LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

READ THIS RIGHT NOW! Don’t fall back, dream forward → By Chief Running Officer, Eric Lindberg

Don’t wanna wait til tomorrow, why put it off another day? Now you gotta run to get even, make future plans, don’t dream about yesterday!

Y

ou know I am bit of a Van Halen fan, right? I mean Right Now! I have every VH song on my ipod and when I need a lift during a long run, or even a long day, all I need to hear is little, Sammy, Eddie, Alex, Dave, Mikey, and yes, Wolfgang, to get me going (sorry Gary Cherone, you don’t count). It is mid-August and I am prepping for “tomorrow” by not only writing my monthly column for September Right Now, but also getting a JUMP! on the very busy fall season. From the last weekend of August until the weekend of November 21st, our little OYL! is managing events every single week. Just take a peek at our event calendar and try to Catch Me If You Can at www.dfwruns.com/events. With that comes a ton of pre event planning. Take, for instance, two of our biggest events this fall; the Rahr & Sons Oktoberfest 5K and Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon, 5K and 1K presented by Advil. This week in August, (not Right Now), we had to commit to shirt orders for these races, roughly 7,000 of them, all sized perfectly for you (Everybody Wants Some!). That’s kind of rockin’ crazy because at this point, maybe only half of you have registered for these races!

“When we all place our chips on the table early, everyone saves, everyone wins, the system works most efficiently for [everyone].”

Toss in the additional financial commitment for Half, 5K and 1K finisher medals and, (Somebody Get Me a Doctor!) we’ve put out close to $75,000 without the revenue against it. Did I just type that? Sometimes it catches me off guard when I actually type numbers that large. If you would have asked me eight years ago if this little company could do that, I would have said, only if we’re Running with the Devil! My goal here is simply to give you a glimpse into the world of race direction, some insight into OYL!, and how we have grown over the years. Being in the position that we are, with great clients, amazing customers, and a rocking staff makes me proud. I can’t believe it has been eight years since DFWRUNS first burst onto the scene and now produces events from coast to coast and border to border. Right Now, I am listening to Sammy sing Dreams. One of the reasons why I am such a big fan is that he is the happiest and most appreciative rock star on the planet. Yeah, his music ain’t bad either. The version of Dreams I am listening to is acoustic and was recorded in Cabo. Sammy talks about chasing your dreams and how great that is and that it doesn’t get any better… except when living your dream, which is what I am doing, right now. Goosebumps. So do me and every race director a favor and register early! Like perfecting an efficient stride weeks or months before race day, you not only develop Drop Dead Legs, but when we all place our chips on the table early, everyone saves, everyone wins, the system works most efficiently for the participant, the client, and for your biggest fans at OYL! See you at the VH concert in Dallas on September 23 and hopefully in Cabo on October 13! Maybe Sammy will celebrate DFWRUNS 8th birthday with us.

t’s September! And still, no matter how hard you try, you can’t complain the weather away. Many people are training for fall and winter full and half marathons right now. Long runs are getting longer, even in this scorching heat. But it must get done. Right? Every year, a friend of mine posts to Facebook, “Do you remember the 21st night of September? Love was changing the minds of pretenders, while chasing the clouds away. Our hearts were ringing, in the key that our souls were singing. As we danced in the night. Remember how the stars stole the night away.” I love music and it drives me to be a better runner, I pretty much always have my old school iPod with me on my runs, especially the long

ones. Those lyrics of Earth Wind & Fire’s song, “September,” evoke images of sunny, cloudless days and dancing under the stars, reminding us all to have some final summer fun. This song should be top of the playlist this month. Back in summer of 2010, that friend and I were trudging along together, blistering weekend after blistering weekend, training for our first marathon, the Chicago Marathon. On the infamous weekend of Sept. 21, we had an 18 miler on the schedule and we were tired of the same old, repetitive 9 mile loop around the lake, so we signed up for a 20K. Before the race that morning, we ran 6 miles first and then did the race too. I finished the 20K in 2 hours 24 minutes and I’m

in the sun, whether cloudy or snowy, or on icy earth, through wind or fire. Embrace it. Don’t let the summer fun finale pass you by like some harsh competitor. Those old winter complaints will rear their ugly heads soon! I came across useful tips in this lifehacker.com article like; // Run by effort, not pace. // Run early. // Get off the roads! (leave the heat-absorbing asphalt and concrete behind for a shady trail) // Adjust your expectations. (you’ll still be a better acclimated runner once the temps fall) // Don’t wear dark colors or cotton. // Start your run hydrated (and keep hydrating). // Plan your run around public parks with drinking fountains.

pretty sure it was 100 degrees. It was sunny and fiery hot when I finished. On that summer morning, we ran about three and a half hours in the heat. Did we complain about the weather on Facebook? NO. Did we share negative experiences about the ‘hills’ at the 20K (and there were many of them). NO. Did we socially abuse the event organizers about the warm Gatorade or the lack of food at the end of the 20K (even as my friend was one of the last to finish)? NO. In fact, I remember we celebrated our ambitious conquering of one of our final long runs before the marathon training. We enjoyed every single hot step along the way. From then to now, every summer in between and in the future; Texas summers never change folks. They are sunny and they are hot. Training never changes either. If we live here, we must train in the heat. No matter how many posts we put on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or any other online platform, we can’t change the weather. Race directors do not have a ‘weather permit’ they can submit to the City for your perfect race day conditions. Suck it up buttercup. My unsolicited advice this month is; prepare for your run, and remember, “the summer heat is no time to compete”. Slow down your run. Use it as training. And enjoy it. Be grateful that you can run — in the heat, in the rain,

e live in a day and age when so many various types of cancer are recognized each month that the calendar (with the exception of December) is full. This month — National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, your OYL! team dedicates many hours and miles in support of the national race series clearing some space on that calendar, ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates there are/ will be about 220,800 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States in just this calendar year alone; one of them will be discovered before you’re even finished reading this article. Here’s how we are working with the folks at ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer, to change that statistic — all the way to down to zero. The ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk, the largest men’s health event series in America, has 29 races which not only fill the month of September, but run all

the way through November 21 (6,825,600 seconds from now), and we’ll be onsite for nearly half! Each of these race events — from the beautiful bays in San Diego to the historical city of Greensboro, North Carolina, applies 97 cents of every dollar raised toward advancing research, early detection, advocacy and government relations, and to provide education and support to men and their families. With some of this September’s races already on course to raise between $50K-$100K for the cause, we work double-overtime to apply our race operations and marketing support for good reason. RICK JOHNSON

I live to run… but more importantly I run to live.” People always ask me what I’m training for when they see me running — “for life” is my response. I’ve been married for 30 years and have three wonderful children. I have run more than 60 marathons and half marathons. I have been pacing half and full marathons for several years now, and nothing is more rewarding then helping someone achieve their goal… and making them laugh all along the way!

ANDREW ROSE

I have been running since 2011. I began running to raise funds in memory of my nephew Mavrick after he lost his battle with leukemia. I fell in love with running, and haven’t stopped since. I have run a bunch of half marathons, marathons, and three 50Ks. My most memorable races are those where I have paced, either on a team or one on one with a friend, and thus been a part of helping someone achieve a new race distance, a new personal record, or just pushing through the walls along the way. I look forward to seeing you all out there!

Running has become a very important part of my life. I started in running in 2006 to help me deal with stress and along the way I have met many wonderful people who teach me the joy of running. From 5Ks to 10Ks to 15Ks to Half Marathons… I run because the running journey is beautiful!

DAVID CROTHERS

My first introduction to running was through the US Army… where I got the opportunity to run for many of my nine years of service. After getting out of the Army, I took several years off from running, but have just recently begun to embrace it once again. In the past six months, I have raced a half marathon every month. Each one was special and memorable, and I truly enjoy meeting so many wonderful people at these events. The opportunity to pace the Plano Balloon Festival humbles me as it is a way for me to give back to the running community; to share my affection for the sport for which I care so much. My goals is that each person I help, will leave the run with a greater passion for running than they started with.

The McKinney Running Club (MRC) is a group of 200+ runners of various abilities and motivations. There is a weekly schedule of runs including morning and evening speed work, hills, fun runs, and long runs on Saturdays. The “big” weekly run is every Saturday at 6 a.m. from Market Street grocery on Eldorado at Ridge. Come a few minutes early and ask around about paces and distances and you’ll find some folks to run with.

MEET YOUR FLIGHT COMMANDERS, CONT. in my life had planned to do. It was also one of my favorites because the group I trained with had many other first timers and we all crossed that finish line the same day. Celebrating that exciting day with them is something I will never forget! I love the fact that I am not running for me! It brings me greater joy knowing I’m helping another runner cross the finish line! I have yet to run a marathon! My first one will be January 2016 in Houston!

GREG RANKIN

I have been running for most of the last 35 years. The 3M in Austin was my favorite half back in 2013 because I got to race against my Godson who was 16 at the time — he beat me. Although I have been running a long time, this will be my first time to pace a race. On a personal note: I was 232 pounds in January of 2011 and have lost 80 pounds thru running and a better diet.

GRACE WALKER

A favorite half marathon of mine is the Seaside Half in Seaside, FL. You receive a Vera Bradley bag, awesome crowd support along the course, great beer, and BBQ after the race. The

first race I ran with a pacer was back in October; running with a pacer helped me finish faster than my goal time. I am excited to be able to do the same for another runner.

KRISTEN NICHOLS

I’ve been running now for two years. The Wounded Warrior Half is one of my favorite half marathons. Who doesn’t enjoy supporting, honoring, and empowering wounded warriors? I love running with so many heroes! Pacing brings so much joy, and value to my life. I love seeing others succeed and accomplish their goal that day. The fact I can be a very small part of that, as I encourage and keep them on pace, is what it’s all about.

TERI ANDERSON

I’ve been running for five years now and my favorite half marathon is the Dallas Rock & Roll… it was my first. I am excited to pace the Plano Balloon Festival [Half] because I love being able to help people reach their goals. There is nothing better than to help someone cross that finish line! OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH DAMNGOODE’S → By Rose Deal

I

think it’s time you plan a trip to Arkansas. Maybe you can go for a race, or go to float a river, go to a lake, go rock climbing or go do one of the many activities that the beautiful state of Arkansas can provides. Really though, go run. With so many good trails in Arkansas, paved and otherwise, you just can’t go wrong. Though I love my dirty trail runners, I am going to stick with paved. I am guessing that a good number of you find yourself in Little Rock, AR from time to time for business. So, you need you to know about the Arkansas River Trail. I love running on the Arkansas River Trail. For one thing, it’s hard to find flat running in Arkansas and the Arkansas River Trail really does a good job of staying mostly flat. Little Rock is a pretty hilly place, so how they managed to come up with so many miles of paved mostly flat trails is beyond me. I call it a miracle. One breathtakingly cool thing about the Arkansas River Trail is that it boasts three amazing pedestrian bridges. In fact, you may consider the bridges to be the on this trail. My favorite bridge is the Big Dam Bridge. I especially love it in the early morning or in the evening when it is lit up all nice and pretty. The other two, the Clinton Presidential Bridge and the Two Rivers Bridge, are equally wonderful. I usually start my run at the Big Dam Bridge so that’s the one I know the best. Ow! When I start a run there, it’s a

tough little start to run up the bridge, but I do love the finish. I come down that bridge with fury in my step! There is something you really do need to know about these trails. You MUST give at least one runner a high five. If you can, just give every runner a high five. This is how we pay tribute to one of the greatest runners Arkansas has ever known. Last year, the running community suddenly lost one of the funniest, most caring runners ever. Jacob Wells left a big impact on so many people that almost every runner you high five will know you are giving high fives for Jacob. Jacob loved these bridges and, rightly so, started a marathon called, The Three Bridges Marathon. It is mostly run on the Arkansas River Trail and it crosses all three of these bridges. Now called, the Jacob Wells 3 Bridges Marathon, it’s a must-do race. It takes place in December and it always fills up. Put it on your list. You will be glad you did. Now, when you go to Little Rock, and you decide to do a little run on the Arkansas River Trail, there is one more thing I need you to do. You are required to go to Damgoode Pies and eat the Pink Stuffy Underdog Pizza. It is simply THE BEST pizza you will find in the state. Food Network even put this pizza on its 50 states 50 pizza list. You will find one close to the River Trail, so go enjoy a pizza and a local beer. I repeat. It’s a requirement. Yes, this girl is a jaunt junkie and loves this state. Now, I just can’t wait to get back up there and get running. Rose Deal lived in Arkansas for 5 years before transferring her runthusiasm to the Lone Star State. She is a star OYL! PPL and is also currently training for the Dallas Marathon (though we’re suspicious she’s just prepping for a large Pink Stuffy Underdog).

INTERVIEW WITH A SEMINOLE Lap Two with Chelsi Woodruff → By Holly Johnson, M.D.

L

ast month I sat down with this blazing fast FSU running alumna and talked to her about her passion for running and how she got started. This month she tells us about training on a college campus and what is in store for her future.

Take yourself back to your redshirt freshman year. You’re finally on FSU’s campus. Any advice for balancing sports and academics?

Q

¹

ANSWER ¹ FSU’s campus seemed huge compared to high school! I remember feeling excited yet very overwhelmed at the same time. There was always something going on in the dorms, and I had to quickly learn how to balance my academic and practice schedules. Advice I would give to balancing the two would be to definitely stay on top of your work, and get to know your professors; introduce yourself and attend their office hours.

Talk to me a little bit about your FSU coach and how she inspired a top ranked team in the country to go on to win meets. What quotes of hers do you still hear in your head when you are pushing yourself to run faster and to stick to it?

Q

¹

ANSWER ¹ Coach Karen Harvey believed in me and gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to run for FSU. On the track and XC courses, she was intense! Off the track, she was a really cool person, who had a love for God. I will never forget her biking next to us during tempos or running back and forth across the inside of the track yelling splits and pushing me to new limits. I will never forget the time I ran about twenty seconds faster in the indoor 3K than predicted, and she picked me up and spun me around the infield! This past XC season she told us that we had two options during a race: We could choose door #1 and give in when the pain started creeping in, or we could choose door #2 which was known as the “pain closet”…we could dig deep and fight through the pain. Then before this past outdoor track season, she told me to “run free!” I used “run free” to run without limits and to push myself to new levels.

Q

¹

What runners inspire you? What is it about them that pumps you up?

ANSWER ¹ Being a steeplechaser, I have to say that Emma Coburn is definitely an inspiration with her graceful hurdling and water pit techniques. Another runner that really inspires me both athletically and spiritually is my former FSU teammate who is now a pro runner for Hoka One One, Amanda Rego. She is not only a very accomplished runner, but she is also an amazing friend with a deep faith. She is very humble, and I believe that is how an elite → CONTINUED athlete should be.

DOC IN THE BOX What is your pre-race ritual? I know that your faith is a pillar for you. Do you have a certain prayer you pray pre-race that is part of your ritual?

Q

¹

ANSWER ¹ People who know me well know that my pre-race ritual consists of a lot of port-a-potty stops–ha-ha! Seriously though, I am very focused during my pre-race warm-up, and my teammates and coaches know the “scary face” that I put on an hour or two before a race. Once I step on to the track and complete my last few strides, I always pray, “God, thank you for giving me this opportunity to race. Please give me the strength and confidence that I need to run this race. You have never failed me, even on my worst days. Please be by my side every step of the way, especially near the end when it gets tough. Lord, I give this race to you.”

What was your biggest setback? No doubt that running is hard on your body. Overcoming injuries was quite a physical and mental challenge for you. Did you ever want to give up?

Q

¹

ANSWER ¹ I dealt with quite a few setbacks during my time at FSU. I had some hip alignment issues which led to a stress reaction in my femoral neck and later a stress fracture in my pubic ramus during my collegiate career. During these injuries I was upset and frustrated; however, during this time I was able to do things that I would not have had time to do if I had been running. For example, I took time take an FSU Fellowship of Christian Athletes trip to St. Simons Island. Luckily with the help of my athletic trainer, Natalie, and my physical therapist, I was able to come back at just the right time, and I ended up having my best cross country season at FSU! Natalie always reminded me to be “bright and

shiny” every day, and that soon became my pre-race saying for my fifth and final year at FSU.

Q

¹

Setbacks stink, so now tell us about a few FSU running career highlights.

ANSWER ¹ A few highlights that stick out to me the most are: 1. Placing 3rd in the steeplechase at the 2015 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships and earning All-ACC First Team Honors with a new PR of 10:13 on my home track with all of my family and friends there cheering me on and supporting me. 2. Winning the Tracy Pepoon True Seminole Award during the 2014-15 season for guts and courage. 3. Being a member of the ACC Cross Country Championship winning team in 2011 & 2013, a member of the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championship winning team in 2014, and being a part of the 2013-2014 FSU Women’s ACC Triple Crown winning team.

Q

¹

Q

¹

Can I see your ACC championship rings?

ANSWER ¹ Oooh! That is so sweet!

What is next for you?

ANSWER ¹ I just signed a contract with ASICS Greenville Track Club-Elite in South Carolina to continue my running career at the next level. I still plan to try to focus on the steeplechase, however I will also focus more on 1500s and 5Ks and on improving my speed and strength. I would have never dreamed that I would have the opportunity to continue running post-collegiately, but God opened another door yet again, and for that I am truly thankful!
