MIAMI ART DEALER KATE MORGAN WORKED A HIGH DRAMA LOOK IN A CUSTOM INBAL DROR DRESS THE DRESS “I was completely charmed by the fact Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had stayed at our wedding venue, Burghley House in Peterborough, so I referred to historical photographs and paintings of Victorian and royal weddings to draw inspiration for our big day and my look. I wanted my wedding dress to make people wonder if it could possibly be a family heirloom. My gown was by Inbal Dror (inbaldror.com), but my mother and I designed the custom add-ons with help from Miami Atelier (miamiatelier. com) and Ever After boutique (everafterbridalboutique.ca). It took four seamstresses, a hundred yards of tulle and lace and nearly two weeks to bring my dream dress to fruition and it was a complete honour to wear such a masterpiece!”

THE TRAIN “I loved the idea of staying in my dress the entire night and not changing into a second dress for dancing, however I wanted a very dramatic train. THE BELT “I loved the idea of a cummerbund because it was such a powerful statement for a woman historically, so I made sure the belt on my overskirt was thick to reflect that.”

THE VEIL “Initially, I wanted to have my hair up and I liked the idea of a birdcage fascinator, but I really struggled to find one that suited my dress. For a while, I resisted a veil. Now that I look back on my pictures, I am so glad I changed my mind. I chose one with Swarovski crystals dotted along the edge, which danced in the candlelight during the ceremony.”

“Our vibe for the day was very stripped back, natural and slightly alternative. We were married in a field and I knew I didn’t want a traditional, heavy dress. My hunt for the perfect gown was all about the back detail. I absolutely loved dresses by Willowby by Watters (watters.com) and the ladies at La Creme Brides (lacreme-brides. co.uk) really made an effort to get to know me, my body shape and the feel for our day, so they could guide me in the right direction. Comfort was a big thing I hated the idea of having to breathe in all day or have straps that kept falling down, so the seamstress made sure that my alterations were perfect. My dress had interest from every angle, from the tattoo back to the cut-out sides and lace detailing on the front. There are eyes on you all day from all directions and it was so nice that the photographer was able to shoot naturally from wherever she needed without me thinking ‘is this a good side?!’”
THE SHOES “My stunning Christian Louboutin heels were a special gift from my mum. I thought I would never be able to walk in them so I had two other pairs of shoes in reserve, just in case, but on the day I didn’t even think about my feet hurting!” 68 • PERFECT WEDDING

SHADES OF GREEN “I loved the idea of soft, sage green bridesmaid dresses with an easygoing vibe to match our outdoor festival wedding. Initially we looked at matching dresses, but it became difficult to nail down, so I set a £100 budget for each of my three bridesmaids and gave them some direction on colour, and they each bought their own (Debenhams, ASOS and Phase Eight). They looked beautiful – they didn’t buy them together, so I was amazed when we hung them up the night before and all the shades blended perfectly. Not sure where to start? Here are those all-important ceremony details…
T
he first thing to do is talk openly with your fiancé about the day you want. The main ceremony options are:
1. CHURCH OF ENGLAND You may have to attend a number of Sunday services beforehand. The marriage can be authorised by calling banns on three consecutive Sundays three months before the day, or by obtaining a common licence. Church fees are from £456 in your home parish, with extra costs for choir, organ, etc. In Scotland, banns aren’t necessary, but 15 days’ notice must be given at a register office. 2. ROMAN CATHOLIC Take your baptism and confirmation certificates to your priest at least six months before — if one of you is unbaptised then the priest needs to give permission. You may have to attend marriage preparation talks and Mass for six weeks before your wedding day. Visit your local superintendent registrar to give notice and obtain your marriage licence. Fees vary. 3. JEWISH You’ll need one application for your local register office and one for the religious authorities.
4. CIVIL CEREMONY Book your slot at a register office less than 12 months and more than 17 days in advance. You must have been resident in England/Wales for seven days before visiting your local registrar to give notice, and the fee is £35 each to give notice. A register office wedding costs £46. If the ceremony is held elsewhere, you’ll need to pay for a registrar to attend.

What is the difference between civil partnership and marriage? A: Apart from the wording and process of the actual ceremonies, the main differences come down to legalities. Can I convert my civil partnership to a marriage? A: Yes – you can visit your local register office for a straightforward conversion or have a ceremony at an approved venue with a registrar. Can same-sex couples have a church wedding? A: Yes, but only if the governing body of the religious organisation has opted in to consent of same-sex marriage, the individual minister is happy to conduct the marriage and the church itself is registered for same-sex ceremonies.

eing a wedding planner, I thought that it would be fairly straightforward finding a venue, but I was wrong! We looked at a few places and I have to admit, I felt quite disheartened. Then we found The Larmer Tree Gardens. We went to look round on a gloriously sunny Sunday morning in August with our parents and we both fell in love with it. Despite it being a beautiful Victorian pleasure garden, it was actually the inside space that we loved. Getting married in December, we knew the whole day would take place inside and the stunning Jubilee Hall, built for the Jubilee of Queen Victoria, and the adjoining Pavilion, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, looked like the perfect setting for our romantic, candlelit-vision of our wedding day. With the wedding only being a week or so before Christmas, we were both very clear that the theme would be ‘Winter’ and not ‘Christmas’, so much so that the staff even agreed to remove

the Christmas Trees at the venue for us! We wanted soft lighting and seasonal flowers, but not baubles and crackers. The only nod we made to Christmas was the delicious mulled wine we offered our guests on arrival at the reception. We didn’t have a formal, sit-down wedding breakfast and instead opted for more of a cocktail lounge set up, with a tasting menu of around five or six courses. This allowed us to enjoy the incredible food whilst mingling with our guests. A lot of people were unsure what to expect before the day but it worked out exactly as we had hoped. Our ceremony was held at Christchurch Priory, which had special meaning for me as I was christened there and went to the Priory school. It is the most incredible church and it felt truly magical all lit up with candles. I was much more nervous than I thought I would be, but that soon disappeared. We had the most incredible day and it still feels like the best dream I have ever had.

hen we first started to discuss what we wanted from our wedding, David and I wrote a list of things that we each felt were key components of a good day. Items one and two on both of our lists were plenty of good food and plenty of good wine. Having sampled the quality of the catering at Thornbridge Hall before, we knew that this exclusive private home was the place for us. The look of our day was very classic and elegant the primary colours were navy, silver and grey with the smallest hints of blush pink. My husband, David, was the creative driving force and I knew I could trust him to get it right whilst I kept an eye on the budget and took care of the admin an equally important job. David grew up with his 86 year-old grandfather, who is a prize-winning horticulturist, so it was important to us that the flowers were show-stopping, without being too gaudy or flash. We used eucalyptus, brunia balls, sweet avalanche roses and white anemones, which have a navy centre and sat nicely alongside blue steel berries.

My beautiful lace dress was by British designer Suzanne Neville. I wanted a big dress as I am a strong character but I didn’t want anything too over the top! The skirt was made from the most amazing material and the way it moved when I twirled was simply magical. David wore a midnight blue, bespoke tuxedo which was inspired by Sean Connery his style icon! Our wedding breakfast was hosted in the stunning Carriage House, which is an old converted stable block encased by a glass orangery, beaming with light from the adjoining courtyard. Walking in when they announced us as ‘the new Mr and Mrs Lister’ was completely overwhelming the roar from our 200 guests was earth shattering! Lots of people say that your wedding day is all about you but we saw it as an opportunity to step back and look at all that we have achieved together and the relationships we share. Having everyone there together was just amazing.

lice and I met in Vietnam, whilst we were both teaching at the British International School in Ho Chi Minh City. We lived there for three years, so we decided to give our wedding a Vietnamese theme. Many of Alice’s family members live in Cheshire and this is a part of the country we particularly love. We wanted a venue where we could hold the ceremony and reception in one place, as well as the option to have an outdoor ceremony if the weather was good. Sandhole ticked all the boxes, as well as being in a beautiful setting overlooking the lake and countryside. It also had plenty of rooms to accommodate our guests who were travelling from all over the world. We got engaged in Hoi An, a place in Vietnam famous for its colourful lanterns, so we decorated the barn with lanterns shipped over and chose a cake with lots of layers that reflected the famous rice terraces of Northern Vietnam. Our favours were colourful wooden dragonflies that balanced on the wine glasses for each

of our guests and we placed conical hats on the backs of all the chairs. We made our own table plan display using a big colourful map of Vietnam with tables named after different places Alice and I had visited together. For our guestbook we asked everyone to sign corks, which are now in a box frame surrounding our favourite wedding photo. We went for a beautiful blue colour scheme throughout the day, with our bridesmaids wearing the same dresses in different shades of blue. It all looked really striking against the backdrop of the rustic wooden barn. When we saw each other in our dresses for the first time, it was a really special moment. I wasn’t 100 per cent certain about the style of mine at first, but when I tried on the beaded bolero, it completely changed the entire look and I absolutely loved it. Alice’s dress was bigger than mine and she loved swooshing around in it! Having everyone we care about most in the world under one roof was just brilliant. We loved every minute!

R
ichmond Park has many wonderful memories attached to it for me. As a child I spent lots of summer days there with my mum, dad, sister and late grandmother, having picnics and riding our bikes. We loved watching the wild deer in the beautiful lush surroundings. Oliver and I then purchased our first home nearby, so it soon became a regular spot for both of us to visit. It seemed so apt to hold our wedding at Pembroke Lodge and in the stunning park itself. For our styling, we wanted to take inspiration from the surroundings and bring the outside in. Our theme was whimsical woodland with muted pastels, creams, nude, pinks, and peaches, mixed with wild foliage pieces all arranged in a natural and organic style. We also wanted to add some elegant, traditional elements in keeping with the beautiful Grade-II listed Georgian mansion where the wedding took place. We used real antlers to adorn fireplaces, logs as tealights for tables and miniature brass stag and doe deer to decorate the cake with.

OLIVER’S BOWTIE AND BESPOKE TUX SET HIM APART FROM THE REST
To give our wedding a sentimental feel, we used my late grandmother’s old tennis rackets, my late grandad’s accordion and Oliver’s late grandad’s vintage camera collection to decorate the fireplace in the bar area. This created a vintage area of interest and a great talking point amongst the family. I fell in love with my dress because it accentuated my shape and the lace pattern resembled an oak leaf, which tied in with our woodland theme. When I walked into the ceremony room and saw the sea of faces all looking at me, with Oliver in his tux and the harp playing, I was overwhelmed with emotion and cried happy tears! Afterwards, we went into Richmond Park for photos being there, dressed in our finest clothes drinking champagne was really special. It was the most incredible day and the sun shone for us too we couldn’t have wished for a better celebration!

fter Carson popped the question, I was lamenting about all the overwhelming choices with my mum and said “I wish I could just show up with everything done!” My mum said “Well, why not?” and that was the beginning of my surprise wedding. My mum planned our whole day, including choosing the venue she knew exactly what we’d like. It was rustic yet glamorous, with a limestone chapel and grand ballroom. She also made lots of the details, such as our stationery, a welcome sign, guestbook, the menus and venue backdrops. One thing I was involved with was the dress! I absolutely loved shopping for dresses there’s nothing better than being pampered all day and playing dress-up in stunning gowns. I tried on more than a dozen dresses, but when I slipped into a fitted gown by La Sposa, I just knew. Before I even looked into the mirror it took my breath away I fell in love with the way it made me feel. When Carson proposed, he gave me two journals one for him and one for me and told me to write a letter or prayer for our marriage every day of our engagement and he would do the same. When I was getting ready in the bridal suite, a beautiful box was delivered to me. It was his journal, filled with 365 letters and prayers. It was the most romantic moment of my life, and the rest of the day was just as perfect!
