Hasina believes army will keep supporting her government

AL to discuss Hanif issue today kar Ali Manik and n Julfi Muhammad Zahidul Islam Ruling Awami League leader Mahabub-Ul-Alam Hanif who got wide exposure during the party’s present tenure has become an issue for discussion within the party as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently asked him to resign as PM’s special assistant. Hasina asked him to resign at a meeting with the party’s grassroots leaders from Kushtia on Wednesday, but Hanif has not resigned yet and is waiting to talk to the prime minister. A few top central Awami League leaders told the Dhaka Tribune that Hanif’s issue is likely to be discussed in the party’s Central Working Committee meeting today. Hanif was little known in national politics. He got exposure in the past four and a half years following his appointment as the prime minister’s special assistant and also for his role as the

There is the government, the constitution and democracy in the country. The country will be run as per the constitution,” Communications Minister Obaidul Quader said.

We have received your support in rendering services to the people, and it is my firm belief that it will continue always “The prime minister will soon inform the nation about this,” he said while addressing a function at Paduar Bazar in Comilla to mark the inauguration of five bridges on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in the district, according to UNB. The prime minister while addressing a darbar (meet) of Bangladesh Army at the Chittagong Cantonment said: “As the head of government, I have given the army whatever it was possible in my capacity. I am reiterating my firm commitment to give whatever necessary in future for a modern army.” Mentioning that her government always wanted to run the country as servant of the people rather than ruler, the

people, and it is my firm belief that it will continue always.” The statements came amid fear of political confrontation as the opposition BNP is planning to gather supporters on the streets, saying Hasina’s government should not continue after October 24. As per the constitution, the national election will have to be held before January 25 when the tenure of the government will expire. Though the Awami League-led government earlier said parliament would not be in session after October 24, now it plans to extend the sittings “to counter the opposition.” Meanwhile, the main opposition BNP-led 18-party alliance has threatened to wage tougher movement against the government with like-minded parties and professional bodies after October 24 to compel the government to introduce a non-partisan interim government to oversee the next parliamentary polls. The opposition has already announced a rally for October 25 in the city while the ruling Awami League declared a counter rally for the same day. Obaidul Quader said the Awami League would face the opposition’s programmes politically. At the Chittagong Cantonment yesterday, the prime minister said: “I want to firmly say that necessary reforms and restructuring at various levels of Bangladesh Army will continue in future.”  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

According to DSCC, the toll collection rate for a single trip over the flyover is Tk150 for a six-wheeler truck, Tk200 for a trailer, Tk100 for a four-wheeler truck, Tk150 for a bus, Tk100 for a minibus, Tk75 for a pickup van, Tk50 for a microbus, Tk40 for a jeep, Tk35 for a car, Tk10 for an auto-rickshaw and Tk5 for a motorbike. However, drivers and locals alleged that staff from Orion Infrastructure Ltd yesterday were charging Tk260 for six-wheeler trucks, Tk173 for four-wheeler trucks, Tk375 for trailers,

Sohag Gazi, the Tigers’ frontline off-spinner let his bat do the talking yesterday as he tipped Bangladesh over the 500-run mark in their first innings of the first Test against the New Zealand. Gazi, coming in at number eight, was unbeaten on 23 overnight – and into the fourth day of the match, he carefully crafted his maiden hundred on a placid pitch that offered little or no assistance to the bowlers. Playing sensibly with a straight bat, he made batting look easy and shepherded the tail like a frontline batsman, scoring an unbeaten 101 off 161 deliveries. The Barisal lad, standing just in

A scuffle erupted between transport drivers and Mayor Mohammad Hanif flyover authorities following bargaining over toll collection, a day after the inauguration of the flyover. Around 11am, the two parties engaged in arguments that eventually led to an hour-long suspension of vehicular movement on the flyover. The drivers raised allegations that the authorities were collecting tolls at a higher rate than the rate mentioned in the chart prepared by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Though vehicular movement re-

sumed around 12pm, collection of tolls will remain suspended until the authorised company makes a decision regarding the toll, police sources said. When contacted, Tapan Chandra Saha, officer-in-charge of Wari police station, said the scuffle resulted in traffic congestion in the area that compelled the flyover authorities to release vehicles without collecting any toll. Initially, two entrances- one in Jatrabari and the other in Gulistan- were opened to traffic on Thursday after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the 11.8km long flyover in the afternoon. She paid a Tk50 toll to use the flyover. The entire area is under CCTV sur-
