DID YOU KNOW? ANTIGUA 1.

Antigua is one of the 2 major islands that make up the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. The country is nicknamed “Land of 365 Beaches” due to the many beaches surrounding the islands. Of course, with” one beach for every day of the year”, the country attracts more than 700,000 visitors every year.

2. Antigua, is about 22 kilometres (14 miles) long and 18 kilometres (11 miles) wide, encompassing 281 square kilometres (108 square miles).

3. Antigua became an independent state within the Commonwealth of Nations on 1st November 1981 after serving 349 years as a British colony.

4. As of 1 January 2016, the population of Antigua and Barbuda was estimated to be 92,295 people.

5. The island’s highest point is Mount Obama (formerly Boggy Peak), the remnant of a volcanic crater rising 402 meters (1319 feet). It was known as the Boggy Peak until 4 August 2009, when it was renamed after Barack Obama who has a birthday on this day.

6. The national dish is fungie (pronounced “foon-jee”) and pepper pot. Fungie is a dish that’s similar to Italian Polenta, made mostly with cornmeal.

7. Antiguans love cricket, hence, cricket being the country’s national sport. To quote a local, Cricket in Antigua “is more of a religion than a mere sport.” It is played everywhere and at any time. Other popular sports include football, boat racing and surfing.

8. Famous people who have lived or owned homes on the island include Oprah Winfrey, author Jamaica Kincaid, the fashion designer Giorgio Armani, Richard Branson of Virgin Atlantic and Eric Clapton who built a drug and rehabilitation centre on the island.

9. Antigua’s carnival is celebrated on the dates of its emancipation of slavery which occurred at the end of July to early August. It is a ten-day celebration filled with colourful costumes, live music and parades. The most important day is “J’ouvert” when steel and brass bands play all over the island.

EDITORS NOTE Domination is shown in every aspect of life and in almost all areas of the entertainment sector male controls the spectrum. Reggae Dancehall Calypso Soca no difference men have always held the forefront from the offset but every so often a female comes and add some source to the mix stirring the status quo and disrupting the Natural balance of things so it will never be the same again.

For a music that has not yet transcended the Caribbean in terms of monetary value for major record labels and as yet to be classified as a genre on the major music platforms soca is definitely making its way to the forefront of the musical spectrum and one as to ask, why as this taken so long? In London alone over a million people converge on the streets for 2days on a bank holiday weekend to bask in this musical treat and festivity.

Enduring the pressures of a male dominated field as created a true diamond. This lady as stayed consistent and relevant since she stepped on the scene in 1995. When you speak of soca and mention the females you will not have a conversation and Patrice Roberts name is not mentioned. She as toiled laboured endured and remained firm on the battle field to greatness. A name fit to stand alone side any males in the space of soca.

PATRICE ROBERTS ARTIST, STAGE COMMANDER AND MOTHER Written by: AC Christie

I have been a fan of Patrice Roberts for many years and have seen her transition from being under the guidance of Machel Montano to becoming an independent artist and woman in her own right. We caught up with her whilst attending the Ubersoca Cruise.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you on stage?

My boobs falling out on stage. It was devastating for me, I am a mother. I never want people to see me in that way. Everyone knows what a breast is but for your private part to actually fall out whilst performing.

How did you deal with it? I just stayed off social media.

I see you on stage and you like to kick off your heels on stage...

That’s not deliberate. My shoes literally hurt, I like to be comfortable. I like to be in my performance and the heels kinda keep me back.

How difficult was the transition for you from calypso to soca?

Calypso speaks more on politics and what’s going on around you. It is kinda laid back. Soca music is more energetic, upbeat. You have to learn how to command the crowd. It was difficult for me because I was a really shy person. It took me a while and people like Machel, and other big veterans showed me what to do. I’ve learnt.

I’ve learnt from travelling, from seeing them perform and have made everything my own.

What advice would you give to your 13-year-old self?

Why did you take so long to have confidence in yourself? Can’t you see that you are beautiful, and people love you? The negative things that people say or said 7.

about you about you do not determine the way who you are. Love yourself, be confident and keep pushing.

What is the main difference between Patrice Roberts on stage and Patrice Roberts at home on a Sunday evening apart from being a mother?

The difference is that on a Sunday evening, Patrice loves to cook, loves to decorate, loves to do things at home. I am a home person; I don’t really like to go out. Patrice on stage is sexier, takes risks kind of person.

If you could change one thing about the soca industry, what would it be and why?

The fact that most females are not together as we should be. If we come together, I think all soca music will go even further. Everyone is so much apart.

Are you a heels or trainer kinda lady? Heels As a female artist, do you feel men are intimidated by you and don’t come up to you? I think so. Because they never really come.

Has it always been that way? I think it has always been that way because, if you look at me, I’m not really an approachable person. It doesn’t mean that I am stuck up. I am just that person that has been through many things in this lifetime. I am 34 years and I have been through hell and back, so I think I have up this wall. But behind this wall is just somebody who is fun and happy and sad sometimes, But I think that is the reason why men do not approach me.

Your new single ‘Carry on’ from the Pop’s Guitar Riddim, what inspired it? what was the creative process and the concept behind the music video?

Carry On for me, I don’t really come up with the ideas. It’s all Problem Child, big up ‘Problem’. He’s a great writer, not only a great writer but a great artist. He came up with the concept. I think I just wanted people to see a different side of me. ‘Big Girl Now’ is me coming out of motherhood, standing on my own two feet after leaving Machel and ‘Carry On’ is just, I fancy a different side of me, the sexy side. A lot of people see me as laid back, shy. You know, so to see me in a different light. I get a lot of comments from men. I wanted everyone to see a different side and Carry On is that. To come out of the box. To stray away from the traditional, performing in a video and having a costume. I wanted people to see soca music in an international way.

What has the response been like for the song? The response has been really good.

The video has 91,000 views currently and is growing, how do you think the gate keepers of soca in Trinidad feel about this type of video?

They took it really well. I think sometimes you have to set the bar a little higher, a little different. If we stay in a box, then we will not move forward, so I always like to come out of the box a little.

Is there a body of work on the way for 2020?

I have a lot of things up my sleeve. I have already released two songs and as you can see, I am very laid back for a reason. After Ubersocacruise, it all starts.

When I think of female soca artists, Patrice Roberts immediately come to mind.

This lady has earned her battle stripes. She has gone through the fire and has emerged stronger, more confident, more determined than ever to do her work, her way. She is a woman of music, of soca. This is Patrice Roberts.

TRIPLE M NOW A MEMBER OF TEAM FOXX Written by: Abbie Tiny

Who is Triple M? Triple M, Mad Sounds!!!! That’s the jingle everyone is learning around the world. I’ve been DJ’ing for 12 years, it’s been a rollercoaster journey. I’ve performed at over 15 carnivals around the world, hundreds of clubs and bars. I run my own event brand named Remedy Events and recently became the official DJ for Recording Artist/ Producer Motto and a member of the Team Foxx Music Group.

Team foxx how did that come about?

I’ve been supporting Motto since 2014. I would play his songs in my sets and push his music on social media. Over the years we’ve met a few times at various carnivals and developed a friendship which led to me DJ’ing for him when he performs in London. At Trinidad Carnival 2019, I performed with him during his tour, that’s when we came to the decision to work towards becoming a partnership. At Miami Carnival 2019, I was surprised when they announce that I was part of Team Foxx.

It’s a great achievement in my career and it shows the power of Soca music and how it can connect people. I know there are greater things to come for this talented group! Team Foxx!

How was carnival 2019 season for you?

Fantastic. 2019 carnival season began back home in Trinidad. That was a crazy 4 weeks of just fun, laughs and alcohol. I then went on to perform at Rotterdam Carnival (Holland), Cropover (Barbados) and Spice Mas (Grenada) which was back to back. I came straight into Notting Hill Carnival (London) and I ended my season at Miami Carnival (USA).

What were you like in school?

I was a rebel at the start, the class clown, getting detention. Year 10 is when I really started to mature and focused on studying. I had strict parents so I weren’t really 11.

out patrolling the streets. I had to achieve good GCSE’s or I knew my dad wasn’t going to be happy lol. From exam time my head was in the books, I would be in front of the class taking all the notes.

At what point did you realise you wanted to be a dj?

In secondary school. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, having always had a passion for music, when faced with the decision to follow an academic or creative path, I followed music on studied Music technology, I discovered my passion for DJ’ing.

Which 4 words describes you best?

I would definitely start with cheeky then I would go with ambitious, playful and spontaneous.

What is the most memorable moment as a Dj? That’s a hard question, one that really stands out is having the honour of introducing Machel Montano at Scala when he performed in London back in 2014. I was freaking out, I was young and didn’t have a clue what to say. I asking Martin Jay for some advice and that calmed me. I remember saying something like, “Welcome on stage, the king of soca, Machel Montanooooooo” and the response was nuts!

What does soca mean to you?

Soca is a culture, a feeling, a release. It brings happiness to me and so many others.

Soca isn’t just a genre of music, it’s a movement, an escape and most of all it is a lifestyle!

If you had magical powers, name one thing about the soca industry that you would change and why?

I wish that the Soca industry could be a lot more lucrative. I would want to see multi-million pound deals being made between Artists & Record Labels. Make Soca a genre on iTunes.

What is your top 10 tracks of the 2019 carnival season?

Who is Wetty Beatz?

Wetty Beatz is an international producer, song writer, sound engineer and artiste.

Originally from Union Island in St.Vincent and the Grenadines but currently based in Paris, France.

How did the name come about?

Wetty was a nickname from my early childhood and after I started making beats, it kinda made sense to put the two together and Wetty Beatz was born.

Was music your first love?

Yes I’d say so. I was very much into music since I could remember You are the raining Europe and United Kingdom’s Soca Monarch, how does it feel?

It’s a great feeling being that it’s my first soca monarch Title. I have won a few awards in the past but this is my biggest to date. Honoured to be a part of history in terms of the growth of the soca scene in Europe.

What inspired your song Syé pa mélé’ and what does it mean?

Sye pa mele means to do you. Do what you want to do without fear of what others may think. I feel like often times we hold ourselves back so as well of the message of liberation, I also decided to experiment with creole and bouyon and challenge myself that little bit more and I wasn’t afraid whether it would get a good reception or not. It turns out that people love it and it’s a soca monarch winner.

What made you decide to enter the competition?

That was the right thing for me and it came at the right time. It came at a point 14.

where I am shifting my focus towards being an artiste, so this was a great platform to re-introduce myself to my long time fans and gain new ones at the same time.

This is actually my second soca monarch competition, I entered St Vincent soca monarch in 2016.

How did you find the experience?

The overall experience was good. The organisers of the EUKSM did a pretty good job considering it was their first time hosting it. I had a really supportive team behind me as well, so that took any unnecessary pressures from me so I could really focus on delivering an A1 performance.

Will you be defending your crown in 2020? More than likely ..Yes Are you looking to enter any other Soca Monarch competitions?

Not at the moment, but if the right energy hits at the time then possibly. It also has to be for the right reasons and it has to make sense and not just for the sake of entering.

You are also known as a writer and producer, what do you find to be the hardest part of the transition in to a full-time artist?

I will always be a writer and producer behind the scenes but more so for myself.

One of the hardest parts of the transition is saying no to writing and producing for other artists or at least cutting down on that side of things. This would free up the more time to focus on the artist element of Wetty Beatz.

You are current single over head a collaboration with Triniboi Joocie what inspired that song and collob?

We created bottle over head at my studio in Paris. Joocie came over for a couple days and we had a creative session and during the session we were watching one of Majah Hype’s skits about botte service at the club and the idea was born from that. A few moments later, we had a hit on our hands. Bottle over head is available on your favourite streaming platforms so go check it out.

How as the response for the song been?

The reception has been crazy. Since the release, it has taken off in a big way and is a favourite with the djs and the fans alike. The radio stations has the song on rotation and various blogs etc have also been running with it.

What do you think would help the soca scene elevate?

If everyone do their bit, then I think the scene can grow at a much faster rate than it is right now. From the artistes/producers putting out good music to the Djs playing said music and not just playing for the forward. The way we package the product of soca is also important - the visuals, the branding, the promo materials, the venues.

Who is The Rara an explain the name?

The Rara has many connotations.

1 million views for elegance, how did you feel when you found out about that?

I didn’t feel any different than I did the day before.

Did you expect the song to do so well?

Yes, we did, me and my team believed in this song and believe it had no limits.

Given the success of the song, what do you think you could have down differently that would have pushed the song to even greater heights?

I believe having more knowledge about the dancehall industry and how it works would have put us in a better position to properly push the song more strategically.

Do you feel you have the support of the dancehall community in the uk?

Yes, I’ve been putting in the work and the successes of elegance shows the support of the people.

At what point did you realise how successful elegance was?

When the song was leaked, I had no idea it was out then I found out all I saw was the streaming number just climbing and climbing.

What advice would you give your 13-year-old self?

Nothing, I believe all ive been through has helped to shaped and mole me into this person I am today and I’m happy with whom I have become and the path I am on.

Your new release Piña Colada, why another ladies’ song as your follow up song to elegance?

Ladies song? I wouldn’t say it is a lady’s song, it’s just a song written from a man’s point of view.

What inspired your new release?

Time really, time and new experiences.

You released the song and video very closely, is this due to lessons learnt from the way you promoted your previous release how do you think this project will benefit from this strategy?

It was the vision of the team. Only time will tell but we are confident in our moves and strategies; Remember every weh mi tek a Louis V now.

How as the feedback been for your new project?

So far, the feedbacks have been all positive, the djs are playing the trace the video is streaming nicely the support is good. It’s all been positive.

Will this be your only release this year?

You just have to keep watching my social, only time will tell.

Is there an Ep, Album or any body of work in the making, what can we look forward to in the next 6months or 2020?

Expect the unexpected, we are always in the studio.

What has been your most memorable moment in the last year?

Being on Kojo Funds tour in January alongside Alicai Harley. Dj Nate’s Caribbean Rocks with Dexta Daps, Pressa, Motto, K More and others.

YESHWA RICARDO MCKENZIE

Ricardo McKenzie known as “YESHWA” Singer/songwriter who is a dancehall/ reggae artist from the small community of George’s Plain Westmoreland, located at the western region of Jamaica. The name Yeshwa is from the Greek word yeshwant and means; one who attains glory or success.

You currently have a few tracks promoting, is this how you normally push your music or a new strategy? If yes what made you decide to work like this?

Yes, this is how I normally promote my tracks through the different media platforms. I also work from and independent perspective. As you can see the music fraternity took a major leap forward when Artists discovered the opportunity to publish their music independently through various publishing houses. This opened the doors for new upcoming acts such as myself to channel my music to the world in the correct order.

Your latest single evil eye is a collaboration with Jafrass, what inspired the track and how did the collaboration come about?

This track was inspired by a series of events I experienced and also the harshness I see in the human race. I’ve always been a fan of Jafrass, so I decided to do the song with him, we are also both from the parish of Westmoreland.

You have a song called “Good Girl”, what inspired that song and what as the response from the fans been like for the song?

This song was inspired by the so called bad girls in society. I always know there are two sides of any story, so I choose to elaborate on the good aspect of the ladies... I have received great feedback on this track because most ladies can relate to it, also it was produced by a well-known producer AnjuBlaxx on the mushroom riddim.

Love money, love life, is your other single out now, tell us about this song in terms of, what the song means to you, what inspired it and how you hope it will impact those who listen to it?

Well the Inspiration for this track came from the love I have for life and money has done nothing but made my life more comfortable so I have to love it as well... lol. I hope it will impact the world to realize that the problem is never money it’s the people...

How do you feel the internet has impacted the music business and if you could implement one change in the business, what would that change be and why?

The internet has impacted the music business tremendously by giving Artists a great deal of freedom to social media and online publishing houses. To answer the second part of the question IF I could implement a change it would be to eliminate some of the politics attached to the music industry in my country, so artist stand a better chance of getting a break in the industry.

If you could open up a show for any artist who would it be and why?

I would like to open a show for Sean Paul, I really like his sound and style of music and I appreciate his musical contribution to his country.

What inspires your creativity?

My creativity is inspired by the natural events of my life also by the notion that music is my gift from Jah. What is the one hope you have for the genre Dancehall?

That it will excel to all corners of the world.

What do you wish people will take away from your music, when they listen to it?

Through my music I want people to realize that we are all one and the same only in different packages.

What musicians inspired or motivated you in your music journey?

Bob Marley and the wailers had always managed to motivate and uplift my spirit on my musical journey.

What advice would you give to the younger generation coming into the music business?

I would advise the younger generation coming into the music business to edify themselves about the business aspects of the music BUISNES Also to get familiar with the different publishing houses.

DWIGHT FLORENT GUITARIST TO THE STARS Written by: Keryn Nelson

When, as a teenager, Dwight Florent uploaded his first guitar cover to the internet, he had little proof that the ‘social media songster turned successful musician’ path would work for a small-island boy like himself. Yet, nearly three years after his first post, Florent was on a flight out of Saint Lucia, enroute to tour the world with legendary reggae band, Morgan Heritage. The tour invite came randomly one day via Instagram, to which the now 21-year-old said in an interview with Deyah, “Honestly, I didn’t even believe it, I came home from work and then I got the message and was like… ‘me? To be honest, there was a part of me that felt I was not ready.”

Like many notable musicians, Florent’s talent was bred in the church. His father played the guitar and as a boy, Florent naturally gravitated towards music as well, learning to play the guitar, piano and drums. Ultimately, “The guitar kind of stuck with me,” he admitted.

Gradually evolving into a musical prodigy, Florent continued to work on his craft in and outside of school. As a budding professional, he did gigs all over Saint Lucia with the band Evolucian. He later rounded up a group of young musicians to form his own band, Dynamix. Knowing the internet would help him reach more people with his music, Florent began posting Soca, guitar covers online. He mentioned, however, that he did not anticipate a world renowned band would be interested

in working with him so soon. Despite his doubts, the young guitarist said, “I told myself, ‘I’ve been waiting for this moment, that’s what I’ve been doing all this for so I might as well take advantage of the opportunity.”

While enjoying some ‘post-tour’ down time in Saint Lucia, Florent reminisced, “Things were different on tour, it was a completely different lifestyle.” The tour had taken him to countries like Kenya, France, Switzerland, Italy and across the United States. The level of professionalism in the international music scene, he says, stuck out most to him. He also managed to learn new lessons daily. “Music wise, the guys taught me to always put your best foot forward and create no room for mistakes or failures. Make sure you practice relentlessly so that once you get on stage, everything will be on point,” he shared.

Florent says although his music career is on an upward trajectory—as he is still scheduled to perform with Morgan Heritage in the coming future—he has his eyes set on another target. “I’m thinking about going to college in Atlanta, to study music. I’m young, I think many people feel like they have the passion for music and that’s enough, but for me, it’s good to have the passion and talent, but I also think it’s good to have qualifications,” he explained. As for his advice to young, aspiring musicians, Florent stated, “Do not focus on the money, if you’re passionate about something, the money will come.”

BUSINESS MONERO KIDS BOUTIQUE Written by: Tricia Blake

How did you get into your line of business?

I’ve always had a passion for dolls and needed an outlet for my creativity, I started out making and selling hair accessories and doll’s clothes, it was so popular it inspired me to take it further. Originally, I studied Criminology and worked in the criminal justice and mental health system.

How long has your business been running?

Monero Kids Boutique opened in summer 2018 and we’ve gone from strength to strength.

What has been the highlight of your business?

People’s reactions to the dolls. If you haven’t grown up seeing yourself depicted as a child in your toys and books, it can be a really emotional connection, I love seeing people’s faces light up, especially children, they love to see themselves or their friends.

What advice would you give to someone getting into the business?

Do as much research as you can and reach out to organisations for help. There are so many great enterprise schemes you can get involved with and having that support and mentoring is invaluable.

What inspired you to get into the business?

After losing my mum, dad and older brother, depressed I needed something to pour my heart into. I find making the dolls’ clothes really therapeutic. One of the dolls, Ellie, is named after my mother, who was a beautiful, graceful woman. I take inspiration from both my St Lucian heritage and my upbringing in London - I like to use Caribbean fabrics and African fabrics such as kente cloth for the clothes too. Currently we have a range of dolls in production with one for every Caribbean island!

Is this your only business, if no, what else are you currently doing and why?

Currently we have Monero Kids Boutique in Dalston and Monero House of Dolls at Blue House Yard in Wood Green.

I recently started doing dolls’ clothes-making workshops for kids, that’s a lot of fun. I love spending time with kids, their energy and enthusiasm is amazing. I started sewing as a child myself, I really enjoy passing on my skills and helping kids feel that satisfaction of being able to create something themselves. We are gearing up to host events in our main shop, several book launches planned for Black History Month also craft workshops in the pipeline, very exciting.

What advice would you give to your 14-year-old self?

Have more confidence and faith in yourself. Dyslexia can knock children’s confidence but with the right support, you can’t achieve everything you want.

If you weren’t in this line of business, what else would you be doing?

Some kind of community work. I enjoyed my working in the youth offending service, I love helping young offenders, I think I’d like to work with children more. I feel like getting on their level comes really naturally to me.

Given the chance, what is the one change you would implement in your industry and why?

Diversity in children’s books and toys. How can we tackle institutionalised racism in society when less than 5% of children’s books contain POC characters? Children need role models who look like them and to see positive representations of themselves in the media around them from a young age. I think it is improving slowly and I think there is a wider cultural shift happening but there is so much more work to be done and it really starts from addressing that bias of whiteness as the default setting.

Where do you see yourself and the business in 5 years?

A big store at Westfield where everyone can come and meet the dolls!

I’m buzzing with ideas, I’d also like to get more involved with charity organisations and youth enterprise, being a part of the community and giving back in some way is really important to me.

What is sickle cell?

Sickle cell anemia is also known as sickle cell disease (SCD). Sickle cell disease is a genetic disease of the red blood cells. Usually, red blood cells are shaped like discs, which gives them the flexibility to travel through small blood vessels. However, with sickle cell disease, the red blood cells have an abnormal crescent shape resembling a sickle. The blood cells are sticky and stiff which causes them to get trapped in small vessels. This result in a blockage of blood from reaching different body parts.

This can eventually result in pain and tissue damage.

SCD is an autosomal recessive condition. Two copies of the gene are needed to have the disease. If there is only one copy of the gene, this is called the sickle cell trait.

The most common symptoms of sickle cell anemia: •

Excessive fatigue or irritability, from anemia

Frequent infections

•

Bedwetting, from associated kidney problems

•

Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin)

•

Swelling and pain in hands and feet

•

Pain in the back, chest, arms, or legs

Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. It normally has two alpha chains and two beta chains. The four main types of sickle cell anemia are caused by different mutations in these genes.

The four main types of sickle cell anemia: 1.

Hemoglobin SS disease

The most common type of sickle cell disease is Hemoglobin SS disease. This is obtained when the hemoglobin S gene is inherited from both parents. This forms hemoglobin known as Hb SS. This is also the most severe form of sickle cell disease whereas the symptoms are experienced more intense.

2.

Hemoglobin SC disease

The second most common type of sickle cell disease is Hemoglobin SC. This form of sickle cell is obtained when the Hb C gene is inherited from one parent and the Hb S is inherited from the other. There are similarities between the symptoms for individuals with hemoglobin SS disease and hemoglobin SC disease. Nevertheless, the Hemoglobin SC disease is less severe.

Hemoglobin SB+ (beta) thalassemia

Hemoglobin SB+ (beta) thalassemia affects the beta globin gene production. Due to the minimum production of the beta protein, the the red blood cells reduce in size. Symptoms for this form of sickle cell anemia are less severe.

Hemoglobin SB 0 (Beta-zero) thalassemia

Sickle beta-zero thalassemia is the fourth type of sickle cell disease. It also involves the beta globin gene. It has similar symptoms to Hb SS anemia. However, sometimes the symptoms of beta zero thalassemia are more severe. It is associated with a poorer prognosis.

Diagnosis: The diagnosis of sickle cell anemia is determined by blood tests and Hb electrophoresis. Hb electrophoresis confirms the diagnosis of sickle cell disease.

Electrophoresis measures the different sorts of hemoglobin in the blood.

Treatment: • Immunizations which helps in preventing infections.

•

Blood transfusions improve transport of oxygen and nutrients as needed.

•

Treating underlying or associated infections is an important part of managing the crisis, as the stress of an infection can result in a sickle cell crisis.

•

Rehydration with intravenous fluids assists red blood cells in returning to their standard state.

Prognosis: The prognosis of sickle cell disease differs per person. Some patients have frequent and painful sickle cell crises, while others only seldomly have attacks.

To try and simplify all the complicated stuff, look at the diagram below. Before you ask about the Caribbean part, look it up yourself KMT.

I used to feel that Black people being the highest rates was bullshit, in my head it was the government’s plan to mess us up and make everyone think we’re nasty. But in my job, I have come to realise that there are a large number of black people not taking responsibility of their health, especially sexual health. I put this down to lack of knowledge, people feeling that they will never get caught because they select “CLEAN PEOPLE” to fuck or blatantly Expecting to just take a tablet to remedy “THE PROBLEM”, but my concern is…….. What happens when a tablet can’t actually make you better.

Common excuse to not put on a Condom are: •

IM ALLERGIC (but are you really?)

•

Sex feels better without a condom.

•

He says that he goes soft when he puts on a condom. I’ve seen it happen.

•

I can never find a condom that fits me.

•

She said she is on the pill-implant-injection-coil.

•

I feel suffocated when I use a condom.

And so much more excuses, that could fill up a page!!!

No matter what the excuse, you should use a condom, until you both are STI and HIV tested and an appropriate use of contraception has been found, unless you’re trying to have a baby. Condoms are not 100% protection, nothing is but it’s the closest you’re going to get, to keep you safe from unwanted pregnancies. Condoms are the only contraception that minimises your risk of contracting an STI and HIV and pregnancy all at the same time. Nothing else can help protect you better.

Bonus points for condom users are, that it can sometimes help you last a little longer when having sex too. There are plenty of textures, styles, flavours, colours and brands that are doing their best to increase sensitivity so try them. If you feel that your allergic there are non-latex condoms also. Dont try me.

If it looks clean and smells clean, I don’t need no condom/protection?

I find that many people and I mean black people get fooled by the conspiracy theories out there when it comes to sex, I once spoke to a man in his 30s, who said that he won’t catch anything because he is clean, he washes every day, uses 41.

So just to clear, you can use as much salt water, soap, domestos, ani-bac, douche, TCP as you like. Once you have sex without a condom you are putting yourself at risk, weather it’s a friend or a random on street. You may look at the pum pum/dick as much as you like, you can even smell it and it smells fresh like roses. It doesn’t mean anything. What people don’t seem to understand or take in, is that while sex does feel better without a condom most of the time, once intercourse occurs the bacteria or the virus will spread happily. SERENDIPITY OF SYNCHRONICITY

‘But wait deh, what ah coincidence dis?’ is a frequent phrase or question often uttered by my Caribbean grandmother growing up.

So, it’s no surprise that I often thought, “Wow, what a coincidence!” or stated, “It just showed up out of the blue!”. If like me, you have said similar? Then you were likely experiencing a moment of synchronicity.

You see, I first came across Synchronicity during my studies and even though I was somewhat intrigued by the concept, I never truly understood or appreciated its significance in my life.

At this point you might be wondering, what is this ‘synchronicity’? Well, synchronicity is defined as “the simultaneous occurrence of events that appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.” in other words, synchronicity is a meaningful coincidence.

Have you ever had the feeling of being in the flow, being in the zone, where the exact persons, ideas, and circumstances appear for you in the exact moment they are needed? Or perhaps you’ve thought about someone you have not seen in a while, and then the next day you unexpectedly bump into them? Or maybe you had a specific question and then later that day you randomly read a book or a blog giving an answer to your very question. Things as such aren’t simply just coincidences’ but can be considered moments of synchronicity.

Interestingly, synchronicity is always occurring in our lives whether we are aware of it or not. However, when we are living in alignment with our purpose and taking inspired action, that’s when we are more likely to witness these moments of meaningful coincidence.

FOODS, DRINKS & RECIPES TASTE OF THE CARIBBEAN

Fungee Fungee is the national dish of Antigua and Barbuda. It is made mainly from cornmeal and eaten alongside vegetable mash and a sauce made from tomatoes, garlic, and salted codfish. Fungi can also be served with Antiguan pepper pot (a spicy meat soup).

Recipe for Fungee Ingredients: •

4 cl water

•

2 cl yellow cornmeal

•

1 tsp. salt

•

6 okras, sliced

•

butter

Directions: 1.

Place water, okra and salt in a medium saucepan; bring to a boil. Cook until okras are done, about 5 minutes.

2. Remove about 2 cl liquid from pan.

3. Meanwhile, add cold water to cornmeal a little bit at a time until the cornmeal reaches a pasty batter. (I think that I ended up using about 1 cl cold water).

4. Add cornmeal mixture to okra water. Over low heat, stir continuously with a wooden spoon until mixture becomes fairly stiff. (I did this for about 7 minutes; I think I should have stirred for closer to 10). When the mixture breaks away clearly from the pan, the fungee is ready.

5. Butter a bowl. Turn the mixture into the bowl and shake it into the shape of the bowl. Turn it out onto a serving dish.

6. Serve with pepperpot.

1 lb. corned beef brisket, cut into pieces 1.64 lb. ham, cut across lengthwise (the original recipe didn’t specify an amount; this is what I used) 8 cl water 2 tsp vegetable oil 1 large onion, chopped 4 green onions, chopped 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 habañero pepper, seeded and minced 14 oz. can of whole tomatoes, drained 1/4 cl tomato paste 1 T. fresh chives, chopped 1/2 tsp. ground thyme 1 med. eggplant, cut into pieces 1 lb. acorn squash, peeled, seeded and cut into pieces 1/2 lb. yam, peeled and cut into pieces 1/4 lb. fresh baby spinach 16 oz can blackeyed peas, drained

•

1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

Directions: 1.

In a 4 qt. Dutch oven, bring the corned beef, ham and water to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer until the meat is tender, about 1.5 hours.

Drain the meat, reserving both the meat and the cooking liquid. Coarsely chop the ham.

2. While the meat is simmering, take the time to peel and cut all of the vegetables.

3. In the same 4 qt. Dutch oven, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion, green onions, garlic and habañero pepper. Cook, stirring often, until the onion has softened, about 4 minutes.

4. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato paste, chives and thyme, breaking up the tomatoes with a spoon. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer 10 minutes.

5. Stir in the eggplant, squash and yam. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring often. Stir in meat and reserved meat cooking liquid. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer until vegetables are done, about 20 minutes.

6. Stir in the peas and spinach. Cook until the spinach has wilted, about 5 minutes.

7. Season with pepper.

8. To serve, scoop 1-2 cups over fungee.
