean back slightly and make sure to tuck your tailbone under your spine. Breathe easily into this, contract your abs and extend both your legs outward. If you are a beginner keep your legs as close to the ground without letting your feet actually touch it. Remember to keep a flat back through out. You can lean back but always remember to keep your chest forward and back as flat as possible. For the more advanced, raise your legs up as high as possible without bending your knees and grab onto the inside of your knees or your ankles, relaxed breathing will make this pose much easier.

The plankarama Planks may look simple but it works up a sweat in no time and is an all around workout for your entire body. For streamline abs though, get down on all fours and start off in a push-up position with your wrists right below your shoulders and your knees off of the ground. Remember to position your body in a straight line. Lower your forearms and keep your elbows and palms flat on the ground. Keeping your toes curled, engage your abs by squeezing your stomach in and pulling your belly towards the spine. Focus on your stomach, your form and imagine you are a plank of wood, so make sure you are as straight as an arrow. Your body should

be positioned in a straight line from your heals to the back of your head. Hold this position for 60 seconds and remember to breathe. Repeat both these postures three times, 60 seconds each and let your abs curse your for this massacre.

Tantalise Recipe

Peanut butter hot chocolate

Photo: Big Stock

Fareeha Chowdhury is an avid food enthusiast, as well as the proprietor of Sugar Rush Cupcakery. She has studied at the French Culinary institute in Manhattan for courses in pastry techniques.

Ingredients (serves 1) • 1 cup milk • 1tbsp peanut butter (chunky or smooth, whichever you prefer) • 1tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 1/2tbsp sugar • 1tsp vanilla extract

It’s November already. Today on my way home, I realised some of the roads I was crossing were in the process of being adorned and draped with countless rows of little white fairy lights. This is always the first sign that winter has come to Dhaka, bringing all the festivities of the wedding season and the refreshing yet crisp chilly weather with it. We barely get to enjoy cool weather here in Dhaka and are so used to the humidity, we forget that tea or coffee are not the only hot drinks to serve at dinner parties on a cool December night. Today’s recipe is perfect to serve at a rooftop barbeque as a welcome drink, or an afterdinner dessert drink. It’s different in contrast to what people are used to which is normal tea, masala tea, or coffee Fareeha Chowdhury

Directions : Whisk milk, cocoa powder, vanilla and sugar, together in a small pot on the stove. Bring to a simmer and then add peanut butter, stirring well to get rid of clumps. Pour into your favourite mug and serve with whipped cream and salted peanuts.

This recipe could not get simpler. It’s a one pot recipe and you can multiply the ingredients to serve however many people you want. It’s the perfect cup of goodness to hold in your hands and warm you up on a cool night. It’s almost like drinking a Reese’s peanut butter cup.

Beautiful boilers You hated it when you were young , and then loved it when you grew older. You heard parodies that mocked its perfectly rotund structure, and laughed at jokes that reduced it to a sign of bad luck. Whether you hate it or love it, there will come a time when eggs are your one saviour when the fridge is empty of your favourite foods. Boiled, scrambled or fried, you cannot deny the versatility of the egg. This week Avenue T shows you how to boil your egg to perfection N Anita Amreen

Step 1 Put your eggs in a saucepan and add cold water to cover approximately an inch of it. By setting the pan on medium heat and wait for the water to come to a simmer. Once it starts, simmering, you should start your timer. Always make sure the water is only simmering and not boiling.

Step 2 Two minutes for soft boiled eggs The soft boiled egg is characterised by solid egg whites and a deliciously runny yolk. Gently crack open the side and serve hot. Four and a half minutes for medium boiled eggs Spending four and a half minutes boiling your eggs will give you a yolk that is solid and dark orange in colour.

Eight minutes for a hardboiled egg The hardboiled egg has a completely solid centre that is crumbly and light yellow in colour Step 3 Slice it up and mix in any mundane salad that lacks taste.

Pets

Home sweet home While keeping fish at home is comparatively easier than keeping other pets, bear in mind, that there is a necessity for some maintenance Tausif Sanzum

Would you like to live in a tiny room? Guess not. In a similar way, tiny fish bowls may seem easier to clean, but maintaining a bigger aquarium is always the better option. They will provide enough space for your fish to swim around and are also much easier to clean

Tip Filtrations systems The most important thing when keeping fish is to maintain proper filtration. Filters are very important. Without proper filtration, fish waste can poison the water in the tank. There are various filters available and you can choose one according to your aquarium’s size. Clean the filters every 2-3 weeks as that will help keep the water in the aquarium clean and for the complete cleaning session wait a bit longer. Cleaning your aquarium There are various ways to clean your aquarium. Every month you can take out water from the aquarium and replace it with clean water. However if you want to thoroughly clean the water

Do not overcrowd your aquarium. Not all fish get along hence, try to keep fishes of similar size you will have to take out the fish using a bowl and store them elsewhere for a few minutes. During this period rinse the gravel at the bottom of the tank thoroughly as a lot of dirt gets caught in it. Refill the entire tank with fresh water and pour your fishes back in. Monitor their food intake Fish can eat a lot but the amount of food they eat will translate into the amount

of waste they produce. Provide them with just enough food, for their survival, instead of over feeding them. Decoratie your aquarium Fish love to play and adding props to their home is always a good idea although while doing so, keep in mind not to overcrowd the aquarium.

Decor

A touch of light, a bit of glamour

Your home is not just a place made out of bricks and cement. It is your sanctuary, your retreat, and a part of you. The interior design should reflect your personality, be it trendy, romantic, or even gothic. None the less, regardless your personality, it goes without saying that candles leave a unique reflection on your home. Tausif Sanzum Candles are rather cost efficient in comparison to other types of decorative items yet, they add so much to your home’s interior. You can place them on television stands, desks, tables etc. You can place them on dining tables too. To further enhance the look, place a candle in the centre of a glass plate, add fruits or flowers surrounding the candle, to create a wonderful centrepiece. A majority of the space in your home is occupied by walls and if you ever get bored with decorating them with paintings or such, candle sconces add that extra panache. With the world becoming more ecofriendly and you want to partake in

saving resources then replacing electric lamps with candle lamps is a good option. Not only will you save electricity but you will add a distinct ambience to your home in the process. Be creative and try to make your candle holders/ stands with things around you – glass jars are very popular. However, candles do come with their set of disadvantages. With a little bit of tact and precautionary measures, you can use them anytime. However, always bear in mind to extinguish them as soon as they have served their purpose or when you are not around. Be very careful if you have toddlers and pets and keep it out of their reach at all times.

Tip Candles can always be opted for if you are on a low budget to glam up your home in creative ways
