17 ELECTED TO CUM LAUDE SOCIETY

I feel completely ready for next year. I see how my sister (Mallory ’22, University of Pennsylvania) loves college. Because of Dexter Southfield, she was more than prepared. She knew how to take notes, go to class, be organized, talk to teachers, manage her time, and have fun!

Describe your Dexter Southfield experience in one word: “Growth.”

Spencer credits the community—classmates, underclassmen, faculty, coaches, and “countless others”—for his successful seven years at Dexter Southfield.  “I have felt the entire School rooting for me as a student, an athlete, and an entrepreneur.” Over the past several years, Spencer and his younger brother, Justin ’26, have built a thriving multimedia sports marketing company, Locker Room Media. “People at school have been very supportive of our efforts. Coaches hired us. Kids shared our videos and built our brand through social media. The encouragement was astounding.” Spencer will expand his passion for film and media at the University of Virginia. “Leaving Dexter Southfield is bittersweet, but I am ready—academically and socially— thanks to the many people who helped me along the way.”

Clarice’s future after Dexter Southfield seemed set. With her stellar academic achievements and basketball prowess (which includes playing for Brazil’s 2023 Women’s World Cup team), multiple top Division I programs and schools were eager to recruit her.  Yet, in the fall of her senior year, Clarice made the unexpected decision to forgo collegiate basketball. “It was a tough decision, and the support from my college counselor, advisor, and teachers gave me the courage to pursue a different path than the logical and certain one.”

Clarice will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “I just returned from Campus Preview Weekend; I know it is the right place for me, and I made the right decision. I am excited for what’s next.”

Kelsey appreciates the many times throughout her Dexter Southfield career when someone pushed her to stretch beyond what she thought she could do. In Middle School, an influential teacher awoke a passion for STEM that carried her through Upper School. “She was my homeroom teacher, soccer coach, and science teacher, so she knew me well and genuinely cared about my path.” And when it came time to think about life after Dexter Southfield, her college counselor advised her to aim high. “I was reserved. I did not want to get rejected. My counselor pushed me to apply to schools I thought were out of reach, and this strategy worked.” When I identified Duke University as my ideal school, my science teacher connected me with a former student who attends Duke. Her encouragement bolstered my confidence in knowing I belong there as well.”
