Challenge – An Accounting Manager is tasked with reducing the time it takes to close the books each month. Although the manager has tried to support her employees during the busy time, she has been unable to make significant progress in the project. It was noted these delays are due to getting information from other areas of the organization such as Sales and Marketing when required by the closing schedule. The Accounting Manager is feeling the pressure from the Executive team to get the numbers to them earlier each month, but is unable to make progress. Solution – Using value stream mapping, the experts

from the Lean Performance Center helped the Accounting Department identify the most critical improvements. Through a rapid improvement event, the accounting employees, along with sales and marketing employees collaborated to reduce the closing lead time significantly. The best part about the experience is that the individuals involved are now ready to lead other improvement events to help this organization continuously improve.

The low pass rate was causing inefficiencies for underwriters and customer service specialists by having to manually touch thousands of policies.” Tim Riedl, Vice President of Commercial Lines Underwriting, SECURA Insurance By assembling a cross-functional team of SECURA employees and adopting the Six Sigma approach, Tim, with the help of FVTC’s experienced, certified instructors, was able to eliminate business rules affecting some 4,000 accounts annually with no impact on loss or policyholder retention ratios. The team expects that the changes it made will enable the organization to achieve its pass rate target of 25%. 47
