LOCAL LEGEND Rumor has it, the first public boat launch ramp constructed in Channel Islands Harbor (opened 1960) was created in the rebellious spirit of its time. “In 1963, a group of locals pooled their resources and built one in the middle of the night at low tide while everyone was sleeping, without approval from any governing bodies,” says Steve Buenger, Visit Oxnard chairman. “My grandmother brought them food to keep ’em going through the night.” Apparently, Ventura County was surprised to find out what had happened, but officials looked the other way until they were able to construct the first officially sanctioned boat launch ramp a few years later. What a rebel move!

At the top level of the parking lot on 3rd and B Street in Downtown Oxnard, you’ll witness a sunset with beautiful towering palm trees in the foreground. Oxnard Beach Park is consistently stunning; once you make your way to the beach, you’ll be presented with dunes, beach grass and ice plants that bloom bright pink flowers with a brilliant background of the Pacific Ocean. Last but not least is the Channel Islands Harbor, where you’ll capture beautiful reflections of the boats and see some sea lions and possibly dolphins. When you’re all done enjoying the views, you can head over to Toppers to enjoy a pizza and beer.

CAR CULTURE LOCAL HOT SPOTS

Cruisin’ Down the Street Classic and custom rides abound at SoCal’s premier destination for car enthusiasts.

PHOTO CREDIT 1, 2: ANGEL SERRANO

by Brittney Hendricks Oxnard is quickly gaining traction as one of California’s top destinations for gearheads of all stripes, and it’s easy to see why. Hosting dozens of car shows, cruise nights and meetups every year, the city regularly treats visitors to the impressive sights and roaring sounds of vintage hot rods, deckedout lowriders, sleek imports and overpowered muscle cars in all their gas-guzzling glory. Oxnard’s car culture stretches back to the 1970s, when locals founded a series of lowrider clubs to talk shop, organize events benefiting the community and show off their custom rides with fellow gearheads. Many of those original clubs are still active today, and their members can be found showcasing their whips at many of the monthly and annual car shows and events. The city is also home to two of Southern California’s premier automotive museums, The Mullin Automotive Museum and The Murphy Auto Museum. A tribute to the masterpieces of French craftmanship from the Art Deco and Machine eras, The Mullin houses one of the finest collections of historic French automobiles in the world, from prestigious Bugattis and Voisins to winning cars from historic races such as Grand Prix de Pau and Le Mans. Just over a mile away, Murphy’s impressive rotating exhibit of more than 50 antique and vintage American cars spans over a century, from beautifully restored Model Ts to old-school Cadillacs to contemporary muscle cars. The museum also features an exhibit dedicated to vintage campers, the Fireball Art Gallery and a gift shop stocked with the “World’s Best Coloring Books” by Fireball Publishing. Enjoy the ride! O

Take a drive to Oxnard, and it’s easy to see why this coastal town is the ideal place for strawberries, lemons and avocados to grow. With perfect year-round weather, Oxnard ships produce worldwide and is California’s largest strawberry producer, with the California Strawberry Festival held at Oxnard’s College Park each spring. How Oxnard Became an Agricultural Powerhouse Oxnard was built on agriculture. In 1897, Albert Maulhardt and Johannes Borchard planted sugar beets in town. Soon after, Henry T. Oxnard built the Sugar Beet Factory and a railroad line to transport the products. Although the Sugar Beet Factory was demolished in 1959, Oxnard is still the place to visit for top fresh produce. Oxnard’s Best Farmers Markets For the best fruit and veggies in town, visit Oxnard’s farmers markets. The Channel Islands Harbor Farmers Market is the place to be for locally grown produce, nuts and honey. The market is open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Grab a cup of coffee or a smoothie and head to the beach for a morning stroll before they open. Busy on the weekends? Bring your reusable shopping bags and introduce yourself to fresh

local produce at the Downtown Oxnard Farmers Market on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Hidden Gems Worth Exploring On our list of the top hidden gems in Oxnard, you’ll find the Oxnard Historic Farm Park. The structures on this one-acre farm date back to 1870. Step back in time and explore the vintage tractors and bean threshers, and check out the barley, corn, sugar beets and lima beans grown on-site. The park is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or by appointment. Whether you’re planning a road trip, family getaway or weekend adventure, Oxnard is a must-visit destination to add to your list. Visit our beaches, kayak in the Channel Islands Harbor, and stock up on your favorite veggies and fresh fruit before you head home. We can’t wait to see you here! O

Rocks’nard Turn up the volume for Oxnard in audio.

by Brittney Hendricks

When it comes to rocking out, no one does it like Oxnard. Thanks to a vibrant music scene that has produced some of the biggest names in rock, hip-hop, metal and more, this beloved beach town has become a musical mecca in its own right. Discover rising stars at one of the city’s popular venues, dance the day (and night) away at a music festival, or check out a piece of music history. Locals in the Limelight Beginning in the first half of the 20th century, Oxnard served as an escape for actors, artists, musicians and producers seeking refuge from the chaotic mix of Angeleno life. After an influx of Hollywood stars — including Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin and John Wayne — famous musicians started to follow, flocking to the city’s coastal neighborhoods. From iconic ’60s duo Sonny and Cher to Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl, Oxnard continues to be a home-base for some of the biggest names in music.

2022-2023 | VISITOXNARD.COM

Oxnard has produced plenty of stars, too. Bigname artists such as Oxnard native and Grammy winner Anderson .Paak got their start right here in the city, and entire genres of music have taken off within city limits. Take “Nardcore,” for instance — a musical style emphasizing raw sounds and turbulent tempo changes. This influential hardcore punk-rock subgenre originated in Oxnard in the 1970s and gave rise to bands like Agression, Dr. Know, Nails and Ill Repute. And Oxnard’s hip-hop scene has produced top-tier talent including Declaime, Lootpack, Madlib and M.E.D. — integral game changers in West Coast hip-hop’s eclectic, neo-soul stylings of the late ’90s. Today, a new generation of local music influencers are taking the stage: Anderson, Paak, Brooke Candy and Cola Boyy are topping charts with their festivalworthy verses, turning ears Oxnard’s way to hear what’s next to come.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Landmark The L.A. Times called it “a place of such hyper-coolness that it operated without any buzz at all.” The newspaper was referring to Oxnard’s Teatro — a rundown cinema turned recording studio where some of rock ‘n’ roll’s biggest artists have imprinted their musical signature, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Iggy Pop and Kenny Rogers, to name just a few. Willie Nelson famously recorded an entire album here in 1998, using the building’s iconic façade for the album’s cover. Closed in 2000, the recording studio remains padlocked behind Teatro’s doors — a slice of music history hidden away on the corner of Oxnard Boulevard and Sixth Street.

Summer Concerts & Music Festivals Music is in the air every summer in Oxnard. Catch timeless classics from rock ‘n’ roll cover bands at Rock the Collection in Collection Park, sail through sound waves at Peninsula Park’s Concerts by the Sea or explore eclectic music genres surrounded by Victorian-era houses at Summer Concerts at Heritage Square. Come to the Oxnard Salsa Festival for all things salsa — the spicy sauce and the music — and stay for the festivities, including a battle of the bands, dancing with the community stars and a kid’s zone. The expansive lawns of Oxnard Beach Park set the stage for the Oxnard Jazz Festival, a day-long celebration of jazz in all its forms.

Drum Roll Please… By private appointment only, visitors can book a weekday tour of the world headquarters for Drum Workshop, an internationally acclaimed drum kit and hardware manufacturer founded in 1972. Drum Workshop boasts an impressive artist roster, including Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Neil Peart (Rush) and Josh Freese (The Vandals, Guns N’ Roses and Devo). Also locally grown, Era Drum Company is an Oxnard-based kit builder dressing shells in glitter, pearlescent and wood finishes worthy of thunderous applause. Guitar-maker Larrivée also calls Oxnard home. A Toronto transplant, the company prides itself on its craftsmanship by hand-picking tone woods from forests in India, Spain and other countries.

Live Music Venues Revel in live music at Copper Blues Rock Pub & Kitchen, which features a rotation of resident bands, or slow down to marina melodies at The Waterside Restaurant. Catch a three-day weekend’s worth of live entertainment at The Shores Oxnard, or descend a staircase into a prohibition-style cellar for a unique auditory experience at 1901 Speakeasy. O

MUSIC

Drum Workshop’s Headquarters and Custom Shop From the forest to the stage, DRUM WORKSHOP mixes innovative science with an eye for artistry and an obsession with sound. And that’s just one part of this percussion powerhouse. The DW showroom is a drummer’s paradise — and also one of Southern California’s most unique stops. Some of the world’s top players’ drum sets were made right here in the Oxnard custom shop: Mick Fleetwood, Don Henley, Sheila. E., Dave Grohl, Bruno Mars and many others. Want to play where the pros do? Oxnard Factory Tours include the whole drum-making process — from raw wood veneer to finished instrument — plus a tuning lesson, history of the company, a chance to see where the hardware is made and a “hands on” showroom experience. Anthony Bourdain once said that Mexican cuisine is “older even than the great cuisines of Europe, and often deeply complex, refined, subtle and sophisticated. … It could be, should be, one of the most exciting cuisines on the planet, if we paid attention.” And if you pay attention around our wonderful City of Oxnard, you will experience the joy of tasting a tremendous variety of Mexican cuisine — amazing dishes from different regions of Mexico, many made from old family recipes. It’s not just Taco Tuesday and breakfast burritos — the vast universe of Mexican cuisine that is “deeply complex, refined, subtle and sophisticated” can be discovered in Oxnard. It’s certainly my favorite cuisine in Oxnard, and I enjoy finding new dishes all the time!

ust off the mainland, discover a world untouched at the Channel Islands National Park. This archipelago rises dramatically from the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean across the Santa Barbara Channel from Oxnard and is home to an incredible array of flora and fauna found nowhere else on earth. Only accessible by boat or plane, few visitors make the trip to these stunning, one-of-a-kind isles, resulting in a paradise rich in natural and cultural history. The five islands that comprise the national park are filled with diverse ecosystems that can be enjoyed in rugged solitude. Catch a ferry to any of these beautiful islands for a single day of exploration or an entire week of discovery.

ANACAPA ISLAND Open year-round, 1⁄-hour channel crossing Guests to Anacapa Island will be greeted by towering sea cliffs, formed by years of gentle erosion. Explore the windswept landscape with roughly two miles of trails to roam. • Much of the island’s flora lies dormant for most of the year until exploding into a world of colors in the early spring. • Anacapa boasts thousands of seafaring birds, including the largest population of California brown pelicans and western gulls. We recommend avid birders plan a visit from May through June to see fluffy western gull chicks huddled in their nests right off the main trails. • The island is home to the 1932 Anacapa Island Lighthouse; wander to the highest point to see the station and for a glimpse of the famous Arch Rock in the ocean below.

Rising dramatically from deep, blue waters and only accessible by boat or plane, few visitors make the trip to these stunning isles, resulting in a paradise rich in natural and cultural history. Spend a day (or more!) discovering the islands for yourselves.

SANTA CRUZ ISLAND Open year-round 1⁄-hour channel crossing The largest island in California, Santa Cruz Island is comprised of more than 96 square miles of pristine land including two mountain ranges; a central valley and fault line; deep watery canyons; and 77 miles of rocky cliffs, sandy beaches and so much more. • On the northwest side of the island resides one of the largest sea caves in the world: Painted Cave is a quarter-mile long and 100-feet wide. Kayakers can explore the deep recesses of the colorful cavern named for the various lichen and algae decorating its interior. • With few predators native to the island, a huge bounty of plant species, land animals, seabirds and ocean-dwelling creatures have thrived here. Visitors are encouraged to discover this wild beauty, just as the Native Americans did 10,000 years ago. • Snorkel right off Scorpion Anchorage, or picnic along the shore at Prisoners Harbor. Those looking to stay on terra firma can take a leisurely stroll along the well-marked trails in Scorpion Valley or go for a heart-pumping hike in the Montañon region. • If you need more time to discover all that Santa Cruz offers, pitch a tent at one of the island’s campgrounds, including those at family-friendly Scorpion Ranch or within the Del Norte Backcountry.

SANTA ROSA ISLAND: FOX’NARD Open March through November 2-hour channel crossing Just west of Santa Cruz Island, Santa Rosa Island takes on a different ecological form than its larger sibling. • The island is famous for a rare subspecies of Torrey pine, as well as some of the Channel Islands’ native plants and ani6 mals, including the island fox — the national park’s largest native land-based mammal. • Additionally, the current ecosystem is rich with canyon grasses, nesting bald eagles and lagoons. • Santa Rosa was once a reflection of a prehistoric world. In 1994, paleontologists unearthed the remains of a pygmy mammoth, a Pleistocene-era endemic species that roamed the island and grew to a height of about six feet. The preserved skeleton of the miniature

7

mammoth is the most complete species’ fossil ever found. Learn about the history of the island during ranger-led hikes or on a self-guided interpretive walk.

SANTA BARBARA ISLAND Open April through October 2-hour channel crossing At just one-square mile, Santa Barbara is the smallest of the five Channel Islands in the park. Nevertheless, the little isle teems with life. • An underwater volcanic eruption helped form the island’s twin-peaked mesa that juts upward from the triangular-shaped landmass. • A surprising variety of native songbirds, such as the horned lark, orange-crowned warbler and house finch, live in the brush and grasses peppering the landscape. The melodies of songbirds mingle with the bellows and barks of northern elephant seals and sea lions on the shore, creating a unique symphony. • Due to its isolation, Santa Barbara is a fantastic place to go swimming, snorkeling and kayaking, with water access only available at Landing Cove.

SAN MIGUEL ISLAND Open July through October 3⁄-hour channel crossing The westernmost and most isolated island, San Miguel is a staging area for an almost daily battle of the elements. High winds and dense fog hit the shores of the island, resulting in a harsh but beautiful landscape. • Hikers who make the all-day guided trek across the island will find gorgeous vistas and sights of wildlife. • Thousands of pinnipeds reside at Point Bennett, using the secluded beach as a breeding ground. Offshore, marine mammals such as dolphins, gray whales, orcas and even blue whales frequent the waters. • Access to San Miguel is by permit only, but it’s worth it — the island is spectacular. O

Ask the Experts PARK RANGERS GIVE THE INSIDE SCOOP.

“One thing I do at the end of a hike is invite visitors to find a quiet spot and listen to the island. If people care about the islands, they’ll continue to be protected.” – BETHANY SZCZEPANSKI, PARK GUIDE

“Keep wildlife wild. The island foxes won’t run away so quickly. We encourage visitors not to approach or feed the foxes, though you can take pictures and observe them.” – LAURA SHASKEY, WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST

“The waters are a boater’s paradise, but we recommend using chart plotters or the Whale Alert app. Unless you have a GPS, there’s nobody out there, and there are no landmarks to guide you." – MERRILL MCCAULEY, PROTECTION RANGER

SILVER STRAND BEACH

Named after the silver screen, Silver Strand Beach is the southernmost beach in Oxnard, hugged by a colorful neighborhood of stunning homes, stores and The Yoga Channel, a boutique yoga studio. Head toward the beach’s southern point to check out the historic La Jennelle shipwreck that forms Silver Strand’s jetty. Along the way, you’ll catch sight of striking murals adorning the walls of Port Hueneme Naval Base. Located along the harbor inlet, the fun environs of Kiddy Beach Park make the perfect spot for a family-friendly excursion.

After your beach-time fun, fill up at Jetty Surf Café, which offers a delicious menu of chicken shawarma, lamb gyros and kabob plates to match Oxnard’s Mediterranean climate. Hungry for BBQ? Quincy Street can fix you right up with a rack of ribs that are finger-lickin’ good. Finish the day with a pint at Beachcomber Tavern — but not before paying a visit to Miscellaneous Treasures, a veritable treasure trove of antique finds and thrifty goods.

Your dog deserves a vacation, too! Whether it’s ambling along the sandy shores of Silver Strand Beach or strolling along the promenade at the Channel Islands Harbor, you and your pooch will be treated to a canine paradise of uncrowded coastline, paw-some weather, and plenty of space to sniff and explore. Most Oxnard restaurants are pet friendly and offer outdoor seating, and some spots even offer doggy treats! Many hotels are also happy to accommodate pets. Just remember that a leash is required at all times while you’re at the beach, harbor or park and to pick up after your pet to help us keep our beach town pristine! Want to let your puppy loose for a little while? Oxnard has three offleash dog parks for your pooch to run free and wild: Campus Park; Jax’s Windrow Dog Park, just down the street from The Collection at RiverPark; and Rudy’s Dog Park at College Park. All three spots offer plenty of space for your fourlegged pal to roam, sniff and make some new friends along the way.

Hollywood By the Sea

3

Once dubbed “Hollywood by the Sea,” the stretch of coastline that would make up Hollywood Beach and Silver Strand Beach first came into the spotlight in the 1920s as a faux Arabian desert in the 1921 blockbuster, The Sheik. A few

years later, the land was developed into beachfront property, with streets named after famous Hollywood thoroughfares: Sunset Drive, La Brea Street, Laurel Court and more. The community also catered to goldenera entertainers, with several A-list

stars such as Greta Garbo, Clark Gable and Rudolph Valentino owning vacation homes here. In the 1960s, the Channel Islands Harbor was constructed, splitting Hollywood by the Sea into two separate beachfront communities.

CHANNEL ISLANDS HARBOR Opposite Hollywood Beach, Channel Islands Harbor’s Marine Emporium Landing is home to several of the best restaurants in town: Moqueca Brazilian Cuisine, Waterside Restaurant, Honey Cup Coffeehouse & Creamery and Sea Fresh. But fine dining is only half the fun at the harbor. The horseshoe-shaped waterway is the fifth largest in California for small-craft recreation, making it a bona fide boater’s utopia.

Nine-time national surf champ and owner of Channel Islands Kayak Center Mike Lamm leads family-friendly kayaking tours from the docks below. More aquatic entertainment can be found at SoCal Jet Ski, Channel Islands Parasail, Channel Island Expeditions, A&M Yacht Charters and Cruises, Doug’s Channel Islands Tours, and Island Packers, the exclusive concessionaire to Channel Islands National Park.

Discover historical paintings, model ships and naval nonpareils at Channel Islands Maritime Museum. On the harbor, locals bike, skate and stroll the boardwalk of the harbor’s nine full-service marinas, where water taxis drop diners and shoppers off at various docks. 1. Get away from it all in the tranquil waters of the Channel Islands Harbor; 2. Discover the surfing world’s best-kept secret.

Surf Breaks

OXNARD SHORES

Although it’s the most popular beach in Oxnard, there’s still plenty of room to stretch out and relax. At Oxnard Beach Park, 62 acres of recreation space serve as a host for local events, including the Oxnard Jazz Festival and the Native American Peoples Intertribal Powwow. A paved boardwalk lined with towering palms and rolling lawns leads the way to Oxnard State Beach, which is overlooked by the luxurious Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach, a popular venue for weddings.

Weekly yoga sessions are held on the grass and the sand by Yoga by the Sea. Walk a block inland to The Shores Bar & Restaurant, where you can play shuffleboard with friends while sipping on a selection of signature cocktails and beers on tap, plus delectable bar-style appetizers and main courses as well as fine dining options such as scallops and pappardelle sugo. A few doors down, enjoy local craft beer from Red Tandem Brewery, a micro-brewery that’s big on flavor and style. O

Surf breaks are seasonal in Oxnard. Beginner-level waves (soft-breaking) are found to the north of Oxnard; two beaches ideal for newbies are Ventura’s Mondos along Pacific Coast Highway or the beach at Ventura Harbor. For intermediatelevel waves throughout the year, head to Mandalay State Beach/Oxnard Shores, where the waves are easiest to tame in the summertime as swells bypass Oxnard’s beaches through the Santa Barbara Channel. If you’re ready for the big surf, chase powerful, expertlevel waves at Silver Strand Beach, a world-class surfer’s paradise. In the winter, intense swells produce breaks like the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii that are perfect for tube riding. Catch a barrel at one of the surfing world’s best-kept secrets.
