So, too, is the case for organizations, individuals, and families. The belonging leader accepts the responsibility to both create the necessary fractures and to build back an organization or team that embraces the whole of its people.

The Design Is Ours
The future is indeed for us to design. When I think about the tens of thousands of people we interact with each year through our work, I become inspired with what can be for our evolving world through their hopefulness and desire to do and be more. It is obvious where leaders get stuck and where they get motivated to affect lasting change. People want change—they just want it within the defined organizational identity and social contract that they signed up for. It is up to us as leaders to deliver on that promise.

The future has no plans. We are the ones with the plans—and the vision, the dreams, and the wherewithal to create the future. We cannot allow it to happen to us or allow it to be determined for us. We must be actively part of its creation. That is the spirit of what the Belonging Rules are all about. Changing the future, one decision, one act, one person at a time. We can each commit daily to finding our own spaces to turn into the power, to listen without labels, to choose identity over purpose, to challenge everything, and to demand 100% of the truth. It’s your journey. It’s your potential. It is your life, and it’s your decision how it extends beyond you. It’s your decision to invite people into your world and to be invited into someone else’s world. The rules give the power back to you to be the transformational leader, the belonging leader, of your own life and business. How will you think about belonging?
To me, belonging is where we hold space for something of shared importance. It is where we come together on values, purpose, and identity; a space of acceptance where agreement is not required but a shared framework is understood; where there is an invitation into the space; an intentional choice to take part in; something vital to a sense of connection, security, and acceptance. To me, belonging is a way of life and the only way to lead. When you believe in belonging and believe your future is TBD, you begin to create the world you want to live in and lead in. You challenge your own ideas and biases and are open to wildly different possibilities. You create a space for others and yourself, and that is where the alchemy and the magic collide to change tomorrow.
You have the tools. All it takes is conviction and courage—and if you are a leader in these times, you already have it. Allow the Belonging Rules to become your way of leadership and life. After all, it’s all to be designed. By you.
