Jonaki's Headquarters Hey friends, Have you noticed the weather getting colder? That’s right. Winter is knocking on the door.

As the weather starts to change, the flu bugs come out, so make sure you’re dressed warmly. You’ll also notice that there are more mosquitoes out than usual. This is because mosquitoes are most active in winter in Bangladesh.

Other than being pesky insects that bite, they also carry germs that cause malaria and dengue, so when you’re sleeping at night, use a mosquito net, and you’re safe.

Lamia Lamia grew up in the slums of Korail.

Having very little of everything, she barely got the chance that others are rightful of; education, healthy environment to live in, proper hygiene and a cheerful childhood.

Lamia hopes to go to school and when she grows up she wants to take her parents all around the world. She says, that even though her parents want all the happiness that there is for her, they are struggling to make ends meet. Even though she is very young, Lamia is a perfect example of how a child should be; responsible and caring towards her parents, even though they can barely afford to buy her a nice toy.

Zakir Zakir wants to be a pilot when he grows up. Determined in his studies, Zakir - a brilliant student of JAAGO Foundation, is determined to be what he wants to be when he grows up. “Just because I was born in poverty, I wont let anything get in the way of my dreams,” says Zakir. His love for flying started at a very early age. From when he was a toddler, he was fascinated by airplanes and his love for height grew along with his age. Zakir adds “ Hadn’t I been fortunate enough and gotten proper education, perhaps I would never have been able to believe in my dream - to fly all around the world.” Dreams are meant to be believed in and your dreams can only come true if you have faith in them. After all, as a famous quote states, life is nothing but a one-winged bird if you let your dreams die.

A great personality and a wonderful person Shariful Anwar is a favourite among all his students. A teacher of Business Studies, Anwar is a part time teacher for classes 9-12 in SFX Greenherald and Sunnydale schools. Anwar is also the Debate Expert for the Cantonment Educational Board. It is not only his exceptional teaching skills that make Anwar a special teacher. It is his amiable and easy approach that made him a favourite amongst his students.

“He is inspirational and never fails to motivate his students in working harder

for their grades,” says Sharon, an A level student from SFX Greenherald.” He always helps us when we face difficulties in the subject.” When asked about his approach to naughty students in class, Anwar says “Punishment is never an option. I never punish students who are naughty or are not following the class. Instead I divert those students by giving them responsibilities, like making them class captains or counselling them; so that they focus more on studies than on pranks.” sama e deen

horses that live in the sea Seahorses are tiny fishes that live in the oceans and seas. They are named after the shape of their heads, which looks exactly like the head of a horse.

• The scientific name for dwarf seahorses is Hippocampus zosterae.

• Seahorses eat tiny organisms called planktons, sucking in through their tube-like snout.

They do not have a stomach, so food passes through their bodies very quickly, and they need to eat constantly.

• There are at least 25 species found in tropical and temperate coastal waters around the world, swimming upright among seaweed and other plants.

• Although they are a breed of fish, seahorses are not great swimmers. In fact, they prefer to rest in one area, sometimes holding on to the same coral or seaweed for days. They beat their fins very quickly, up to 50 times a second, but they do not move quickly. They are, however, able to move up, down, forward or backward.

• Seahorses can move their eyes independently of each other, helpful when keeping an eye out for predators.

• Male seahorses give birth. A female seahorse lays dozens, sometimes hundreds, of eggs in a pouch on the male seahorse’s abdomen. Called a brood pouch, it resembles a kangaroo’s pouch for carrying young. faizah aziz

After my cat had five kittens, I was getting ready to give them away to my friends. Three kittens were already taken from me and now I was left with two- a black and white kitten named Tofu, and a black cat named Rabbit. He got his name because he used to hop around like a bunny, when he was a kitten. Rabbit has always been attached to me. When all the kittens would sleep near my head at night, he would be the only one that would sleep on my face. There came a time when I was supposed to give away Tofu and Rabbit, but I couldn’t continue to do so because everyone got attached to both the kittens, especially Rabbit.

He has a rather unusual way of mewing, and he shows affection to us by grazing his head against our legs.

When he gets excited, he grabs one of my sandals and starts chewing on it. If I’m upset, he sits near me and grazes his

head against my arm. When my mother calls me by my name, he thinks she’s calling him, and he would run out of the room. I adore this cat to bits, and I’m glad I didn’t give him away.

What You Do 1. Mix together corn starch, salt, sugar, and water into a pot. Cook over low heat for about 10 min, stirring constantly. You should get an adult to do this for you!

2. The mixture will start thin, but it’ll eventually thicken. When it does,

take the pot off of the stove and let the mixture cool off.

Once it’s cool, divide it into small containers (small jars or leftover containers work as well) and add a few drops of food colouring to each. Voila! It’s time to paint.

What You Need • 1/4 cup corn starch • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 1/2 tablespoon sugar • 1 cup cold water • Different food colouring

2. Tap gently on each of the glasses.

What sort of sound is created?

Put the water in the jug and mix in the food colouring.

4. Carefully pour the water into the glasses, making sure there is a different level of water in each glass.

5. Tap the glasses again. What sort of noise do they make now? Do

all of the glasses make the same sound now?

6. Try and vary the tones by changing the amounts of water.
