2026 Experience Guide

City of Markham Land Acknowledgement

We begin today by acknowledging the traditional territories of Indigenous peoples and their commitment to stewardship of the land. We acknowledge the communities in circle. The North, West, South and Eastern directions, and Haudenosaunee, Huron- Wendat, Anishnabeg, Seneca, Chippewa, and the Mississaugas of the Credit peoples. We share the responsibility with the caretakers of this land to ensure the dish is never empty and to restore relationships that are based on peace, friendship, and trust. We are committed to reconciliation, partnership and enhanced understanding.

Mayor’s Welcome

On behalf of Members of Council, it is our great pleasure to welcome all players, families, and friends back to our community for this year’s Little Native Hockey League Tournament. We are thrilled to once again host this incredible event and to partner with this year’s new host community, Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory. Our world-class facilities are ready to welcome everyone for what promises to be another exciting week of competition, camaraderie, and community spirit.

This year’s tournament promises to be another exciting one, with over 270 teams and more than 4,000 players coming together to showcase their talent, teamwork, and love of the game. We are especially delighted to see the significant increase in girls’ teams participating this year, an inspiring reflection of the growing inclusivity and enthusiasm in Indigenous youth sports. Be sure to visit the popular Craft Market, featuring over 80 vendors offering a wonderful selection of Indigenous art, crafts, and local goods.

Get ready for another unforgettable tournament! Throughout your stay in Markham, know that the community, as well as local businesses, are ready to welcome you. We are proud of the relationship with the Little Native Hockey League and you, the players, families and friends. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the organizers, volunteers, and everyone involved in making this event possible. Welcome, and best of luck to all teams!

Greetings from the Little Native Hockey League

On behalf of the Little Native Hockey League, I offer heartfelt gratitude to Mayor Frank Scarpitti, the City of Markham, and Destination Markham for opening their doors and their hearts to First Nation communities from across Ontario as we gather for the 52nd Annual Little NHL Tournament on March 15 – 19, 2026.

Over the past year, the Little NHL Executive and the host First Nation, Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, have worked in close partnership with the City of Markham and Destination Markham to ensure this historic event reflects the very best of who we are. Rooted in the four pillars of the Little NHL—education, citizenship, sportsmanship, and respect—this collaboration embodies the values that have guided our tournament for more than half a century.

This tournament stands today because of the vision and determination of our Little NHL co-founders, who in 1971 created a space where our children and youth could play hockey in a place that honours them, uplifts them, and reminds them that they belong.

This year, we are honoured to welcome over 270 teams - surpassing the record set in 2025 - including a remarkable 59 girls’ teams, ten more than last year. With games taking place across 12 arenas and 16 ice pads, and more than 700 matchups scheduled over four and half days, we are preparing for an extraordinary and memorable tournament. None of this would be possible without the commitment of our partners, sponsors, and the many volunteers who give so generously of their time, energy, and spirit.

We look forward to a powerful and joyful celebration of hockey, culture, and community—one that strengthens our Nations and inspires our young people for generations to come.

Welcome from the Destination Markham Board Chair

Dear Esteemed Participants, Spectators, Coaches, and Partners,

As Chair of the Board of Directors at Destination Markham, it is my honour to extend a heartfelt welcome to all of you as we gather in our vibrant city for the 2026 Little Native Hockey League (LNHL) Tournament. Markham is proud to once again host this incredible event, standing in partnership with the City of Markham to celebrate the enduring legacy of First Nations hockey and the deep sense of community it fosters.

The LNHL is more than just a tournament—it is a celebration of culture, resilience, and passion. For more than five decades, this event has brought together young athletes, families, and supporters from across Ontario and beyond, creating lifelong memories and strengthening bonds that extend far beyond the rink. Hockey is a powerful unifier, and this tournament stands as a testament to the dedication, sportsmanship, and pride that define both the players and the communities they represent.

Hosting the LNHL is an honour that we take to heart. Markham is a city that thrives on diversity and inclusion, and we are committed to ensuring that every team, coach, and family feels welcomed and supported throughout their time here. Our world-class facilities, vibrant local businesses, and enthusiastic community are all prepared to help make this year’s tournament an unforgettable experience.

Beyond the competition, the LNHL carries a profound significance—it is a place where young athletes not only showcase their skills but also embrace the values of teamwork, perseverance, and respect. It is a platform for future hockey stars, a space for mentorship and growth, and a moment for all of us to come together to celebrate the strength and unity of First Nations communities.

On behalf of Destination Markham, I extend my deepest gratitude to the organizers, volunteers, and families who make this tournament possible. Your dedication and commitment are what make the LNHL such a special and inspiring event. I wish all participants the very best of luck and encourage everyone to cherish the friendships, experiences, and lessons that this tournament brings.

Enjoy the games, and may this year’s tournament be one to remember!

City of Markham’s Reconciliation Efforts

The City of Markham acknowledges taking action towards understanding Indigenous perspectives promotes reconciliation. We are committed to fostering strong relationships and partnerships with Indigenous communities, and this is evident through our:

City of Markham and Eabametoong First Nation Partnership

• On January 31, 2017, the City of Markham signed a historic agreement of Cultural Collaboration with Eabametoong First Nation, also known as Fort Hope

• Through the agreement, Markham and Eabametoong agree to:

• Promote social, cultural and economic collaboration

• Promote harmony and goodwill

• Increase public awareness

Indigenous Representation

We work closely with First Peoples Group, to ensure Indigenous representation and to seek input for various internal and external City events. Indigenous elders have acted as panelists during staff days, and we have sought their participation in special ceremonies, such as blessing the land before park openings.

Mandatory eLearning for all City of Markham Staff

Four Seasons of Reconciliation by First Nations University

• Every year we recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day, National Indigenous History Month and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation/Orange Shirt Day

Aaniin Community Centre & Library

Our newest community centre, Aaniin, was chosen to welcome Markham’s many diverse communities and in honour of our First Nation’s people.

Anwebi Aki

• In June 2022, we unveiled Anwebi Aki outside of Aaniin Community Centre & Library

• Anwebi Aki means “a place to rest and reflect”

• Through a partnership between the City of Markham and York Region District School Board, art was created using trees that were from Markham’s urban canopy. The result are wood sculptures/carvings that tell the story of the Seven Grandfather Teachings, guiding principles central to obtaining balance in one’s spirit and community

Agongos Public Art Installation

Located outside the Markham Civic Centre, Agongos is part of the York Region Experience Trail and reflects a commitment to Indigenous collaboration and storytelling through public art. Commissioned by the York Region Arts Council, the artwork was created by Ojibwe artist Donald Chretien in collaboration with Nipissing First Nation, with cultural narrative by Ojibwe Elder Shelley Charles of Georgina Island First Nation.

The installation honours Ojibwe teachings that celebrate the seed spreaders and pollinators of Mother Earth, inviting visitors to reflect, engage, and reconnect through art, story, and place.
