Mother’s Day Viewed Through a Jewish Lens

M

y earliest memory of Mother’s Day goes back to when I was about 6 years old. I conspired with my sister, who is two years my senior, to surprise my mother by making dinner for the family.

While she Rabbi Chaim Fink was still in bed, early on that Sunday morning, we attempted one of our favorites: spaghetti and meatballs.

It was an absolute disaster! The chopped meat was frozen, as we were yet unaware of the need to defrost it the night before.

Despite the flopped dinner, she truly appreciated the sentiment, and we helped her clean up the not-so-small mess that was left behind.

As one travels along the journey of life, Mother’s Day takes on different meanings. To a young child, it may mean trying to create a nice surprise for the most important woman in the child’s life. Freshly cut foraged wildflowers, a lopsided cake or a cute little note unmistakably written in a child’s scribble are all ways a youngster might mark this special day.

As one gets older, the gifts for mom grow in sophistication. Beautiful roses, breakfast in bed or that new kitchen gadget

that she always wanted. And when parents turn the corner and enter the arena of old age, perhaps picking them up and taking them out for dinner is the way to express love and appreciation.

For many, Mother’s Day is a time of mixed feelings, thinking of a mother who has passed on, nostalgically recalling the many good times that were shared together. But there is also the pain of the loss, missing her and feeling the void.

A DEEP LOVE From a Jewish perspective, Mother’s Day is intrinsically connected to the gratitude we must feel and express to someone who has given us more than anyone in the whole world. The Torah teaches that the love that a parent feels for a child is even stronger than the reverse, that is, the love that the child feels for a parent.

A mother is capable of extending herself and giving

to her child in a way that the child will never be capable of replicating. The nights robbed of sleep, moments filled with worry and days rich in that nurturing maternal love are just the very beginning of what our mothers have done for us.

To truly understand the depth of something, we study the ancient Hebrew word for it. We believe that the world was created with the mystical letters of the Hebrew alphabet, and the Hebrew word for something will portray its essence.

The Hebrew word for mother is “em” or “Ima,” closely related to the Hebrew word “emunah,” which means faith. Through her constant care and love, our mother is the one who instills in us a deep sense of trust. That foundation of trust is the basis for our faith in our Father in Heaven, and a faith and hope in people. Through a mother’s love, we learn to trust in humanity and in the goodness of the world around us.

Honoring one’s mother

(and father) plays such a prominent role in Torah thought that it made it into the Ten Commandments.

It stands as number five on the list and serves to bridge the gap between the commandments that relate to our relationship with the Almighty, which occupy the right side of the Tablets, and the interactions that we have with our peers, found on the left side.

A parent is a partner with God in creating us and giving us life. To us, a parent isn’t a peer. A mother and father are not simply a friend, but they are someone we look up to, revere and respect.

Properly honoring a parent is a step toward honoring the Almighty, and as such, this mitzvah serves perfectly to transition from the right side of the tablets — the Divine side, to the left side — the one dealing with laws of human engagement.

To those of us who are fortunate enough to have a mother still in this world, let us take this Mother’s Day, and really, every day, to appreciate the great gift that we have.

She won’t be with us forever, so let us seize the moment and make it special.

To those of us whose mother lives on in memory, let us cherish those memories.

Fond Memories of ‘The Heights’ “Living Jewishly in the Heights,” the recent Jewish News article on the surge of Jewish residents in Madison Heights [April 15, page 12], recalls earlier experiences of the first Jewish students at Madison High School from 1952-54. Oak Park was a newly developed community and had just one elementary school. Families with older students had to enroll them in school districts that would accept tuition students. This was still after the war and home construction in new suburbs like Oak Park was at warp speed! (“Warp speed” was probably not part of the patois of this time.)

My parents, Fred and Dorothy Nolish, were among those first Oak Park “settlers.”

I, as a newly double promoted 10th grader, found myself on a school bus en route to Madison High School, following my freshman year at Central, where geometry had terrified me, and my tone deafness had disqualified me from singing in the chorus.

Understand that a Jewish student was a curiosity in this blue collar, working class community. There was a “Jew store” across from the school, and it was a given that you could be “jewed” out of money. And while I was a decent student at Central High School, I became a star at Madison. My classmates were friendly and welcoming.

The teachers seemed delighted to find such an industrious student, and I was able to start a school newspaper and become its editor, serve

as a class officer, participate in forensics, have the leading role in the school play, serve in the homecoming court and graduate as valedictorian.

Let me note, however, that there was a total of 37 students in my graduating class and few were college-bound.

I doubt that I would have had this honor at Central, which was awash with brilliant, ambitious scholars!

I had also found a boyfriend among my Madison classmates, even though I recall hurt feelings when a boy of interest referred to me as “a walking dictionary,” but I found a steady who escorted me to school dances and the prom. My parents, concerned that I might not marry a Jewish boy, had joined Temple Beth El when

I was in the fifth grade. Thus, for my last two years of high school, I lived in two worlds: my Madison High School classmates were very different from the Beth El crowd, many of whom were from the city’s most prominent families.

Thus, to read that Jews are “living Jewishly in the Heights” evokes memories of a community that enriched my life. I’m not surprised that this influx is impacting the city’s government and culture and that newcomers are experiencing friendship and support. It’s even more gratifying to learn that the city council approved a proclamation recognizing International Holocaust Remembrance Day!

A Conversation About Justice Between Friends

Dear Ken, I must confess I had misgivings about that verdict. I knew what I had seen. I knew what I felt was so obvious. And yet, American history had conditioned me to be cautious about Rabbi Daniel my optimism.

Syme I listened to Judge Cahill read the verdict: “Guilty! Guilty!

Guilty!” And I felt enormous relief. But at the same time, I felt profound sadness, sadness that a verdict that seemed so obvious could be a source of celebration in the United States of America.

My thoughts drifted back to August 1963. I was 17 years old when my father of blessed memory, Rabbi M. Robert Syme, returned from participating in the March on Washington with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and told me, “Danny, America is on the road to justice, but it is your generation that will bring us there.”

Dad was a bit too optimistic.

But it was a 17-year-old girl, Darnella Frazier, who turned on the video on her cell phone and filmed the entire horrific murder because, as she said, “it

Darnella did something, and the entire world saw.

This young woman, perhaps unknowingly, was living out the words of Torah: “Justice, Justice shall you pursue” (Deuteronomy 16:20).

So here we are today, filled with hope tempered by a profound sense of uncertainty.

For during the Chauvin trial itself, another young black man, 20-year-old Daunte Wright, was shot and killed by the police, only 10 miles from where George Floyd died. A 16-year-old Black girl was killed by police in Columbus, Ohio, during jury deliberations. And Andrew Brown Jr. was killed by police in North Carolina the day after the verdict.

The verdict was a historic first step, but only a beginning.

There is so much more to do.

So today, I again reach out my hand to you, my beloved friend, and promise you that I will do all in my power to strengthen your resolve.

There is no way for me to understand fully the challenges we face. So, I will depend on you to guide me and to reinforce my understanding.

God bless you and may this be God’s will.

Dear Danny, I wholeheartedly appreciate your comments on the Derek Chauvin guilty verdicts.

My heart rejoiced when Judge Cahill read those guilty verdicts … unlike in Rev. Kenneth 1992 when four Flowers white police officers were acquitted in the videotaped beating of Rodney King. I lived in Los Angeles at the time and watched the city go up in flames in the worst civil unrest in the history of Los Angeles. So, the Derek Chauvin guilty verdicts gave me a sense of justice.

However, this cannot be the conclusion of the matter.

There are still three other former Minneapolis police officers who must be held accountable in the George Floyd murder. Other police officers must be charged and held accountable for the murders of Breanna Taylor, Daunte Wright and now Andrew Brown Jr. in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Time and time again, too many African Americans are dying at the hands of white police officers, and, in most

instances, they are unarmed!

Something must be done now to change the climate and correct these gross miscarriages of justice!

Therefore, we must lobby Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which, if passed, will hold police officers accountable for their criminal actions against African Americans in particular and all people in general.

We must change the mindset of white police officers in particular and all police officers in general that African Americans and Latinos deserve the same courtesy and respect as their white counterparts. If we believe that all police officers are not bad, then we must also believe that all African Americans and Latinos are not bad! We must promote community policing in which police officers know the residents and are not so trigger-happy to shoot first and ask questions later.

Let us forge ahead together and bring about justice in our community. Let us get to know one another better … police and community … and establish a bond of respect and understanding and friendship. Let us work together hand in hand until “Justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream” (Amos 5:24).

We shall overcome!

My STORY Leslie Woodell Kaner has a long history with Hebrew Free Loan that goes back to her Dental School days. She’d had government loans and help from her parents, but that wasn’t enough to cover all the costs.

Life: Jlife platform will transform Jewish community connections.

E

very week, dozens of local Jewish congregations and organizations present a wide array of classes, lectures, religious and holiday observances, children’s activities, fundraisers and social events.

Most are online due to the pandemic, but opportunities for Jewish connection and enrichment abound.

However, it’s not always easy to discover what is available and find out how to participate.

Jlife — a new initiative from Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit — will make it much simpler to connect and “do Jewish.”

Scott Kaufman, former CEO of the Detroit Federation, said that the need for a better way to connect occurred to him a few years ago when several acquaintances saw photos of a prior Federation event on social media. They told him they wished they had known about it in advance so they could have attended.

Kaufman began to think about a way to offset this Scott “disconnect.”

Kaufman He started research into a new potential Jewish community connector by inviting 40 Detroit Jewish organizations to meet and discuss their common problems and potential solutions. Thirty-nine attended and many identified the same needs for reaching their audiences and providing successful programming.

The favorable participation rate and their many common needs convinced him that there was a basis to build a joint technology platform. (A technology platform is a computer/software connection point designed for specific uses — i.e. EventBrite is a platform for event information and registration.) After consulting with technology experts, Kaufman and others decided that building a custom platform — to be named Jlife — would work better even though it would take longer and cost more.

JOINT EFFORT Creating the Jlife platform became a joint effort between the Detroit Federation and its Montreal counterpart, Federation CJA. In this effort, a group of Federation staff members, contractors and volunteers from Detroit, Montreal, Los Angeles, and Israel have been working on Jlife development for several years. Leadership includes Kaufman, Ted Cohen, Federation’s

Detroit native who lives in Los Angeles, Weisman was invited to a Jlife brainstorming session when he was home for a visit.

A technology expert and veteran of several startup companies, he is the “interface between development of the technology and Federation, leading a team of technology developers and designers working on the Jlife web app and website.”

Full-time Jlife staff members include Julie Yaker, Jlife chief happiness officer, and Zach Weisman, head of product for Jlife.

Yaker interacts directly with Jewish organizations in Detroit and Montreal that want to use the platform to reach the Jewish community and is managing Jlife’s introduction and ongoing use. She describes Jlife as a platform to widen audiences and connections that will “help Jewish people do more Jewish things.”

Weisman has been working on Jlife since its inception. A

SINGLE ACCESS POINT With Jlife, Weisman says, “There will be one place to find all the amazing events and programs in our Jewish communities.” Jlife will be accessible at Jlife.app through desktop computers, IPad, tablets, smart phones and other electronic devices.

“We want people to do more Jewish more often,” Kaufman says.

Jlife has tested its technology for several events during the past few months. One of the first Jlife curated components — a family programs page — will launch in May. This page (not to be confused with the JCC’s JFamily program) will offer a compilation of Jewish activities and programs for children, teens and families.

For a parent looking for a Jewish-themed activity for a child, Jlife will save time and effort previously spent searching multiple web and social media sites to find an appropriate event.

Everything is presented in an organized, easy-to-access manner.

Mikki Frank, director of the JCC’s JFamily program, says, “We use Jlife as a registration platform for our various programs. This includes our PJ Library play dates, our Jbaby prenatal program and our JFamily parent education and music programs. We find it to be seamless and very user-friendly. Parents are busy and Jlife helps provide a one-stop shop for all Jewish family programming.”

Frank adds that they are seeing increased attendance for activities. “As more groups use Jlife, I anticipate this growing even more.”

Cohen, Federation’s chief marketing officer, says that “Our goal is to engage more Jewish people. Jlife is a technology that will support and amplify events and programs.”

The Montreal Connection

The Jlife partnership between the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and Montreal’s Federation CJA evolved from a visit that Scott Kaufman made to the Montreal federation several years ago. He was there for a presentation about organizational and leadership transitions and mentioned Jlife in his remarks.

A Montreal federation staff member was impressed with the Jlife concept and asked him to meet with a local Jewish donor — Sylvain Abitbol, a former co-president of the Canadian Jewish Congress and former chair of the Montreal

federation, who is a telecommunications entrepreneur.

Abitbol was very interested in Jlife and Joel Segal, Montreal federation’s first vice president, suggested that the two federations pool their resources — beginning a very fruitful collaboration. Initial funding is being provided by major foundations from North America, including the Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation and the William Davidson Foundation, with additional donors in both the Detroit and Montreal areas.

One program that was presented to local teens by several Detroit-area Jewish organizations was also offered to the Montreal Jewish community at their request.

The synagogues’ joint Purim programming illustrates key benefits of Jlife — the ability to Julie Yaker collaborate — making more effective use of staff and other resources both to develop events but also to market them and efficiently register participants. Yaker reports that three Purim events were held and that 50% of participants registered

for more than one event.

Kaufman hopes that Jlife will help Jewish organizations save time, pool resources and enhance targeted marketing. “It’s all about community-building. The magic will be if it is an accelerator to engaging more Jews,” he says.

Right now, he describes Jlife as “a car that is being built and every week or so we add a feature. COVID accelerated the need.”

The development team tests each feature and incorporates feedback from participating community organizations. When fully operational, Jlife subscribers will be able to complete a profile to indicate their interests and receive a weekly personal update about programming likely to appeal to them. Each

For those concerned about data security, Weisman provides the reassurance, “We take data and privacy very seriously. We can be sure that it’s not sold or shared.”

Kaufman points out that Jlife’s development team includes Israeli partners with cyber security expertise. Participating organizations will be able to receive anonymized data to help them plan their programming.

ELIGIBILITY FOR JLIFE Local nonprofit Jewish organizations and congregations are eligible to include their events on the Jlife

platform at no charge. Interested groups should contact Julie Yaker by email — Julie@Jlife.app. A marketing campaign, including Federation and JCC contacts, as well as targeted social media ads, will introduce Jlife to the local Jewish community. Through Jlife, individuals will be able to find events and programs by age group, interest or sponsoring organization.

Participation will be free for participating organizations and individuals.

By helping individuals easily connect with Jewish organizations and activities, Kaufman believes that Jlife could be transformative for Jewish identity. This fall, Jlife organizers plan to expand the platform nationally.

Justice Bernstein advances Abraham Accords while advocating for the disabled.

M

ichigan Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein is now in Israel after a nearly threemonth stay in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, doing disability advocacy work in relation to the Abraham Accords.

Bernstein has also been at the center of slight controversy after backlash to him spending the last three months out of the country, with some Lansing Republicans questioning whether he has abandoned his Michigan domicile. Bernstein refutes the point to the JN with his side of the story and details the work he’s been doing.

“I was in Dubai, and I was set to go there for about two weeks, and that was the plan.” Bernstein said. “The goal in going to Dubai was to help be a part of the Abraham Accords. We were focusing on how when you have a relationship with Israel, it benefits everybody.”

The area Bernstein was focusing on is people with disabilities.

Bernstein has been blind since birth.

“The plan was to really focus on the idea of how people with disabilities can bring people together,” Bernstein said. “When

you have people that struggle and face challenges, it allows for greater connections, and that was my role.”

Bernstein said the essence of the effort was to allow for deeper learning about people with disabilities in a way they hadn’t learned before.

“A lot of people in the royal families and in influential positions in the Arab world have children that have special needs,” Bernstein explained. “But in that part of the world, you don’t really talk about it, it’s not really discussed. If your child has a disability, ultimately it’s something that’s seen as taboo.”

Bernstein said this outreach allowed them to see new possibilities, and those possibilities were brought to them through the Accords.

NEW PERSPECTIVES “When you would meet with people in the royal family, they would say it allowed them to see their child in a totally different light and see possibilities for their child in a way they never envisioned,” Bernstein said.

“Then, they would ask how they could make a difference because they don’t have programs and

services like we do.”

Bernstein stressed what was so special about this endeavor is that it was, “the first time a Jewish person has ever been featured in a favorable, positive light by all Arab media.”

“The narrative was changing, and I was asked to be the person to allow for folks to have an opportunity to basically be introduced to a Jewish person,” Bernstein said. “It was thought that a person with a severe disability who’s faced struggles and challenges would be a good conduit to have a new appreciation of Jewish people.”

Originally planned to be a two-week trip, Bernstein says it was then recognized the effort was going very well.

“Things were going better

than what had been anticipated, so I was asked whether I was willing to stay on and continue doing the work we were doing from the UAE.” Bernstein noted a unique window had been opened, and if he didn’t take advantage of it then, it wouldn’t be known when that window would open again.

“I was doing what I thought was helpful for Israel, something that I thought was for a higher purpose,” Bernstein said.

“Certain people who have personal connections to disabilities were very touched, and they wanted this message out.”

Bernstein says the closed Israeli borders played a role in terms of that situation, but the reason he stayed in Dubai for that long wasn’t only because things were going well.

In regard to blowback he’s received from some in Michigan, Bernstein respects that viewpoint, but says he would be doing the same thing in Michigan as he has been overseas.

ing, so everyone’s working from home. I felt that since the building was closed and, since I had ample time to get all of my work done and I’m working by telephone anyway, I looked at it and said, ‘what’s the difference?’

“If I’m doing it from my apartment in Birmingham or if I’m in the UAE, it’s the same phone, and all I’m doing is talking on the phone. If you’re asked to stay because what you’re doing has meaning, I just thought what would be the reason to come home if I’m just going to sit in my living room?”

Bernstein says the idea he had no plans to leave Dubai was not at all correct.

“I was there for a specific mission to do specific work, and then as soon as that work was completed, I moved on to Israel.”

AIDING THE DISABLED Now in Israel, Bernstein says

the plan is to do the same thing as in the UAE, getting people excited about the relationship with the Emiratis, with disability work as the conduit to that happening.

Once that happens, the plan is for an official delegation from Access Israel, a non-governmental nonprofit helping people with disabilities better integrate into society, to return to the UAE and start implementation of new programs and services for those with disabilities in the Arab world.

Bernstein doesn’t know if he’s going back with them but is happy to help sign the official memorandum between Access Israel and the UAE if asked to do so.

Bernstein also said he may travel to Uzbekistan and other countries as part of the mission to promote further opportunities.

“Everyone that’s connected with the work we’re doing understands that the absolute second we do anything in per-

Bernstein is also up for reelection next year and plans to go full force with the “same energy and enthusiasm” as his efforts in the Middle East.

Detroit Mourns Mount Meron Tragedy

T

he Detroit Jewish community gathered over Zoom Sunday night to mourn the loss of 45 lives at Mount Meron on Lag b’Omer, April 29. At least 150 were injured in the tragedy.

Representatives of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and clergy from many streams of Judaism remembered the victims and shared their collective grief with the people of Israel through prayer and community.

Steven Ingber, COO of Federation, opened the memorial. “While no one can make sense of this tragedy,” he said, “tonight as a family, we remember the victims and share our collective grief with the people of Israel, Kol Yisrael. In good times and in bad we are here for one another.”

Rabbi Daniel Schwartz of Temple Shir Shalom, head of the Michigan Board of Rabbis, said, “Today, Detroit stands as one community to join with our family and friends on this Israeli national day of mourning. To mourn the loss of 45 lives, to pray for a speedy and full recovery for those injured and to thank the countless professionals and volunteers who rushed to the scene at Mount Meron to help.”

Six Americans were among the dead, including Nachman Doniel “Donny” Morris of New Jersey, the 19-year-old nephew of Rabbi Yechiel Morris of Young Israel of Southfield.

JTA reports that Donny had flown to Israel in September to study at Yeshivat Shaalvim in central Israel, after the Israeli government made special provisions to allow yeshivah students to come despite travel restrictions due to the pandemic.

“The Morris family are pillars of the Bergenfield-Teaneck community,” said a neighbor in the New Jersey community. “I have known [Donny] since he was 6. He was a rising star as a student in the Jewish world.

He was a sweet boy.”

Rabbi Yechiel Morris spoke at the Detroit memorial. “This evening I join you, not as a rabbi, but as someone who is in mourning,”

he said. “I’ve never experienced such profound pain in my life. But at the same time, such profound warmth and love from this Detroit community.”

Rabbi Morris said one of the first emails he received was from Steven Ingber from Federation, expressing solidarity and support in any way they could be helpful. His phone has been constantly ringing with messages and calls from people all across the community, some from people he didn’t even know.

“One thing I’ve learned these past three days is how incredible our Jewish community is,” Rabbi Morris said. “That we take care of one another. We support each other. It’s been extremely comforting for myself and my brother and my sister-in-law and for my parents and our extended family.”

Rabbi Morris said just the hour prior to the Detroit memorial his nephew was buried on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, and he was watching the funeral online along with 50,000 people from around the world. There were 25,000 people attending in person.

Rabbi Morris explained why his nephew went to Mount Meron. “He went because my nephew and so many of the other 100,000plus people were there searching for spiritual meaning. My nephew loved to pray. He loved to study Torah. He loved to engage in acts of kindness. When someone else in the class was a little different, he was the one who

would befriend them.

“But there is one thing that I can leave you with,” Rabbi Morris said. “Maybe to try to emulate my nephew Donny.

“Any way that you can, connect to people through acts of kindness. To study a little Torah a few minutes every day. To go to temple, to go to synagogue, to pray in person, virtually, that’s what my nephew lived for and what the other 100,000 people who were there were trying to experience as well.”

Mount Meron is home to the grave of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a disciple of Rabbi Akiva. He authored the Zohar, the foundational work of Jewish mystical thought known as Kabbalah. With more than 100,000 people having traveled to the town, it was the largest gathering in Israel since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The crushing of the crowd after the event appears to be the worst civil disaster in Israel’s history.

Two Israelis spoke at the Detroit memorial: Yiftah Leket, Detroit’s emissary from Israel, and Ariella Rada of Chicago, representing the consul general of Israel to the Midwest.

“I want everybody to watch and support us knowing that in addition to these eight people, we’re also going to talk about life at JSL and how older adults are so strong and have come through the pandemic with such strength,” Rosen said. “We’re proud of our residents and we appreciate the community’s support so deeply.”

Many honorees are return brunch guests, but it’s not too late for those new to the event to join the 93 individuals who are 95 or older, who have responded so far this year. Of that number, 65 are JSL residents and, amazingly, 15 are 100 or older, including Milton Zussman of Longboat Key, Fla. “My father-in-law is a new member of the centenarian club with his 100th birthday in October,” said brunch co-chair Julie Zussman of Huntington Woods, who has enjoyed the event with four generations of her family. “It has been such fun attending with him, Rick — his son who is my husband — along with a few grandchildren and great-grands.

“It is so much fun to see honorees reconnecting each year, and we look forward to witnessing this again.”

For now, the hope is that seeing familiar faces on the video and knowing other honorees and guests are viewing it at the same time, sharing the same meal and enjoying the same gifts will create a fun memory.

Although planning was altered and the venue certainly changed, the sentiment and objective of the event remain.

“This year our goal was to ensure everyone felt like they were celebrating the Oldest Jewish Americans Brunch together, with the same feel as in years past,” Katz said.

“Our virtual program provides the honorees with the music, program and classic brunch they’ve come to love.

We’re honored to recognize the Greatest Generation in this way.”

A Community Ally Temple Emanu-El looks to the future while holding on to traditions of the past.

n the midst of many positive changes and new initiatives underway, Temple Emanu-El aims to stay true to its overarching goal: to try and “repair the world through the Jewish lens.”

“The temple has always seen itself as engaged with the world around it,” explains Rabbi Matthew Zerwekh. “The times we’re in dictate action. Our congregation is welcoming the opportunity to engage.”

They’ve implemented racial justice training for members, completed new renovations in their sanctuary and are home to the Jewish Gay Network, which supports Metro Detroit’s LGBTQ+ community.

Yet these initiatives are only the beginning of a myriad of programs being developed and rolled out by the temple.

“I’m a leader who is showing people ways how they can do that,” Zerwekh says of repairing the world through the Jewish lens.

“There’s so much going on right now that we feel like we can’t affect or have any real control over, except for our own personal action.”

Temple Emanu-El is starting by joining important conversations on race. They’re partnering with Detroit Jews for Justice to help spark and inspire understanding of racial biases that divide the world, particularly within the area. By working alongside leadership at Detroit’s Bethel Community Transformation Center, among others, the

temple is part of a larger effort to build relationships between synagogues and Black churches.

“In a world right now that feels like we’re seeing a lot of hate speech, antisemitism and racism being brought to the forefront, it’s important that we understand what allyship can do in terms of strengthening our entire community,” Zerwekh explains. “Not just the Jewish community, but the Jewish and the Black community. It can help us interact with that problematic speech and become more unified.”

USING HIS VOICE Zerwekh says that’s one approach of his work as a rabbi and congregation leader, to address what the community is “ready for and calling.” The other, he says, is to use his voice in places where he finds himself “unable to use it.” This takes form by participating in a variety of local marches and peaceful protests, including to advocate for George Floyd and the NAACP. “To be able to use my voice in the way I could and to be able to pray in that way has been very meaningful to me,” Zerwekh

explains. “It’s meaningful to my rabbinate and to my community.”

The temple’s action and engagement in addressing social, political and cultural issues reflects in its membership growth, which has seen a 20% increase in two years.

Previously unaffiliated families are now joining, which Zerwekh believes also stems from having a strong religious school shared with Beth Shalom. “This again speaks to that string through allies,” he says. “The congregations realized they were stronger together in educating the kids.”

Zerwekh says that because the congregation was the first of its kind developed outside of the city limits of Detroit, and the last remaining one in its vicinity, this has helped Temple Emanu-El establish itself as a key Reform presence in southeastern Oakland County. “It’s so powerful,” he says of that presence. “We’re setting ourselves up to be a center for the community to support various ongoing Jewish efforts.”

One of Temple Emanu-El’s biggest endeavors is serving as the home for the Jewish Gay Network. “The leaders of the network were looking for a new home,” he says. When they approached the temple, Zerwekh said the decision was easy to make since JGN aligned well with the congregation’s overall mission of helping people connect with their Judaism.

“We are an open, inclusive community,” Zerwekh describes. “Being able to provide that place for JGN to land was something I feel very fortunate that we were able to do.”

JGN co-chair Faith Robinson Renner agrees with the sentiment. “Temple EmanuEl has always opened itself for many types

of worshippers and inter-religious families,” she explains.

“Rabbi Zerwekh is also very committed to inclusion and social action.”

UPDATED SANCTUARY In addition to housing JGN, Temple Emanu-El is also focusing on revamping its own home by remodeling its sanctuary. “We

brought our sanctuary more in line with how we pray,” Zerwekh says.

The first step was to replace some of the fixed pews with movable seating, which allows for a bigger variety of prayer arrangements. Though the temple has been closed due to COVID-19, Zerwekh says that members who tune in for broad-

embers of Ann Arbor’s Beth Israel Congregation were in court this week arguing for more enforcement to prevent the weekly anti-Israel protests that have greeted worshipers arriving for Shabbat services at the Conservative synagogue since September 2003.

Appearing before a threejudge panel of the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati on April 27, members of the synagogue sought to re-establish claims against the city of Ann Arbor and the group of protesters who have demonstrated near its entrance every Saturday morning for nearly two decades.

The protesters have held signs with messages including “Jewish Power Corrupts” and “Resist Jewish Power.”

lawsuit was filed by Marvin Gerber, a Beth Israel member.

Dr. Miriam Brysk, a Holocaust survivor and member of Pardes Hannah Congregation, which is located in an annex next to Beth Israel, is a part of the lawsuit as a co-plaintiff.

The suit argued that the protesters violated several federal statutes which make it unlawful for private citizens to engage in conduct, including speech, which targets particular individuals based on their race or ethnicity. The suit separately alleged that the city of Ann Arbor aided and abetted the protesters by failing to enforce the prohibitions in its sign ordinance.

They have now appealed the decision of U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts in August 2020 to dismiss calls for the protests to be curbed. Roberts dismissed

The temple wants to make itself a presence for anyone interested in positively influencing the world. “We’re making it clear that we are there to support Jewish learning and engagement,” Zerwekh explains.

“We’re occupying a space to give people a chance to engage with Judaism in an unaffiliated way, but we’re also a presence for when they find the need for a congregation family.”

“Members of the temple created them for our Torahs,” Zerwekh explains. Now, the ark has frosted glass doors with some of the artwork that was on the old doors etched into the new, a bridge between past and present.

“You can see the beautiful history that’s in the ark,” Zerwekh continues. “It helps to bring a little bit of additional light into the space.”

“Indeed, the First Amendment more than protects the expressions by defendants of what plaintiffs describe as ‘anti-Israeli, anti-Zionist, and antisemitic,’” Roberts wrote in her opinion. “Peaceful protest such as this — on sidewalks and streets — is entitled to the highest level of constitutional protection, even if it disturbs, is offensive and causes emotional distress.”

In their appeal to the Sixth Circuit, Gerber and Brysk argued Roberts misinterpret-

ed the scope of the relief they requested, which they claim involved only “the imposition of reasonable time, place and manner conditions” on the protests.

They accused the district court of ignoring several synagogue members who attested to the emotional distress caused by the protesters’ signs and said the distress constitutes an “intangible injury” that grants them standing.

Marc Susselman, the plaintiff ’s lead counsel, and Ziporah Reich, co-counsel to the plaintiffs, hope the appeal process signifies them making headway.

“We got a chance to flesh out our arguments more,” Susselman said.

At this point, the counsel believes the key to making further headway is whether the appeal panel gives the thumbs up on there being standing for emotional distress as a concrete injury and the imposition of reasonable time, place and manner conditions for the protests.

No timetable has yet been set for the court’s final decision.

Dana Nessel, Michigan’s attorney general since 2019, will receive JBAM’s inaugural Ruth Bader Ginsburg Champion of Justice Award.

At the same event, United States District Judge Avern Cohn, who retired in December 2019 after four decades on the bench, will receive JBAM’s first Lifetime Achievement Award.

AVERN COHN Judge Cohn served on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan from 1979-2019. When he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter, he was the only Jewish judge on that court.

“I grew up at a time when a Jewish federal judge was an important symbol to the total Jewish community,” Cohn said in a 2004 interview with journalist Charlotte Dubin for the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives.

Cohn was a 1949 graduate of University of Michigan Law School. His 30-year law career leading up to the judgeship included working in the firm of his father, famed attorney Irwin Cohn, which later

merged into Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn in Detroit. He also served as chair of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission and on the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners, where he advocated for affirmative action to increase the number of Black and female police officers.

His many volunteer roles in the Jewish community included serving as president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, 1981-1983. He has also been a supporter of Jewish education, including Orthodox day schools. Like his father, Avern Cohn was awarded Federation’s Fred M. Butzel Award for distinguished community service, the honor of which he is most proud.

ADL Tracks Rise in Hate Antisemitic incidents have tripled in state since 2016.

he 2020 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents issued April 27 by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) shows cases of antisemitism in the state of Michigan rose by 21% in 2020, which continues a concerning trend of upward increases. Five years ago, ADL documented only 15 incidents in its annual audit; this year’s spike represents an increase of 240% since 2016, with 51 incidents total. The 51 incidents place Michigan at eighth-most in the country.

Michigan Regional Director Carolyn Normandin said the rise in antisemitism in Michigan is discouraging.

“This is the second year in a row that antisemitism was the highest ever recorded,” Normandin said. “Any incident of antisemitism is not OK, but when you see year-over-year double-digit increases, it’s very worrisome.

For the longest time I’ve been concerned about people being comfortable with antisemitism, and that’s what we see here.”

ADL’s Audit classifies all incidents into three

categories: assault, harassment and vandalism.

Of the total incidents reported in 2020, there were 44 harassment incidents and seven vandalism incidents.

There were no antisemitic assaults reported to the Michigan office in 2020, however.

Of the 51 incidents, 23 took place at Jewish institutions, 11 in public areas, five at business establishments, two at homes/housing, two at college/university campuses, one at a K-12 non-Jewish school and seven in the “other” category.

Antisemitic incidents remained at historically high levels across the United States in 2020, with a total of 2,024 national cases of assault, harassment or vandalism reported to ADL. National antisemitic incidents declined by 4% in 2020 (after hitting an all-time high in 2019), but it was the third-highest year for incidents against American Jews since ADL started tracking the data in 1979.

of Michigan, with the ADL receiving more than 170 reports of hateful incidents during 2020, an increase of more than 40% from the previous year.

Last year was dramatically impacted by the COVID19 pandemic, which led in some cases to Jews and other marginalized communities, especially Asian Americans, being blamed or scapegoated for spreading the virus.

This led to an increase in incidents of antisemitic “Zoom-bombing” — the intentional disruption of live videoconferences. In 2020, ADL recorded 12 incidents of antisemitic

videoconferencing attacks in Michigan.

Normandin says it’s important for people to report these incidents because the data helps them know what they’re dealing with. Normandin also says calling the hate out, holding online platforms accountable to police themselves and create guidelines, and for people to know who they’re voting for are all crucial steps to help curb the hate.

“Use your voice in your community and make sure the ideologies of people in leadership roles in your community are not hateful,” Normandin said.

Watch Your Words!

W

ords create people, and words create societies. Delving into the latest science around speech and neuroscience, communication professor Mark Waldman, one of the world’s leading experts on communication, and Dr Andrew Newberg, a research director at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, explore the idea of “compassionate Rabbi communication” in their Warren book Words Can Change Goldstein Your Brain. They describe how, from childhood, humans’ brains are molded by the words they hear, and that teaching children to use positive words helps them with emotional control and can even increase their attention spans.

The Torah places an enormous emphasis on the ethics of proper speech, with many detailed laws and categories. Speech, unique to humans, forms the bridge between two otherwise separate, independent people.

It binds us together. Because speech is the bridge between people, the values and ethics that surround it are influential as they touch on the essence of how we treat the people around us.

This week’s parshah, Behar, states: “One person shall not hurt his fellow.” (Vayikra 25:17) The Talmud (Bava Metzia 58b) explains that the verse is referring to causing emotional hurt through speech. The Talmud goes on to provide many examples, all relating to hurting people where they are most vulnerable, such as reminding a person who has done repentance of their previous wrongdoings, or a convert of their background, or to say judgmental things to a person who is suffering.

The Talmud even extends the category of hurtful speech to causing any emotional hurt or disappointment, such as asking a

shopkeeper how much a particular item costs if you have no intention of buying it. Clearly, we need to be supremely sensitive to how our words will be received by another person, even if no harm is intended.

This mitzvah of proper speech goes right to the heart of the kind of society we wish to create. Using the power of speech for good is an expression of our partnership with God in creating the world.

The Sefer HaChinuch says positive speech sows peace among people and within society at large. In other words, a peaceful, harmonious society is created through speech that is ethical, sensitive, kind and compassionate, while a divisive, hostile society is characterized by aggressive, harsh, hurtful speech.

But, there is a deeper dimension to the power of speech. The Maharal (a 16th-century Prague scholar) says harmful speech constitutes a direct assault on the Tzelem Elokim — the Divine image, the Godly soul — within a person. He explains that wronging another person can affect different aspects of the human being. The wrongdoing can strike at another person’s possessions or money, or it can strike at their body, their physical being. He says verbal abuse is uniquely pernicious because it strikes at the neshamah — at the soul, which is the very essence of the human being.

PUBLIC SHAMING AS ‘MURDER’ It is in this context that we can understand the dramatic statement of the Talmud (Bava

Metzia 58b) that shaming another person in public is considered a form of murder.

The Maharal explains, based on the Gemara, that when a person is shamed in public, their face becomes ashen. He says the Tzelem Elokim is physically manifest through the glow on a person’s face. This becomes obvious when, at the point of death, the soul leaves the body and the face (and the body) of the corpse turn ashen.

The glow emanates from the spiritual energy of the soul. So, if a person is shamed to such an extent that the glow leaves his face, it indicates that the Tzelem Elokim has, so to speak, been knocked out of such a person.

Of course, it works the other way as well.

Words of praise and acknowledgement make a person’s face glow. Kind, gentle words, words of warmth and encouragement, nurture the souls of those around us.

The Maharal quotes a midrash (Vayikra Rabba 4), which states that the soul of every human being is in God’s hands, and that God therefore defends it. This is how the Maharal explains the Gemara, which says God considers it a direct affront when someone uses the power of words to harm another human being. The Talmud goes so far as to say (Bava Metzia 59a) that even in a time when it is difficult to access Hashem, nevertheless the “Gates of Heaven” are always open to a person who calls out in pain from the hurtful words of another person.

couple of years ago, I had an encounter at my favorite grocery store in Royal Oak that I still think about today. I was in the produce section when I happened upon a group of elementary school students, probably in fourth or fifth grade, with two teachers who were talking to them about fruits and vegetables.

I was immediately intrigued.

I wondered if it was maybe a lesson about math and budgeting or maybe an economics class and the concept of supply and demand. But no; as one of the teachers spoke, picking up different items throughout her teaching, it was clear that this was a lesson about food. Where it comes from, how it gets to our stores and why it’s important for

Greenberg is a Go in August Invitational returns to a former home for 30th annual event.

T

here will be a 30th annual Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf and Tennis Invitational after all.

The milestone event was supposed to be held June 8, 2020, at Franklin Hills Country Club in Farmington Hills, but it was postponed to Sept. 14, 2020, by the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation because of the COVID-19 pandemic and later canceled.

It was the first time in the invitational’s history that it was canceled.

A new date of July 7, 2021, at Franklin Hills was announced last year. But the invitational won’t be held that day or at Franklin Hills.

It will be held Aug. 23 at Tam-O-Shanter Country Club in West Bloomfield Township, the invitational’s home for many years before moving more than 10 years ago.

The invitational will look different than in past years, of course. There will be fewer attendees because of COVID-19 gathering restrictions and everything will be held outdoors.

And there will be no walk-ins for the dinner and sports panel.

Dinner reservations must be made by Aug. 9.

“No walk-ins shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. We need to know how many people will be there so we can plan accordingly,” said Sari Cicurel, the foundation’s executive director.

“We normally get between

10 and 20 walk-ins,” Cicurel said. “Many will call or text me during the day of the invitational.”

The landscape of COVID-19 restrictions changes frequently, so Cicurel doesn’t feel comfortable predicting what might be happening in August in relation to the invitational.

“The bottom line is the foundation will follow TamO-Shanter’s rules,” she said.

“Tam-O-Shanter gets its guidance from the state and CDC (Centers for Disease Control).

We’re not going to jump over anybody.

I feel very strongly that we will present a safe invitational.”

Cicurel said she’s knows the economic fallout from the pandemic may prevent some golfers and sponsors from participating in this year’s invitational, but she’s been pleased so far with the response from sponsors.

Some are taking out a new sponsorship after allowing the foundation to keep their sponsorship money last year, she said, and some have transferred their 2020 sponsorship to this year’s event.

The foundation made a smaller-than-usual donation from the invitational to the Karmanos Center Institute at

the Lawrence and Idell Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in Farmington Hills last year, Circurel said, but it was able to fully fund the Dr. Steven and Evelyn Rosen Stars of Tomorrow scholarships.

The invitational is the major source of funding for the scholarships.

One reason for the postponement and cancellation of last year’s invitational was Franklin Hills’ decision not to host non-member events.

With that roadblock still in place this year, foundation officials turned to Tam-O-Shanter to host the invitational.

“We could have had a June date at Tam-O-Shanter, but I didn’t trust June. I’m more comfortable with August,” Circurel said, expressing concerns about COVID-19 restrictions.

“We’re very happy with the Tam-O-Shanter staff. They have been exceptional to work with,” she said.

The 2020 invitational award winners will instead receive their awards in 2021.

Gossage will receive the Hank Greenberg Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award, Keteyian will receive the Dick Schapp Memorial Award for Excellence in Media, and the Grenader family and Camp Mak-A-Dream will receive the Barry Bremen Memorial Inspiration Award.

ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap is expected to be the emcee for the awards presentations and sports panel at the dinner, which also includes a raffle, live auction and door prizes.

With everything being held outdoors, Cicurel isn’t allowing a certain four-letter meteorological word that starts with “R” to enter her vocabulary.

OVERNIGHT CHALLAH BANANA PECAN FRENCH TOAST I always make more of this than I need because leftovers are heavenly. As much a dessert (bread pudding) as a breakfast dish, it’s super luxurious and delicious. Change up the recipe by substituting fruit or berries (not strawberries), nuts or by adding or substituting chocolate chips for the nuts.

Ingredients ¼ cup (half stick) butter, melted ¾ cup light brown sugar ½ cup pure maple syrup 6 large eggs 1½ cups milk 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract 2 tsp. ground cinnamon 12 cups 1-inch challah bread cubes 4 sliced bananas (about 2 cups) 1-cup chopped or halved pecans Garnish: Powdered sugar Directions Spray a 9 x 13-inch or equivalent attractive baking dish with nonstick-cooking spray or brush with melted butter. Drizzle butter. Sprinkle brown sugar over and drizzle the maple syrup over. Set aside.

Combine milk, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and cinnamon in a large bowl and whisk well.

other’s Day is nearly here. This year, the date set aside expressly to pay tribute to mothers everywhere is this Sunday, May 9.

Most moms don’t ask for much. They just want a little acknowledgement and perhaps a day off from everyday responsibilities — Annabel like preparing or Cohen organizing meals.

If you’re the only mom in your family, you may want someone else to do the cooking if it’s usually your duty.

If you’re honoring a mom, you may be looking for ways to pamper her without fighting the crowds at restaurants or clubs, especially while social distancing is still a very good idea.

You probably know what you or someone else likes. My own mother claims to want or need “nothing,” and would rather just spend a special meal with her family. So, in my family, there will be cooking.

Breakfast or brunch is the easiest meal to prepare and a delightful way to begin the day.

And preparing foods ahead of time or with a blender or food processor is a fail-safe way to make breakfast food fancy, fast and delicious. Of course, few things are better than fresh bagels and lox. But for other ideas try some of the recipes below and add a big bowl of fresh-cut fruit or just fresh berries. Trust me, mom will be thrilled.

You can either serve as is in the baking dish or wait 10 minutes for the French toast to cool a bit and turn the entire baking dish over onto a serving dish (it will be caramelized).

Serve with a large spoon or cut into servings. Makes 12 or more servings.

MARINATED MINI FRESH MOZZARELLA BALLS WITH MIXED GREENS Ingredients Mozzarella: ½ pound fresh water-packed mozzarella cheese balls, halved (about ¾-inch in diameter) 12 grape or cherry tomatoes, halved lengthwise 3 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 3 Tbsp. white balsamic vinegar ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley or basil leaves ¼ tsp. dried red pepper flakes (optional) 1 tsp. kosher salt Fresh ground black pepper to taste

Directions Combine all mozzarella ingredients in a medium bowl and toss well to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 2 or more hours (up to a day ahead), turning the balls once or twice. Serve the Mozzarella over the greens, drizzled with additional balsamic vinegar if desired. Makes 6 servings.

INDIVIDUAL BERRY TARTS WITH WHIPPED CREAM The easiest, prettiest dessert I’ve ever made.

Ingredients 1 sheet (½ package) frozen puff pastry sheets thawed 1 8-ounce block of cream cheese ⅓ cup powdered sugar 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2-3 cups berries (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries) frozen

Whipped cream (the kind in the can is fine) Directions Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment. Cut one sheet of the puff pastry into 6 squares.

Transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Use a fork to poke lots of holes in pastry square. Set aside.

Melt the cream cheese in a microwave-safe bowl (uncovered) for 40 seconds. Add the powdered sugar and lemon juice and stir until smooth. Stir together cream cheese, powdered sugar and lemon juice until smooth. Spread mixture all over the puff pastry squares (not to the edges).

Arrange the berries on top.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden. Serve immediately or at room temperature with whipped cream.

Makes 6 servings.

bigail Rojansky, violist with the Verona Quartet, began her musical leanings at a young age after coming to an agreement with her mom. Her professional accomplishments advanced as she came to agreements with others.

Although Rojansky wanted to concentrate on ballet classes, her mom wanted her to enroll in violin lessons, following the avocation of the youngster’s grandfather. The agreement had Rojansky studying both dance and violin, but over time, the ballet stopped, and a preference for viola took hold.

When the Verona Quartet formed some eight years ago — with violinists Jonathan Ong and Dorothy Ro as well as cellist Jonathan Dormand — there would be brainstorming discussions to come to agreements about what to play at concerts that have toured them to four continents.

With live appearance limitations forced by the pandemic, the group has conceded to digital concerts until recently. Masked and vaccinated, the quartet happily makes its second round of stage recitals for the Chamber Music Society of Detroit (CMSD) as the evening presentation also livestreams.

TWO CONCERTS “We’re delighted to be performing three pieces that we really love,” said Rojansky, whose group will be onstage starting at 5 and 8 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at the Seligman Performing Arts Center in Beverly Hills.

“The first is a contemporary piece (‘Quartet’) by Reena Esmail, who has combined Indian classical music with Western classical tradition in a magical way. A second piece is the Richard Strauss ‘Sextet,’ and for that, we will be joined by Nicholas Mariscal on cello

and Jordan Bak on viola; the piece comes from the Capriccio opera by Strauss. The third piece is the Dvorak ‘American Quartet.’

“The concert is strung from a broad range of our repertoire and a variety of generations and styles. The first two pieces pay reference and homage to folk cultures beyond that of the Western classical tradition. Dvorak is referencing late 19th century sounds and folk music he was hearing in America.”

Verona, on the faculty of Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music in Ohio, formed when members were advanced students at Indiana University. Their professional combination was encouraged by the Pacifica Quartet, which has been featured by the CMSD. “I went to a music day school in the San Francisco Bay area, where the violin students played viola,” Rojansky, 31, recalled.

“I ended up playing both fairly seriously until I decided to focus on the viola at Oberlin, where I did my undergraduate degree.

“After Indiana, we went [on faculty] to the Julliard School as a quartet and then to the New England Conservatory as a quartet. We’ve been so fortunate to have performed at places like Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.”

DIVERSE CULTURES Verona, whose recognition has included the 2020 Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award, performs music by many Jewish composers.

“I’ve been doing a lot of research, especially on Jewish composers who have been lost in history, and I’ve been struck by the incredible music that is out there and the prominent part of that music in classical repertoire,” said Rojansky, who had her bat mitzvah in California and has visited relatives in Israel.

“When it was an anniversary of Mieczyslaw Weinberg, a very famous and beloved Jewish composer, we performed Weinberg works within that season.

“We love and play a lot of Shostakovich, who was an advocate of Weinberg.”

With an interest in mixing the artistry of different cultures, Verona worked with Chamber Music Abu Dhabi to appear before audiences in the United

Arab Emirates (UAE). One requested project involved a collaboration with local poets.

“Poetry is a very important part of the artistic culture in the UAE,” Rojansky explained.

“Their poets are celebrities, kind of like rock stars, and we suggested some Western classical music. The poets listened and wrote poems in Arabic — we got English translations — based on this music they had never heard. Without the background, they got the essence.”

Verona, which has performed in Kalamazoo and participated in a music competition at the University of Michigan, has continuing goals that involve diversity in composers, timelines, styles and cultural origins with a connecting story.

They chose the name Verona because of its prominence in the storylines of William Shakespeare.

local artist had more creativity to share after Lawrence Street Gallery in Ferndale previously presented his show, “Rene Lichtman: A Retrospective 1960-2018, Paintings & Collage.” Lichtman of West Bloomfield now returns to the fine arts gallery cooperative with a collection of new abstract paintings.

His exhibit, “Chance/ Choice,” opens today, May 6, and continues through May 30, including two receptions and an artist’s lecture. Admission is free.

Interested in art since his early childhood in France, Lichtman is probably better known in the Jewish community as a founding member of the organization Hidden Children and Child Survivors of Michigan, and for speaking at the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills. He tells visitors about hiding with a Christian family during World War II before reuniting with his mother.

Briefly, Lichtman was 13 in 1950 when he and his mother settled in Brooklyn. In 1969, he moved to Detroit for work on a documentary about the League of Revolutionary Black Workers, the muchpraised film, Finally Got the News. He earned degrees at Wayne State University in fine arts, mass communication and a Ph.D. in instructional technology. He worked in nursing education at Beaumont Healthcare System. His family with wife, Cathy, includes three children and three grandchildren.

Lichtman also admires the geometric, lyrical abstract paintings of California artist Richard Diebenkorn.

BAUHAUS INFLUENCE Lichtman has praise for Bauhaus, German architect Walter Gropius’ school of design, architecture and applied arts (1918-33). The pioneering style developed there continues to influence modern design.

“The movement’s architects agreed to use principles of classical architecture in their most pure form: without ornamentation of any kind,” Lichtman explained. The work of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, a follower of Bauhaus, offers “the most pure example of geometric constructivism.”

Lichtman defined his artistic style as “geometry and structure, with a painterly touch. My painting has emotional elements in terms of texture.”

His show’s title reflects “a chance element when I begin to paint,” he said. “Then the arbitrary linear elements develop, which help me make color, design, balance, structure and choices to complete the work.” For this series, he explored what would happen after covering the surface of a blank canvas with one color.

“It forces you to make different decisions,” Lichtman said. “The relationship changes. Putting light orange on a yellow background is very different than orange on top of a white canvas.”

“Abstract painters paint from what their eyes can’t see but their mind does,” said artist Ed Tillery, a member of Lawrence Street Gallery. “We are glad to have Rene in our studio because his abstracts are innovative and new.”

Sir Anthony Hopkins just won his (second) best actor Oscar for The Father. Next January, he is scheduled to start filming One Life in London, a bio-pic about Sir Nicholas Winton (1909-2015), a British banker who arranged the rescue of 669 Czech children, mostly Jewish. Winton brought them to England on the eve of WWII. Production of the film was delayed once, already. I hope there are no further delays. Sir Anthony is 83 and I’d hate for him not to play Sir Nicholas due to illness, etc.

favorite neighborhood restaurant in Oak Park is off to a fresh start.

Eddie’s Gourmet Restaurant & Bar adapted last year when Michigan’s pandemic safety order ended service inside restaurants and bars. Everything was going well with the carryout orders; then, a grill grease fire on Oct. 15 shuttered the place.

Regular customers were afraid — especially because of the COVID pandemic Esther — that they’d never dine at Allweiss Eddie’s again. When owner Ingber Contributing Eddie Hanna reopened on Writer March 1, happiness reigned.

The tiny eatery near Lincoln Shopping Center looks better than before. The only components untouched during the extensive renovation were large airy windows along two walls and the tiled floor. This refreshed Eddie’s features a new heating and cooling system, an added second entrance and a prettier decor. The improvements include new granite counters, burgundy-red seats and burgundy swirl pendant lights.

However, Eddie’s remains a cozy space with 18 counter-side seats, seven tabletops and two booths.

It’s reassuring to see the tried-and-true gourmet entrees back. Featuring top-quality meat, fish and poultry, the list includes Choice Steak Diane, Veal Picanti, Fresh Cold-Water Ruby Red Trout and Chicken Marsala. These popular dishes are known for their affordable prices compared to those at bigger and fancier restaurants.

Two specialties unlisted on the menu — just ask for them — are Hawaiian fries (without pineapple) and tender Roma chicken bites. They’re saucy and shareable.

Throughout its history of different owners and name changes, the unlikely fine dining spot also remains focused on simpler fare.

There are items like hamburgers, Greek and Caesar salads, steak fries and omelets.

Portions are generous.

I’m a soup person who adores Eddie’s thick and creamy tomato bisque. This soup, and lemon rice, are always available, plus a rotating choice. The stuffed pepper soup from my recent visit had the expected ground beef, rice and peppers in a tasty, savory broth.

Something else fairly new to mention is Eddie’s liquor license. Now adults may order beer, wine and hard liquor drinks.

The friendly man running the place is Eddie Hanna, an Iraqi-born Chaldean.

“I started here at 17 as a dishwasher and worked my way up,” he said. Hanna’s original boss, Peter K, bumped up the ambitions of a former Biff ’s counterside diner by putting gourmet dishes on his menu. After Peter K, the restaurant continued as Giorgio’s, for its then-proprietor. Hanna bought Giorgio’s in 2003.

Family members working with Hanna are his wife, Wasa, who makes a dynamite pistachio pie, and their cooking son, Brandon, one of the couple’s 21-year-old male triplets.

ver the last 12 years, Matt Ran has held nearly every role at Telemus — from intern to wealth analyst to chief operating officer. Now, he has a new title — partner.

The oldest son of the firm’s founder, Gary Ran, recently Matt Ran became the company’s sixth partner, representing the next generation of leadership for the Southfield-based familyowned business.

Telemus provides financial advisory, asset and liability management, investment management and a host of new services to wealthy families, professionals, entrepreneurs, company executives, new and institutional investors, retirees and others.

“I’m excited about this new role,” Ran says. “It’s an honor to carry my father’s vision into the future as we continue to expand and grow.”

While he jokes that he’s spent his “whole life” in and out of the office, Ran officially joined the Telemus team in 2008. He is a graduate of Wayne State University with a B.A. in economics. He earned an M.B.A from the Virginiabased Jack Welch Management

Institute.

Matt is also active in the Jewish community, serving on the boards of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit (where he is co-chair for Detroit’s National Young Leadership Cabinet), Michigan ORT, the Jewish Community Center and Yad Ezra. In the midst of it all, he and his wife, Jodie, are busy raising their two young children.

“Matt has taken it upon himself to develop the skillset necessary to lead Telemus into the future,” Gary Ran says Gary Ran. “I think there are a lot of positives to [working with family] — trust, familiarity — we are proud to call him a partner.”

Matt’s brother, Michael, moved back to Michigan from Philadelphia several years ago and joined the company, too.

llen Jay Ross died on April 17, 2021 at home surrounded by family after a life well lived. He was 88.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1933, he attended the Little Red School House and was bar mitzvah by Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan at the Society for the Advancement of Judaism. He was always proud of this as it represented him well as the modern thinker that he was.

Allen was known as “Mr. Republican” and was a leading politician through his time at the Horace Mann School, (1951).

His dream was to pursue a life in politics, but he was a man of duty and followed into the family business.

After graduation from Rutgers University in 1955, he enlisted in the Navy, reporting to the USS Salem C-139 in the south of France. The ship was the last big gun cruiser and served as the flagship Sixth Fleet with fourstar Admiral “Ace” Lyons at its helm. Being a credit to his uniform and a good citizen of the United States of America gave Allen his wings.

He came back to the U.S.A. to begin his distinguished career in the meat industry, starting at Hygrade Food Products, a family-owned business built by his grandfather Samuel Slotkin in 1914. That gave him his roots.

One of the top five meat packers, their loyalty remained with the frankfurter; known for creating the first all-beef hot dog. He began his career in the beef end of the business; ultimately to follow his father’s love of sausage, focusing on processed beef and natural casings.

He was deeply impacted by the loss of his father at a young age (rheumatism of the heart following survival of the Spanish flu). Allen was raised by a single mother and his grandparents for seven years until his

beloved stepfather, Benjamin Hyman M.D. joined the family.

He grew up extremely close Allen Ross with his brother, c. 1955 Martin Henry Ross, as well as his Slotkin, Ross and Bilgore cousins. They summered together on the Jersey Shore in the towns of Elberon, Deal and Little Silver and remained close throughout his life.

Allen married Brooke Alison Roberts (Grace) of New York City in 1965 and had twin daughters in 1966. His grandmother Fanny Slotkin knew that he would be a credit to Hygrade Food Products to help maintain the good name of the empire which his grandfather built; she wished that he become a good husband, a good father and that everything good should follow wherever he turned and happiness should prevail in his household. He was that and more. He was a gentlemen’s gentleman and a man of action with a strong moral compass.

Allen’s greatest legacy was his character, which was imbued by his joie de vivre. He stood for decency, embodied love and warmth, charm and had great presence. His impact was vast.

He led the family and influenced others with his grace and wisdom. He was honorable, loved and admired. Within minutes of entering a room, people gravitated toward him.

Allen was charitable in his life with a focus on education.

He supported Detroit’s innercity schools with books and hot dogs. While at university, doing a study on the workers rebellion of the 17th/18th centuries, he failed to find any books on the subject. The librarian told him to go to Princeton University Library for what he needed.

He never forgot this and went

on to create the Allen Jay Ross Library endowment at Rutgers, 1958. The income has purchased many thousands of history books for generations of students.

Allen was active most of his life in cultural and civic affairs.

Even as a transplanted New Yorker, he was deeply involved in his community of Detroit, supporting most specifically the Music Hall, for almost 40 years.

He recently passed his trustee baton to his twin daughters to whom he was deeply devoted, Amanda Ross Bacon and Alison Ross Green.

Ever the optimist at 70, believing in the revival of Detroit, he moved downtown.

He became president of Detroit Towers Condo Association and was a director of the Villages of Detroit. Allen was preservation trustee of the Detroit Yacht Club.

He was a member of the DAC, the Prismatic Club of Detroit, Franklin Hills Country Club and was a longstanding member of the Jewish community of Detroit and Temple Beth El since 1958. He held many different roles, including co-chairman of Temple Art, Mortgage Reduction and the Ways and Means Committee.

In addition to his wife, Judy, he is survived by his twin daughters, Alison and Amanda; his sons-in-law, Jonathan Green and Zack Bacon; his grandsons, Oliver Green, Charles Green and Samuel Green. He is also survived by his nieces and nephew, Katherine Ross (Govan), Jane Ross (Yaffe), David Ross (Amy) and their families. Allen was also married to Adria Aronow (Roush) of Detroit, 1975-1981.

He was predeceased by his beloved niece Constance Lynn Ross.

UDO L. SALK, 90, of Highland, Mich., died April 26, 2021.

He was a graduate of Cass Tech High School, where he met Garey; they were blessed to share 66 years of marriage.

As a young man, Udo served two years in the Army, during the Korean conflict. He became an electrical contractor, starting his own company in Detroit, serving the community for more than half a century.

Udo was an active Southfield Rotarian for many years. He passed on his love of bowling and golf to his sons and grandchildren. Family was always a priority, providing a great sense of joy and satisfaction.

Mr. Salk is survived by his wife, Getrude “Garey” Salk; sons and daughtersin-law, Dan and Beth Salk, Randy Salk, Curtis Salk, and Raymond and Kim Fountain; grandchildren, Brendan Salk, Madelynn and Mark Knapp, Shannon Salk, Kristen and Steve Wolf, Angie and Ken Majewski, and Lee Fountain; great-grandchildren, Chloe Radatz, Skylor Majewski, Wren Wolf and Shayda Wolf.

EMILY MEREDITH WEITZ, 35, of Royal Oak, died April 26, 2021.

She loved to travel from a young age, including summer camps in Brazil and Sweden, backpacking through Europe for three months by herself in her college years (against the advice of her family) and, most recently, on a girls’ trip to Portugal with her mother in 2019 just prior to COVID. Outside of family and friends, she loved nothing more than her three cats, including her dear Bot Bot. She regularly volunteered at the Humane Society and was a strong advocate for pet adoption.

Emily was a longtime vegan before most people knew what that meant, and she ensured that any birthday or Chanukah presents not include any leather products. What many people do not know about Emily is that she was a presidential scholar at Oakland University and was fluent in Spanish.

Ms. Weitz is survived by her beloved parents, Sara and Edwin Weitz; devoted brother and sister-in-law, Michael Weise and Maddi Ma; loving niece, Aiyla Weitz; many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

PHYLLIS (née Alvin) WELLING, 94, passed away peacefully at home in West Bloomfield Township on April

23, 2021.

Born on Aug. 1, 1926, to Anne and Jay Alvin, Phyllis grew up in Detroit. As a teenager, she met her future husband, Robert Welling, during local dance classes.

After graduating high school, she attended the University

of Wisconsin while Robert served in World War II. After he returned from his tour of duty, Phyllis joined him at the University of Michigan; they married in 1947. Their devoted partnership lasted 70 years.

Phyllis delighted in her family and in her wide social circle. An active community member, she led Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, volunteered at Sinai Hospital and was a lifelong member of the National Council of Jewish Women, serving as Michigan chapter president from 1978 through 1980.

Mrs. Welling is survived by her son and daughter, Eric Welling and Joann (Lawrence) Blankstein; grandsons, Steven (Rachel) Welling, Shawn (April) Boucké, Brian Blankstein (Julia Bninski), Jeffrey (Laura) Blankstein; and great-grandchildren, Chloe, Ford and Hazel Blankstein. Phyllis’ family members are deeply thankful for the quality of life that she enjoyed in her final years and wish to express particular gratitude to Elnora Cano.

Born in 1941, he graduated from Mumford High School and Wayne State University.

As a professor of political science since 1964 at Macomb County and Wayne County community colleges, he impacted many people.

Students often said his class was a pivotal point in their lives.

Marvin was involved in social and political issues: environmental, human rights and peace since the 1960s as well as running for political office. His passion was the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana.

wner Nerio Lelli of Lelli’s Inn on Woodward, Detroit, was about as round as a ping pong ball and twice as bouncy … He was a thoroughly likeable fellow, full of buoyant good humor and optimism, who liked to refer to himself in the third person as “the doctor.”

Signor Lelli would tell you half seriously, half kiddingly, that his was the best restaurant in Detroit … and he was the best chef … After you met him Danny and talked with Nerio, you Raskin Senior Columnist probably would have agreed with him.

The “doctor” business came from the fact that Nerio was an original or inventive chef and, rightly so, considered himself a true doctor of culinary arts.

Lelli’s was located in a building that could probably be described as horribly wonderful

or wonderfully horrible … Anyway, they don’t make ’em that way anymore.

The walls were stippled green, the ceiling was quite low and the place was a mass of arches, little alcoves and tiny rooms … But, Lelli’s had a lot more charm and atmosphere than most newer, more modern places.

Nerio wouldn’t have moved to a new building if he could have afforded it … and he could.

The thing that made Lelli’s great was the food … The menu was loaded with house specials, many of these Lelli’s own, and everything was prepared to order.

All the dishes on Lelli’s menu were good, some of them were just better than others …

A big favorite was the cannelloni, a simple Italian dish that elevates pasta from the mundane to the superb.

Another notable dish, the braciole of beef Lelli, was wonderful … This was a slice of prime beef rolled around a stuffing of cheese, pine seeds, garlic and topped with an ambrosia sauce.

Among the items that made Lelli’s reputation was his family steak for four … This mammoth porterhouse was broiled and brought to your table, sliced and served with Palmina.

There was no liquor at Lelli’s but it had a fine wine list.

OLDIE BUT GOODIE … Many years ago, a Jewish lady was stranded at a fashionable resort hotel that did not admit Jews and asked for a room … The desk clerk looked down at his book and said, “Sorry, but the hotel is full.”

“But your sign says that you have vacancies,” said the lady.

The desk clerk stammered and then said curtly, “We do not admit Jews.”

“I’ll have you know that I converted to your religion,” she said The desk clerk said, “Oh yeah, let me give you a little test. How was Jesus born?”

“He was born to a virgin named Mary in a little town called Bethlehem. And he was born in a manger,” she said.

“That’s right,” said the hotel desk clerk.

“And why was he born in a manger?”

“Because,” the Jewish lady said, “a jerk like you wouldn’t give a Jewish lady a room for the night!”

Mondale: A Friend to Israel

F

ormer Vice President of the United States Walter Mondale passed away on April 19, 2021, at the age of 93. Most of the obituaries for Mondale applauded him as a staunch friend of Israel. As the JTA’s Ron Kampeas stated, “Mondale was from an era when being pro-Israel and progressive were often synonymous.”

There are 245 pages in the William Davidson Digital Archive of Jewish Detroit History with content about Mondale. The vast majority are Mike Smith from the 1970s and 1980s when Alene and Graham Landau Mondale, son of a Methodist Archivist Chair minister, was U.S. senator from Minnesota (1964-1976), vice president of the United States (1977-1981) and candidate for president in 1984. He also served as ambassador to Japan (1993-1996).

As an American politician, Mondale did set some modern political precedents. Unlike most of his predecessors, he was an active vice president, a role that successors such as Al Gore, Joe Biden, Dick Cheney and Mike Pence continued to follow. Mondale made a pathbreaking decision when he named a woman, Geraldine Ferraro, as his vice presidential running mate in 1984. She was the first and only woman on a presidential ticket until Hillary Clinton’s run for president in 2008.

Unfortunately, for Mondale, he was also known for his landslide loss to Ronald Reagan, one of the worst presidential election defeats in history.

Throughout his career, Mondale was known for his good humor, his integrity and his political convictions. He was a class act. Moreover, as the stories and reports in the JN bear out, Mondale was a steadfast friend to American Jews and to the State of Israel.

Mondale is first mentioned in the Sept. 3, 1965, issue of the JN. There is a small report about his introduction of Vice President Hubert Humphrey at a Histadrut dinner in Minnesota.

Mondale also traveled to Israel. A report in the Aug. 26, 1966, JN cited Sen. Mondale

as one of three American representatives to attend the dedication of Israel’s new Knesset building. He also led a delegation, one that included Detroit Mayor Coleman Young, to Israel in 1978 to celebrate the nation’s 30th anniversary.

Mondale’s experiences led him to become a steadfast supporter of Israel. For example, he defended America’s annual aid to Israel.

In his 1984 presidential campaign, Mondale made freeing Soviet Jews a campaign issue. He did not tolerate antisemitism and, during this campaign, blasted his rival Jesse Jackson for dealing with Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam.

Perhaps Mondale’s best work involved the peace negotiations between Israel and Egypt in 1978.

An active participant as VP, he served as a buffer between Israel’s Prime Minster Menachem Begin and President Jimmy Carter.

The two men were wary of each other, and Mondale played a critical role as a trustworthy go-between for each of them.

Did Jews like everything Mondale said or did? Not always, but overall, he was a very good friend to Israel and to American Jews. The many stories in the JN are a testimony to this fact.

I’ll leave you with a piece of Mondale’s congratulatory message to Reagan after his election loss: “We rejoice in our freedom … in our democracy.” Now, isn’t that a fine way to recognize the spirit of America?
