However, it’s important to follow the rule “don’t disturb – don’t destroy.” This means you must not disturb other people, plants, or animals. You are allowed to walk across someone else’s land and pick mushrooms or berries. However, you must not disturb wildlife. You are not allowed to walk right next to or across someone’s private yard, as this is considered an intrusion of privacy.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND THE MOUNTAINS
• Safety first – make sure you know your route and carry a map to find your way. Mobile phone coverage is not always reliable in the mountains.
• Keep an eye on the weather forecast – mountain weather can change quickly. Be prepared with proper clothing, good shoes, food, and a planned route.
• Bring all your trash back home – leave no trace.
• Let someone know your route and avoid hiking alone unless you are experienced in the mountains. If an accident happens and you need help, call 112 and ask for Mountain Rescue.

ROMBOLEDEN
Walk in historical footsteps on the Romboleden - Trail Pilgrimages have a long-standing tradition in our history, and even today we can follow the same paths once walked by medieval pilgrims.
Romboleden, Sweden’s longest pilgrimage trail at 900 km, stretches from Köping all the way to the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway, and winds through the majestic mountain landscape surrounding Lofsdalen. Here, the trail climbs high into the mountains, offering magical views in every direction – an experience that touches both body and soul.
A few kilometers west of Lofsdalen, along the road towards Strådalen, lies Rombovallen – a place that was an important stop for pilgrims even in medieval times. Here, weary travelers could pause at a “själastuga” a traditional shelter to rest and find peace after the demanding journey across the mountains.
Today, a själastuga has been rebuilt on the same site by the Lofsdalen Cultural Association, and it is open to all who wish to experience a sense of history and enjoy a quiet moment in a beautiful natural setting. It is a place for reflection, just as it was for the pilgrims who once walked these very same trails.

CULTURAL WALK
Take a step back in time as you follow the cultural walk through the village of Lofsdalen, where history comes alive through stories, signs, and scenic surroundings.
Hike Lofsdalens Cultural Trail this summer. Along the way, you’ll find informative signs that tell fascinating stories about the area’s rich history – from the adventurous gold prospectors, to the very first ski tourists who helped shape Lofsdalen into the destination it is today. You’ll also learn about the farms and families whose lives were changed forever when the lake was regulated, and how the landscape and community evolved as a result.
This scenic and educational trail winds through the heart of the village and is designed to be easily accessible, making it perfect for families with strollers or visitors using wheelchairs. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a pleasant and meaningful walk, the cultural trail offers a unique glimpse into Lofsdalen’s past.

THE SÁMI IN HÄRJEDALEN
Reindeer herding and Sámi culture are an important and deeply rooted part of life in Härjedalen. In Lofsdalen, you may often encounter reindeer from Sweden’s second southernmost Sámi communities, Ruvhten Sijte or Mittådalen Sámi village.
A Sámi village (sameby) is an economic and administrative community made up of reindeer-herding Sámi. There are 51 Sámi villages in Sweden, each with its own designated grazing areas for reindeer.
The Sámi culture is a rich heritage of traditions, spirituality, knowledge, and customs – a living culture that continues to shape and enrich this region.
REINDEER HERDING
Working with reindeer herding means living in close harmony with nature. The Sámi culture traditionally recognizes eight seasons, each centered around the life cycle of the reindeer – from winter grazing in the forested lowlands to calving at the foot of the mountains. During the summer, the mountain peaks offer protection from heat and mosquitoes, and as autumn arrives, it becomes time for slaughter. Reindeer herding requires access to vast areas of land, as the animals migrate to different grazing grounds throughout the year.
Each year, the reindeer follow the same ancient migratory routes from winter pastures to summer grazing lands.
Reindeer can often be seen in the village during the summer.
In the past, the Sámi lived as nomads, moving with the herds across the expansive mountain landscape. Today, most Sámi are settled, and reindeer herding is practiced in more modern forms –but nature still dictates the movements of the reindeer, who roam freely across large territories.
Reindeer herding is a demanding way of life. The Sámi balance their work with reindeer while navigating relationships with landowners, tourism, roads, snowmobile trails, and the constant challenge of predators. It is a lifestyle deeply rooted in tradition, shaped by the land, and carried on with resilience and care.

WILDLIFE
Lofsdalen is located in one of Sweden’s most bear-dense areas. At the beginning of the 20th century, only a few bears remained in the country, and one of the places where they survived was here, around the Sonfjället mountain.
Reindeer, moose, and foxes are commonly seen on a daily basis, and from April to September, there’s even a chance to catch a glimpse of the Swedish brown bear, one of Scandinavia’s most iconic and powerful wild animals.
But the wildlife experience doesn’t end there. You might encounter the curious Siberian jay – a surprisingly tame bird that often approaches hikers hoping for a snack. Known as the “campfire companion,” this friendly bird is a favorite among nature lovers.
Birdwatchers will also enjoy the presence of ptarmigan, well-camouflaged among the rocks, and the impressive capercaillie, which can sometimes be seen strutting through the pine forests, especially in early mornings.
Lofsdalen offers a unique chance to experience the Nordic wilderness up close – with silence, space, and unforgettable animal encounters in their natural habitat. Whether you’re hiking through the fells or relaxing in the village.
MYSKOXCENTRUM HÄRJEDALEN
A non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the wild musk ox population in Härjedalen by reducing human disturbance and spreading awareness about this ancient species.
The Musk Ox Centre is located in Tännäs, about 60 km from Lofsdalen. Here, you can book a guided tour with experienced guides who will share their knowledge about this prehistoric animal and give you the chance to encounter it at a safe distance — a truly unique experience found nowhere else in the world.

MOUNTAIN FISHING
Lofsdalen is known for its excellent and diverse fishing opportunities. In the waters in and around the area, you can catch trout, arctic char, grayling, and perch.
The Lofsdalen and Glöte fishing conservation area covers approximately 50,000 hectares and offers fishing in lakes, rivers, and mountain streams — both from shore and by boat.
LOFSSJÖN
The 20-kilometre-long Lofssjön is renowned as one of Härjedalen’s top trout fishing waters. Anglers here have the chance to catch truly impressive specimens — the largest recorded trout weighed a remarkable 9.75 kg and measured 90 cm in length.
Fishing from the shore is possible, and for those wanting to explore more of the lake, boats are available for rent through Destination Lofsdalen or Karin’s Sportbod. Along the shoreline, you’ll find several wind shelters and fire pits, perfect spots to relax, enjoy a meal, and take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain landscape.
In addition to Lofssjön, Lofsdalen offers a wide range of other excellent fishing waters:
Glötessjön and Dyckessjön – These lakes are home to both trout and perch, giving anglers a variety of catch options. Dyckessjön and Stråsjön – Especially popular for Arctic char fishing, attracting those seeking this prized species. Lofsån, Glötesån, Sömlingsån, and Stråån – These flowing waters provide ideal conditions for dry fly fishing, nymphing, or traditional bait fishing with worms.
Whether you prefer lakes or rivers, Lofsdalen has something for every angler.
FISHING PERMITS
To fish in Lofsdalen, a valid fishing permit is required. These can easily be purchased online through the iFiske.se service or at local retailers.
Please note that fishing is prohibited in flowing waters from September 1st to October 31st, which also includes a 200 meter zone around the inlets and outlets of lakes.

ACTIVITIES ON LAKE LOFSSJÖN
Lake Lofssjön offers plenty of water-based adventures. Rent a canoe, kayak, or motorboat and explore the wild and beautiful surroundings of this scenic lake. Along the shoreline, you’ll find several cozy wind shelters where you can stop for a picnic or grill your lunch while enjoying nature at its finest.

SONFJÄLLET NATIONAL PARK
Sonfjället National Park is one of Sweden’s oldest and most iconic protected areas, established in 1909. Located in Härjedalen, about 80 km from Lofsdalen, it’s known for its rugged beauty, rich wildlife, and the striking Sonfjället mountain (1,278 m). The area is one of Scandinavia’s key habitats for brown bears—while sightings are rare, signs like tracks and markings are common.
The park features a range of hiking trails through alpine meadows, dense forests, and glacial terrain. Trails vary in difficulty, from easy walks to challenging climbs, with stunning views from the summit.
FULUFJÄLLET NATIONAL PARK
Fulufjället National Park is one of Sweden’s most striking natural areas, established in 2002 to protect its high plateau and ancient forests. Located in northwestern Dalarna, about 100 km from Lofsdalen, it’s home to Sweden’s highest waterfall,
Njupeskär (93 m), and the world-famous 9,500-year-old spruce “Old Tjikko.”
The park offers well-marked trails for all levels – from short walks to Njupeskär to multi-day hikes across the dramatic, windswept plateau.
HOEDESTUPET
Hoedestupet is a family-friendly excursion spot accessible by car. In the past, the Lofsen river used to rush through here, but today the waterfall is often dry, and the water is instead channeled through a flume dating back to the timber floating era. Bring a snack, enjoy the dramatic river gorge, and let the children play in the forest.
Follow the signs from Glöte and drive about 20 km on a gravel road – the parking area is just 100 meters from Hoedestupet. The trip from Lofsdalen takes a little over 1 hour one way.
FOOD & DRINKS
In Lofsdalen, good food is never far away – whether you’ve spent the day hiking, skiing, or just enjoying the views. The local food scene offers everything from dining in cozy mountain huts to fine dining experiences.
In summer, hike or bike to a classic waffle cabin and enjoy freshly made waffles with jam and cream – in winter, the same hut is reached by snowmobile or snowcat. At the very top of Mount Hovärken, you’ll find a sky bar with panoramic views, refreshing drinks, and light bites. It’s a perfect break after skiing, or a well-earned reward after a summer hike to the summit.
Down in the village, you’ll find everything from gourmet restaurants open during the winter season, to local pizzerias, charming cafés serving light lunches, a bakery with traditional Swedish fika.
Whether you’re in the mood for something refined or something simple, Lofsdalen has a taste for every occasion.
