Our weather is beautiful. Average temperatures in the summer are 85 to 90 degrees, and in the winter, our average temperature is 76 degrees. There are four cool blue pools and water parks in our City, and the icing on the cake–we’re only 8 miles from the beach.

10 Inverrary Waterfall - This designated historic site in Lauderhill is the most photographed attraction in the area and is a favorite for wedding photos. Local lore is that former resident and golfer Jackie Gleason contacted Disney World architects to build the iconic feature. The cascading waters and lush foliage mark the busy Oakland Park Blvd entrance to Inverrary.

Ferrari Museum - Housed in the Swap Shop’s main building, the exotic car collection owned by Preston Henn’s estate includes the Ferrari Enzo, 365 Spider, Maserati MC12, Mercedes McLaren SLR, and Porsche 959. This may be surprising to many in America, but cricket—which has over 2.5 billion fans, is the second most popular sport in the world.

T

o put this into perspective, note that soccer, the most popular worldwide sport, has over 4 billion fans. Third and fourth after cricket are basketball, followed by 825 million, and baseball, which has 500 million enthusiasts.

The baseball bat, for example, is round while a cricket bat has a flat side which is four and a quarter inches wide. The cricket ball is also slightly smaller and slightly harder than a baseball and has a seam that runs the entire circumference of the ball.

“We have baseball, you have cricket, which is like baseball on valium,” remarked late comedian Robin Williams during a performance at the London Palladium in 1987. The line hints at how alike, but still how different the two games are. Both involve bat and ball; both involve scoring by way of runs, and fielding. Yet differences in equipment and method of play give each a singular personality.

The length of a cricket match was often the source of ridicule among Americans accustomed to faster-paced sport played over much shorter time periods. But that issue became irrelevant with the emergence of Twenty20 (T20) cricket which is contested over three hours or so.

International cricket now consists of three formats: 1. T est cricket is normally scheduled for five days, though a game may be completed in far less time.

2. One Day Internationals last a day, with each side playing 50 overs (an over consists of six balls ”bowled”).

3. T20 cricket, as the name suggests, allows each side to bat 20 overs.

Each team is staffed with 11 players. The winning side is the one with more runs (back and forth across the pitch, similar to a run between plates in baseball) at the end of the game. In Test cricket, however, the game is decided after the teams have been “bowled out” twice rather than after a limited number of overs.

Created and disseminated by the English, cricket is like a religion in countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It is also popular in Australia, parts of Africa and the Caribbean. Cricket is now looking longingly at America, a market it is finally hoping to conquer, and Lauderhill—home to the only ICC certified cricket stadium in North America—is the official epicenter of the US cricket revolution.

CRICKET TERMINOLOGY Pitch: The central strip of the cricket field between the wickets where bowling, batting, and runs take place.

Wicket: May refer to the 5 piece wooden structure protected by batsmen at both ends of the cricket pitch, or to the pitch itself.

Sticky Wicket: Difficult circumstances in play caused by a damp and soft pitch. Used colloquially to mean a difficult circumstance.

Bowler: Player who propels the ball towards the batsman, somewhat like the pitcher in baseball. Also like the pitcher in baseball, the bowler’s aim is to prevent the batsman from scoring and to get him out.

Stumps: The three cylindrical pieces of wood that, along with the two bails that sit on top of them, make up the wicket.

For a long time, West Indies cricketing legend Lance Gibbs ruled the spin-bowling roost in West Indies and world cricket.

T

he right-handed off-spinner was the second bowler, after Fred Trueman, to go past 300 Test wickets and held the record for most wickets–309–from February 1976 until it was broken by Dennis Lillee in December 1981.

Gibbs’ last game for the West Indies was in Melbourne, Australia on the ill-fated 1975-76 tour which they lost 1-5. Retiring shortly afterwards, he moved to Florida in 1976 and currently lives in Kendall with his wife Joy.

A member of the West Indies Team for over 18 years, the tall, wiry Guyanese employed long, often bruised fingers to impart vicious spin on the ball. Accuracy was also a main strength, while a high arm generated disconcerting bounce. “I was told when very young,” related Gibbs, “that your arm should brush against your ears while bowling.” It was a lesson he took to heart, and thinks it might have something to do with why no one has followed in his footsteps. “Our fellows’ arms too low,” he offered, “it’s like they’re throwing.”

Leading up to the 2007 World Cup, Gibbs was asked to lead Lauderhill’s bid to host a few games at the Central Broward Park which was developed for the purpose. The bid ultimately did not succeed but Gibbs thinks that Lauderhill and the Stadium have been valuable to the growth of the game in the US. The City has hosted eight international T20 games and a number of Caribbean Premier League matches.

He was recently in England following the West Indies’ World Cup progress. He admits to being disheartened by the performance of his old team and thinks the West Indies authorities should invite more of the former greats to help with the development of the current crop of players.

Now 84 and having retired from Laparkan, the last of three shipping companies he worked with since relocating, the spin-bowling grandmaster still follows the game closely and is not reluctant to vent his opinions on the shortcomings of the modern games and players. Still, he believes there is value in the T20 game and sees it as a way to spread the love of cricket to new audiences.

Wicketkeeper: Fielder stationed behind the stumps, and decked out in pads and gloves. His job is to stop the balls that get past the batsman, and use his position to get batsmen from the opposing team out.

Over: Six balls delivered (bowled) consecutively, normally by the same bowler. If a bowler gets injured before completing the over, another player can bowl the remaining deliveries.

Leg Bye: Run scored when a ball hits a batsman on some part of his body, provided he was making a stroke at the ball with the bat or taking evasive action.

Dot Ball: A ball delivery from which no run is scored.

Leg Before Wicket: When a batsman is hit on the body (usually his leg) after the ball misses the bat or before it hits the bat and the umpire determines that it would have otherwise hit the stumps, he may be deemed out because of “Leg Before Wicket.”

Bouncer: A shortpitched delivery, usually bowled by a fast bowler, that passes the batsman at around chest or head height.

THE STORY OF THE 2016 SERIES O

The Last Time the West Indies Faced India in Lauderhill

n his way to what was then the fourth fastest century in T20Is, made off only 49 deliveries, West Indies opener Evin Lewis struck nine sixes. In one exhilarating over, the 11th of the innings, bowled by pacer Stuart Binny, he bludgeoned five. A few were hit clean out of the ground, never to be seen again, and replacements had to be found.

It was the first game of the India / West Indies T20 series in Lauderhill, Florida and the lefthanded opener’s exciting innings led the West Indies to 245, a total that was unbeatable. Or so we thought.

India’s batsmen had other ideas. Batting at #4 in the order, K.L. Rahul scored even faster than

Lewis, facing 46 balls for his hundred, making it, jointly, the second fastest in T20Is at the time. A cultured stroke-maker, the righthander hit 12 fours and five sixes on his way to an unbeaten 110, carrying India to within a run of the West Indies’ total.

In the end, six was required off the final over, and it was only the experienced bowling arm of Dwayne Bravo that allowed the Caribbean side to come away with such a thrilling win. The second game was ruined by rain. Batting first again, the West Indies brought less fireworks in scoring 143. India had reached 15/0 off two overs when a heavy downpour brought an abrupt end to the proceedings.

2012: West Indies beat T20 World Cup hosts Sri Lanka by 36 to gain the first title. Marlon Samuels, who slammed 78 off 56 balls was named man of the match.

2007: India were inaugural T20 World Cup champions when they beat Pakistan by five runs at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa. Man of the match was Irfan Pathan for his 3/16 off his four allotted overs.

2016: West Indies became the only team to win the T20 World Cup twice when they beat England by four wickets at the T20 World Cup in Kolkata. Marlon Samuels was again named man of the match, this time for his 85 from 56 deliveries. In a thrilling finish, Carlos Brathwaite slammed four consecutive sixes in the final over to bring West Indies to victory.

Most career sixes: West Indies batsman Chris Gayle’s 105 sixes in 54 games is the most in T20Is. Third on the list is India’s Rohit Sharma with 102 sixes in 94 games.

2018: Indian batsman Shikar Dhawan scored the most runs in a calendar year–689 in 17 innings.

Second on the list is his teammate and captain Virat Kohli, who scored 641 runs from 13 innings in 2016, and third is another teammate, Rohit Sharma, who scored 590 runs in 18 innings in 2018.

T20 results: The team from India has 71 wins and 41 losses from the 115 games they have played.

The West Indies have contested 110 games, winning 51 and losing 55. India had three matches that ended in no result, West Indies had four.

THE HISTORY

OF LAUDERHILL Subtropical wetlands, with mangrove and cypress tree marshes, and fields of sawgrass that once covered Lauderhill were home to a thriving Native American culture. The early 1900s ushered new development interests into South Florida.

eveloper Herbert Sadkin envisioned homes and businesses in an area dominated at the time by pastures and swamp lands. In fact, he set his sights on a parcel of land where there were more cows—from the McArthur Dairy Farm—than people. Mr. Sadkin’s plan to develop “Sunnydale” was quickly challenged by his friend, New York Times journalist William Safire, who argued the name “Sunnydale” sounded like a neighborhood in Brooklyn, and preferred a word play between “hill” and “dale”.

Sadkin’s witty comeback pointed out that there are no hills in the area. Mr. Safire replied, “There are probably no dales in [neighboring Fort] Lauderdale, either!” The final decision was to go with the name “Lauderhill”.

The City of Lauderhill was incorporated on June 20, 1959.

Mr. Sadkin not only developed housing in the new City, he also developed the Lauderhill Mall—the first enclosed, air-conditioned mall in the southeastern United States which opened for business in 1966.

Four years later, fewer than 100 homesites had been sold. To generate interest, Broward County developers approached Jackie Gleason—a famous comedian, actor, writer, composer, conductor, and avid golfer—to lend his name to a PGA golf tournament to be held at Lauderhill’s posh Inverrary Country Club. For the nine years the tournament ran, the population in Lauderhill swelled to 30,000 mostly comprising the well-to-do.

New housing demands from the increased population spurred an 85% build out of the City by the early 1990s.

Today, the region of 8.6 square miles with a diverse population of 67,000, includes residents from all over the United States, particularly New York, New Jersey, the northeast and the southern states, as well as the Caribbean, South Asia, and Latin countries. Its evolving demographics have produced a rich variety of cultures, cuisines, architecture, and music, luring visitors to our beloved tropical paradise, the City of Lauderhill.
