he Donald. No matter what you think of him, he is changing the way we look at politics. Good or bad, that is for you to decide, I tend to favor the good side. Besides having some marketable hair, we do share some of the same qualities when it comes to business. (I just wish the running business was as lucrative as the commercial real estate business).

YES!

Additionally, Trump and I also share a common view point on our government; it could use a shake up. As we work across the country with a wide variety of municipalities from Special Events offices to park departments to transportation to police, more than often we are met by workers who have a very negative tone, aren’t helpful or don’t even respond to us. This certainly wouldn’t fly in the private sector. This is not an article designed to blast the government and we do also work with some amazing people, but the majority is the opposite and we can’t

figure out why. Here are a couple of recent examples and, to protect the integrity of those we do work with, I will keep this generic. As many of you know, we try our best to schedule our event set up the day before the race. In one instance, we submitted our permit application to the park but they turned us down because of another event to take place the day prior. I emailed the park’s department rep to see if he could put me in touch with the contact for the event to see if we could share some costs. No response. I followed up with another phone call where the rep told me they couldn’t give me any contact info. Again, this is a public park so all records are public. Finally, after pressing the rep, he gave me the name of the company hosting the event. Additionally, the rep told me that if we got permission from the other company, then we could set up the day before. I reached out to the company and they were more than happy to work with me and their event wasn’t anywhere near the area we needed to set up. They wrote a letter to me validating our discussion, granting permission to set up on Friday and I sent it

over to the park’s dept. And guess what? Yep, I got an email from them stating that we still couldn’t set up the day before because of… and a half insincere “sorry”. Another recent example was with a special events office. One of the checklist items for a permit is to notify residents and businesses along the route about street closures and, in some cases, to get permission from property owners. As a part of our conditional permit, the City asked us to get permission from a particular property. No problem we do it all the time. Now of course the City doesn’t give you the contact info for the property owner, just the address. So as I am doing my research I find that the property they want us to contact doesn’t exist. I reached out to our contact to explain this and even ask for clarity but got no response. I waited a couple of days, resent the email, no response. I call, leave a message, no response. Understand that according to our conditional permit we can’t hold the race without this. I call and email several more times and get no response. With these attitudes at the level we deal with the government, it scares me to think about what is going on at a higher level. Dealing with this often makes it difficult to keep a solutions based mindset and to respond not react. Trust me, I get frustrated but recently a client introduced me to the phrase “an easy no or a hard yes”. He learned it from an amazing person who had volunteered for a race because the company he worked for sponsored it. But he was recently laid off by that company, which continued to sponsor the race. So, when it came time to ask him to volunteer again, it would have been very easy to simply say “no” but instead he gave us a hard yes. This philosophy applies not only to business but a lot to living the active lifestyle, meaning:

Do the math. The 6th annual Rahr Oktoberfest 5K = 7 weeks away! → By Cherilyn Wilson

O

n the heels of another school year, here’s a math problem for you. Gretchen has approximately 7 weeks to train to run 5 kilometers. Some guy garbed in lederhosen and a chicken hat has the same amount of time to perfect his costume in hopes of winning the best dressed contest + stein hoisting contest after walk/jogging the same 3.1 miles. If Gretchen finishes the distance 9 minutes faster in her dirndl than said guy, how many more cold Rahr brews will she have in all? This quiz is being timed so you we hope you studied!

If not, your last chance to learn the course without going up against the race clock is on September 5. Don’t flunk out on race day; join the Facebook event for more information about our final exam… our final Rahr & Sons Oktoberfest 5K Social Run before the September 26 race!

I’ve also seen him cruise across the finish line — casually leading the pack in first place at the 2014 Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon and most recently the 7K at the 2015 Dallas 7/4. What I didn’t know is that his passion for running, for keeping things simple, and his dedication to our sport goes far beyond… Currently you’ll find Richard working at the United States Marine Corps but he is headed north

to attend law school at Syracuse University College of Law this summer. I’m confident we’ll see him changing the world for the better, one step at a time. Oh and he is a cat lover too!

Are you training for anything right now? RICHARD ¹ Not in earnest at the moment. I have a few races coming up in the fall that coincide with my favorite fall marathon; The Marine Corps Marathon. I’ve run it 8 years consecutively now and get faster each year, so there is a small pressure to continually improve. But with the move to Syracuse for Law School, I’m not sure how well my base training will survive the beginning of the semester. I’m hoping for 2:30(ish).

Country Championships in Serbia for the U.S. Team, running Boston (in 2014) without slowing down or walking (4th time running Boston) in 2:42, and finally, winning the 2015 Steamboat Springs Marathon. So many memories otherwise, but each is an adventure unto itself.

Favorite place to run & why? RICHARD ¹ Outside, most anywhere; minus inner cities. I wish I could narrow it down to a specific place for you, but I have a lot of places I’ve loved running, but they all have one thing in common: being outside and enjoying the outdoors. My top five places would be: 1. Cape Town, South Africa (Table Mountain 2. Boulder, Colorado (The Flatirons)

Fondest running memory and why? RICHARD ¹ There are honestly a lot of memories I am fond of, so I feel like I cannot singularly identify just one as the fondest. I truly enjoy the ability to run and experience new and old places to run. A few more prevalent memories I have of running are qualifying for Boston the first time at my fourth marathon, running a marathon with the Royal Marines in Afghanistan the week before I finished my tour, competing on the All Marine Running Team for the past few years at events globally, competing in the CISM World Military Cross

You won the Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon in 2014, what do you like about this event? RICHARD ¹ The area, the course, the festival’s sights and sounds. It was tough to get up to speed sometimes because of all the twists and turns, but the scenery and support along the course was incredible. With the liftoff of the balloons at the start it was like a huge party had just started and the finish line was the start of it.

After winning the Steamboat Marathon this year in a time of 2:37 – what would you say pushed you to win this race? RICHARD ¹ There wasn’t really a push, per se, to win. Steamboat started as a vacation centered around a race, and it turned out to be a marathon I ran, and won. I had no prior knowledge of the course or records etc., but it kept popping up in magazines and websites after I placed 3rd at the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, so I mentioned it to my girlfriend and we planned the trip. I started off running with a group of three others, then it became two when one dropped off and one ran ahead on the downhill. I caught up to the guy

who ran ahead at mile 12-13, then by 16 he had dropped back, leaving me alone up front for the last ten miles. I wanted to run my own race, keep a pace I felt comfortable with, I didn’t want to count my eggs before they hatched. As the miles went by, I felt more confident and pushed through til the finish line. I kept looking around in a surreal haze at the incredible scenery to enjoy the course, but within the last few miles, my body was telling me that I just wanted to be done. It’s a rough course, but absolutely worth it in every aspect.

August is Hot as Hell but Tastes like Heaven Houston’s Greater Northside Management District named as recipient of $10,000

A

ugust is a month in which many celebrate one of the Christian saints declared as a great patron of beer brewing, Saint Augustine of Hippo. Once the neighborhood wild child, the life of hot summer parties, and the keeper of many refreshing libations, Augustine’s eventual conversion into a life of purity somehow tapped him as a guardian of brewers. This August, however, OYL! Marketing & Events celebrates one of the other sentinel saints of the stills, Saint Arnold of Houston. Okay, so it’s technically Saint Arnold of Metz, but what’s in a name? While Augustine is suitably a variation of the name, Augustus — as in, Augustus Caesar who gaveth this month its name, it is important to note the saint’s name was derived from the Latin word augere, meaning, “to increase.” Well, join us in eulogizing Saint Arnold Brewing Company over the increase in funding for the Greater Northside Management District derived from the Santo de Mayo 5K! Saint Arnold’s heavenly tasting brew, the one they named Santo, meaning, “Saint”, is a derivative of a Kölsch recipe blessed with inclusion of Munich

and black malt — a saint with a dark side — and is the one behind the event name. But whose behind the big check? Well, their names are, Eric Lindberg, (Chief Running Officer and Owner of OYL!) and Lennie Ambrose, (Marketing & Events Director at Saint Arnold Brewery). Often a host of events benefitting the Houston community and its charitable causes, Lennie and Saint Arnold hired Eric and his OYL! team to pour efforts into a 5K running race centered around Santo and a Cinco de Mayo theme. Ahh, the taste of success! The inaugural sold-out event raised $10,000 to be applied to enhancing Houston’s Greater Northside and numbers for the 2016 race are also predicted to augere! Be a saint and get involved! Why worship a May race in August? Because this is a hot item and we forecast another fast sellout so REGISTER REGISTER NOW! NOW!

TAIL WAGON DOG DAYS OF SUMMER

Burley Bike Gear Doesn’t Bite → By Sharon Lindberg

O

h, the dog days of summer…. Wait! Hit paws! Is that a dog in that bike trailer? Have you met Han Solo? Nope not the Star Wars character… I’m taking about the On Your Left! Marketing & Events working dog who you may have seen recently at one of the Pub Run Series social runs, Joe’s Run, or Dallas 7/4 events. He comes to the office every day and helps organize races and watching patiently as we tap, tap, tap on our computers. His one blue eye and one hazel eye watch closely as we design courses, race bibs and shirts. Lucky dog! Han Solo was a rescue dog. These days, however, he is the one doing the rescuing — rescuing his humans by getting them up from tapping the keyboard to walk him multiple times throughout the work day, to take him out running, keeping his humans moving, throwing, chasing, and playing. If you’re an avid reader of OYL!, you may recall that last summer was the summer of the cruiser bike. Our tail-wagging pup, however, is still too young (and the pavement is too hot) to run alongside when we bike. So earlier this year, we set out to find a solution so Han Solo could cruise along too. (Got your ears perked up and head cocked to the side yet?) Good, because we found one of the coolest gadgets to ensure outdoor fun that’ll have the tongue

hanging out; summer cruising is back on! Han Solo’s sidekick now leads this dog and pony show. This pup is cruising in style in his Burley Tail Wagon pet bike trailer — the Millennium Falcon of all bike trailers. The Burley Tail Wagon Bike Pet Trailer is designed specifically for bringing pets along for the ride and features a flip-down tailgate for quick loading and unloading. The hitch is surprisingly easy to attach to the back wheel of the bike with the tow/arm hitch included with the trailer. The floor is even removable for easy cleaning. Its rugged, safe construction make it a clear winner, no bones about it. The Burley Tail Wagon is recommended for pets under 75 lbs. and it’s the perfect way to transport your favorite furry friend whether towing or strolling. Our four-legged family member is top dog and riding in style; it’s pretty sweet. A happy dog’s tail waggin’ is a fantastic way to bring your pup along on your outdoor biking adventures (on road/sidewalk/ paved trail that is), adding new destinations and new activities to your summer. Time to enjoy the dog days of summer, we are pawsitive, it’s a dog’s life!

L

ook at her go! That girl is so fast!” I said to my friends as Chelsi Woodruff, age nine, took off running along the Charleston, SC waterfront in the velvety gray-blue Lowcountry twilight. Her blond ponytail streamed behind her, legs a-blur. Those days, we talked to Chelsi about funky dance moves, made funny faces at each other, and bought her ice cream with sprinkles on it for a treat. Today, Chelsi is still running, wild ponytail flying behind her. She is a recent graduate of Florida State University. Her résumé now boasts five years of running cross country and track and field in the prestigious Division I NCAA. She took first place in the 2014 3000m steeplechase at FSU Twilight, won the NCAA AllRegion in cross country in 2014, was a two time NCAA preliminary qualifier in the 3000m steeple in 2014 & 2015, took third place in the 2015 ACC 3000m steeple with a time of 10:13 and was named to the All-ACC in the 3000m steeple. She has run a sub-2:15 800m and a 4:29 1500m race. Yep, this girl is fast!

Chelsi recently sat down with me, this time, having a conversation about her love of the oval and her best running memories with a cup of iced coffee at Starbucks — minus the sprinkles...

Q

How old were you when you started running for fun?

ANSWER ¹ I started running for fun in elementary school when we had to run a lap around the PE fields, and I would always try and race the boys in my class!

Q

And for competition?

Q

What was the first fun run you ran?

¹

ANSWER ¹ I started running track in 7th grade when my mom convinced me to give it a try because she ran in high school. I fell in love during the mile time trial on our first day of practice, and by the end of the year I was moved up to the varsity team and qualified for the state meet with my studly 4x800 team! ¹

ANSWER ¹ My first road race was a Turkey Trot in Orlando, Florida when I was in 10th grade…I ran a PR and finally broke 20 minutes in the 5k!

DOC IN THE BOX an amazing coach! He prepared me to compete at the collegiate level. He knows the sport really well, as well as all the science behind it. His goal was to make me a competitive high school runner, but still leave room for improvement for when I got to college. He made me love the sport because he was so passionate about running himself. His corny jokes will always stick with me as well as his race strategy of going out conservatively at first and then making a move later.

Q

¹

When did you know that you wanted to run on the college level?

ANSWER ¹ I didn’t know until my junior year in high school that I wanted to pursue my running career at the next level. By the time I graduated from Trinity Prep in Winter Park, FL, I held the school records in the 4x400m relay, 800m, 1600m, 3200m, and the 5000m. I still hold onto two of those records!

Q

¹

What did you do to prepare for running at a Division I university?

ANSWER ¹ One thing that really helped me during high school was going to Spectrum Sports Performance four to five times a week. I gained a lot of strength from it, and it really helped me once I got to college and started running the steeplechase. I also attended running camps in high school which really helped me with my summer training and helped me get some good hill work (since hills are very hard to find in central Florida!).

Q

¹

I know becoming an FSU Seminole was an easy choice for you as you were dreaming about it ever since

you were little, but what other schools were you considering then?

ANSWER ¹ I also considered Clemson and Elon, but like you said, it was not a very tough decision for me. I was raised an FSU fan, so when Coach Karen Harvey and Coach Braman presented me with an opportunity to run for FSU, there was no way I could turn it down!

Q

¹

Tell us about National Signing Day!

ANSWER ¹ Wow! That day was incredible! I was surrounded by family, friends, teammates, coaches, the headmaster, and the athletic director who all witnessed as I signed my Letter of Intent. That day, it finally hit me that I was actually going to be running for the Seminoles, one of the top running programs in the nation!

Pass on any advice you have for hopeful middle and high school runners who are considering continuing their running careers in the NCAA.

Q

¹

ANSWER ¹ My advice is to not be afraid to dream big! If you want something bad enough, you will be able to find a way to accomplish your goals and dreams. I can promise you that perseverance, determination, commitment, and discipline will all pay off! I was not a top recruit by any means coming out of high school, but I was still able to succeed at a D1 level. What truly matters is that I exceeded my goals I had set for myself, and I learned a lot of life skills in the process from my coaches and teammates. Make sure you are willing to really commit your time to the sport because you are not going to achieve the results you want if your heart is not fully in it. Lap Two with Chelsi is

coming next month…

DO SOMETHING SHADY

Top athletes’ dark secret to being the fittest and fastest is forbidden → By Cherilyn Wilson

A

ll the 2015 nutrition rage is now, “All fail the kale!” and instead chants “Watercress is best!” When researchers studied the nutrients and benefits of everything in our veggie crisper drawer, they concluded this leafy green comes in first place while kale takes 15th. Like last year’s “All hail the kale” fad, many others come and go. One that all parties are now starting to agree on, however, is that white processed starches are bad for you. Gluten-free may be (or may have been) a diet trend (practiced even by those without Celiac disease), but one thing that’s tough to argue are the rewards one reaps by lowering or eliminating that naughty wheat and gluten from their diet. As a runner, you eat your best in watercress, but how do you get all the proper carbs for endurance when you have to wonder what’s in that pretty, polka-dotted bread bag? What’s the quick fix to be the fittest and fastest on race day? The easiest way isn’t illegal, it’s forbidden! Come to the dark side. Black rice, historically nicknamed, Forbidden Rice, was only introduced in the US in the 1990’s (Rice, Rice Baby!) and its amazing healing qualities for the stomach, kidneys and liver were reserved only for royalty in China, thus labeling it, “Forbidden”. But today, this deep dark secret is out and there’s no hiding the benefits it can have on your race season. A fad is bad. This is the year to do something shady.

½ CUP OF FORBIDDEN RICE 160 calories 1.5 grams of fat 34 grams of carbohydrates 2 grams of fiber Black rice naturally contains no gluten, the protein found in all wheat, rye, and barley products so by replacing your refined grains and processed flour products, you may eliminate digestive problems associated with eating gluten. It can also be justifiably assumed that a properly functioning digestive system may reduce bouts of the runner’s runs. Athletes will additionally benefit from this ancient grain’s ability to reduce inflammation throughout the body. Low in fat, high in protein, loaded with carbs. A MOST EXCELLENT RUN

Check it out Bill, Ted, and Frank G. Bonelli → By Eric Lindberg

I

t was a most excellent run! This past June, Sharon and I were out in Southern California to see our cousin graduate from high school. Of course, I had to squeeze in a run too! Though we were in LaVerne, California, we stayed in San Dimas, hence, the Bill and Ted reference. In searching for a little something different, I stumbled upon Frank G. Bonelli Park just on the other side of the 10 freeway. After a quick stop at the Circle K, I hopped into my rental phone booth with my pal Rufus and dialed in a nice trail run. There is a $10 fee to enter the park but I discovered that you can park on one of the surface streets near the damn and jump onto the trails… don’t tell Captain Logan of the San Dimas Police Department. As a law-abiding citizen, however, I did pay the entrance fee and parked alongside the Puddingstone Reservoir.

The only bogus part of my journey was that I was short on time. In total, there are just under 11 miles of trail through the park. I started out on the Corkscrew Trail past the horse stables and which merge onto the Coyote Trail parallel to I10 after a mile and half. It is a hilly and twisty route with the reservoir to the right on the way out. Heading back in, I followed the Middlecrest Trail which is where I discovered the “free” entrance into the park just off of Vila Verde Road. If I had a magical phone booth, I would go back in time to conquer all 11 miles which completely loops the man-made lake. It is a bit tricky along the trails so I do recommend grabbing a map at the park entrance or just download this one. What you will find is a challenging run, hike or even mountain biking experience, and I recommend bringing water dude, and pack your iTunes full of Wild Stallyns jams for this most excellent adventure too!

Fit for the Road 5K

Our Corporate Recess programs are designed for the long haul! → By Cherilyn Wilson

S

ummer is really truckin’ along. Are you? Or have you done far more sitting — spinning your wheels on planes, trains, automobiles, RV’s, beach chairs, restaurant booths and bar stools? The average vacationer basically swaps out that office chair for overtime hours plopped on the tookus. Add in all the travel grab n’ go snacks and meals + extra dining out to indulge in the traditional cuisine, and you’ve got hours of sedentary damage you’ll only burn off sweating from a beach chair. Let’s burn rubber! Did you know it takes only one hour of physical exercise to counteract the effects of sitting for six to seven hours a day. This is why On Your Left! Marketing & Events loves to drive! We drive the initiative to get corporations and their employees to hit the road by putting together active events and wellness plans. If you can’t be on vacation, it’s our job to make it easier for all employees to engage in an activity that is good for them, be it walking or running. We call it Corporate Recess, and it’s designed for workers to bring their families, help a local charity as well as their company, and themselves.

This year, OYL! Marketing & Events is excited to be a part of the Great American Trucking Show — an annual trade show styled event held at the Dallas Convention Center. While en route to your final, relaxing summer destination, did you happen to notice the 2 million tractor trailers or any of the 3.5 million truck drivers along the way? What if all of your forward motion was done sitting behind the wheel, traveling day in and day out — for work, not ever a toe in the sand? Of the 3.5 million truck drivers, only 8% exercise regularly compared to 49% of the general population. (according to researchers led by Dr. Jarett Berry at UT Southwestern Medical Center) A report from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that, “Long-haul truck drivers are twice as likely to be obese compared to the general U.S. adult working population. Additionally, 88% of longhaul truck drivers reported having at least one risk factor (hypertension, smoking, and obesity) for chronic disease, compared to only 54% of the general U.S. adult working population.” To compliment the more than 500 exhibits including commercial driver’s products, gear, and
