Head inland to the Conwy Valley. Snowdonia’s peaks might well be snow-capped – as you’ll see from the terraces of beautiful Bodnant Garden and Bodnant Welsh Food Centre. Betws-y-Coed, packed with characterful independent shops, makes Christmas shopping for that special present easy. Finish the day with a riverside walk from the bridge – the rushing River Llugwy is sure to be in fine form.

The cliff-hugging Great Orme Scenic Drive takes you to Conwy. The views from the Orme and Conwy’s mighty medieval castle are sensational, especially in crisp, clear winter air. Bring binoculars – they’ll also come in handy at Conwy’s RSPB Reserve, where large flocks gather to feed. In the afternoon, trace Llandudno’s fascinating story at the town’s museum before enjoying show-stopping evening entertainment at Venue Cymru.

Wave goodbye to winter with lungfuls of fresh sea air along Llandudno’s peerless pier. There’s more of the same at charming, quirky, laid-back Rhos-on-Sea and Colwyn Bay. Take in its remodelled promenade, then get in amongst the greenery at Eirias Park, the lovely 50-acre ‘park by the sea’.

First port of call has to be Bodnant Garden (see the main photograph). For a shot of adrenaline head down the Conwy Valley to Zip World Fforest, where you can dangle, climb, ride and fly between the trees on aerial, arboreal obstacle courses. Those without a head for heights might prefer a woody walk from Llanrwst’s elegant 17th-century bridge to Gwydir Uchaf Chapel in the Gwydyr Forest Park.

It’s summer, so that means one thing. The beach calls, and there’s plenty of choice: Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr in the west, Llandudno (two beaches here), Rhos-on-Sea and Colwyn Bay, with Pensarn, Towyn and Kinmel Bay in the east. Then catch the summer breeze from the summit of Llandudno’s Great Orme headland, accessible by San Franciscan-style tramway or Alpine-inspired cable car.

Visit the quayside at Conwy – it’s buzzing with life at this time of the year – and see if you can squeeze into its famous ‘smallest house’. At nearby Surf Snowdonia, the world’s first inland surfing lagoon, great breaks are guaranteed. If you prefer not to get your feet wet head to the picturesque village of Rowen, starting point of enticing moorland and mountain walks.

The Conwy Valley will be ablaze with autumn colour. Betws-y-Coed shelters in a bowl surrounded by woodland, so take your pick from leafy walks through golden glades. You’ll build up an appetite, mind. We’ll take care of that, at places like Capel Curig’s award-winning Bryn Tyrch Inn (AA Welsh ‘Pub of the Year’), and Bodnant Welsh Food Centre. You’ll need those calories if you Go Below, an exciting – and quite physical – underground tour of an abandoned mine from Conwy Falls.

NO Life There’s lots of it. Pull up a deckchair and watch the world go by on our beautiful beaches – there are two to choose from. Dip your feet in the surf or head out to sea on a boat trip around the bay. Or explore a very different side of Llandudno on Great Orme, the resort’s own rugged mini-mountain. Get to the top by antique tram or high-wire cable car (or on foot if you’re feeling energetic). That’s Wales’s theme for 2018. What better time to get to know our seaside? We’ve already covered Llandudno so take a look at Colwyn Bay, where the spacious sandy beach has been bolstered by a regenerated seafront and the dining hotspot of Porth Eirias. Big, blustery Kinmel Bay is a favourite with kitesurfers and sailors, while Towyn’s old-school collection of beachfront amusements never goes out of style.

Go sea fishing at Rhos-on-Sea or stroll through coastal history on its heritage trail, taking in the tiny waterfront chapel of 6th-century Saint Trillo. Pensarn’s shinglefronted panoramic promenade is popular with visitors in search of the classic British beach holiday experience, while Traeth Lafan Nature Reserve near Llanfairfechan is a paradise for bird spotters. It’s definitely worth a look. This bustling mountain village is the ideal countryside companion to Llandudno – a 40-minute train or car ride through some of North Wales’s loveliest scenery is all it takes to get here. The gateway to the Snowdonia National Park, it’s the perfect base for climbers, cyclists, walkers and kayakers seeking to test themselves against Snowdonia’s rugged landscapes. For the more casual explorer, there are gentle waymarked walking trails along riverbanks and through woodland (plus a wealth of places to stop for a refreshing beverage). But there’s more to Betws than outdoor pursuits. The village was an artists’ colony in the 19th century and a sense of style persists to this day, notably in its infinitely browsable shops stocked with an impressive range of arty, crafty items. You might want to bring an extra bag.

The beach goes on … and on. Our 35-mile coastline could almost be called one big beach, apart from interruptions – very welcome ones, we have to say – at the Conwy Estuary and Great and Little Orme headlands. It’s a case of quantity and quality, for most beaches are award-winners (Blue Flag or Seaside Award). There’s variety too – from the sand and pebble beaches at the Victorian seaside towns of Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr to panoramic seascapes and dunes at Pensarn and Kinmel Bay.

they’ll come in very handy. Seaside walks are taken care of by our section of the Wales Coast Path (see main picture). For countrylovers there are moody moors, forests, gentle green vales and high-flying Snowdonia. Mountain men (and women) head to Capel Curig, the craggy village linked with legendary climbers. Woodland walks don’t come any better than those in the lovely Gwydyr Forest Park. There are town walks too, showcasing Alice in Wonderland (at Llandudno), architecture (Colwyn Bay) and local gems like Britain’s smallest church (Rhos-on-Sea).

Dilynwch y llwybrau drwy wlyptiroedd y foryd yng Ngwarchodfa Natur RSPB Conwy. Those binoculars? They’ll be put to good use in places like Llyn Brenig, where you may spot deer, otters, red squirrels, badgers, grouse, buzzards … and even rare ospreys. Another prolific spot is the RSPB’s Conwy Reserve, one of the UK’s best places for wildlife.

ADVENTUReSTORIES With the backdrop of a sweeping coastline, hills, forests and mountains it’s not surprising that North Wales is the UK’s coolest hot spot for activities. Take a look at what you can get up to here – everything from abseiling near Betws-y-Coed to zorbing at Llyn Brenig. There’s more aquatic action at breezy Kinmel Bay (a natural arena for kitesurfing that’s popular with canoeists and sailors too), while on dry land you can go skiing without the white stuff on Llandudno’s Great Orme.

Making the Grade - A Guide to Quality Assurance All the accommodation featured in this publication has been independently assessed so you can make your choice in confidence, knowing that each place to stay has been given a rating according to the quality and facilities on offer. These ratings mean that you can be sure of standards and choose the accommodation that’s just right for you. Visit Wales/AA are the only checking agents in Wales, checking out over 5,000 places.

What do our star ratings mean? Visit Wales STARS are evidence of quality. They range from one to five stars and are a reliable indication of the services and facilities you can expect in accommodation which includes hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfast, farm accommodation, hostel/hostel type accommodation, self-catering cottages and apartments and caravan holiday home and touring/ camping parks. Cleanliness is the most crucial element of any assessment and minimum standards, particularly at the higher star ratings reflect consumer expectations. All accommodation grades are based on a set of common quality standards agreed by Visit Wales, Visit England, Visit Scotland, Tourism Northern Ireland and the AA.

Does a lower star rating equal less quality? Many lower star rated accommodations may still offer high quality but do not meet all of the facility and service expectations for the higher star ratings. It is particularly important not to compare Guest Accommodation ratings against Hotel ratings as different criteria are used when assessing. The advice is to always check with an establishment before booking to check that the accommodation offers the services and facilities that meet your needs – they will only be too pleased to help. Also look out for that extra-special property that has been awarded Visit Wales’ Gold Award, given for exceptional standards of hospitality, comfort and food in serviced accommodation. Occasionally, it has not been possible to visit the accommodation prior to publication. In these instances, the property is marked as ‘Awaiting Grading’. Some accommodation operators have chosen not to be star rated, but they have been checked out to ensure that they provide an acceptable level of services and facilities appropriate to their type of business. They are identified as either ‘Verified’ or ‘Listed’

Visitor Attractions Look out for the Visit Wales Quality marque. This only gets awarded to attractions that have been independently assessed against the national standards of the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme to ensure that all areas important to your visit are of the best standard.
