Andrew Kil ’23 Repeats as American Legion Oratorical Winner
Kil’s winning speech focused on civic engagement as well as the importance of voting and preserving our democracy. Kil received a $2,000 scholarship and will compete at the National Oratorical Contest later this year.
The American Legion Department of Michigan sponsors the annual competition as part of its effort to promote civic engagement and encourage young people to become active and engaged citizens.
The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students.
Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.
