MISSION STATEMENT To recognize Registered Nurses for their contributions to the communities in

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Dallas-Fort Worth Great 100 Nurses!

This year’s program is like no other in the 30 years of celebrating the work of the nurse within Dallas and Fort Worth. We are celebrating the nurses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, along with the many supporters of DFW Great 100 Nurses within the community.

2020 was named the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, celebrating the 200th Birthday of Florence Nightingale, known as a social reformer, statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She changed the way nurses were perceived during her time, just as each one of 2020 Great 100 Nurses has done.

We made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s on-site event as we work to protect our communities. Nurses are currently at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic, caring for patients and leading initiatives within the hospitals, clinics, and learning environments.

Our goal as an organization is to celebrate the nurses of Dallas-Fort Worth while bringing awareness to the work they do each day. A nurse’s role is not just at the bedside–they are active in the boardroom, government offices and leading policy and practice change for those we serve.

It is my honor and privilege to share with you the 2020 Class of Great 100 Nurses. These individuals have been nominated by their colleagues, family, or friends as exemplary caregivers. Excellence in nursing is visible through a commitment to care that exceeds the minimum standards. Regardless of the practice setting, registered nurses focus their practice on health in its very broadest sense. Nurses possess the ability to provide care that is compassionate and ethical while identifying and addressing complex situations.

The Dallas-Fort Worth Great 100 Nurses organization will celebrate these 100 nurses along with the 2021 class of winners on May 4, 2021, at the Myerson Symphony Center.

We will come together as a community to honor the nurses of Dallas-Fort Worth, who exemplify excellence in the art and science of those we serve. The criteria for the Great 100 includes leadership, compassionate care, serving as a role model, playing an active part in the community, and achievements within their nursing career. With the constantly changing environment in health care, the nurses being honored this year have achieved the highest of patient and healthcare outcomes.

stemmed from an idea by P.K. Scheerle, a registered nurse and successful entrepreneur, who founded a similar event to recognize nurses in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Thirty years ago, Dr. Beth Mancini, Ph.D, RN, Sarah Moody, MS, RN, NEA-BC, Lucy Norris, MS, RN, CENP and Judy Denison, MS, RN, NEA-BC worked with the community to create the DFW Great 100 Nurses. ”Since its inception, the DFW Great 100 Nurses has always been about lifting up nurses for recognition of their contributions to the individual patient, families and communities in which they live and work and across the continuum of care including education. The organization’s ability to support the community of nurses includes not only recognition, but scholarships to assist nurses who are pursing BSN and advanced degrees. Nurses have great impact and this organization allows for that to be recognized”, stated Past President, Dr. Cole Edmonson.

The Great 100 celebration raises the awareness of the contributions of nurses to patient care, research, leadership, education and community service of more than 50,000 nurses practicing in the DFW area. In addition, the celebration builds the image of nursing through positive reinforcement of the profession as a scientific art and the recognition of those who exemplify excellence. “The Dallas-Fort Worth Great 100 Nurses has allowed these amazing stories to be about each nurse who is nominated; stories of courage, strength, resilience, and the lives of each patient they touch. Not only at the bedside, but in the boardroom, schoolroom, and throughout the community.” stated Victoria England, MBA, BSN, RN, NE-BC President of the DFW Great 100.

It is a special honor for a nurse to be nominated by family members, patients, peers, former teachers, physicians, and administrators. Over the past twenty-nine years, this award has become recognized throughout the nursing community in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex as an esteemed honor and prestigious accomplishment.

LAUREN HOOD The DFW Great 100 Nurses Baccalaureate Nursing Scholarship Honoree Baylor University – Louise Herrington School of Nursing | Pursuing a BSN degree I plan to use my nursing education to work in Pediatric Oncology or the NICU. I have some familial experience in both departments that really touched me. Both Pediatric Oncology and the NICU are departments that can benefit nursing in many ways. In general, we can never have TOO many nurses and especially in departments that are emotionally difficult. This time frame in people’s lives is hard and our job is to make the healing process as smooth and easy on the family as possible, as you are not only taking care of the patient but the family as well. I want to do everything I can to help those who can’t help themselves, whether they are immobile, weak or too sick. Being a nurse is a blessing in itself, with the ability to save those around you and care for them in the worst parts of their life. We can impact them even with the smallest thing, by talking with them, sitting with them, or even laughing and crying with them. Our job is unlike any other, and I think that with my education I can impact either of those fields and those whom I come across in my career.

KALEY HUCKABY The DFW Great 100 Nurses Baccalaureate Nursing Scholarship Honoree The University of Texas at Arlington | Pursuing a BSN degree As an associate degree prepared nurse having a bachelor’s degree will better prepare me to care for my patients and practice to the fullest extent. It will expand my career opportunities and professional responsibilities.

This scholarship can help me financially complete my goal of obtaining my Bachelors of Science in Nursing.

My current goal is completing the nurse residency at Methodist Charlton while also taking RN to BSN classes.

I plan on finishing the remaining seven classes by the Fall semester 2020. My future goal would be to continue my education and obtain my MSN.

VIJI GEORGE The Paulette Burns Graduate Nursing Scholarship Honoree University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences | Pursuing a DNP Degree Nursing has given me everything in my life: it started as a means for living and soon became my meaning for living. More than a profession, nursing is a passion for me. At an early age, I knew I loved people and wanted to help others. Nursing seemed the best profession to pursue. I got the opportunity to be one of the twentyfive candidates across India to be trained as a Military Nursing Officer. With a career spanning more than twenty-seven years, my professional nursing experience includes clinical nursing, education, administration, staff development and promotion of professional development, and clinical excellence. I have been fortunate to work in India, Kuwait and now in the United States under different health care organizations and in different roles. After graduation, I am planning to put the DNP education to best use for my work, for fellow nurses and for the nursing profession as a whole.

RECOGNIZING NURSES

NOMINATION AND SELECTION COMMITTEE PROCESS The nomination process opens in September each year on the DFW Great 100 Website (dfwgreat100nurses.com) with an online form that is completed by the nominator along with a demographic sheet on the person they are nominating. The nomination process remains open until the first week in of January. The nominations are matched with a number using a third party vendor. This year was our first year to have the Selection Committee review and score all nominations online, eliminating the printing of massive amounts of submissions and scoring sheets.

The top 100 nominations are then reviewed and verified to ensure that they have not received the award in the past, and their license is checked using the state Board of Nursing website.

The Selection Committee process opens in November each year on the DFW Great 100 Website (dfwgreat100nurses.com). Individuals are is chosen from those nurses who apply and submit an online application to be a part of the Selection Committee.

The Selection Committee is made up of nurses from all areas of practice, and organizations. Individuals are selected from those who have served on the Committee before, along with those new to the process. The nominations are redacted with no mention of a name or work place.

Two separate nurses review the nomination, and then the scores using a scoring criteria sheet is added together and divided. If there is a large range between the two scores or a tie the nomination is then reviewed by a third reviewer.

The board members are not active in the selection process.
