LUMINAIRE DESIGN 2020

The brief for this project was to design and build a working luminaire (hanging or standing). The concept of a jellyfish and its use of bioluminescence was used in order to design a luminaire that would light up the space it is in in a such a way as to create a unique sense of ambiance, in the same way that a swarm of jellysish would in order to communicate in the deep ocean. The final solution emphasises this phenomenon and the effect it has on a space.

The brief for this project was to look at and understand the elements of Farnsworth House by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The aim was to keep the original style of modernism alive throughout the space, adding a second wing and making sure that the architecture of the building works well with the new site in order to be as sustainable aspossible, through the use of elements such as passive ventilation, natural lighting, building orientation, space plannin etc.

The brief for this project was to design a “healthy” workplace for the employees of booking.com.

Since this office space would not be visited by clients, the aim was to design a comfortable space that worked for the employees of booking.com and provided them with a variety of workspace options depending on their preferences and needs, all based on the concept of an activity-based workspace. Biophilic design elements and principles was also intriduced in order to create a workspace that feels differnt to any other and promotes overall mental and physical well-being.

The aim of this project was to design a seperate pavilion-like structure infront of the existing c o f f e e s h o p b u i l d i n g a t t h e C o m p a n y ’s G a r d e n i n C a p e To w n . H e r i t a g e h a d t o b e t a k e n i n t o c o n s i d eration when designing the structure, resulting in the final design solution not taking away from t h e e x i s t i n g b u i l d i n g ’s f a c a d e o r i d e n t i t y. T h e c o n c e p t o f r e f l e c t i o n w a s u s e d a s t h e b a s e a n d r e fers to the structure being used as a sort of teaching medium to reflect back onto the history and identity of the garden and teach vistors about the origin of the garden and its importance to the c i t y o f C a p e To w n .

The brief of this project was to design an all-inclusive, wheelchair-friendly home while creating a s p a c e t h a t w i l l a l l o w t h e u s e r t o g o a b o u t t h e i r l i f e w i t h o u t f e e l i n g h i n d e r e d i n a n y w a y, a s w e l l a s i m p r o v e t h e u s e r ’s o v e ra l l m e n t a l a n d p h y s i c a l w e l l - b e i n g . T h e fo c u s i s o n w e l l n e s s i n i n t e r i o r design and designing a space that feels normal, yet functions as a fully wheelchair-friendly space all while using the courtyard to bring life to the interior of the home through constant interaction from anywhere within the house.

TWO STREAMS 2021

The brief of this project was simple as it was for a family project on Two Streams farm in Paarl.

The aim was to extend the existing building and add a new downstairs “braai room” that was to fit in with the existing design of the house. Exposed brick walls and stairs extend existing elements i n t o t h e n e w s p a c e , w h i l e t h e f l o o r, w a l l s a n d c e i l i n g w e r e t o m a t c h t h e e x i s t i n g . T h e s p a c e h a d t o cater for a 10-seater dining table, the existing braai that is to be moved doen to its proposed new position, a bare counter and space for appliances such as bar fridges and ice machines behind the b a r c o u n t e r. E n o u g h u n d e r c o u n t e r s t o r a g e w a s a l s o t o b e i n c l u d e d u n d e r a c e m e n t w o r k t o p s i t u a t ed next to the braai. The space also needed to have access to a number of different views of the farm

T h i s b r i e f w a s a l s o fa i r l y s i m p l e a s i t w a s fo r a fa m i l y p ro j e c t i n Va l d e V i e , Pa a r l . T h e b r i e f w a s t o design a new sunk-in fire pit next to the existing swimming pool. The existing concrete firepit is to be removed, therefore leaving enough space for the new design to be implemented and built. The design had to fit in with the design of the house and cater for a number of spatial requirements.

Enough seating was to be provided, with under-deck storage for firewood and tools. Since there is only one existing outdoor light, the design had to incorperate a range of LED strips incorperated into the seating and staircase in order to make it easier to use and navigated through the space at night (when this space will likely be used more).
