MATERIAL STUDIO

Semester 4

The intent of the project was to design a public library for the user group in and around the Shilaj gam. The site is located opp to Shilaj Lake. The site itself had its own character as it was a contoured site. Further, the primary concern besides designing was to explore different materials and their techniques. it also helped in understanding how materials can be used in different ways, the pros and cons of materials, the impact of it on formal expression and spatial expression.

01 1

The process started with the contextual study of the place and the people to whom the space would cater. These different factors led to the final design. The spaces are visually connected to the outside environment with a beautiful view of the lake and one is also visually directed towards the lake which was enhanced by the use of brick vaults. Vaults with brick jalis and openings help maintain the temperature as well as light while also being cost-effective and locally available. The spaces are divided according to their function and needs, while being transitional they also increase social interaction while also being private.

PLAN SPACE

HOUSING STUDIO

The site is located near Shivranjini Circle, Ahmedabad. The program was to design a mixed-use building that has apartments and commercial spaces. the apartments include a total of 160 units for the middle-income group. the intent was to make a community living, having public spaces, spatial configuration, and Relating the place with the site context which itself relates to the local traditions and living habits of people.

The total of 160 units include both apartments and row houses. The placement of row houses allows a sense of ownership while also being connected to the surrounding spaces. Social interaction plays an important role in a housing project and also does privacy, so the spaces are designed accordingly which enhances interaction while maintaining privacy.

SITE SECTION

PEOPLE AND PLACES

The project was based on The Living Narratives of Shilaj Gam. The Site is located in the Shilaj village, near Shilaj Lake. The intent was to create an Anganwadi for children from 0 - 6 and to also cater to the lactating women residing in and around the site. The primary concerns were to cater to the locals and the children with a space to learn and grow simultaneously.

03 PROCESS 9
Semester 3

The project was meant for the people living nearby so the space is designed to be inviting which is enhanced by the geometry of the plan. The idea was to integrate every function into one without disturbing the natural circulation that exhibited before.

CULTURAL MANIFESTATION

Documentation (Group work)

Cultural manifestation, the word itself defines its meaning. It was a purely documentation-based collaborative. the intent was to document the underrated and hidden culture in the pols of Ahmedabad. There were 3 major temples in the Juni Ahmedavad NI Pol that we documented. The Mahakali Temple, Hathinath Derasar, and Himjamata Temple. This documentation included on-site hand-drawn drawings with atmost precision and detail.

Documenting the Keith house was a great opportunity. the house represented every concern of Baker that he used to practice. the house is divided into levels and thus expresses particular use of the spaces through the divisions. The design is simple yet attractive due to the in-between spaces created by the spaces around. SECTION AA’
