ear Alumni, Family, and Friends of Detroit Catholic Central High School,
The start of a new school year always brings a sense of excitement and purpose. Here at Catholic Central, that feeling is stronger than ever. The spirit that has carried this school for nearly a century is still alive and well.
We’re closing in on a major milestone: our 100th anniversary in 2028. That kind of longevity doesn’t happen by accident. It takes hard work, a clear mission, and people like you, who believe in what we’re doing. In our next issue of the Aluminator, we’ll be announcing some of the ways we plan to mark the occasion. Stay tuned.
In this issue, we’re talking about legacy. That includes the legacy of our “Big Three” awards—the Dillon, Whelan, and Ranalletti—which honor the character and excellence we strive to instill in every Shamrock. Legacy also means looking ahead. We’re highlighting the importance of our Operations Endowment, which supports the daily needs of the school. It’s not flashy, but it’s essential. Gifts to the
Operations Endowment help ensure that Catholic Central can keep doing what it does best not just today, but forever. It’s how we secure the school’s future in perpetuity.
The world is changing fast, but the mission of Catholic Central remains the same. We’re still focused on forming young men who are strong in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. Thanks to your continued support, we are ready to do even more.
The world is a better place with more Shamrocks in it.
Gratefully,
Ed Turek ’85 President Detroit Catholic Central High School
The mission of Catholic Central remains the same: forming young men who are strong in faith, character, and purpose— today and forever.

t Catholic Central High School, we often talk about legacy; what we inherit, what we build, and what we pass on. One of the most powerful ways alumni, parents, and friends of the school can leave a lasting mark is with a gift to our Operations Endowment.
Unlike designated funds that are tied to specific programs or capital improvements, the Operations Endowment directly supports the day-to-day mission of the school. It helps cover essential expenses; classroom resources, utilities, and ongoing campus maintenance. The Operations Endowment ensures the school can operate smoothly year-after-year without compromising quality, values, or vision.
The Operations Endowment is not a bank account we dip into. It is a permanent fund, carefully invested so that a portion of the earnings can be used annually, while the principal remains untouched. This structure provides stable, predictable income that allows the school to plan confidently for the future and respond to challenges without sacrificing its standards.
Gifts to the Operations Endowment represent an investment in future generations of Shamrocks. They help keep Catholic Central High School strong, not only for the students walking our halls today, but also for those who will walk them in the next 100 years. It is a way of saying that you believe in the mission, and that you want to make sure it endures.
Catholic Central’s mission is to form men of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. The Operations Endowment helps make that possible, quietly, steadily, and permanently.
The Operations Endowment currently totals just over $1 Million. The goal is to grow the Operations Endowment to $4 Million by our centennial celebration in the year 2028.
To learn more about how you can support the Operations Endowment or leave a Legacy Gift to Catholic Central High School, please contact the Office of Advancement at (248) 596-3838 or visit www.catholiccentral.net/give.

ear Alumni and Friends of Catholic Central,
It is with great excitement and gratitude that I write to you in my new role as Vice President of Advancement at Catholic Central. Having already been a part of this remarkable community as a JV Tennis Coach, I am truly honored to take on this expanded responsibility and help move our great school forward.
Throughout my 42-year career in business across industries, brands, and boardrooms, the most meaningful and lasting successes I’ve experienced have always come down to people: building strong teams, nurturing relationships, and aligning around a shared mission. That’s why I’m so inspired by the opportunity here at Catholic Central. This is more than a job; it is a chance to contribute to something with real purpose and impact.
My goal is simple but powerful: to help ensure that Catholic Central has the resources and strategic vision to continue forming men of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge for generations to come. That means supporting the
faculty, growing our donor base, investing in our students, and most importantly, connecting with you, our alumni.
Whether you graduated five years ago or 50, your story is part of what makes Catholic Central such a vibrant and enduring institution. I am eager to hear those stories, learn what CC has meant to you, and explore how we can work together to preserve and grow that legacy.
Together, let’s keep Catholic Central strong for today, and tomorrow.
With gratitude,
Charlie Siracusa Vice President of Advancement Detroit Catholic Central High School

Every spring, as graduation nears and the senior class prepares to take its final steps through the halls of Catholic Central, three young men are recognized not only for what they’ve accomplished, but for who they have become.
The Whelan, Ranalletti, and Dillon Awards, known as the “Big Three,” represent what it means to be a CC man: a scholar-athlete, a man of Christian character, and a dedicated student shaped by Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.
These awards span generations, uniting alumni through the shared values they reflect and the legacy they carry forward.
In the pages that follow, we celebrate each award’s meaning and history, and, in the words of those who received them, the lifelong impact of being named a Big Three Award Winner.
The oldest of the three, the Whelan Award was established in 1950 to honor Rev. James H. Whelan, CSB, Catholic Central’s fourth principal.
It is awarded annually to a senior who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement, athletic success, and is recognized by both faculty and peers as a true Christian gentleman.

MIKE SCHIMMEL ’69:
My recollection of the evening my classmates awarded me the Whelan evokes such unique nostalgia. So remarkable, 56 years on — practically a lifetime later — that the memory generates a kaleidoscope of youthful faces in my aging brain. Were we really that young and strong, as we prepared to launch into great adventures? Ah, youth! Thanks, CC, for granting me a lovely indulgence through this testimonial!
JOE URSO ’84:
When I entered Catholic Central in the fall of 1980 as a naïve, insecure 13-year-old, I never imagined receiving an honor like the Whelan Award. However, through hard work, perseverance, humility and with the guidance of my parents, coaches, teachers and Basilian Fathers, I grew into the best version of myself. Coaches like Mike Rodriguez and Tom Mach were more than mentors; they were lifechanging influences who believed in me and pushed me beyond what I thought possible. Catholic Central reinforced the values I was raised with: work hard, treat people the way you like to be treated, and give it your all.

ED TUREK ’85:
Still the most meaningful award I’ve ever received—especially because it was voted on by my classmates. An even prouder moment came 29 years later when my son AJ received the same honor.
JAKE MARMUL ’07:
When I found out my classmates had selected me for the Whelan Award, I remember feeling overwhelmed. It was humbling, and truthfully, I wasn’t sure I deserved it. Years later, the magnitude of what it meant hit me as I watched my 3 and 5-year-old daughters stop in the hallway, point to my photo, and light up. Someday, I hope their kids might do the sameand that it might add a little validity to my “back in the day” stories.
JOE SUHAJDA ’93:
Everything you need in life-Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge; you learn at CC. No one does it alone. It didn’t get any better on Breakfast Drive.
A.J. TUREK ’14:
Growing up, my love for Catholic Central was something I inherited — it was just part of me. During my four years there, that love grew because of the incredible people I was fortunate to meet. I’m forever honored that my peers selected me as a Whelan Award recipient, and deeply humbled to share that legacy with so many remarkable men — especially one: my father.

Founded in 1970 by Fr. Raymond Paramo, CSB, and named to honor Rev. Daniel Dillon, CSB, CC’s first principal and advocate for academic dedication, this award is presented to the graduate with the highest cumulative GPA.

MIKE MCGARRY ’78:
Catholic Central’s commitment to recognizing academic performance along with athletic success has produced an extraordinary culture that has helped make CC one of the preeminent high schools, not just in the State of Michigan, but across the country.
PAUL SWITAJ ’02:
My appreciation of my Catholic Central education has only deepened over the last 20 years of my adult life. As a father, husband, and surgeon, I now truly understand that the foundation of my family, faith, and professional life started in the hallways of Breakfast Drive! Being pushed by 20 other National Merit Semi-Finalists in my class certainly didn’t hurt either!
A.J. HONG-HUBER ’06:
Catholic Central instilled in me and my classmates the importance of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. That message guided me to where I am now, helping lead a nonprofit that protects the legal rights and financial health of people facing abusive debt collection practices. I am grateful for the many amazing teachers and coaches at CC who helped shape who I am now.
LOGAN WHITEHEAD ’13:
The Dillon Award may be an individual honor, but it was only possible because of the culture and values that surrounded me at CC. The school’s commitment to Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge, along with the incredible support I received from teachers, created the foundation for achievement. That environment pushed me to aim high and work hard while also reminding me that success is rarely a solo effort.
MATTHEW KOZMA ’21:
The education I received and the friendships I formed while attending CC were second to none. CC developed me as a man and set me up for success in my college experience, my career, and my relationships.
ANDREW KIL ’23:
Being a Dillon Award recipient was and will forever be a humbling experience. Even as a freshman, I recognized that CC’s academic culture was unmatched with its rich history and high standards, giving me something to strive for. Looking to the future, I have no doubt future graduating classes will exceed us and further CC’s legacy of scholastic excellence.
Established in 2016 in honor of Rev. Richard A. Ranalletti, CSB (Catholic Central’s 18th principal, 2000–2010 and second president, 2010–2012), this award recognizes the graduating senior who exemplifies Christian values through daily life at CC.
Voted on by peers and presented at commencement, it honors a student whose character, faith, and integrity most reflect the spirit of the school community.

MATT HIGGINS ’16:
Attending CC helped shape who I am. Getting involved in many extracurriculars and in the community gave me great experiences, valuable lessons, and lasting friendships. As a husband and father, I now live each day striving to reflect Christ, something CC deeply instilled in me.

NICHOLAS P. GESSLER ’17:
I am so grateful to have gotten to go to CC. Outstanding learning, making lifelong friendships, and becoming a person of character and peace are the cornerstones of a CC education. Thank you so much, CC.

CALEB WHITE ’20:
Being chosen by my peers as the recipient of the Ranalletti Award meant a lot to me because Catholic Central played such a huge role in my service to the community. My confidence to take on larger service projects came from the support that I received from my CC brothers and the staff. To this day, I get phone calls from the school asking how they can help. For me, The Ranalletti Award truly goes to the entire school. I was simply the contractor of their good works.
FINNIAN MCLENAGHAN ’23:
Right off the bat, I’d say CC aims to instill in all its young men the drive to become the best version of themselves. This fosters a culture and environment that nurtures confidence and a commitment to excellence.
DAVID KIBBEY ’24:
Service is at the heart of the Catholic Central education and our place as Christian men in society. It was an honor to live out that tenant of both my faith and education during my time at Catholic Central.

HONORING THE MEN OF CATHOLIC CENTRAL

JADEN PYDYN ’25:
Catholic Central proudly announces Jaden Pydyn ’25 as the recipient of the 2025 Fr. James H. Whelan Award, one of the school’s highest honors. A standout student-athlete, Pydyn is a multi-year varsity letter winner and team captain in both football and baseball. He has earned the respect of his coaches, teammates, and peers not only through his performance on the field, but also through his exceptional character and leadership.
Off the field, Pydyn has maintained an impressive 3.9 GPA, exemplifying academic excellence alongside his athletic achievements. This fall, Pydyn will take the next step in his journey at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he will continue to compete in both football and baseball while preparing to serve as an officer in the U.S. Army.

JAROD DUFIELD ’25:
Catholic Central is proud to present the Dillon Award to Jarod Dufield ’25. Jarod earned this honor with an incredible 4.969 GPA and will go on to study Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan.
During his time at CC, he made a lasting impact through his involvement in DECA, HOSA, and as an officer of the National Honor Society (SHS). He also generously gave his time volunteering at Ascension Providence Hospital, reflecting the spirit of service that defines a true Shamrock.

MATTHEW HAARALA ’25:
Matthew Haarala ’25 was awarded this year’s Ranalletti Award by his classmates and the committee due to his outstanding Christian leadership and values. Matthew was the rector of the fall Kairos Retreat, helping to bring other young men closer to Christ and to each other. He was a true inspiration to his fellow students and the community at large.
Matthew served over 200 hours in volunteer work to our local and school communities, including serving a wide range of agencies such as Blight Busters, Miracle League, and Alternatives for Women. Within the school community, Matthew tutored many of his CC brothers in the Study Hall program, and he devoted many hours within the various activities sponsored by our Student Government.

MORE THAN 50 YEARS LATER, THE CC BAND SWEATER FOUND ITS WAY HOME.
When Paul Schrier graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1973, he took with him a sense of pride, lifelong friendships, and a navy-blue letterman sweater decorated with medals from countless hours spent rehearsing, performing, and competing with the CC Band.
More than 50 years later, that very same sweater turned up, not in a closet, not at a garage sale, but across the Atlantic in London, England.
No one was more surprised than Paul himself. “My first reaction was disbelief,” he said. “I thought it might be a scam or a mistake. But when I saw the photo, I recognized it instantly.”
Though the medals he once pinned to the sweater were missing, Paul recognized a key detail only he would know: a black ink mark drawn as a prank down the “7” on the shoulder, etched by a bandmate during class one day.
Paul’s story is one of humble beginnings, lasting impact, and the power of belonging. When he arrived at CC in the fall of 1969, he was, in his words, what most people would call a ’Band Geek.’ With no athletic experience and limited formal music training, he found his place in the beginning band class led
Mr. William B. Watts ’40, his favorite teacher and lifelong mentor. He chose the clarinet after trying every available wind instrument. By the summer of 1970, he was on the marching band field, learning the discipline of formation drills while playing music. By sophomore year, he had earned the right to wear the official Catholic Central Band sweater, which soon became decorated with first and second place medals from state solo and ensemble competitions.
Wearing that sweater gave Paul a newfound sense of confidence. It was a symbol of contribution and connection, a mark that he belonged. He wore it proudly to concerts, pep rallies, basketball games, wrestling matches, hockey games, and even to class.
Although he didn’t wear it to football games, since he was in the marching band, clad in their own flashier uniforms, he still made his presence known at nearly every CC athletic event.
Paul’s senior year brought even more memories: second chair first clarinet in the concert band, twirling a rifle in the marching band color guard, and forming bonds with classmates like his late friend Sam Scalici ’73, who played first chair.
In 2018, while preparing for a move to a retirement community, Paul donated the sweater, along with a large bundle of clothing and household items, to a Christian Community Action (CCA) charity thrift store in Carrollton, TX. The store, which has since changed ownership, did not provide a receipt at the time, and likely did not maintain detailed records of the donated items.
How the sweater made its way from Texas to a shop in London remains unclear. However, a tag visible in one of the photos suggests it passed through a pawn shop in California along the way.
“Somewhere along the road, all the medals were stripped off,” he noted. “But this is how I remember the sweater, as it was proudly worn during my days at CC High.”
Thank you, Paul Schrier ’73, for sharing your remarkable story and for reminding us that some things, like the spirit of Catholic Central, never truly get lost.

In the postseason, they continued their flawless form, winning three straight playoff games and notching the Division 1 state title on Saturday night. Their balanced attack featured a powerful forward pack and an agile back line, putting opponents consistently on the back foot.

Detroit Catholic Central defended their Division 1 State Championship Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Forest Akers West in East Lansing, capturing their second consecutive title and sixth in the past 10 seasons.
The Shamrocks opened the tournament with an exceptional first round Friday, shooting a 283 to finish five-under par, 11 strokes ahead of the nearest competitor. Dillon Che ’25 led the charge with a 68, while Jack Whitmore ’26 followed closely behind with a 69.
Whitmore continued his strong performance into Saturday’s final round, carding a 70 to finish two-under par for the tournament. His total score of 139 earned him second place individually. Catholic Central’s team depth proved to be a key factor in the championship victory. Che finished with a two-day total of 146, while David Krusinski ’26 and Colin Davis ’26 each posted a 151. The Shamrocks’ consistent scoring helped secure the title with a final team score of 589, ahead of Rochester Adams (594) and Brighton (601).

MARIO MCDONALD ’20
DAVID SOFRAN
Detroit Catholic Central proudly celebrates four Shamrocks who have been inducted into the Catholic High School League (CHSL) Hall of Fame: Cameron Amine ’19, Brandon Kaleniecki ’00, Mario McDonald ’20, and David Sofran.

Wrestling standout Cameron Amine ’19 earned his place in the Hall of Fame following a standout high school career that included three individual state championships while he led the Shamrocks to three MHSAA team state titles. Amine continued his career at the University of Michigan, where he was instrumental in guiding the Wolverines to a Big Ten Championship and an NCAA Runner-Up finish, earning All-American and All-Big Ten honors three times. In his senior year, he transferred to Oklahoma State University, where he contributed to the Cowboys’ Big 12 Championship and NCAA Runner-Up finish, once again securing All-American honors at 165 lbs for the fourth time.

Brandon Kaleniecki ’00, a former student-athlete and current head hockey coach, was honored for his lasting impact on and off the ice. Known for his competitiveness as a player and his leadership as a coach, Kaleniecki continues to mentor young men through the values of discipline, teamwork, and character, embodying the mission of Catholic Central.

Mario McDonald ’20 was recently inducted into the CHSL Hall of Fame, a fitting honor for one of Catholic Central’s most decorated athletes. A ninetime NISCA All-American and nine-time MHSAA All-State swimmer, McDonald set multiple school, county, and league records while leading CC to three consecutive CHSL championships and three straight Oakland County championships. Poised to guide the Shamrocks into their first-ever MHSAA Division 1 state championship in 2020 before COVID-19 abruptly ended the season, his legacy at CC remains unmatched. At The Ohio State University, he continued to excel as a two-time team captain, five-time NCAA Division I All-American, Olympic Trials qualifier, and holder of multiple varsity records. Widely recognized for his speed, McDonald is the fastest Michigan native ever in the 50-meter freestyle and made history as the first Michigander to break 19 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. This fall, he began the next chapter of his career as a coach at Northwestern University.

Finally, Associate Athletic Director David Sofran was also inducted, recognizing his decades of service as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator. Coach Sofran’s dedication to faith, athletics, and personal growth has shaped countless studentathletes and left a lasting legacy within the Catholic Central community.
