Another spell of hartal on cards n Mohammad Al-Masum Molla Apart from a routine press briefing by the acting secretary general at the end of the day, no senior leader of the main opposition BNP or its allies turned up on the streets during the 60-hour hartal that ended last evening. The previous spell of 60-hour hartal on October 27-29 was no different. But this has not stopped the 18-party opposition alliance from mulling over another spell of countrywide hartal next week to further press home their demand for the upcoming polls to be

Massive reshuffle, promotion spree likely in bureaucracy n Mohosinul Karim The civil administration is likely to face a massive reshuffle in some important posts and a new promotion spree at the end of the present government before the interim polls-time administration takes control. The public administration ministry has already begun work on reshuffling the administration and the further promotion of officers who were left out during the last wave of promotions under this government. Sources in the ministry told the Dhaka Tribune that some of the more powerful high officials in different ministries and divisions, who have been in the same office for three years, will be transferred before the election schedule is announced. “The ministry was working towards promoting some joint secretaries to additional secretaries, deputy secretaries to joint secretaries and senior assistant

The meeting of SSB will continue in the next few days to finalise the proposal of promoting deputy secretaries to joint secretaries and senior assistant secretaries to deputy secretaries,” a deputy secretary of the public administration ministry confirmed. ministration, Senior Public Administration Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikdar denied any possibility of a large number of transfers, similar to what had happened before the last government left power, and a promotion spree before the election. “Some of the officials who have been serving in an office for two or three years will be replaced before the interim government takes charge, as per the policy of the ministry. It is a routine work. But there is no possibility of massive reshuffle in the civil administration,” he said. “The interim government will take charge after the Election Commission announces the election schedule. The public administration ministry and all officials and employees related with election will be placed under the commission. If they need any reshuffling, the ministry will execute it with the suggestion of the commission,” he added.
