Half Moon Run A look at their latest album ‘Dark Eyes’

“We’re the Millers” teams up a drug dealer, a stripper, a runaway girl and an 18-year-old “virgin” boy to pose as a family to get back money from a drug lord. A fresh premise coupled with the star power of Jennifer Aniston makes this a perfect getaway movie for the weekend.

Half Moon Run is an indie rock band from Canada. The trio consists of Devon Portielje (main vocalist, guitarist and occasional drummer,) Conner Molander (backing vocalist and guitarist) and Dylan Phillips (backing vocalist, percussionist and keyboardist.)

Inspired by both classic and modern composers, the members put together complex arrangements of music that make them both mesmerising to watch as they shuffle between instruments and striking to listen to.

The band’s latest release, a debut album called “Dark Eyes”, does a beautiful job of incorporating folk, rock and pop indie with just a hint of electronica.

Half Moon Run’s music is all about the hooks, and the catchy nature of their music often leaves a long-lasting taste.

The captivating intros and bridges often build up to a somewhat moody chorus that leads to short bursts of jamming during the interludes.

The musical foundations are usually extremely atmospheric and, when added to the delicate guitar/piano lines and melodious vocal harmonies, result in a unique and memorable concoction of music you would want to listen to on repeat.

Though most of the album’s songs can be enjoyed as just singles, Dark Eyes is best experienced as a whole. A great deal of the experience lies in the inconsistent mood of the tracks. The transition from one track to the other

makes you go through an array of emotions that feels just right.

All in all, Half Moon Run has a very original taste in music that easily attracts a variety of audiences, and Dark Eyes has a very strong and deliberate feel to its music. The album is definitely worth checking out, especially for fans of the genre.

Most of us heard about the movie “The Help,” but it’s always better to read the book that a movie is adapted from. Mainly the story of Skeeter Phelan, “The Help” is about a white girl from a rich family who tries to narrate the stories of black maids who raise the kids in white people’s homes.

It’s as if Instagram and Pinterest decided to get hitched and gave birth to an inspirational baby

By Mahmood Hossain We Heart It, in a sense, is a very similar app to the popular ones of the bunch.

Nowadays, there’s an application for almost every aspect of life and a platform to share every detail. We Heart It serves as an inspirational hub in which users from all over the world upload and share images that motivate them, pictures that serve to inspire others.

While the app seems to have a feminine touch, with the pink heart and hordes of female related images at the start of the app, that shouldn’t deter you from testing it out. Just like any other social networking app, this also gives you the choice of following other users and categorising. You can tag away all you want while exploring each term, which results in more related images. Searching for the pictures you want is a standard option that can drive you away from the non-masculine images. However, for women, this will be a joy to use.

You’re probably thinking: “Oh, God. Not another one of these.” Maybe you won’t be too far from the truth, but as mentioned, this caters to a certain market. It’s designed to hold and present all that is positive. It’s easy to use, and really easy to understand. If you’re already familiar with apps like Instagram and Pinterest, this should be a cinch. If you want to upload or “create” your own image, you can swipe from the left to bring out the options and categories. Again, none of the procedures should seem foreign to regular smartphone users. You will have to create an account though (username and password,) but that’s free, just like the app itself.

This app can be downloaded for free on both the Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store.

For quite some time now, the MacBook Air has been the reigning king in its class.

A QUIRKY LITTLE THING

Like most people on the street, your first impression of the car might be: “What is that hideous looking thing? And why is it so small?” Well, to be honest, the car isn’t half as bad as it looks By Tahsin Momin First of all, the Daihatsu Copen is one of the strangest car breeds ever designed in Japan. That being said, it makes for a damn good drive. Yes, it has a puny body and a little 660CC turbo charged engine that produces only 70BHP, but the short wheelbase and FF layout make it a really fun car to throw into corners. Even though it will understeer in most cases, that’s not the main bugbear. The main worry is when you’re harsh with the steering and attempt to hammer the car into a corner, as the lack of engine power leads to a slow

exit out of the corner. On the other hand, making this car behave is very simple; be gentle on the steering and it becomes completely docile. Try carving the corners instead of cutting them.

This car somewhat reminds people of their first car with its underpowered FF layout, the type that won’t kill you even if you go over the limit. It has a pretty decent interior, but the best part is that it’s a convertible. Have you ever heard of a hardtop convertible in this price range? Think of it as a shrunken version of a Mazda MX-5. As much as

you would love to appreciate it with a bigger engine and a RWD layout, that would take the car into a higher tax bracket. And to make matters worse, the shorter wheelbase of the Copen would make it twitchy and dangerous to drive.

Overall, the Copen is a bit too pricey for a car of its size, but if you are a proper driver and fancy cruising down the empty roads in an open top while saving fuel, then you’ll get around to loving this little gem that Daihatsu has to offer.

ambitions Mehruz Chowdhury

You can easily reach your goal if you’re passionate and deserving towards your aim. Mehruz Chowdhury, an aspiring menswear designer, is solid proof of this, and he talks to Avenue T about his dream to change the fashion industry

1 Tell us about yourself.

I wouldn’t call myself a fashion designer yet, as I strongly believe being one requires a great deal of knowledge and skill, but I am an aspiring menswear designer. I’ve always been interested in fashion, but never thought I’d end up choosing it as my profession.

After graduating from school, I studied business in Australia (Deakin University), where I ended up switching majors three times! Though I graduated with flying colours, I realised I held no passion for any of the majors I had studied.

However, I was too afraid to choose fashion as my career path, since in Bangladesh fashion designers are not held in high esteem.

When I first told my friends and family I wanted to be a fashion designer, most responses were around these lines: “Dude, bored aunties do stuff like that!” or “This profession is for dumb girls who can’t get into proper universities but have rich daddies to open boutiques for them. Why on Earth would you, being a MAN with a business degree, study that?” or “Why do you need to study fashion design to be a designer? Just copy the designs off the internet and make them at a much lower price here!”

Fortunately, I had a small number of friends who believed in me and thought I had everything it took to pursue a career in fashion. With their support, I decided to enroll myself in Raffles Institute of Higher Education in Dhaka to learn the very basics of fashion design before applying to schools in Europe. I studied in Raffles for a year, and with the help of the most amazing lecturers I have ever met in my life, I started working on my college applications to schools in Milan and London. The applications require a portfolio portraying a mini collection of personal fashion work, and that was how I created my first menswear project “0.1,” which helped me get accepted into the Menswear programme of London College of Fashion in the UK.

3 What difficulties did you face while creating this collection?

There were many limitations to creating the collection. Research for primary inspiration is crucial for designers.

Sadly, there aren’t many resources for fashion research in Bangladesh. We don’t have any fashion exhibitions or any mediums where fashion work can be viewed and appreciated. I had to rely completely on the internet for my research. I spent months figuring out what elements of Grand Prix would go into the designs, how differently I could use the elements, and how practical they would look once the designs were established.

I had to draw over a 100 looks before I selected the final seven. One of the major obstacles I encountered was getting the exact materials I decided on during my design development stage.

I had to travel to a factory in Gazipur to get Jersey-knit cotton, Sadarghat to get nylon, trims and Velcro, Hazaribagh to order leather and Islampur to get cotton. Once I had everything, the production was carried out smoothly.

We have highly skilled tailors who can perform fantastic jobs if guided properly.

2 Tell us about your mini-collection.

What was your inspiration?

“0.1” is a small menswear collection of seven looks for the Fall/Winter of 2013.

The collection consists of sports jackets, parkas, coats, shirts, full-sleeved shirts, T-shirts and trousers. My inspiration for this collection came from racing suits worn by racers in Grand Prix auto-racing.

I took out the protective and functional elements seen in race suits and applied them to everyday garments worn by men.

My collection naturally turned out to be very sporty and appealing to the youth, although I also wanted the garments to be as classic and timeless as possible. My inspiration was not too obvious in the designs, and I didn’t do anything too drastic in terms of shapes and structure of the garments. Rather than focusing on the shapes, I gave most of my attention to the details, making them as similar to Grand Prix outfits as possible.

I used a lot of drawstrings, top-stitches, elastic cuffs, metal zippers, Velcro openings, decorative shoulder patches, diamond stitches and everything that may remind you of the race suits worn by the Grand Prix racers. I didn’t want to create something that would look hideous next year. I wished to create a minimalistic collection that fashionable men with an eye for details would consider as an investment for their wardrobe.

4 What do you want to do in the future?

After completing the Menswear programme in London College of Fashion, I want to work in an international fashion house where I can hone my skills and learn about the industry upfront. I also want to work my way up and perhaps become head designer. Ultimately, I want to have my own label of menswear clothing, but I feel a few years of work experience under my belt will help before I start calling my own shots.

5 What are your favourite fashion designers and fashion houses?

My favourite fashion designers are Raf Simons (creative director of Christian Dior,) Alexander Wang (creative director of Balenciaga,) Stefano Pilati (head designer of Ermenegildo Zegna,) John Paul Gaultier and Maison Martin Margiela. I also look forward to the collections of Tom Ford, Salvatore Ferragamo and Prada every year.

Redefining ourselves As children, our parents and elders always made us aware of the distinction between good and evil. Lying is bad, stealing is evil, and speaking back to adults is bad manners

Lying becomes acceptable in certain conditions, speaking back to adults who interfere in our “personal” lives becomes our birth right, and stealing from someone who earns more or is in a better position than us becomes justifiable. There is always a dilemma of what is the right thing

to do and we are continuously at war with our conscience.

There is an old saying that you are the best judge of yourself. When a particular act requires justification from your conscience, that’s a clear sign you’re doing something wrong.

Life has become so fast that we tend to ignore people, though it might be unconsciously. Somehow that affects

our rapport with the people around us. Even if we realise it, a lot of times we tend to ignore it by justifying to our conscience that we are so much in a rat race that we cannot pay attention to everyone.

Next time you ask your friend or colleague to do something for you, remember to give her or him a compliment once it’s done. You will

notice she or he will do a better job next time. Learn how to be genuine without being blunt. The way you handle situations reflects your persona, so inspire people around you instead of terrorising them. Allow everyone to share their views regardless of whether you agree. Feel good about doing good, and make your life simpler.

I went in for a checkup as usual, and lay down for another ultrasound.

The doc began pressing the funny, blunt stick over my belly, which was filled with water I had just gulped down for the best results.

But this time, something different happened. The doc turned the monitor and asked: “There, you see the heartbeat?”

My husband and I stared at the wiggly lines going up and down on the screen, and at that instant we heard the doc murmuring: “Why don’t we hear a heartbeat? We should be able to hear it as well.” I looked at him blankly, hoping that was not a bad sign. Then, he realised the speakers were off and turned them on. Within split seconds, we

could hear the rushing heartbeat echoing through our ears, and it was the best sound we ever heard.

I felt like jumping with joy, but that was not a viable option.

Hubby and I left the office with a happy, jittery feeling. All I could think about was the baby’s heartbeat.

Such a tiny thing was beating inside me. It was the first real sense I had as a mother.

I touched my tummy every now and then, hoping I’d be able to hear the heartbeat from outside (which I knew was not possible,

but there’s nothing wrong with imagining good things!) As time passed, I kept track of all my baby’s growth and development, and had new experiences throughout the months.

From bold striped polo shirts to the inner linings of trousers, this detailed trend has become quite popular with most labels. The tricolours can also be found in casual and semiformal fabric belts, which are perfect for colour blocking. A solid white polo or casual shirt paired with navy trousers will do well with a belt of that style a wristwatch? Check. Boxers? You bet.

There’s a touch of sport with elegance to this favourable design.

This trend is not only famous in American or European brands.

You’ll find it right here at home in all the major outlets. Since it’s not as dominant here as it is in the international scene, make sure to keep a lookout out for items that do sport this tricolour touch.

Q: I’m finding it very difficult to wear a suit every day to the office in this hot weather.

Is there an appropriate alternative for office wear?

A: There shouldn’t be a problem wearing a suit to the office in the first place. You should be comfortable in an air conditioned office, right?

Regardless, you can easily opt for a waistcoat. You’ll still look buttoned up and classy, if wearing just a tie and shirt is out of the question. If you have a three-piece suit, it should be easier to put on the waistcoat and leave the suit jacket at home. This way your arms and armpits will get some breathing room. Remember to mix things up. The waistcoat doesn’t necessarily have to be from the same suit or outfit. You can also buy standalone waistcoats with different designs, although getting them made would be your best bet.

In Fashion

Red, white and blue go so well together that you can’t go wrong sticking to these colours. However, keep in mind that too much patriotism can be an eyesore. In other words, if you have one tricoloured item, it should be the only one in your look, and if one item doesn’t suit you, there are many more.

A: If you want to follow the “rules,” it’s perfectly fine. Sure, the socks should match the trousers, but keep in mind that’s not the end of it. These basics steps are only a guideline to help you with your style. It becomes too much of a uniform if you keep at this route. The entire process is about evolving and advancing towards your personal style. There is always something that will set you apart from everyone else. The socks do not need to match your trousers. Black trousers don’t always mean black socks, nor do grey trousers always mean grey socks. As long as there is a clear and flattering contrast between the two, you are in a good position.

Q: I am getting married soon and I'm afraid of getting my make-up done at a beauty salon. I’ve seen some of my friends resemble ghosts on their big day due to make-up that made them appear too white. How can I avoid this?

A: The total transformation of one's face can indeed produce frightening results. If you want to avoid taking a risk on your big day, your best bet would be to do your own makeup. This will only work if you are confident enough in your own skills.

You can even ask a friend who knows how to wield her beauty tools. If there is absolutely no way out of having to go to a beauty salon, take your own foundation and powder along with you to avoid risking the use of colours that do not match your skin tone. Don't be afraid to speak up! Guide the beautician step by step, and be very clear about what you want from the moment you sit on that swiveling chair.

Q: How do I decide between powder and cream blush? Is there really a difference?

A: If your skin is very dry, you may prefer the creamy version of blush.

Powder blush has more staying power on oily skin. This doesn't mean you can't experiment until you find the formula that works best for you.

The general idea to remember is that powder blush will create a defined look, while cream blush gives your cheeks a more natural and glowing flush.

Exhibition, chitchat and much more at AppleBox Films’ new office

Walking into the new office space of Applebox Films will leave you pleasantly surprised with the homely environment set within a busy, commercial avenue. The use of wooden walls, floors and glass doors gives a classy and yet cosy touch to the premises, and the walls of the first two rooms are filled with artwork by the budding young graphic designer Kazi Istela Imam.

This exhibition marks the beginning of Applebox Films’ plan to promote young, talented artists bringing something new to the table.

The recent exhibition called “Mixed Tape” consists of the artist Istela’s artwork, which was inspired by music and spans from sketches to collages to mixed media Engaging in gossip with Murshed Bipul, the associate director of Applebox Films, revealed a lot of interesting facts about the organisation.

Approximately 1,200sq feet of the office’s 3,000sq feet premises are dedicated to creating an open space office environment. This open space consists of a gallery for exceptional artists to display their works, and a cafe where employees, facebook fans and clients of the organisation can chat over a cup of coffee. Future plans

include hosting cultural events in a very cosy, homely environment, having a library, and beginning piano classes to attract kids and get them involved in cultural activities.

We spend a major portion of our lives in the workplace, and Applebox Films takes that into consideration by creating an office environment far from monotonous – a model of inspiration for other offices. On the work front, the production company aspires to make a film in the near future and expand globally. Currently, it is trying to overcome challenges to make an impact in an industry that gets minimal support from the government. Working to make a change with a bunch of enthusiastic young talents headed by the gifted Piplu R Khan, Applebox Films seems to be on the path to making a huge impact.

Bangladeshi culinary habits are rather odorous, and with increasingly compact dwellings, the lingering odours of food throughout the house have become almost inevitable.

What smells nice on the dinner table may not have the same effect in the living room. Even a kitchen with generous windows cannot prevent the waft of ‘baagar’ (caramelised onions) permeating through the household By M K Aaref There is more than one way to prevent this problem from happening. One is to have high velocity ventilation fans that suck the kitchen air towards the outside. The other is to install a kitchen exhaust hood on top of stove units. Efficient exhaust hoods have a carbon filter panel that traps various odours, and almost all of them have a metal mesh panel that traps various particles, especially oily ones. A kitchen exhaust hood prevents the spread of grime in the kitchen, and its panels can be cleaned every couple of weeks by detaching and soaking them in soap water or a bit of ammonia.

Space permitting, the trend nowadays is to have two kitchens, an internal one with an oven and stove top for fancy cooking and baking, and an external one for the desi style of cooking that usually has only a dual gas burner.

These two kitchens have clearly demarcated separations that prevent odours from seeping through, and this is the best way of preventing an odorous house.

White clothing Lemon juice is the ideal bleaching agent when it comes to cleaning whites. If there are any persistent stains, squeeze lemon juice on them and leave the whites out in the sun. Afterwards, wash the whites as you normally would. The bleaching agent in lemons will remove the stains.

Candle wax With the current load shedding situation, many times we are left with good old candles. However, once the power cut is

over, tabletops and countertops are left with the remains of candle wax that do not want to budge. Place a paper towel on top of the stain, and iron it. The wax will melt and get stuck to the towel.

Perfume stains If you want to soak a yellowing perfume stain, use some white vinegar on the stained area and then wash. However, this is only a good home remedy if the fabric isn’t too flimsy.

General food stain The moment you stain your clothes in a restaurant, immediately ask for club soda.

Pour it on top of the spill to prevent the stain.

Strawberry cheesecake bites Strawberries have always been my favourite fruit, and I’m so glad that they are readily available in Dhaka now. Having them in grocery stores here means we are open to a whole new world of possibilities. They can be added to various salads, desserts and drinks for more texture, tanginess and balance. This recipe is one of my favourite, go-to dessert recipes whenever I have company. When serving food, I try to think out of the box and pleasantly surprise people. Unusual recipes always spark interesting conversations.

Strawberry cheesecake bites are easy to make, fun to eat, and always turn out well. There’s absolutely nothing hard about this recipe. Even the worst cook \ couldn’t mess this one up!

Ingredients l About 20 strawberries l 1 package softened cream cheese (8 oz) l 1/2 cup powdered sugar l 1/2 tsp vanilla essence l 1 tsp freshly squeezed lime juice l 5 digestive biscuits Directions: l Wash and cut off the top, including the leaves, of the strawberries and scoop out the inner portion of the fruit to make it hollow with a small knife l Crush the digestive biscuits in a small bowl into a powder and set aside l In a separate bowl, mix together softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, lime juice and vanilla. l Using a spoon, fill in the hollow portion of the strawberries with the cheesecake filling, and dip the top in the digestive biscuit mixture to coat it l Repeat this step for all of the strawberries, and there you have a plate full of yummy, fresh and summery snacks

For large, regular sized tomatoes, it’s advisable to grow them in the ground, as for the smaller variety, it’s better to grow them in hanging baskets

Step 1 In a pot, pour in seed compost, only leaving a few centimetres below the rim. Take the tomato seeds and scatter evenly over the compost.

Cover that layer with vermiculite and then water it. Keep the pot
