WELCOME TO THE FESTIVAL from the Director

We’re thrilled to welcome you to the 62nd annual Reno Jazz Festival!

Since our return last year to a completely in-person & non-competitive event, we were humbled by the overwhelmingly positive response of Festival participants. In our efforts to continue building an equitable future of jazz, we hope to index into the elements of music that drew us to it in the first place — namely, the aspects of community-building, freedom of expression, and the joy!

We are so honored to be hosting each of you this year — whether you’re a student, director, parent, or a longtime jazz fan.

For the 2024 Festival, we’ve increased our offering of daytime workshops and concerts, and have continued our partnership with faculty and students from the Berklee College of Music’s Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. I encourage you all to attend their workshop and conversation focused on setting new standards in jazz, as well as their stellar trio in performance during our Friday daytime activities. You’ll even get a third chance to see them on Saturday evening during the Festival Showcase.

Immediately following the Terell Stafford + Manzanita Quintet Concert on Thursday, April 25, we’ll be having our Student Jam Session at 10:00pm at Laughing Planet Cafe on N. Virginia Street. We hope that following what is sure to be an inspiring evening concert, the students will want to channel some of that inspiration and passion for music witnessed onstage into their own playing.

Friday evening features our Pro Jam Session with an all-star house band of some of the brightest voices in jazz today — saxophonist Nicole McCabe, pianist Naomi Nakanishi, bassist Hannah Marks, and drummer Matt Mayhall, who is also an alumnus of our Program In Jazz & Improvisational Music!

Our 2024 Festival composer is the incredible saxophonist and educator, Jessika Smith. You'll have the opportunity to learn from Jessika as an Artist Educator and by attending her RJF Composer Insights + Q&A clinic as part of our commitment to commission new music from underrepresented communities in jazz.

We do hope you bought tickets to our Friday night headliner, GEORGE, too! The brainchild of genre-defying composer/ percussionist John Hollenbeck, saxophonist/flautist Anna Webber, and vocalists/keyboardists Sarah Rossy and Chiquita Magic, there’s no doubt that their performance will be sure to broaden the musical horizons of our audiences.

We are so honored to be hosting each of you this year — whether you’re a student, director, parent, or a longtime jazz fan. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for participating in and supporting the future of music and music education.

62nd ANNUAL RENO JAZZ FESTIVAL 5

Terell Stafford

Friday, April 25 · 7:30 p.m.

Nightingale Concert Hall, Church Fine Arts Building

Terell Stafford, acclaimed trumpet player based in New York, has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner.

Stafford is recognized as an incredibly gifted and versatile player, he combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism. Stafford’s exceptionally expressive and well-defined musical talent allows him to dance in and around the rich trumpet tradition of his predecessors while making his own inroads.

6 UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO

+ Manzanita Quintet

Joining trumpet-composer Terell Stafford on stage is Northern Nevada’s very own Manzanita Quintet — Adam Benjamin, Peter Epstein, Hans Halt, Andrew Heglund and Josh D. Reed.

Comprising core faculty members of the University of Nevada, Reno’s Program in Jazz & Improvisational Music, Manzanita Quintet (formerly The Collective) is recognized as one of the most imaginative and distinctive jazz ensembles in the northwestern U.S.

The talented group has released four albums and is actively performing, recording and teaching throughout the world. Manzanita Quintet’s latest album, “Osmosis,” released in February 2023, features a set of fresh, original compositions.

62nd ANNUAL RENO JAZZ FESTIVAL 7

GEORGE

Friday, April 26 · 7:30 p.m.

Nightingale Concert Hall, Church Fine Arts Building

With the moniker derived from the Greek word georgos meaning “farmer” and “earthworker,” John Hollenbeck formed GEORGE during the COVID pandemic.

As heard on their 2023 debut recording, "Letters to George," the members work in tandem to excavate and create intense and intriguing music, the sound of which defies categories and labels. Hollenbeck — an award-winning, genre-crossing composer and percussionist — is joined by his equallyesteemed bandmates Anna Webber (sax/flute), Sarah Rossy (voice/keyboards), and Chiquita Magic (keyboards/voice).

Anna Webber is a flautist, saxophonist, and composer whose interests and work live in the aesthetic overlap between avant-garde jazz and new classical music.

Sarah Rossy is a vocalist, keyboardist, composer, and producer, combining live electronic processing with jazz, folk, and Arabic music to create autobiographical, ethereal, and socially-outspoken soundscapes.

Chiquita Magic is a Latinx artist/producer who uses microtonal synthesizers, her voice, and a drum machine to create a unique sound that can be described as futuristic electro pop.

Genre-crossing composer/percussionist John Hollenbeck has gained widespread recognition as the driving force behind the unclassifiable Claudia Quintet and the ambitious John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, groups with roots in jazz, world music, and contemporary composition.

Elsewhere on ‘Letters to George,’ the group moves into different sonic dimensions, even venturing a spooked-out cover of Sonny Bono’s ‘Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down),’ best known for hit versions by Cher and Nancy Sinatra. The album’s gratis track on Bandcamp is a nightmare vision titled ‘Can You Imagine This?’ — opening with a scream, and thrashing forward in a coordinated blur.”

— Nate Chinen, WRTI 90.1

8 UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO

+ University of Nevada, Reno’s Jazz Lab I

Under the direction of Josh D. Reed, the University of Nevada, Reno's flagship student jazz ensemble, Jazz Lab I, takes the stage. The group will perform large ensemble works by John Hollenbeck and an original composition by their bassist, Zack Teran.

Partnering for Equity in Jazz

The esteemed Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice is working to change the way jazz is perceived and presented. Its ultimate goal is a future of jazz that, unlike the past, illuminates, embraces and fosters all of its creative contributors, regardless of gender and race.

In addition, the Festival is dedicated to hiring artists and educators from underrepresented communities in jazz and annually commissions new music from underrepresented communities in jazz.
