At Deyes Sixth Form we aim to deliver a 'world class' curriculum fit for the 21st Century which meets individual needs and those of the wider community, be that local or global.

As such, the curriculum rarely stands still, responding to desires, and there is constant reflection for improvement. It would be great to tailor-make a package just for you.

During your time with us we will also equip you with what we describe as the 'toolkit for success' - that is the skills required to be effective and efficient learners in Higher Education or the workplace. This is then coupled with the confidence, drive and ambition required to achieve the very best 'CV of life'; a CV and academic record that sets you apart from the crowd.

We are a large oversubscribed Sixth Form and increasingly students from other establishments are applying to join us. Mr Delaney, Director of Sixth Form will be very happy to discuss possibilities with you and answer any further questions you may have.

For students already studying at Deyes this will be arranged as part of your usual guidance in Year 11. Other students are also very welcome and should contact the school to arrange for a mutually convenient interview.

It has a long tradition of examination success and we are proud of our record of high academic achievement. Students regularly gain the highest of A Level grades and achieve above the national averages in their final examinations.

Many subjects in the Sixth Form enjoy a 100% pass rate at A Level. This allows the majority of our students to move on to a higher education course with a number of students taking up places at Oxford University and Cambridge University.

You are coming to the end of Key Stage 4 and need to be thinking carefully about the next step after your GCSE exams. Deyes High School has an excellent record of looking after all of the new entrants into its Sixth Form. We provide excellent teaching, facilities and support to help all students achieve their best possible results. Our year-by-year success as one of the largest schoolbased Sixth Forms in the region, in all study programmes, at all levels, proves our case.

COLLABORATION To ensure the maximum choice of subjects we work in collaboration with Maricourt Catholic High School and Maghull High School. Some subjects may only be available as part of the collaboration.

The idea of this booklet is to introduce you to the courses we can offer you, and the kind of Sixth Form experience that you can have. You can also find out about the Sixth Form from the point of view of some of our many students, and find out from them why they are glad they took the next step which led them here.

PATHWAYS There are accessible pathways of study in Deyes High School Sixth Form.

The pathway you choose will depend on your individual strengths. The pathway of study will be determined by your predicted grades, your learning preferences, particularly with regard to coursework and examination performance. The option combinations should link to your interests and aptitudes with your intended future progression to Higher Education or employment.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING The choice and breadth of courses at Deyes Sixth Form is a major strength, which allows our students to pursue a range of interests to a very high level. We offer many subjects that you will not have previously had the chance to study. As part of the Maghull Sixth Form Collaborative the range of courses on offer is wide and varied.

We want Sixth Formers to set the tone and standard for the school We want them to be examples of good behaviour, positive support and community spirit This is particularly true for those who choose to be appointed Prefects, but the principle applies to all senior students

We want committed students who make schoolwork their priority We want students who put this before their part time jobs We want students who are able to work independently; find work to do, especially in Private Study times, and who research and do at least two hours‘ work each night at home

We continue to review the facilities we offer, always aiming to improve them for our students‘ benefit.

We have facilities for Private Study, an excellent Library Resource Centre, very well equipped I.T. suites, and lots of pastoral support.

Sixth Formers have their own recently refurbished refreshment area and TV to enjoy at breaks and lunchtimes.

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT    

We have numerous clubs and societies for Sixth Formers to join, and help run!

There are so many musical, dance, drama and sporting activities waiting for you You can help others in Community Service periods for example, by mentoring younger students.

You can become a School Prefect. We depend on this body of seniors to keep the school working efficiently. They give so much to the atmosphere of the school.

A particular strength of our Sixth Form is the way it seeks to offer constructive support to every individual student.

Care is taken at enrolment to ensure each student is on the course that is best for him or her.

Each student‘s entry profile is carefully assessed, and on the basis of this we set individual, challenging targets.

We regularly monitor and discuss each student‘s progress with them and report to parents.

Pastoral support from Form Tutors and School Mentors is readily available, and Assistant Directors of 6th Form maintain an overview.

Careers‘ advice is freely available through Mrs J Thomas, Head of Careers Education.

If earrings are worn, these should be a single stud in each lobe. Body piercings is not allowed due to health and safety issues

Tattoos

It is illegal for under 18s to have tattoos. Any student who already has a tattoo prior to entering the Sixth Form should have it covered at all times

The LRC at Deyes High is inviting, comfortable and easy to use. Sixth Form students have access to it all day, and there are facilities for browsing, relaxed reading and reference. It is open Monday to Thursday from 8.45am to 4.30pm and 8.45am to 3.15pm on Friday

Newspapers

Mrs Harvey, the LRC Manager, is available in the library during the day, and supervises private study during lesson times.

The LRC is the ideal place for Sixth Form students to do their private study, because of the resources it can offer, but more importantly it provides the right environment for students to work. Students are reminded that they should be working silently so as not to disturb other people in the Library.

The LRC offers a wide variety of resources;

@Deyes provides our students with 15 networked PCs and access to their own colour laser printer.

Sixth Form students can use both D1 and D2 during their study periods as either a place to work quietly or for ICT based research purposes.

An additional 20 PCs are available for our Sixth Form students in U2 which is next to the Sixth Form ‗Common Room‘.

Deyes Sixth Form How do students get onto a Post - 16 course of Deyes Sixth Form STEP

ACTIONS

Students attend the KS5 Transition Evening (NEXT STEPS) to find out from subject teachers and current sixth form students about courses and life at Deyes Sixth Form.

Sixth Form application forms are due in on Monday 28th January 2013 using the paper copy enclosed in the prospectus. Students will indicate their subject choices on the application form.

Changes to subject choices can be made in consultation with Sixth Form staff up to the start of courses in September 2013

All students will be interviewed by senior member of staff following the completion of their Sixth Form Application Form in February 2013.

Students will speak to subject staff to discuss their suitability for their preferred option choices and potential career paths.

Students will be offered a conditional place at Deyes Sixth Form dependent upon their GCSE results. Final option blocks and enrolment details will be published in July 2103.

On GCSE Results‘ Day in August staff will be available to give students advice based on their GCSE results

Students will enrol at Deyes Sixth Form using the Enrolment Form that is sent to them in the summer

Deyes Sixth Form The Curriculum WHAT IS THE CURRICULUM LIKE AT DEYES SIXTH FORM?

Optional Curriculum Choose a maximum of 4 subjects from the courses available in Year 12. Usually 3 of the subjects are continued to be taken at A2 level in Year 13

Core Curriculum (a) Tutorial Programme Students have a personal tutor who is the immediate point of contact for a whole variety of matters. The tutor plays a key role in the process of student monitoring and review and through it builds an important relationship with the students, being a constant source of encouragement and guidance.

Extra curricular activities and visits At Deyes Sixth Form we believe in enhancing the experience of our students through a variety of trips and social events. These include social trips, an end of course Formal Prom, fieldwork trips, visits to museums, university visits and national and international trips.

A well being and Citizenship Education programme aims to meet the guidance needs (personal, academic and vocational/work related learning) of students as they progress through the post-16 phase. All students will follow the post 16 statutory requirement for religious education.

(c) Careers Education Information and Guidance All students have access to an individual careers interview with a Personal Adviser from the Connexions Service and the opportunity to have further interviews as the need presents itself during their time post-16.

There is careers information in the LRC, including computer access to national databases, and software programmes on Career and Higher Education choices.

Further information is available in the Sixth Form office and subject departments.

You will also have access to a wide range of guest providers and also visits to events having a ‗progression‘ focus. Students are encouraged to follow up this work through enterprise learning, university visits and careers work in a variety of activity and challenge days throughout the year.

COURSE CONTENT Enrichment is a compulsory element of the sixth form curriculum. Students will select an option at the start of the year and remain with that choice for the remainder of the academic year.

Students will have the opportunity to further develop knowledge, skills and understanding of their own and other artists‘ work. Students will be encouraged to work in a range of materials and techniques. Biology is for anyone who wishes to develop their interest and enthusiasm for how living things work.

Why study this course?

The Dance ‗A‘ Level develops the performer and choreographer and will engage all students who want to improve technically whilst broadening their knowledge of the Dancer in Action, Dance History and professional repertoire. Dance is a subject that allows you to work collaboratively with other dancers and provides opportunities for you to link with students from other disciplines.

How is the course examined?

Students complete 4 units, two of which are practically assessed by a visiting examiner. At AS these assessments take place alongside your teacher where they have input into the grading. The other units are externally assessed with an unseen written paper.

What will I Study?

In the first year the Dance A‘ Level focuses on developing student‘s technical ability to perform in either a duet or a trio. The performance material is created alongside teaching staff allowing for students input and talents to be showcased. The compositional element extents skills in creating and developing work and cumulates in the pupils creating a solo based on a stimulus that is set by the examiner.

Students gain an in-depth understanding of the Dancer in Action including how the body works, performance skills, interpretive skills and the relationship of Dance to music.

During the second year students develop their performance skills further by performing a solo in the style of a practitioner they have studied. They analyse and reconstruct professional repertoire and set this to appropriate accompaniment.

Compositional skills are also further developed with the challenge of choreographing a group dance in response to a stimulus set by the examiner. Students are responsible for organising their group rehearsals and creating a performance with a minimum of three dancers.

The theoretical unit at A2 involves the students studying a set professional work and an era in modern Dance.

Students need to be able to contextualise professional works and grasp an understanding of the social, political, historical and economical climate of that time.

What will this course prepare me for?

This course is an excellent foundations for study at a degree level, or at a specialist Dance School. It is a course that develops the whole student providing opportunities to develop vital life and leadership skills.

Future Careers Past students have progressed to a range of universities such as Liverpool John Moores, Edge Hill and Leeds University. A significant number of them are now working within the profession or have furthered their training to enter the teaching profession.

The Drama Department forms part of a thriving Performing Arts Faculty. We have three teachers who offer opportunities for a wide range of learning in many aspects of drama and theatre. Theatre Studies is an extremely popular course, which enables students to build on skills learnt in theatre and analyse social, cultural and political aspects of history.

Unit 1  This unit introduces students to the content of plays written for the theatre. They will learn how to analyse plays in a variety of ways so that they become familiar with the way written plays can be interpreted for realisation in performance.  This is an internally unit and requires students to explore two contrasting play texts, chosen by the centre, in a practical and active way.

Unit 2  This unit offers students the chance to demonstrate skills in a performance environment. The knowledge and understanding gained during the study of two plays in Unit 1 can now be applied with a view to delivering a performance to an audience.  This is an externally unit. The first section requires students to offer either a monologue or duologue. The second section requires students to contribute to a performance of a professionally published play by a known writer.

The course is an excellent foundation for study at degree level or at a specialist establishment for the Performing Arts.
