A cut above the rest

The jeweller Emma Clarkson Webb has established a thriving international business in London’s Hatton Garden and empowers clients by educating them on the craftsmanship behind her pieces

When Emma began her eponymous business, she knew her goal was to open premises in the heart of Hatton Garden. Now, almost a decade on, she has achieved her dream, recently acquiring the studio above her workshop in London’s prestigious jewellery quarter.

Emma’s speciality is engagement rings created with diamonds and gemstones, a path she took when she returned to England after a spell in Hong Kong. She explains, “I’d been working for a brilliant diamond jeweller out in Asia for a few years. I then fell ill and had to move back to London. I was in my twenties and found lots of friends were getting married and asking for help with their rings.

I realised that I was advising them to find a service like the one I had been providing overseas and I discovered it was something I could offer in London.”

Shine bright

As a certified GIA gemmologist who studied jewellery design at Central Saint Martins, Emma felt that she could offer the tailored service that her friends were looking for, and ECW was born.

She explains, “The London diamond market can be overwhelming, and I offer a professional service with a personal touch. Trust is massive for ECW, and I work with people who want to build something special for their loved ones. Buying a ring should be

a wonderful experience but it’s easy to find the process daunting.”

Although Emma’s business is based in London, home is now in Hampshire where she lives with her husband Kit and their three young children. “I’ve got two little boys and an eight-month daughter. I do the school and nursery drop off and then go to my studio in Hatton Garden, where I spend the day before heading back for bathtime.”

Studio goals

In recent months her business has brought joy for Emma as she has acquired her ideal space. She explains “My greatest achievement this year has been moving into the studio. I was adamant that I didn’t want a space away from my workshop because it’s important that clients are able to sit at the jeweller’s bench and watch their pieces being brought to life. Some don’t have time but, if they wish, I can involve my clients every step of the way.”

unravel the complexity of diamonds and pricing, breaking down the characteristics of the stones to help show how they affect price. Then we go into real detail with the design once they’ve chosen their stones.”

Unlike the big brands, Emma doesn't use computer-aided design or CAD. “I celebrate the old craftsmanship. My master craftsman Steve has 32 years’ experience in Hatton Garden and used to work for Graff and Cartier. A lot of rings these days are built from CAD and are machine-made, and I love that my craftsmen work from my sketches and my pieces are hand-crafted.”

Top trendsetters

I love Hatton Garden, it's the soul of the diamond industry in London

Throughout her working day, clients may pop in for a resize or a clean and polish, and Emma will conduct design appointments. “I set aside time to discuss my client’s aspirations and build a rapport with them. A core value of my business is that we empower clients by educating them in the diamond-buying process. I help

When it comes to design trends, Emma finds that they are often celebrity-led. “Megan Fox’s asymmetrical Toi et Moi ring was massive last year, and this year clients are noticing Selena Gomez’s engagement ring. It is a marquise diamond which is an unusual cut, and I predict it will be quite a trend. That said, we also have many traditional clients who want a classic halo or trilogy design, and the oval cut is still very big.”

Whatever the cut, there is always a strong emphasis on ethical sourcing. “All our diamonds are GIA certified. We use a Canadian mine, these Canada mark diamonds are a brand of ethically sourced diamonds known for their traceability and high-quality. It’s also popular to go for an antique: round brilliant cut diamonds are easily forged so choosing one with masses of history is a great idea.”

Lifelong jewellery

Over the years, Emma has built a loyal following and she is often involved beyond a couple’s engagement. “I love being a part of each journey, whether it’s an exciting proposal, celebrating a birth, a big birthday or remodelling an inherited jewel. This is a happy, joyful job and you end up creating lifelong friendships which I adore.”

She continues, “I love Hatton Garden, it’s the soul of the diamond industry in London. The jewellery trade is quite small and it’s cool to be part of it day-to-day and, if I need a stone quickly, I can get it.” An added attraction are the culinary delights.

“The food market on Leather Lane is amazing, you can get anything – Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Portuguese, I love it.”

In recent months, Emma has been attracting international clients. “I’ve designed a great ring for this fantastic couple who live in New York and came to me via Instagram. They are both in fashion and wanted something fun and complex. It’s been an interesting process – everything’s done on Zoom and WhatsApp. There’s an enormous amount of trust because we’ve never met, and they’ve never seen the stones in person. However our videos have ten times magnification, so you can truly see the inside of a stone which is helpful for the untrained eye.”

As Emma’s business grows, she is keen to stay true to her roots. “My goal is to keep doing what I’m doing, having wonderful relationships with clients and making beautiful rings that will be handed down from generation to generation.”

So, whether you have your heart set on an asymmetrical diamond or your taste is more traditional, Emma has the talent to deliver a special piece that will last a lifetime and beyond.

Tailored design

Commission a luxury walk-in wardrobe or divine dressing room to enhance your life and add value to your home

Imagine a private sanctuary where all your clothes, shoes and handbags are stored correctly, the lighting is perfect and the vibe is welcoming and opulent. Your dream dressing room or walk-in wardrobe will inject some orderly calm into the process of choosing what to wear and make getting ready a real pleasure.

There may be a bedroom or an awkward nook that can, with skilful design, become your bespoke room. Experts that specialise in fitting cabinetry furniture in the capital include The Heritage Wardrobe Company. Head of Sales and Marketing, Delphine Drouin says, “Our typical clients are business owners and high-net-worth individuals who pride themselves on the aesthetics of their home and want to work with a company they can trust. Their clothes tend to be designer, and they may have valuable jewellery and shoe collections.”

Stylish

storage

She continues, “In recent years, dressing rooms have emerged as coveted spaces that can significantly enhance the value of your home. They provide a dedicated area to curate, organise, and elevate the daily routine. The appeal of a dressing room goes beyond practicalities, as they are a reflection of your unique style and taste.”

Dressing

rooms provide a dedicated space to curate, organise, and elevate the daily routine

In terms of current decorating trends, Rebecca Nokes, Design Director at John Lewis of Hungerford says, “Colour palettes for dressing rooms and walk-in wardrobes tend to be very neutral and sophisticated with lots of brass hardware. People often opt for our more classic ranges such as Shaker and Artisan rather than contemporary styles.

We’re seeing more dressing tables being included in designs, and islands are also popular, often with glass tops, and these are used to store everything from belts and cufflinks to jewellery and smaller items that you might like to have on show.”

Relax and reflect

Rebecca continues, “Benchseating, particularly under windows, is popular as they make use of all available space and, as well as providing storage, offer

somewhere to relax. Having mirrors everywhere not only makes it practical for getting ready but also helps increase the natural light. In terms of technology, we’re increasingly being asked to install charging drawers and USB points, as well as dedicated areas to do hair and make-up.”

A feeling of luxury is key and choosing velvet upholstery for furniture pieces, such as an ottoman or a chaise lounge in your dressing room can contribute to the

Neville

overall sense of opulence. Delphine says, “When it comes to luxury, you can’t go wrong with velvet. Its lush texture and rich appearance instantly elevate. This year’s colour trends take inspiration from the subtle, earthy tones inspired by the natural landscape. Think soft greens, warm clay tones, and blues that create a sophisticated and timeless palette for your interior.”

We’re seeing more dressing tables being included in designs, and islands are also popular

Light and bright

Lighting plays a crucial role in any dressing room, and opting for LED lighting is a step towards energy efficiency and longevity. Delphine explains, “We can seamlessly integrate LED options into your wardrobe designs, so you can bask in the glow of style and sustainability. We also recommend incorporating motion sensors and timers to control lighting, as this will not only save energy but create a lovely ambience.”

When it comes to colours, styles and storage solutions, the options for your dream dressing room are limitless and the industry experts truly have something for everyone. They are helping Londoners add value to their homes and ensure they have the space they need to dress to impress.

Leading the way

Chief Executive Andy Shepherd on the company’s extraordinary journey from a single office in south west London to the capital's leading Estate Agency

It all started in 1993 with the opening of the first Dexters office in south west London. The vision was always to provide an altogether better experience of selling, letting, buying or renting and exceed customers' expectations. Now, over 30 years later, Dexters is one of the only major residential Estate Agents that is a firm of Chartered Surveyors, regulated by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), which gives clients and customers the reassurance of working with experts who adhere to the highest standards.

With more offices in prime central London than any other agent, Dexters

continue to deliver a first-class service, forming lasting relationships with sellers and landlords built on trust. As London’s leading Estate Agent, with offices located across the capital, Dexters’ core values remain unchanged. Expert teams who understand the local market and the needs of their clients. Today, over 70 per cent of business comes from recommendations and referrals with customers coming back again and again.

Andy explains, “Our impressive growth hasn’t made us lose sight of our mission, to deliver the best results to the capital’s homeowners. The professionalism of our colleagues and their expertise is the reason why Dexters is the go-to agent when it comes to selling or letting London

property. Sellers and landlords are reassured by our presence on the high street and the knowledge that our teams visit every home to ensure we deliver the very best service.’’

We are proud to have received over 80,000 Google reviews with an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars

Dexters makes no excuse for taking a traditional approach to estate agency. We spend on average over 200 hours working on a successful transaction, so we're

confident we can get the best price for our clients. Dexters’ proactive approach to generating viewings by speaking to our London-wide database ensures we consistently deliver the best results.

Andy explains “ We work with over 300,000 customers at one time, from UK-based sellers and landlords to international clients looking to relocate. London will always be an exciting place to live and an attractive long-term investment. We support our landlords by finding first-rate tenants, largely corporate or professionals, looking for longer-term tenancies. Our primary aim is to deliver the best result for our landlords to ensure we never have empty properties. Most properties we look after are managed, as landlords trust us to care for their assets and keep them in prime condition. These managed homes receive the attention of our dedicated Property Managers, who are never more than 15 minutes away from the properties in their portfolio.’’

Andy continues, “Customer feedback is essential to the business, as we know that our clients have a choice of who they partner with. We are proud to have received over 80,000 Google reviews with an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars, a testament to the hard work of dedicated colleagues. This makes it clear to our clients how well their local office performs, as our talented teams strive to deliver an excellent customer journey and superior results every time.”

Dexters is the go-to agent when it comes to selling or letting London property

Dexters is also the UK’s first estate agency employer provider, offering colleagues a range of apprenticeships and accreditations. This commitment towards

their colleagues is why 90 per cent of managers started their careers as trainees in the business.

“We are committed to delivering outstanding training and development to our colleagues at all levels at our industry-leading Dexters Academy. We work with the sentiment that nothing is too much trouble, and our clients and customers should never have to ask twice,” explains Andy.

“This year so far has been busy for both sales and lettings, with no signs of this slowing down, there is plenty of confidence in the London market. The summer months present a window of opportunity, traditionally when landlords achieve the highest rents and sellers receive the most interest. So, if you are curious about the value of your home or are considering a move, our advice is do not wait. Our local experts will be delighted to assist and are ready to provide professional advice tailored to your needs.”

Martina Toppi’s Hyde Park & Bayswater

International interest has never been stronger in this prime location, known for its historic architecture and world-class shops and restaurants

Sitting alongside the iconic Hyde Park, this affluent area offers many luxurious properties and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. With 13 years of experience, local property expert Martina explains why demand to live here is at an all-time high.

What’s the market like at the moment?

It’s incredibly busy and we are achieving impressive prices for our clients, with buyers and tenants moving quickly when they see well-priced homes in the best locations. With more people wanting to live in the capital, Dexters carries out 50,000 viewing appointments every month, which equates to a viewing every 15 seconds during our working week. In Hyde Park and Bayswater, demand is consistently outstripping supply and competition is fierce, particularly for lettings properties. For example, we recently received multiple offers for a two bedroom apartment overlooking Cleveland Square and achieved a record price, successfully securing a tenant within 48 hours of listing the property.

What advice would you give to sellers and landlords?

First impressions matter so properties need to be well-presented and accurately priced to ensure they stand out and generate strong interest from buyers and tenants. To help you prepare your property for the market, our in-house Design & Refurbishment team offers services that range from staging a home to complete renovations, with an excellent track record of increasing rental yields. For sellers, it’s important to be prepared, instruct a solicitor in the early

stages, and choose an agent you trust. Our expert local teams spend an average of 150-200 hours on each successful transaction, ensuring a smooth process from start to finish and help our clients achieve the best results.

Dexters carries out 50,000 viewing appointments every month

Why is this area in such high demand?

Buyers and tenants are attracted to the prime location and fantastic transport links, including the Elizabeth line and rail services from Paddington. Many families come here to put down roots, thanks to the choice of outstanding local schools and large homes

on private garden squares. Bayswater has also been revitalised with significant investment and luxury new developments, contributing to the strong demand from international and corporate tenants. Many come through our Corporate Services team, who are seeing unprecedented demand and are receiving over 200 enquiries each week from embassies and major corporations looking to relocate their employees to London.

How do you market your high-end properties?

Our in-house press team are in daily contact with journalists and editors wanting to feature only the finest London homes in newspapers and magazines. Dexters works with the world’s press to showcase our clients’ properties to millions of people on an international scale. Our media resources extend to weekly features in the Financial Times and London Standard, as well as

regular coverage in luxury publications such as The London Magazine and Fabric. We also curate a selection of premium bespoke marketing materials and ensure that each property reaches the right audience of high-net-worth tenants and buyers, meaning our clients can be confident that we offer maximum exposure.

Our expert local teams spend an average of 150-200 hours on each successful transaction

What do you love most about the area?

There’s always something new to see or do, with so many independent cafés and boutique shops on your doorstep. I love the open green spaces of Hyde Park, which provide a change of pace from London’s hustle and bustle. The neighbourhood has a strong community feel, with an eclectic mix of modern developments and historic homes that add a unique character. We recently let a three bedroom apartment in a Georgian building on Gloucester Square to a corporate tenant within days of launching to the market, achieving the full asking price and exceeding the expectations of our client.

Richard Saltmer’s prime central London

Iconic landmarks, centuries of history and world-class investment opportunities continue to drive demand for the capital's highest-profile addresses

From notable townhouses to luxury penthouses with city views, demand for property across prime central London continues to soar. With more than 23 years of experience, Richard shares his insights into selling and letting the finest properties in the capital.

Who are the typical clients in prime central London?

People from all over the world want to live and invest here, London has a timeless appeal and a choice of luxurious homes. We work with many high and ultra-highnet-worth individuals and families who can expect to receive a personalised and confidential service, tailored to their unique requirements. We also work closely with our Corporate Services team who are seeing unprecedented demand and are receiving over 200 enquiries each week from embassies and major corporations looking to relocate their employees to London.

We are already in contact with over 200,000 buyers and tenants looking for a London home

Why do clients choose to work with Dexters?

We have a stronghold in prime central London with offices perfectly placed to assist clients with their high-end property needs. Locations include Mayfair, Chelsea, Westminster, South Kensington and

Notting Hill. Clients choose to work with us because we are the local experts. They are impressed by the high number of viewings and strong interest we generate. Only 3 out of every 20 viewings arranged come from online portals; the rest we generate by being proactive and picking up the phone. This success is down to our experienced and hardworking teams who arrange up to 50,000 viewing appointments every month.

We also take pride in the service we give to our clients and customers. Word of mouth is our most important form of advertising, and we come highly recommended with over 80,000 Google reviews with an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars. Our colleagues always go the extra mile to deliver a first-class service.

Do some clients want discretion?

Yes, many of our clients choose our confidential “off-market” service. We achieve great results by making properties quietly available, as we are already in contact with over 200,000 buyers and tenants looking for a London home.

How can landlords maximise the appeal of their property?

At Dexters we work in partnership with over 48,000 landlords across London by taking our fee monthly and not upfront. We continue to advise them to make sure their property stands out. In Mayfair, for example, tenants are looking for a certain level of luxury, so we offer a bespoke design and refurbishment service. From staging your home to a complete renovation, we can offer advice on how to make the most of your property.

Tell us about the partnership with Wetherell…

What is your favourite area in prime central London and why?

It has to be the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, it’s where I started my career more than two decades ago! Notting Hill is one of my favourites, wandering up Portobello Market on a Saturday morning. The communal garden squares are at the top of everyone's wish list and the coloured houses are iconic.

The power of regeneration

With the revival of Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms, a wealth of new homes offering an enviable lifestyle are in extremely high demand

For decades the iconic structure of Battersea Power Station on the banks of the River Thames dominated the London skyline. At its peak, it produced a fifth of London’s power, supplying electricity to the capital’s most recognisable landmarks, including the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace.

When the station closed in the eighties, the structure and surrounding Nine Elms district was neglected. It wasn’t until 2013 that regeneration began and it was three more years before the power station itself was secured for redevelopment.

Now the area is unrecognisable. Always a landmark, Battersea Power Station has become a modern-day leisure destination and is also now home to many Londoners who are snapping up apartments and sky villas in developments such as Koa at Electric Boulevard, The Power Station, Battersea Roof Gardens, Prospect Place and Circus West Village.

Riverside living

Gabriel Cunningham, Director of Dexters New Homes says, “The Battersea Power Station redevelopment is the epicentre of the area. It ticks every box in terms of bars, restaurants, shopping, children’s activities and social events. We find that buyers and tenants want to live in and around the Power Station and in any development that is within walking distance or reachable by bike.”

People who are keen to secure a property with a river view are willing to pay a premium

The new Northern line extension which added two new underground stations, Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms, attracts commuters. Gabriel adds, “We are seeing that buyers who perhaps rented in Pimlico buy in Nine Elms, because it's a great option for those moving south of the

river who still want to be close to the city with all the amenities on their doorstep.”

Dominic Reeves, Director of Dexters Kennington, finds that proximity to the river is a draw. He explains, “Homes in these areas have been sold and let to both UK and overseas buyers and tenants looking to have a piece of London close to the Thames. Riverside living is hugely attractive but given that most of these apartment blocks are high rise, residents can also enjoy the far-reaching views of the West End, the City and Canary Wharf.”

Luxe life

The new American Embassy which relocated from Grosvenor Square to Nine Elms in 2018 has added an international dimension to the vicinity; and nearby Embassy Gardens, built by Ballymore, is a sensational example of apartment living. Residents and guests can enjoy a luxurious indoor and outdoor spa, two state-of-the-art gyms, an indoor pool and the world-class Sky Pool which, suspended between two apartment blocks, appears to defy gravity.

Gabriel says, “River Park Tower is another stand out building by the Chinese developer who also designed Thames City. Dexters has had tremendous success in Thames City, we've achieved fantastic prices and had affluent international families move in. For example, a Turkish-American family bought a three bedroom apartment, furnished by Harrods, for their son who is studying at university.”

Sky high

Gabriel continues, “Similarly we’ve had a lot of buyers for The Tower at St George Wharf which was built by Berkeley Group. The development is on the corner of Nine Elms and receives strong interest.” The Tower is one of the tallest residential towers in Europe and has magnificent views across the capital.

Dexters work in partnership with riverside specialists Waterview and local expert Soren Ravaux, Director of Waterview, knows the importance of a wonderful vista. He says, “There are an array of developments up and down the

Nine Elms collection

Thames offering connection with the river. We’re seeing that in a world where many are far more tuned into their health, more and more people are looking to live in close proximity to the Thames. People say they feel that they are on holiday when they’re near the water.”

Room with a view

Gabriel adds, “People who are keen to secure a property with a river view are willing to pay a premium between 10 and

20 per cent. Others are content with skyline views of Big Ben and the London Eye. That said, the proximity to the river is incredibly important for many buyers and tenants. The Thames Path is brilliant for those who like to keep active, it's part of the lifestyle around Battersea Park and Nine Elms.”
