RMG SOURCING

Buyers still prefer Bangladesh despite disasters n Ibrahim Hossain Ovi Apparel manufacturers and buyers have said recent factory disasters did not affect the sourcing of readymade garment products from Bangladesh. Talking to the Dhaka Tribune at the ongoing 24th Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition (Batexpo)-2013, Enzo De Renzo, manager (import) of European retailers CAPRI and Alcott, said: “We [buyers] are not leaving Bangladesh and going to other countries for sourcing RMG products.” Commenting on foreign companies’ reaction to the disasters at Rana Plaza and Tazreen Fashion, he said the percentage of disasters was very low as only two or three among the large number of RMG factories had witnessed disasters. Admitting that Bangladesh was still very strong in the RGM sector because of comparatively low prices and low wages of workers, Renzo however suggested that Bangladesh needed to

retrofit the factories and ensure fullfledged compliance to rules for averting accidents. Also present at the Batexpo, Senior Manager (marketing) of Beximco Textile Mohammad Delwar Hossain said the disasters in the readymade garments (RMG) sector did not cause downtrends for sourcing of RMG products from Bangladesh. Saying the suspension of generalised system of preferences (GSP) was also unable to have a negative impact on the sector, Hossain argued that owners would have had to shut down factories and sack labourers if there was a fall in foreign orders. The buyers express concerns after the occurrence of any incident, but do not stop their orders as they are able to buy products from Bangladesh at comparatively lower prices, he noted. currently preparing a probe report on the alleged Tk10m bribe taken by former Detective Branch deputy commissioner Mollah Nazrul Islam from a businessman by making a death threat.

Main opposition party BNP has apparently taken a page out of the ruling Awami League’s book to strengthen the movement for reinstating the caretaker government system after Eid-ul-Azha, especially targeting its October 25 rally. The BNP wants to engage political parties that are not in the opposition 18-party alliance, and the like-minded professional bodies to strengthen the movement. Party insiders said the plan was not to form an alliance but to bring all the forces outside the ruling cartel to a common platform and exert pressure on the government together. In 2006, the Awami League, then in opposition, took a similar strategy by amassing all the forums, including the professionals, outside the then ruling four-party alliance to a single platform. The forums that stood by the Awami League then also included some with whom the party’s political ideologies did not quite match. BNP leaders believe that the small

parties may not have huge vote banks, but some individuals in those parties have the charisma to put pressure on the ruling party. To make the mission successful, the main opposition party has been contacting Bikalpadhara Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Rob), Krishak Sramik Janata League, Gonoforum, and some other parties. Bikalpadhara President Badruddoza Chowdhury yesterday said his party, Krishak Sramik Janata League and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Rob) had already united for the sake of building up a greater unity to resist any election without non-party caretaker government.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Nasir Hossain (46) and Sohag Gazi (28 not out) frustrated the Black Caps further with a 70-run stand for the seventh wicket. Mominul fell just 19 runs short of becoming only the second Bangladesh batsmen after Rahim to score a Test double-century. The skipper Rahim hit 200 against Sri Lanka in Galle in March this year. “I am disappointed that I could not get to 200, because I don’t know when I will get another chance,” Mominul said. l

Sexual abuse of women takes an alarming form n Muktasree Chakma Sathi While the International Day of the Girl Child was observed worldwide with a focus on “Innovating for Girls’ Education” yesterday, a number of girls in Bangladesh are being compelled to drop out from schools to escape sexual harassment at present day. Figures released by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) reveal that 2,538 incidents of girls being harassed on streets on their way to schools took place from 2008 to 2012. 71 girls took their own lives as a direct result of such harassments. This year, the International Day of the Girl Child had been observed with a view to embrace “new ways to overcome barriers that keep girls out of school and keeping girls safe as they walk to and from school.” Experts state that situation of the girls are much worse in reality than showed in the reports. Women Rights Activist Khushi Kabir said: “The actual number of incidents of

sexual harassment would be much higher as reports of the human rights organisations accommodate only the number of cases that have been reported.” This reporter met two victims of sexual harassment who did not file any report until they were physically hurt by their stalkers last month.
