Wrestlers focus on improvement

After a long hiatus and uncertainty if there was even going to be a season, wrestling is back at CC with expectations to raise the standard.

The season, which usually begins in November, was suspended, but on February 4, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that winter sports could resume. On Monday, February 8, practices at CC resumed, and the team returned to the mats.

This year, precautions have been taken because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tournaments consist of only four teams instead of 16, and the season’s schedule is shorter. Fans are not allowed into events, and only two family members per participant are allowed. The wrestlers are required to receive a Covid-19 test before all matches, but they do not have to wear masks when they compete.

The first event of the year, on February 13, included wins against Traverse City Central (63-9) and Rockford (57-9).

Despite the challenges this year, the team has worked on staying in shape at home.

Senior captain Phil Burney said, “This year we are doing the best we can to stay motivated and positive about the season even though it’s been set back.”

Even though the season has had its challenges, it is still an opportunity for personal and team growth.

Coach Hancock added, “I hope our guys progress athletically, physically, mentally, and just become better individuals. We have goals of winning, but we want to ‘raise the standard’ -- this year’s motto. When we live up to the standard, we will find success.”
