Dialogue drama back on track with Biswal's visit BNP sends letters to diplomatic missions The drama over dialogue between Awami League and BNP has unfolded again after a short interval just ahead of the Dhaka visit of US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal. Biswal arrived in the capital early afternoon yesterday and she is scheduled to meet Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia this evening. She is also expected to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today. BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday claimed that he had made a phone call to AL General Secretary but failed to reach him. The BNP leader’s claim courted controversy as the same day AL general secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Asharful Islam firmly denied getting any phone call from Fakhrul. Amid claims and counterclaims leaders of both the major parties have in fact expressed their desires again to hold dialogue over the last couple of days to end the prevailing political crisis centring the polls-time cabinet. Interestingly, much the same way a positive intent to hold dialogue was expressed by the leaders of both major

parties when United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez Taranco held a series of meetings on May 14 with various political parties including Awami League and BNP to create a favourable atmosphere for dialogue. Meanwhile, Pankaj Saran, Indian high commissioner to Dhaka, told reporters yesterday that they had been in discussion on the developing political situation in Bangladesh with different

Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Pankaj Saran yesterday said they were discussing Bangladesh political situation with other countries including the USA. “I can say definitely that we are discussing the situation in Bangladesh with different countries who have an interest in peace and stability in Bangladesh. So we have discussed these issues with the American government,” Saran said. When asked about Indian media reports on a meeting between US President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in which they discussed issues relating to Bangladesh, he did not make any comment on the media report. “If you want confirmation on whether we have discussed with America, yes we have,” he told reporters while replying to a question after inaugurating the Dharmarajika dining hall-cum-library building at the Basabo Buddhist monastery in the capital yesterday. He did not elaborate as to what level or with whom the discussions took place. “I don’t want to go into detail about what level and with whom [the discussion took place].” Indian government news agency PTI on November 8 published a news report stating that the US president had instructed his officials to ramp up consultation with Indian officials as he took the concern raised by the Indian prime minister seriously during a meeting at the White House.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 3

idle leaving the nation in the labyrinth. “How will the government hand over power unless the elections take place? The only way we have to come to power is by defeating [the other parties] through polls,” he said. The former autocrat claimed that the people wanted a “relief” from Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, who both did not recognise the citizens as “human beings.” “We want the country to be free… We will free the people by winning the fight of ballot,” he said. Ershad said people would term him a “traitor” if his party took part in the polls with the Awami League-led grand alliance. “On the other hand, an unconstitutional government will come to power if there is no election. We are facing a dual problem,” said the Jatiya Party chairman.

BNP has alleged that a conspiracy is being hatched against the party’s Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman to convict him in a money laundering case. “There is no end to the government’s conspiracy against the BNP. A verdict will be delivered against Tarique Rahman in a false case on Sunday [today]. We do not know what will be the verdict. But we can understand that he will be convicted upon the government’s order,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting secretary general of the party, said at a discussion at the National Press Club yesterday. A Dhaka court is set to deliver verdict today in a money laundering case against opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s eldest son Tarique Rahman and his close friend Giasuddin Al Mamun. Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad, who had previously announced on several occasions of boycotting the upcoming polls without the BNP’s participation, has now said the elections were the only way of power transfer, hinting his desire to take part in the 10th parliamentary elections. While addressing the council of his party’s youth front Jubo Sanghati in Dhaka yesterday, Ershad said his party was in a “dilemma” on whether to contest or boycott the polls. Claiming himself to be the country’s most popular leader, the former military dictator said: “What will I do with this popularity unless utilised? I can win the polls by exploiting the popularity. Using this popularity in the polls, I can make the tortured-people free.” Saying the nation was now directionless, Ershad said: “I cannot sit
