Pastor John K. Jenkins Pastor John K. Jenkins Sr. has been preaching the Good News since he was licensed as a minister at 15 years old. From an early age, he developed a love for the Lord and felt a call to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. His pastoral journey began in February 1987 when he was called to serve as the senior pastor at Union Bethel Church in King George, Va. Nearly three years of pastoring at Union Bethel proved to be the training ground for his upcoming assignment. In October of 1988, Pastor Jenkins learned of the passing of his pastor and mentor, Dr. John W. Johnson, from his home church at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden. One year after Dr. Johnson’s passing, Pastor Jenkins returned to First Baptist to become the seventh shepherd. The fruit of his biblically based teaching is evidenced in the growth of church membership from 500 to more than 10,000. Today, an average 11,000 people attend weekly Sunday services between two campuses located in Landover and Upper Marlboro, Md. A tech-savvy minister, Pastor Jenkins embraces technology to reach souls in a global way. All four of First Baptist’s Sunday worship services, Tuesday night Bible study and church events are streamed live via the church website. Pastor Jenkins also ministers to 7,000 viewers who tune in each week online. With the support of his wife, Trina, and their loving family, Pastor Jenkins is able to expand his ministry beyond the walls of First Baptist. In addition to his role as senior pastor, he is a trustee at Bethel University and board chairman for Project Bridges and The Skinner Institute. The Skinner Institute was founded in 1992 by the late Reverend Tom and Dr. Barbara Skinner. He also serves as a board member for the Greater Prince George’s Business Roundtable, National Association of Evangelicals and a local hospital. For two years, Pastor Jenkins served as vice president/executive director of National Ministries with Converge Worldwide. He was formerly on the boards of Great Dads, Teen Challenge and a local bank. Under the leadership of Pastor Jenkins, First Baptist founded SHABACH! Ministries, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) arm of the church in 1996. Today he serves as chairman emeritus for SMI, which provides clothing, food, education and other resources to more than 11,000 people in the Washington, D.C., area. He has traveled across the world preaching and teaching the masses about the love of Jesus Christ. And after pastoring at First Baptist since 1989, he remains steadfast in his quest to “develop dynamic disciples.” He is recognized as a catalyst to help individuals grow into lifelong Christian disciples who follow Jesus Christ. Pastor Jenkins believes that these individuals will impact the world on behalf of the Lord, thereby strengthening families and healing broken hearts along the way. In 2001, Pastor Jenkins added another credential to his resume when he received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Southern California School of Ministry in Inglewood, California. After becoming a licensed pilot in 2002, he takes great delight in flying.

PREFACE TO THE ORDINAL

The Holy Scriptures and ancient Christian writers make it clear that from the apostles’ time, there have been different ministries within the Church. God has used these sacred offices and ministries to guide the Church to the fulfillment of its earthly purpose. In particular, since the time of the New Testament, God gives fine points that outline the character and duties of the postResurrection Church. The Scriptures highlight the Holy order of the church as required by God in I Corinthians 12:28 - And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. First, there is the order of bishops who carry on the apostolic work of leading, supervising, and uniting the Church. Secondly, associated with them are the presbyters, or ordained elders, in subsequent times generally known as priests. Together with the bishops they take part in the governance of the Church in the carrying out of its missionary and pastoral work, and in the preaching of the Word of God and administering His holy Sacraments. Thirdly, there are deacons who assist bishops and elders in all of this work. It is also a special responsibility of deacons to minister in Christ’s Name to the poor, the sick, the suffering and the helpless. The Jericho City of Praise, as predestined by God the Father, will witness the Holy Consecration and Installation of the Undershepherd, Dr. Jasmin W. Sculark to the Holy Office of Senior Pastor by solemn prayer and the laying on of Episcopal hands. The act of consecration is a public affirmation of the servant’s call and pledge of lifelong commitment to the cause of Christ and the Church. It is also recognized and affirmed that the fivefold ministry is not the exclusive property of this portion of Christ’s universal Church, but it is a gift from God for the nurture of His people and the proclamation of His Gospel everywhere. Accordingly, the manner of ordaining in this Church is to be such as has been, and is, most generally recognized by Christian people as suitable for conferring the sacred orders of bishop, elder and deacon. Ephesians 4:11 - And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;... It is because of His sovereign will that we stand together as a collective body of believers. ...and so, the transition begins ...but the “legacy” continues

The Examination The Consecration continues with all seated, except the Pastor-select, who is facing the Chief Consecrator, the Presiding Bishop addresses the Pastor-Select. “My sister, you have been chosen by God and the people have affirmed their trust in you by acclaiming your selections. As pastor in God’s Holy Church you are called to be one with the apostles in proclaiming Christ’s resurrection and interpreting the Gospel, and to testify to Christ’s sovereignty as Lord of Lords and King of Kings. “You are called to guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church; to celebrate and to provide for the administration of the sacraments of the New Covenant; to ordain elders and deacons and to join in the call of souls to the kingdom; and to be in all things a faithful pastor and a wholesome example for the entire flock of Christ. “With your fellow pastors you will share in the leadership of the Church throughout the world. Your heritage is the faith of patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs, and those of every generation who have looked to God in hope. Your joy will be to follow Him who came, not to be served, but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many. “Are you persuaded that YOU ARE TRULY CALLED TO THIS Ministration, according to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ and the order of this Church?”

Answer:

I am so persuaded.

Bishop Jakes: Are you persuaded that the Holy Scriptures contain all Doctrine required as necessary for eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ? And are you determined out of the same Holy Scriptures to instruct the people committed to your charge; and to teach or maintain nothing, as necessary to eternal salvation, but that which you shall be persuaded may be concluded and proved by the same? Answer:

I am so persuaded and determined, by God’s grace.

Bishop Jakes: Will you then faithfully exercise yourself in the Holy Scriptures, and call upon God by prayer for the true understanding of the same; so that you may be able by them to teach them and exhort with wholesome Doctrine and to withstand and convince the gainsayers?

Answer:

I will so do, by the help of God.

Bishop Jakes: Are you ready, with all faithful diligence, to banish and drive away from the Church all erroneous and strange doctrine contrary to the Word of God; and both privately and openly to call upon and encourage others to the same?

Answer:

I am ready, the Lord being my helper.

Bishop Jakes: Will you deny all ungodliness and worldly lusts and live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present world; that you may show yourself in all things an example of good works unto others, that the adversary may be ashamed, having nothing to say against you?

Answer:

I will do so, the Lord being my helper.

Bishop Jakes: Will you maintain and set forward, as much as shall lie in you, quietness, love, and peace among all men; and diligently exercise such discipline as by the authority of God’s Word, and by the order of this Church which is committed to you?

Answer:

I will.

Bishop Jakes: Will you share with your fellow pastors in the government of the whole Church; will you sustain your fellow presbyters and take counsel with them; will you guide and strengthen the deacons and all others who minister in the Church?

Answer:

I will, by the grace given me.

Bishop Jakes:

Will you be faithful in Ordaining sending or laying hands upon those who prove their callings in Christ and qualify according to the standards of Scripture and the Canons of this Church?

Answer:

I will.

Bishop Jakes: Will you be merciful to all, show compassion to the poor and strangers and defend those who have no helper?

Answer:

I will, for the sake of Christ Jesus of Lord.

Bishop Jakes: My Daughter: through these promises you have committed yourself to God, to serve His Church in the office of pastor. We therefore call upon you, chosen to be a guardian of the Church’s faith, to lead us to confessing that faith.

The Pastor-Select says:

“WE BELIEVE IN ONE GOD. Then all say together w/congregation seated (on screen) We believe in One God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God begotten from the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right Hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His Kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy universal and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Installation Charge: The Reverend Dr. Charles E. Booth Jasmin “Jazz” Sculark minister of word and sacrament in Christ,: You have been called by God through the leading voice of this congregation to be its minister; you have been called to help lead this people in the way of Jesus Christ. Within the common ministry of all of us, you have been set apart for special service, to equip the body of Christ for its ministry of reconciliation to the world. As you embark on this chapter of your ministry, I charge you -- Remember always that Jesus came not to be served but to serve. I charge you -- To seek to live with the joy and confidence that comes from being rooted in the gospel and in knowing the giftedness of life. While your office grants you privilege, it is the privilege to serve in the name of Christ Jesus. So, in the discharge of your office, I charge you -- To love and serve Christ’s people, in this place and beyond, even as Christ has loved you; open your life to them, sharing their joys, their burdens, their labors, their faith. I charge you -- Not to forget the trust of those who have chosen you. Preach the word, in season and out. Teach faithfully, watching over these people by providing for their spiritual life and instruction. Nourish them with wisdom and strengthen them to glorify God. Care for them with patience: young and old, strong and weak, rich and poor. Urge them to remember the friendless and the needy. Show the love of Jesus to all peoples. I charge you -- To serve this people with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love, relying on God’s mercy and rejoicing in God’s promises through Jesus Christ. I charge you -- to seek Christ’s presence in prayer, strengthening yourself for your work. Spend ample time in study and do not shortchange it; for only then can you be a worthy instrument. Trust the many gifts bestowed upon you and allow God and this congregation to forgive your failings. Take leisure and recreation; enjoy your family and give them time to enjoy you. And may the Lord God bless you and keep you, now and forever.

Charge of the Congregation: Pastor John K. Jenkins (Jericho’s congregation standing)

Re-dedicate yourselves to the gospel and give yourselves to God’s renewing power. Place your whole selves in Christ’s service, that God may be glorified in this place and beyond.

The Sacred Office of the Pastor We understand that the office of the Pastor is set in the Church by God. A pastor is someone who has spiritual care over a congregation. The English word occurs only once in the Bible in Ephesians 4:11 “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers.” In the new testament there are several Greek words referring to Pastor. One such translation is poimen and literally means shepherd. Another is the Hebrew word ‫( רעה‬roʿeh). It relates to the feeding of sheep, as in Genesis 29:7, or to the spiritual feeding of God's people, as in Jeremiah 3:15, "Then I will give you shepherds after My own heart, who will feed you on knowledge and understanding" (NASB). Therefore, a pastor is a shepherd of God's flock who is to instruct, teach and protect the people under their charge. As ordained Elders, Ministers and Deacons, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we rejoice in the selection of Dr. Jasmin "Jazz" Sculark to be our Pastor, we will whole-heartedly honor her calling, encourage her, respect her decisions, follow her leadership as she leads us on to greater heights in God, Who alone is Head of the Church.

Dr. Jasmin W. Sculark (Dr. Jazz) The Board of Trustees along with the Jericho Church Family Welcomes You The Vision Continues… We stand in awe of the marvelous work that the Lord is doing at the Jericho City of Praise. It is because of His sovereign will, that we, together as a collective body of believers, with great joy and open arms receive you, Dr. Jasmin W. Sculark (Dr. Jazz), as the Senior Pastor of the Jericho City of Praise. You are a very precious gift which God has given us. Thank you for accepting this God-given assignment. Many years ago our leaders were commanded by God to teach His people faith. They taught us and in recent days that faith and the Word in each of us has been tested and tried. However, because of that unfailing, engrafted Word of God, we were able to wait on the Lord and be of good courage while He was making us ready to receive you. We used the title “Pastor-Select,” because it is clear to us that God Himself made this selection and dropped you in our midst. We do not take it lightly that we have been given this great blessing from the Lord!

In the service of Him who called us, we as fellow servants have linked up with you, as our God imparts His wisdom and grace upon you to carry out this new assignment here at the Jericho City of Praise. You can depend upon us to work together with you to impact our community, the nation and the world, making the Name of our God “great” in this land. it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. THE PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY GOVERNMENT OFFICE OF THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE

September 7, 2014 Rushern L. Baker, III County Executive

Greetings: On behalf of the citizens and residents of Prince George’s County, it is my pleasure to extend greetings and welcome Dr. Jasmin W. Sculark (Dr. Jazz) to the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area as she begins her assignment with Jericho City of Praise as Senior Pastor. I am certain that the Pastoral Installation Services will be a wonderful time of praise, worship and consecrated commitment to ministry. It is fitting that you chose the theme “Pastor and People Seeking to Do Greater Works.” Dr. Jazz is an exceptional spiritual leader and her ministry will be an incredible blessing to the church and to Prince George’s County. Jericho City of Praise has enjoyed a wonderful history of inspirational preaching, effective teaching and dedicated members who compassionately serve others. I am confident under the leadership of Dr. Jazz, that the legacy of service and love established by the late and beloved Bishop Dr. James R. Peebles, Sr. and Apostle, Dr. Betty P. Peebles, will not only continue, but thrive under Dr. Jazz’s direction and spiritual guidance. Best wishes for a successful service full of praise and worship and may God continue to bless each of you. Sincerely, Rushern L. Baker, III County Executive
