Distinctions were made between the sounds of gospel, where the ones sung at the churches would be labelled as God’s music and the ones played at bars would be termed as the devil’s music. Even though lyrics with innuendo were first noticed in country and western in Jimmie Rodger’s “Pistol Packing Papa,” the blues musician embraced the playfulness of the sexually charged lyrics into their style of music.

The overlap of the two stars had commenced, R&B experienced its first collision with country and western.

The Rhythm & Blues (R&B), made for and by the African Americans, was the third and the final ingredient, alongside mainstream pop and country and western, that culminated in the coveted rock and roll.

In the early days of the music world, R&B was a very personal sound that belonged to the African Americans. During that period, there were separate charts maintained for the three different types of music. W C Handy (also known as the Father of the Blues) was one of the first to begin playing blues and on the other hand Bessie Smith (also known as The Empress of Blues) was one of the first to have ever sung blues. Again R&B had two sub-divisions, one being doo wop and the other gospel. They were primarily different singing styles. While doo wop featured acapellas (choral vocal style singing) which were mostly

A miniature bite

Sharing music has never been as easy and fun The line above has been given by the developers of nwplyng and they aren’t lying. Music is an integral part of our everyday lives. There are particular songs that provoke certain emotions and memorable moments.

And from time to time, the music we hear connects us to memories we’ve shared with others.

What makes this app easy to use is the moment you listen to a song that brings up a delightful thought, you’ll be able to share it with your friends through Twitter or Facebook. You can either explore songs or record the audio through its music recognition feature to bring up the correct information. Once you’ve chosen the song, you can add a comment, upload a picture, or attach a YouTube video. Too simple, too bland? Perhaps not entirely.

The fun part about the app is that once you’ve shared the music, you’ll be receiving points and the ability to level up. It’s very similar to apps like FourSquare, receiving badges and points earns you certain titles to a certain artist or album. In turn, this is also shared through your social networks. The user interface is as clean and minimalistic as many other apps have turned to. It’s very difficult to get lost in nwplyng. But what makes this app stand out entirely, is the sharing capability with your friends. For instance, there have been plenty of times where two friends are minding their business and all of a sudden a certain song plays on the radio. Immediately, the song brings back an experience both friends had gone through together. The connection made from that song can now be shared from wherever you are, thanks to nwplyng.

The only drawback to this app is its song database, which isn’t as vast as other music apps in the market. But that’s only because it still remains in its beginning stages and will update accordingly. Nwplyng is free to download on both iOS and Android devices.

The iPad Mini with retina display can rival the iPad Air’s high-resolution screen. There’s more than one reason why many desire the miniature version of the iPad. It’s been given a huge upgrade regarding its performance, boasting the impressive 64-bit A7 processor. And to top things off, the Wi-Fi, LTE, and the battery life have also improved.

When the first version of the iPad Mini was released, many had doubts and questioned why it was even made. But modern-day technology seems to have a parking space for any tablet size. Within the new iPad Mini’s 7.9 inch display, you will be able to see why this is something to brag about. Running a 2048x1526 pixel retina display, it stays up to par with the larger iPad. It is the exact resolution of the bigger brother. Now, you might be wondering is that all the new Mini has to offer? The major difference, believe it or

not, between the Mini and the Air is the size. It’s ultimately down to the user’s preference in size.

The main draw is its performance, it’s a huge leap over the last model and similar to the Air. You really cannot argue with what Apple has provided in the new Mini. The size can be a huge factor for the tech savvy. The entire experience from gaming, browsing, and reading, presents itself as best in class. This is definitely not for those on a budget but the fact remains, this is worth the purchase.

The design comes a bit heavier and thicker than its predecessor, but you could never feel or see the difference unless you pitted them together. The iPad Mini comes in two colours, space grey and a black slate model. The original 16GB model runs for $400,which is around Tk31,000, minus tax and other fees.

With its 2010 Impreza, Subaru has taken the shotgun approach to a more focused product. Where the first generation Impreza had a weird but a lovable look, the newest version rather seems a bit cliché. With more than a passing resemblance to the Mazda Axela, the 2010 Impreza is now dangerously close to losing its identity. Even then it still manages to spice things up considerably, with larger wheels and more body cladding to exile the bland; oddly, Subaru has opted to cut down on

the standard features to reduce weight.

On the plus side, the Impreza’s allwheel drive offers year-round exciting performance and adds plenty of nifty features like the heated side mirrors and windshield wiper de-fogger.

Subaru’s Impreza has featured a segment rebelling with the flat-4 boxer engine since its inception. Despite the fact that it is still a four-cylinder, the 1.5-liter engine gets an ample power of 110 HP and a substantial torque of 144 Nm. Equipped with electronic throttle control and i-Active (Subaru’s version of variable valve timing) the Impreza engine does a decent job in staying up-to-date with technology. Power is sent to all four wheels using Subaru’s Symmetrical AllWheel Drive system, which confines the

power being sent to wheels with little or no traction and redirect it to those that need it the most.

Subaru has undeniably stepped things up in terms of interior quality.

Almost every material used are of the highest grade, and the instrument cluster layout is simple, logical and borderline stylish. Gone are the flashy colours and cheap plastic bits, and additional options include a touchscreen navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, 6-disc/10-speaker stereo and a satellite radio. To make matters worse there is a long list of accessories including a powered subwoofer, sliding centre armrest, various cargo organisers and nets and a short shift kit for manual transmission models.

Stop frying your melanin!

Okay, so here’s the deal. Every visit to the salon is met with a rather innocent but loaded question of “do you also want a fair polish treatment?” which is also always met with a no. The lady at the counter looks at you quite disappointed and critically analysing your face says things like: “but you are so dark, don’t you want fair skin?” What can you possible say to that? “How dare you invade my personal space like this?” “Do you think everyone wants to look pasty like an albino clown?” “What is fair polish anyway?”

Well funny you ask, fair polish is the process of bleaching the life out of your skin. Meaning it temporarily fries the melanin in your epidermis. Harmless process you think, but think again.

Melanin is the good stuff that keeps us tropical dwellers, skin cancer free. So why on earth would you ever want to take that away from yourself just for the sake of vanity?

It’s an ingrained process. Centuries of invasion by the Persians, Moguls, and finally the British has given our people an inferiority complex. This is internalised and promoted through generations by patriarchy. Girls who are naturally light skinned tend to get all the attention in the family, while dark skinned ones are considered ordinary and ugly, even if they have the most beautiful features.

Logically speaking, that’s insane, but we

tend to do that a majority of the time.

Take a look in the mirror and think about how blessed you are to be alive and healthy. Be proud of who and what you are. Critically think about the pressure society places on you to be everything but yourself and learn to say “No.” Giving up the benefits of a naturally occurring phenomenon just so people find you attractive are not worth it. Putting yourself through a chemical bleaching process to become something you’re not is not worth it. So the next time you’re at the salon, resist the temptation to fry your skin. Be happy the way you are. God intended you to be this way.

A great way to soothe or prevent chapped skin is to moisturise. Petroleum jelly and mineral oil can help to lock in moisture. Oily skin requires moisturising as well. Just look for noncomedogenic products that won’t clog pores.

Lips dry out easily as they do not oil glands. Apply lip balms rich in butter with an SPF 15 or more to have smooth, sun-protected

Long, steamy showers are very soothing and at the same time very good at dehydrating our skin. Yes, you have read that right. Hot water removes natural oils quicker than cold water. Therefore, take shorter showers and also use lightly scented or unscented mild soaps to lock your skin’s essential oils.

For example, encourage her to engage in outdoor activities such as swimming or riding a bicycle. She may not enjoy them initially but if and when she masters them, she will develop a sense of pride in her accomplishments. While it may be difficult to convince your husband that his fears are misplaced, you should impress upon him the need to support you in your desire to foster your daughter’s creativity, as well as encouraging her activities himself.

Forearm plank madness: Position yourself in a push up position and keep the top of your head aligned with your heels in a straight line. Drop your elbow slowly to the floor, so its

Now you are in the forearm plank position. Raise one leg slightly off the ground and hold it there for 15 seconds. Repeat on the other side. Now hold the forearm plank for 30 seconds without raising either of your legs.

Tip : As you are hovering off the mat, the forearm plank will also work on your abs and core. The forearm plank will target your entire arm and melt fat away at the same time giving your arms the tone-up it needs

The triceps dip quickie: Sit on your exercise mat with your legs kept straight in front of you. Place your hands at shoulder lengths distance on the ground and make sure to keep your wrist and your shoulders aligned in one straight line. Slide your hips off the floor using the muscles of your arms, bending and straightening the arms at the elbow.

Your body won’t be touching the ground the whole time that you are performing this workout. Keep hovering slightly off

of the ground and bend and straighten your arms as quickly as possible for 30 seconds.

Tip: Your elbow and arms are the focal parts that should be doing most of the moving and not your stomach. 30 seconds may seem like a short time, but if you are doing this quickly, this should feel like a decade. If this seems easy, go at it for 60 seconds

Malai chicken curry Despite the sinful feel to its name, the Malai Chicken curry is a deliciously creamy recipe that is made without any oil or ghee. These chicken drumsticks are cooked to a velvety consistency using the richness of cream, the luscious touch of milk, and the soft flavour of almonds.

Cooking time 1 Hour 10 Minutes Ingredients For the gravy: • 1 cup cream • 3 green chillies, chopped • 1 onion, chopped • 2 1/2 cup milk • 1tsp green cardamom powder • 1tsp chopped ginger • 2tbsp chopped coriander leaves • 1/2tsp dry ginger powder • 1tsp white pepper powder • 1tsp fenugreek (methi) • 2tsp garam masala • A pinch of saffron • 2tsp chopped almonds • Salt, to taste

For the marinade • 5 chicken drumsticks • 1tsp ginger paste • 1tsp garlic paste • 2tsp white pepper powder For the garam masala • 1 black cardamom • 6-8 green cardamoms • 1 piece mace • 2tsp cumin seeds • 4-5 cloves • 1 cinnamon • 4-5 black peppercorns • 6-7 dried rose petals

Directions 1. Marinade the drumsticks in ginger, garlic, and white pepper for forty minutes. Using a knife, make incisions in the chicken.

2. Meanwhile, dry roast the garam masala, making sure not to burn them. Grind the garam masala using a grinder or a mortar and pestle.

3. Heat a large pan and add the cream. When it is slightly heated, add the onions and green chillies until the onions are soft.

4. Add the milk and the marinated chicken, mixing it all well.

5. Add the green cardamom powder, the chopped ginger, dry ginger powder, coriander leaves, white pepper powder, the roasted garam masala, the fenugreek, and a pinch of saffron. Allow the mixture to simmer.

6. Saute the mix, allowing the chicken to cook. This should take around seven to 12 minutes. Add salt to taste.

Garnish with chopped almonds and serve hot.
