between
In Between; an attempt to blur two extremes together, to find a position and role within them, to create an intermediate space for dialogue, to meet half-way. As artists learn to exist and create in between life and art, they invite the viewer to step into this transitional space with them and join the conversation. The exhibition ‘In Between’ presents the results of the exploration of this space by three established Cypriot visual artists: Ioanna Kythreotou, Thekla Papadopoulou and Elena Tsigaridou. Through an interplay of their artistic practices, these artists unfold their personal thoughts and experiences in relation to the female identity, and its multilayered existence within the ‘in-between.’
Foreward
Each artist explores the ‘woman’ as the subject of their work, bringing to the exhibition space different interpretations of the female existence today, both in society and consequently in contemporary art. The association of the female identity with culture, its position within the public space and its relationship with nature, are the different questions concerning the body of work presented. Aspects of these existence are then challenged against the (es)sence of place and experience, and the memories associated with it. By presenting abstracted landscapes, often disrupted by realistic and figurative elements, the artists let the viewer hover between the real and the subconscious space. This duality present in their work, places the audience in a position to find the ‘in between,’ through a personalised response to the extremes that need to me bridged.
The work in this exhibition is characterised by a strong sense of feminine sensitivity and delicacy that is rooted in the art of these three artists, which have been developing their practices collaterally for the past years. This has resulted in an organic interchange of elements in the work presented, creating a cohesive narrative of visual mindscapes, where each one informs and challenges the rest. As these artists unravel the thread of their artistic practices and processes, they manage to take their paintings out of their ‘frames,’ creating a new context for the interpretation of their work. Hovering between painting, drawing and sculptural practices, the artists combine visual elements that address the conflicts surrounding female identity, which seems to be always situated somewhere in between; somewhere within the physical and the subconscious space, within memory and essence of an experience, within reality and abstraction.

Ανάμεσα μια προσπάθεια να ενώσουμε δύο άκρα μαζί, να βρούμε θέση και ρόλο ενδιάμεσά τους, να δημιουργήσουμε έναν μέσο χώρο για διάλογο, να συναντηθούμε στα μισά του δρόμου. Πρόλογος
στον εκθεσιακό χώρο διαφορετικές ερμηνείες της γυναικείας ύπαρξης σήμερα, τόσο στην κοινωνία όσο και κατ’ επέκταση στη σύγχρονη τέχνη. Η συσχέτιση της γυναικείας ταυτότητας με τον πολιτισμό, η θέση της στο δημόσιο χώρο και η σχέση της με τη φύση, είναι τα διαφορετικά ερωτήματα που αφορούν το σύνολο της δουλειάς που παρουσιάζεται. Στη συνέχεια, πλευρές αυτής της ύπαρξης αναλύονται, με βάση την αίσθηση του τόπου και της εμπειρίας, και των αναμνήσεων που συνδέονται με αυτή. Παρουσιάζοντας αφηρημένα τοπία, που συχνά διακόπτονται από ρεαλιστικά και παραστατικά στοιχεία, οι καλλιτέχνες αφήνουν τον θεατή να αιωρείται ανάμεσα στον πραγματικό και τον υποσυνείδητο χώρο. Καθώς αυτές οι τρεις εικαστικοί ξετυλίγουν το νήμα των καλλιτεχνικών τους πρακτικών και διαδικασιών, καταφέρνουν να βγάλουν τους πίνακές τους από τα «πλαίσιά» τους, δημιουργώντας ένα νέο περιβάλλον για την ερμηνεία των έργων τους. By combining natural and architectural elements through painterly practices, Ioanna Kythreotou creates distant locations, that appear as serene scenes of escape. As geometry and uniformity intertwine with abstraction, through the intricate layers of the painting, one starts to interrogate the subsistence of these sceneries. Kythreotou’s paintings tempt the viewer towards a visual narrative which promises an alternative reality, away from the chaotic scenery of the everyday, through a carefully constructed aesthetic quality that appears to be consuming the viewer’s attention. As the audience begins to get carried away within this indulgence, the presence of female figures and portraits intertwined
with these mystical places, appears to be disrupting the idealised fantasy relating to these spaces. Kythreotou is using this juxtaposition to pose questions in relation to the presence of women in the public space, focusing on the increasing numbers of disappearing women cases in Cyprus and worldwide. These idealised spaces are abruptly translated into hostile environments, commenting on the power dynamics between ‘place’ and ‘woman.’ As these spaces hover between reality and the construction of imagination, they leave the audience re-thinking the stories associated with these cases, as they are often mistakenly conceived as mere tales of fantasy, isolated from the everyday.

Συνδυάζοντας φυσικά και αρχιτεκτονικά
στοιχεία μέσα από ζωγραφικές πρακτικές, η Ιωάννα Κυθραιώτου δημιουργεί
μακρινές τοποθεσίες, που εμφανίζονται
ως γαλήνιες σκηνές απόδρασης. Καθώς η
γεωμετρία και η ομοιομορφία μπλέκονται

ως σύγχρονης ζωγράφου επικεντρώνεται
γύρω από την ουσία των φυσικών τοπίων
και φαινομένων, μέσα από μια βιωματική
και διαισθητική προσέγγιση προς τα υλικά,
τις επιφάνειες και την αισθητική. Σε μια
προσπάθεια να προσελκύσει τους θεατές σε
οπτικές αφηγήσεις που αντικατοπτρίζουν
αυτά τα φαινόμενα, η καλλιτέχνης
χρησιμοποιεί αφηρημένη ζωγραφική για
να απεικονίσει θραύσματα μιας οικείας
και μάλλον ενδιαφέρουσας σχέσης με τη

Thekla Georgiou Papadopoulou’s practice as a contemporary painter is centred around the essence of natural landscapes and phenomena, through an experiential and intuitive approach towards materials, surfaces and aesthetics. In an attempt to draw viewers within visual narratives that reflect these phenomena, the artist is using abstract painting to depict fragments of an intimate and rather intriguing relationship with surrounding nature. The work presented manifests luscious surfaces, deriving from complex layers of contradicting and unifying materials, such as acrylic paint, varnish and glass paint. The absorbent surfaces of the fabrics used react with the materials used, creating elaborate stain-like marks that appear almost accidental, since the
material takes over control in the artist’s processes. Papadopoulou presents these patterns through various mediums, combining in a collage-like manner paintings with digital reproductions, stretching and challenging the boundaries of traditional painting practices. Using self-figuration within almost transparent photographic layers on clear plastic, overlaid on a painterly composition, the artist poses question on the relationship between the ‘self’ and the essence of nature. The association between the female body with nature, established by patriarchal notions on femininity, is being re-invented through this installation, by exploring this longstanding relationship, within a more personal and emotional approach.

Wandering between childhood memories, nostalgic images from the past or a desired future, Elena Tsigaridou portrays through her mainly figurative artworks serene images of inner piece, innocence, and personal memory. In the installation presented in this exhibition, the artist adopts a more three-dimensional approach, creating a composition made of lifesize female figures, carefully positioned to follow a specific order. Drawn from the figurative elements of the Caryatids and their placement at the porch of the Erechtheion, this installation creates an almost immersive space where the audience is invited to walk through to observe the details from up-close. Through this installation and the digital drawings that accompany it, Tsigaridou
comments on the relationship between the female identity and cultural history, creating a symbolic representation of the role of women in contemporary society. The Caryatids, as symbols of endurance, support and timelessness, as they are taking the place of a column or a pillar, are used visually and metaphorically by the artist, to draw connections with the multi-faceted and challenging roles women as consistently asked to undertake in all aspects of everyday life. As the figures appear to participate in a procession, given away by their gestures, the static structure of the installation appears to regain its life through as silent ‘dance’, trying to lure in the audience, and to rediscover female existence through the spectrum of culture and heritage.

Ioanna Kythreotou
Ioanna Kythreotou was born in Larnaca in 1984. She studied in the UK and returned to Cyprus with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from the University of Sunderland and a Masters degree in Painting from the University of Wolverhampton. She lives in Larnaca where she works as an art teacher at the American Academy Larnaca. She has presented her work in various exhibitions in Cyprus, New York and Dubai.

Thekla Papadopoulou (b. 1978) is an established Cypriot contemporary artist based in Larnaca, Cyprus. Papadopoulou has presented five solo exhibitions in Cyprus and Greece, and has also participated in numerous group exhibitions internationally, including Paris, New York, London and others. In 1997 she graduated from the American Academy Larnaca and was admitted in the Academy of Fine Arts “Raffaello” of Urbino, Italy, where she followed a fouryear program of study in Contemporary Art and Painting. She graduated in 2002 with distinction. She is also involved in art education as an art teacher at the American Academy Larnaca.

Elena Tsigaridou (b.1980) is an established Cypriot contemporary artist based in Athienou, Cyprus. She earned her B.A. with Distinction (in Fine Art, Painting), from the Academia di Belle Arti, in Rome Italy in 2003.
Tsigaridou has presented four solo exhibitions and has also participated in numerous group exhibitions internationally, including New York, Italy, Brussels, Greece, Dubai and others.
Her work is found in numerous private and corporate collections throughout Cyprus, Brussels, USA and Italy, including the Frissiras Museum in Athens, the Cypriot State Gallery and the Kallinikeio Municipal Museum of Athienou.
She is also involved in art education as an art teacher at the American Academy Larnaca.
