DESTINATIONS’ COVER FEATURE

‘Touring’ The Queen Mary The Queen Mary isn’t simply a beautiful ship to view from afar. Half a dozen tours are available, providing visitors an opportunity to “get to know” the historic ship up-close and personal. Director of Attractions Brian Luallen says, “The Queen Mary has a tremendously varied and elegant history. It touches in all areas. In one way or another, there is a way for every person to connect to the ship.” Following is a quick look at each of these tours, as explained by Queen Mary staff: GHOSTS & LEGENDS Do You Believe in Ghosts? Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday-Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; 35-minute tour (approx.) – Find out why the Queen Mary is known as “the haunted ship” in this interactive, special effects adventure. Watch your step as you are guided through the deepest innards of the Queen Mary because you never know what lurks in the dark shadows of the ship. Explore the old boiler room where sweltering heat and tight quarters were a recipe for disaster. Visit the damaged hull that split a ship leaving few survivors and the old FirstClass swimming pool where swimmers are regularly spotted despite the fact the pool has no water. There’s no doubt the Queen Mary is full of mystery and lore and the Ghosts & Legends Show is sure to leave you asking the question, “If it wasn’t a ghost, what was it?” According to Luallen, the tour, which began 15 years ago, is going through a major refurbishment and adding new technology. THE GLORY DAYS Go Behind the Scenes of the Queen Mary Monday-Friday 11:30 a.m. & 3:30 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. & 5:30 p.m.; 1-hour tour (approx.) – You’ve heard the stories, the myths and legends, but now get the straight scoop about the majestic Queen Mary. Delve into the ship’s expansive past, including her groundbreaking construction, her time as a troopship during WWII and of course, her glory days as the world’s most luxurious and technologically advanced ocean liner. The Glory Days Tour is full of interesting anecdotes, fun facts and compelling true-stories about the legendary Queen Mary. Luallen says this tour focuses on the glamorous. “If you like Titanic, you’ll love this.” HER FINEST HOUR: A WWII TOUR Explore the Grey Ghost Monday-Friday 1:15 p.m. & 5:15 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 3:15 p.m. & 5:15 p.m.; 45-minute tour (ap-

prox.) – Learn the incredible true story of the Queen Mary and how her involvement played a pivotal role in guiding the Allied Forces to victory. Nicknamed the “Grey Ghost” after receiving a hauntingly stark paint job, the ship’s impressive speed and size made it an ideal troop hauler often carrying as many as 15,000 men in a single voyage. During her tour of duty, the Queen Mary set various world records for speed and cargo adding another layer to her already impressive tapestry of work. Luallen says that on weekends, tours are conducted by a WWII re-enactor. HAUNTED ENCOUNTERS The Queen of All Ghost Stories Daily Noon-2 p.m. and 4-6 p.m.; 1-hour tour (approx.) – With such a varied and intriguing past it’s not surprising that the Queen Mary has been voted one of the Top 10 Most Haunted Places in America by Time magazine! Get a detailed overview of the Queen Mary’s most haunted areas and paranormal hotspots. Explore the ship inside and out and hear stories about the ship’s most famous reported apparitions. According to Luallen, this tour used to be more of a psychic experience, but now it’s more of a participatory experience. THE SCORPION SUBMARINE 10 a.m.-6 p.m. – Descend into the once forbidden confines of this genuine, “Cold War Warrior.” Explore the torpedo rooms, the cramped crew quarters and the wide array of various valves, pipes and wires that made up this combat sub. Completely authentic, accurate and unchanged since the Cold War days, the Scorpion submarine gives guests the rare opportunity to get a first-hand glimpse of what life was like aboard a Russian submarine. SELF-GUIDED AUDIO TOUR Explore the Grandeur of the Queen Mary Daily 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; 1.5 to 2-hour tour (approx.) – Tour the Queen Mary at your own pace with our comprehensive Self-Guided Audio Tour. Learn the history of the Queen Mary while strolling the decks with our exclusive Queen Mary headset. Listen to the stories behind the pictures and the artwork of the legendary ship. From her groundbreaking construction to her royal launch, the Self-Guided Audio Tour is a great way to get to know the real Queen Mary upclose and personal. (Note: Audio equipment must be returned one hour prior to closing. A valid government issued ID will be required to check out audio devices.) ■
